Pearl Diner is one of those classic NYC spots that just feels easy. It was right across from my hotel in the Financial District, so I went for breakfast and it honestly hit the spot. Eggs were cooked right, bacon was crispy, home fries were solid, and the portions were generous. Nothing trendy or over the top, just good dependable diner food. It's a pretty typical diner; a little dingy but nostalgic, booths are small and pretty busy. Wait staff are super friendly and accommodating. The whole experience isn't anything outstanding, but then again it's a diner - you need to manage your expectations with these. My food was good; I got the corned beef hash. Conveniently located across the street from my hotel it seemed like a logical place for lunch. The reviews are favorable so I decided to give it a shot. It is definitely a diner atmosphere, but definitely aging. It is a cold day and apparently the heating isn't working well so I am keeping my coat on. I beat the lunch rush and was pretty much the only customer at 11:30 AM. I ordered a Coke Zero which was served quickly. I've also ordered the supreme burger (added bacon and cheese) with fries. The service was functional, quick and efficient with no frills. The menu featured breakfast items like omelettes, pancakes and waffles for breakfast, sandwiches and burgers for lunch. Ordered a feta cheese, spinach and onion omelette with avocado on top. It came with home fries and toast but did not get the toast. Ate here our last day. We should have visited sooner. If you're at the Residence Inn, skip the free breakfast and come inside. Yes, it looks like a dump on the outside, but inside is an authentic diner, a little rough on the edges but the real deal. They have filmed a few movies here. I made my own omelette, you can't miss. Ordered House breakfast potatoes extra crispy, rye bread toast. So good. Bagel and cream cheese was an authentic bagel, not a Residence Inn Costco bagel. Service was great. I now try to get my wife to book us at the Marriott on Pear St. because it is literally across the street from the Pearl Diner; she knows we'll make at least one trip there when we visit NY. This place is truly "old school" in menu and ambiance. It is a little worn but, hey, what good diner isn't? The menu has all the classics and they are served promptly and served well. I always get the Corned Beef Hash w/ 2 eggs over easy and rye toast. My wife had an veggie cheese omelet that turned into a breakfast for 2 days the portion was so good. The potatoes were very good, and not at all greasy. AND, the bill for two with coffee was less than $50! Where can you get a good breakfast in Manhattan for that price?! read more

I ordered a simple breakfast - lumberjack pancakes with over-easy eggs, grilled cheese w/ avocado, and a danish. The only thing right were the pancakes and eggs; grilled cheese was plain, cold w/ NO avocado (it's 2 separate menu items, how can you misread that?) and no danish - basically received half my breakfast. Friends never visit me while I'm at work so I was like YEE HAW! Where do we go?! I've always walked past this spot and have been curious. It's the cutest diner ever. Very small with bar stools and little booths. They have space heaters inside as well to make sure it remains cozy. The CUTEST. The area where they get stars knocked down is honestly just the food could be less bland. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? I feel like they probably do eggs exceptionally decent. But I got the chicken caesar salad wrap with a side of fries. My friend got the gryo platter that comes with fries and a salad as well. The wrap was so bland and a little dry. It needed like another cup of dressing and maybe some more parm or maybe I should have asked for an additional side of dressing. But yeah. And the crinkle cut fries tasted frozen. Which I'm not even hating on. I just needed more pizzaz. My friend did not eat their side salad so I took that and half my wrap to go for lunch the next day. There was zero dressing on the salad. The only thing that redeemed it was that there were some dry chunks of feta on it. Which I loaded some of it onto my sad chicken wrap. Would I come back? Absolutely. I'd try something else for sure and pray. But also I feel like diners are a dime a dozen these days and I hope they stay forever and ever and just juice things up on the menu. First time in Manhattan; the hotel I slumbered had this blast from the past diner smushed in between tall buildings and business. Don't let this location fool you, it may be towered by skyscrapers but the deliciousness of this diner and the menu options carried its weight. Opens breakfast time and closes around 3/4pm. My first "NY" Bagel came from this place, it looked and tasted a lot better than the GA bagels I get and the smear was a great compliment. My party ate simple and enjoyed each bite and the service was on point...place ain't big inside though. So I've been dying to go to this classic diner, and my wife and I finally had the chance to experience this great place! And they didn't let us down! Firstly, let me just say that Julie (our server) was the star of the show! She's been there for 22 years, though with her wonderful personality, you'd think she just started working there! The food was amazingly delicious! My over-easy eggs were cooked perfectly, and the corned beef hash was delectable! Home fries were on point, and make sure to order their soft, melt-in-your-mouth pancakes too! Last but not least, what drew me to this diner in the first place was the quaint, unique atmosphere! Sorry, but 18.99 for the "Buffalo Burger Supreme" which is just an ordinary burger with lettuce, tomatoes, and some fries is not worth it. There's nothing "Buffalo" about this burger--no buffalo sauce or anything like that. It's nice that it was offered to-go, but I would rather go to one of the several other spots in the area serving something more substantial at a lower price. I feel I got scammed here. Not much to say about the service and ambiance this time. I don't recommend this place if you're looking for burgers. Not at all. Check out 7th Street Burger or any other place, really. We came fairly early for Saturday brunch as part of a group of 5, and had a ~15 minute wait for a booth meant for four (they don't take reservations). We were excited to try this diner, so squeezing in wasn't a big deal, but if you're a larger group you may need to split up to be seated comfortably. Otherwise, the ambience was nice and had some old school diner vibes. Service was good, but we asked for water for the table a couple of times and never received it. Waffles with strawberries and cream were 3/5. Solid but they were not too special, more like a hotel waffle maker free breakfast type. The strawberries were fresh though. I traveled to New York for a short trip, and I had stopped here after an event. This rating is based mainly on customer service for a to-go order. Utterly rude customer service. We were told to order at one location for to-go order and then told we can't be standing there since there's a sign that says "do not sit here". When they moved us, we were then informed we can't stand at the new location and have to wait outside. By the time we ordered, I had dropped my credit card in the restaurant and was trying to find it. When I was asked to pay, I informed them to wait a few minutes for me to try to find my credit card. The waiter rolled her eyes at me, and was like "you lost your credit card?" with a "I don't want to deal with you" expression. Even after that, we were informed to wait outside, meaning that they had disregarded my request to find my credit card. I unfortunately did not find it and had to lock the card. I ended up paying via Apple Pay. As I left the bathroom, the waiter handed me my food item I ordered but did not tell me that my friend's order was also in the bag. We ended up waiting an additional 10 minutes outside to see if my friend's order was ready. The waiter then walked outside and said check the brown bag. Judge the food based on the picture and trying it out yourself. The eggs are over easy, which is what I had requested. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Corned beef hash - would not at all recommend. Staying nearby, we looked up a diner close by and this was right around the corner. It said it closed at 2:45 pm and it was right before 2 pm when we were walking in, only to be greeted very rudely with a "We're CLOSED" by the server. The place was busy and we came an hour before closing so we figured we had had at least 1/2 hour for eggs and potatoes. Fine. On Monday morning we decided to try again. Opens at 7 am, and we arrived at 7:50 am. It's not open yet but we see someone inside cleaning and a gentleman outside said he was told they would open at 8. We decided to wait (mind you it was FREEZING OUTSIDE). 8 am rolled around and nothing. 8:10 am and we're told (again, rudely) that it would be 15 minutes more till they open. At least let us in to warm up? I had to get back to my hotel and on my computer to start working at 9 am... I didn't have time to stand in the cold hoping they would take my money. Honestly 2 stars is generous , the first thing was how dirty it was there was a dead fly on our table and then once we ordered the people were just ok and I went on a group trip and we had reserved the restaurant and wouldn't give us juice or a drink unless we paid more. Working from my hotel room, I go on Yelp to find a diner close by, and Pearl Street pops up literally a few yards away, so I checked their hours and see that I have more than an hour before closing time. Braving the cold and blustery weather, we make it to Pearl Street and enthusiastically step in searching for a nice warm dinner. What we encounter is a very rude lady barking at us that they are CLOSED. No problem, we leave immediately and go find another place to eat that wants to exchange our hard-earned money for good food and warm service. Fast forward to a couple of days later, we only have a limited amount of time for breakfast before having to jump on a conference call, despite our misgivings, we decide to give this place another try. We arrive 15 minutes after their posted opening time and there are a couple of people waiting outside the front door. One of the waiting patrons informs us that the person inside the establishment told him that it would be about 5 more minutes before he would open, so we decided to wait. 10 minutes later, we are just about to leave when a lady shows up and starts knocking on the door, it is apparent that she works here, now keep in mind it is 30 minutes past their posted opening time. When the gentleman inside opens the door for her, he rudely yells at the small crowd gathered waiting for them to open that it will be 15 minutes more. So here's the thing, nowadays, everyone is going through something, and we have to be mindful and humane and understand that not everything is honky dory, but good manners and proper behavior towards those people who are coming to your establishment, never go out of style. I for one, don't enjoy being yelled at when patiently waiting for someone to be ready especially when I am going to spend my money at their establishment. Pearl Street, your fake reviews won't make up for your rude behavior. The answer to your problem is simple and you already have an open establishment, be kind to your clients, they keep you in business. read more
