I recently purchased an older used car. I scheduled an appointment for a steering and suspension evaluation and the 120 point inspection. They called me at 9am asking how soon i I could bring the car in, and I could immediately sense the incompetence. He told me shocks and struts take a long time to replace. Said it could take a long time so he kept insisting I drop it off instead of waiting. I corrected him and said its just the 120 point inspection. The website estimates 45 minutes. He asked if it was just a New York State inspection like he didn't understand the services they have listed on the site. I corrected him again and asked for the 120 point. "Just bring it in." So I did. Keys were in their hands before 9:45am. He told the tech it was in for an NYS inspection. And yet again I had to correct him on the services I made an appointment for. Since an Uber back home is $30 one way without a tip, I walked to Walmart and hung out for about 2 hours with no updates. I decided to head back and hoped they at least had a chance to get started on it but saw it still parked where I had left it. I went inside and asked for an update. He said they hadn't been able to get to it yet. At that point I just asked for my keys back. I was frustrated and asked him why he asked me to bring it in 3.5 hours early. He came back with an attitude saying he had an employee call out and he can't control how much they get done when they're short a person. My response was, That's the whole point of an appointment." As a result, I scheduled a 9:30 AM appointment at Pep Boys in Henrietta. Unfortunately, the experience that followed was unacceptable on several levels. Upon arrival, the store was not yet open. I was told the manager, Chris, had forgotten his keys at home in Hilton, resulting in a delayed opening and backup of all appointments. My vehicle, a red Hyundai Tucson, was not pulled into the bay until approximately 10:10 AM--40 minutes past my scheduled time. Shortly after, staff confused my car with another customer's orange Chevrolet SUV. Around 11:00 AM, I was called to the front and asked if I was the customer who needed a rear brake job. I clarified that I had only come in for a state inspection. It appeared there had been another mix-up, as the other customer had a similar-sounding last name (Foss; mine is Bock). Hours later, I was again told that I owed $469 for a brake replacement I did not authorize. I declined the repair and requested my original brakes be reinstalled. When the mechanic returned my car to the lot, I was standing nearby and overheard him loudly cursing--using multiple expletives--apparently unaware of my presence. This behavior was highly unprofessional and inappropriate. I was ultimately told my vehicle failed inspection due to "metal-on-metal" rear brakes and warped rotors. I strongly disagreed, as I know the condition of my vehicle. I paid the $21 failure fee, though I firmly believe the car should have passed. The next day a trusted mechanic--who is very familiar with New York State inspection guidelines--replaced the rear brakes while I was at work. He confirmed that the rotors were not warped, and the brake pads still had approximately 5,000 miles of safe use remaining. I returned to Pep Boys at 5:15 PM to have the inspection completed, as instructed by Chris. However, a staff member named Paul told me I would now need to schedule another appointment and go through the full inspection process again. In addition to this frustrating and time-consuming ordeal, I missed out on valuable billable time with a client due to the delays and disorganization. Over the span of four hours, I could have earned $211.52 (at my rate of $52.88/hour), had I not been dealing with this situation. Worst experience at an automobile service operation that I have ever had. Last week I met with the General Manager, Paul Gersonia, regarding new tires for my Lexus RX350. After receiving his recommendation, I set an appointment for 10:00AM today to have them installed. I sat in the waiting room from 10:00AM until 2:10PM...and my car never left the spot I parked it in. No one EVER came in to communicate with me or to see how I was doing or to update me. The front desk was covered in parts, paperwork and other various clutter. Location appears to have been previously car repair with attached store, but now just car repair. I was having an issue that I believed was my battery but wasn't sure and was incorrectly evaluated by AAA and unable to get in to dealer for weeks. Called Pep Boys up and they were able to get me in that morning, I was so appreciative. They warned me that it might be several hours, as I didn't have a prior appointment. I waited in their simple waiting area that had chairs and a TV. They had my car in, diagnosed, and fixed issue within 1 hour. There are coupons online and price was reasonable, especially given last minute repair. Staff was so friendly and overall had an excellent experience. Why oh why do we keep going back? Third bad experience with them. This time we went to have tires installed that we had purchased through Tire Rack. Dropped off a little before scheduled appointment. They looked to make sure they had the tires. 4.5 hours later they called to ask where the tires were. This was the first issue which now seems minor honestly. We reminded them that they had the tires and that they confirmed that at drop off. Issue two, it seems that they didn't start our car till there were no more walk-ins. There were no other cars being worked on when we got there. They literally did our car last. Why make an appointment?! Third issue. Another hour and a half passed and still no word from them so we decided to just head over. Didn't see the car anywhere; not in a bay, not in the parking lot. We parked. After about five minutes it comes FLYING into the parking lot. Imagine our surprise when the mechanic begins to do donuts in it, not once, but twice. It's all wheel drive so it was more like a a drift and a fishtail...almost into the curb. We immediately began recording. I went in to tell the staff inside. I said, "Did you know our car was not here when we got here?" I told him as we waited we saw it come driving into the parking lot and that the mechanic is currently out there doing donuts. He looked stunned initially and then tried to say his mechanic would never, but another customer had come in with me and confirmed that he absolutely was. My daughter spoke to the mechanic who said he was testing the, I believe he said ABS brakes. Nothing, absolutely nothing needs to be tested by attempting donuts and we told him as much. The mechanic gave the same story to the counter staff. The gentleman at the desk backed him up saying he said he was testing something. I asked him if he actually believed him? Again, sir, nothing needs to be tested by doing donuts in the snow. They began to charge us the full amount. My daughter, said excuse me? I'm not paying for the tire install. You never called to say it was done and we have proof your mechanic took it for a joy ride. I wish we'd thought to take a picture of the miles because I'd truly like to know how long he was gone. When we picked it up, I mentioned that they never called us. The man at the counter said the car had just been finished and he was about to call. I said when? You didn't even know it wasn't still in the garage!! This was our second time going to Pep Boys for tires and here's how it went...First off, we purchased the same tires for my wife's 2017 Encore as the ones we purchased for my 2019 Encore...These tires were Tiger Paws made by Uniroyal...Now we dropped off the car and waited for about 4 hours for the phone text that the car was ready...I picked up the car and drove it home but something seemed strange in the feel of the car...I check the tire pressure, and all 4 tires were way under the PSI that was recommended by the tire manufacturer, waaaaaaaaay off...So, I went to the gas station down the road, and filled them to the right PSI...BUT, they still didn't feel right, something was off with the ride of my car...I had a NYS inspection coming due in a couple of days and so I had the dealership check the tires and they did just that...When picking up my car I was told that 3 out of 4 tires were defective and could not be balanced on their tire balance machine which they said was state of the art...I then called Pep Boys and told them what the dealership had said, and they said to bring it in to be looked at...I then notified the Pep Boys corporation online and told them I wanted three new tires and they said that they would do just that and that they would contact the store we purchased them from and all would be taken care of...When I picked up the car I was told that they changed the 3 bad tires...Well, it has been three weeks or so and the tires still aren't riding right...I'm done trying to get what we paid for, which was $850 dollars' worth of tire garbage...BUT, I will tell everyone NOT to purchase tires or have any serve done by Pep Boys, at least at this location...Terrible experience from day one...This Pep Boys sucks! read more

I shopped for tires online and found a reasonably good deal on the Pep Boys website with the ability to schedule the appointment right online. They had open appointments on Sunday - yeah! After making the appointment I received a call back for confirmation and to go over a few things. Good service! I arrived about 20 minutes early and found everyone running around taking care of customers. Apparently one of their service managers had quit and they were short-handed. Either way, they still got to me before my appointment time. I was checked in in less that two minutes because I had done my shopping online.The person checking me in was the same person who had called me after I made the appointment online. The tires were installed reasonably fast and at the advertised prices, four tires for the price of three. This was a good experience from a service perspective. The folks onsite did a great job. One more thing, Pep Boys corporate should pay a little more attention. Printers broken, sealing tiles dirty, and the "customer lounge" is very poor, especially considering what some of the other places in the area are doing (including free coffee, etc.) The store could use a facelift. read more

The service guy said my car needed $800 in repairs to pass the NY state inspection. Turns out it only needed $11 in repairs. When I called and asked about the estimate from Pepboys they then claim that was just what they recommended not just what was necessary to pass the inspection. Dishonest service department. I would "RECOMMEND " people who don't want to be lied to and ripped off to stay away from Pepboys. I wouldn't trust them to do any work at all. Scheduled an appointment for a flat tire, waited 90 minutes for the tire to be 'fixed' and was sent on my way. Two hours later the car was telling me the air pressure was low so I returned to the location to make them aware. All they did was put more air into it and tell me the tech must have forgotten to fill it all the way. The next day the tire is completely flat again. I called the shop to try and get the car back in ASAP as it is my work vehicle. I was told I can not get in until tomorrow afternoon or I would have to wait through the weekend until Monday morning. The fact that I already spent half my morning in their waiting room once this week was infuriating enough but to not get an unsatisfied customer in ASAP is insane. Made an appointment over a week ago & "Peter" calls up the evening before to try to cancel the appointment. When I refuse to cancel the appointment "Peter" then tries to say it will take 6 hours or more & that we should just drop the vehicle off because it might even not get done until the next day. "Peter" then tries to convince us to cancel the scheduled appointment again. "Peter" even says having an appointment isn't a guarantee & that people don't get to see doctors on time when they have doctors appointments. He says that having an appointment isn't a guarantee several times like he's going to convince me that his delusion is a fact. We even called ahead of time before making the appointment online & they said it would be a simple job that would take an hour but "Peter" is overbooked & now wants to cancel at 7:30p the night before not even allowing us the time to take the vehicle somewhere else. "Peter" is an asshat & should be fired for incompetence. I've worked at a place similar to pep boys before so I know how the system works. He didn't bother to even look on the computer or anything. At all. I brought my car in for an oil change. I wanted someone to look it over and see if anything could be contributing to a poor gas mileage problem I have been having. I was told I needed to make a different appointment, no big deal but slight nuisance. The oil change was done, it took about 45 minutes. The guy at the counter was very pleasant. The next day as I went to get in my car to drive 69 miles away, I dropped my coffee by my car and when I bent down to pick it up I noticed my back tires looked low. I checked the pressure at a gas station. My rear right was at 4 pounds of pressure and the back left was at 15 pounds of pressure. I called pep boys to see if they had filled it and it went flat overnight. Apprently they don't check tire pressure as part oil their routine oil changes. So they either A.) they noticed it and didn't care to tell me or option B.) they didn't notice a nearly flat rear tire and rather low second tire! I don't know about you all but the point for me of bringing my car in is to have someone with knowledge check it out. Letting a car drive-out of the garage with 4 pounds of pressure in a back tire is "scary!" maybe the workers are a bit stretched too thin? Poor pep boys dudes! read more

They are definitely good guys here. They are hard working and sometimes seem a little understaffed. Went in for a yearly inspection, oil changed, and tires rotated. I usually wait and it takes approximately an hour when you walk-in, depending on the day. On this day I dropped my car off and ran chores, 4 hours later, the work still wasn't done. I waited another hour at the shop and they finished. This isn't a usual experience for me at this location for me, but it still wasn't stellar. Just keep in mind that when you're asking for walk-in service, you may have to wait. Also my tire pressure light came on a week after visiting and they were supposed to be checked. 3 stars because I know you guys do better, but I may take my business to a local shop going forward. read more

I used to go here frequently because it was conveniently within walking distance. I have never been impressed by the customer service. There is always a long wait and they have only called me to let me know my car is ready about 2 out of 10 times. Once they almost closed the shop without even calling me! Most recently, I had my oil changed. I have a VW and they used conventional oil (not good for the car). When I took the car to another location, I discovered they never even bothered to change the filter! Do not go to pepboys in henrietta unless you have no other choice. My car battery died this morning leading me to call AAA who let me know my battery was fried. I called Pep boys and was told I could come right in to have my battery changed. I realized I was due for an oil change as well. The employee first told me there was not enough time as he was squeezing me in between 2 appointments. A moment later he was like what the heck, we will make time. I was told the wait would be about 45 minutes. 1.5 hours goes by, the employee comes back and mentions I need new wiper blades. I had already purchased a pair and let employee know. He said he would put them on. Overall, the wait was 1 hr 45 mins. I am reading all the negative reviews and I am so shocked ! I've had a great experience each and every single time I have been here. I've had tire issues with two cars now, they have always taken my car with no appointment and always call right away to give me price estimate. The workers always ask detailed questions about the car prior to taking it in. This time around I was told at a dealership that I had a valve steem leak, got here nothing detected. They tripled checked took their time to ask me when I have filed my tires, how long it usually takes for tire pressure like to come back on, very detailed very caring. I popped in the other day for an estimate to get a wheel bearing fixed. I was quoted $425. Really? The part is $45 and it only takes an hour (about $100). The manager said it was because they needed to check brake cylinder pressure/fluid because I have ABS. What B.S. It's a quick connect that plugs into the hub. As I was walking out, he said he could do it "right now" for $400. I kept walking. I have not been there for 20 years. I had bought tires and had a clutch replaced. The clutch lasted a year and the lugs tended to break from over tightening. That's why I stopped going. I had 4 new winter tires installed with an alignment. I scheduled my appointment for 12pm thinking it would be finished in a couple hours and it could go about my day. Upon drop off, I was told it was expected to be finished by 6pm like that was a good thing. I rolled with it and walked around town in a winter storm finally coming back to check on my car around 615. Apparently my car had just recently begun work and they were just finishing up installing the tires at that point. I sat in the waiting room another 2 hours before it was finished. My question is--what's the point of dropping off my car at 12 pm to let them hold on to it for no reason if they're not going to even start on the car until 5 hours later??? Shouldn't they just have the appointment schedule for 5 or 6 pm instead then? I'm not interested in coming back here. So this past week I had to deal with pep boys again in CA. And it reminded me of a situation I came into with this exact location in Rochester. So here is the scenario. I need a set of tires. I pay, they install, all good. I then proceed immediately on a 2 hour highway trip home to Utica. So no real stops along the way. Just as I am getting off the highway I realize braking is really hard. Like I am pumping my brakes and its almost like they aren't gripping anything and I hear a grinding/crunching sound. I pull into a gas station and check if my brakes pads are still there. Yep they are there. Hmm ok, so I drive it to my house and am out of traffic's way. I go to the driver wheel and dust off something around the lug nut ... and it moves. I grabbed it with my hand and gave it a flick and it unscrewed in my hand. I tested my new found super human strength on the others and to my surprise I'm freakin superman. I tightened the lugs and got in the car the next morning and went straight to the same Pep Boys location (2 hours drive back). I waited for customers to clear out of the service area and asked to talk to the service supervisor. I explained the situation. The response was shocking, "Sir how do you know it was us that didn't tighten the lug nuts?" I responded, "Well because my hobby of randomly removing my wheels wasn't that interesting so I stopped it years ago." I was then told there was no need for sarcasm. I know its one of those things that can't be proved so I wasn't expecting them to shiver or anything, just meant it as a quality control issue. They told me they would work it out by giving me a free tire rotation ... As if I was going to let them remove the wheels again. The insanity still makes me angry. At 9:45 we were told their 8 am appointments had gotten behind, so it would be just a little longer. At 10:45 we still hadn't been brought in and when we talked to the manager he told us all the bays were full and there was nothing he could do, and it was going to be a while still. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable. You don't schedule an appointment for someone and not get to them for 3 hours!!!! I needed a new set of tires and found a deal online with Pepboys that I thought was pretty reasonable. I made an appointment, and when I got there the staff was instantly unfriendly and intimidating (of course because I am easy prey being a young girl at an automotive shop), and tried to upsell me right away. After waiting three hours they insisted I purchase new lugnuts because mine were swollen and rusted...ok. So, a week and a half later I am driving down the expressway and my car is making a concerning noise and shaking badly. So, I pull over and have it towed to my garage. Turns out, one lugnut on my front passenger tire had fallen off completely, and the other three were loose (all brand new ones by the way). My wheel was falling off! So,of course I went back to PepBoys and complained. First of all, they just glared at me when I told them, looking completely unconcerned that I could have been in a serious accident if my wheel had fallen off. Then, they proceeded to check their camera footage of my tire installation and tell me they did everything right so it couldn't possibly be their fault. Well, I'm not sure who else has removed and reinstalled my tire since they put it on...? And then they tried to blame it on my rims... I have whatever rims came with my car. And also, they do this for a living, they should know how to tighten lugnuts on a tire no matter the rims. I've gone to Pep Boys my whole life. Most locations are decent if you drop off and let them take their time. The guys at this location are extremely rude, and lazy if you ask me. I have witnessed guys in the shop purposefully be slow to spite the guys out front. I have been ostracized for asking a question about my car, or asking why my scheduled oil change has taken over 2 hours. Never fall into the trap of buying into the rewards or rebate programs. They are disorganized, won't come through, and every store employee will refer you to a national phone number that "doesn't see anything in their system". Called early in the day to make an appointment to have a slow leaking tire fixed. I was told they could fix it and no appointment was necessary. Came in a few hours later, I was told they could *maybe* squeeze it in for end of day (about 4 hours away).
