I absolutely hate parking in this area. Circling the streets forever to find parking here is the worse thing there. The Food and the service on the other hand, amazing! There was never a time when my water cup was empty. Staff would come around super often and refill waters. Great and delicious combo meals all around. Pretty small restaurant over all, so they try to get you in and out. Really hot inside as well, so the staff kept opening the door to let fresh air in. I really liked this restaurant. While there was room for improvement for some of the dishes, I really enjoyed it overall and would recommend it to others. There was a little wait, but it wasn't too long, considering how small the restaurant is. It was very tight spaces, and filled with happy customers. We ordered the spring rolls as an appetizer, garlic noodles with chicken, charbroiled pork, and charbroiled beef, and some iced coffee. The spring rolls had too much vermicelli for my preference; the ratio just seemed off. The beef was pretty good, no comments. The pork had great flavor in the marinade, but I do wish that it had more of a smoky char flavor. The chicken though, was absolutely the star; I don't normally order chicken at restaurants, but it was super flavorful and crispy and easily the best dish of the day. The garlic noodles were really great, very flavorful as well; however, it was a little dry, and given the ratio of noodles to protein, it was very hard to eat all of the noodles. I did like the coffee; they serve it in a traditional Vietnamese phin, which is always appreciated. The coffee was strong without being too bitter or sweet, hitting the perfect balance. A gem in Inner Sunset! Walked in on a cold Monday evening and was craving something brothy and hearty. I was debating between the beef combo pho and curry chicken vermicelli, but our waiter recommended the satay beef pho--and safe to say, it was delicious and hit the spot! You could really taste the rich umami flavor and the noodles soaked all of the delicious broth. The soup base was so interesting, as I could definitely taste the typical pho broth, but the satay flavor added so much uniqueness to the dish. The beef was tender but not too fatty, and thinly sliced in good quantities. Only thing was that it felt a bit too oily, so I ended up not drinking as much of the broth. The five spice chicken garlic with garlic noodles was spectacular as well--a heaping portion of noodles and tender, juicy chicken is all that you could ask for. Noodles themselves retained the nice garlic flavor, but I only wish there were more veggies on the plate besides two pieces of broccoli. We originally wanted to swap out the imperial rolls (fried ground pork rolls) with shrimp rolls, but we weren't able to. Regardless, the imperial rolls were delicious, crispy, and filled to the brim with the meat filling. Perilla is now one of my go-to spots for Vietnamese food. The staff were incredibly nice, always checking on us and refilling our cups. They were incredibly enthusiastic and greeted us with smiles. Great food quality and service, complemented with the *incredibly* reasonable prices (less than $15 per dish), and this really is a no brainer. It's been 10+ years since my last review here - time for an update! I've been to Perilla numerous times since then, especially over the last few years. It's a great solid spot in the Inner Sunset neighborhood when I want something yummy, filling, and affordable. My go-to here is now usually the Pho Tai (pho with rare beef) - it's simple and delicious. The pho broth is savory and satisfying to drink, not overly salty; I can actually finish the entire bowl of soup without feeling terribly thirsty afterwards. Other items I'd get again: + Spring rolls: lots of veggies, fresh + Vermicelli with Imperial egg rolls and five spice chicken: really good! The Charbroiled Pork vermicelli is also a solid option + Vietnamese coffee I'm still not a fan of the garlic noodle plates - the garlic noodles aren't garlicky enough and the broccoli is usually too crunchy for me. Got recommend their garlic noodles by a friend! Came here on a Friday at 6:30 PM and there was plenty of seating still available and not too noisy; the host said we could sit anywhere. The staff were super attentive; I don't think my tea ever fell half-empty because they were constantly refilling it. The pho really hit the spot on a cold day: the soup was hot and fragrant, the noodles were delightfully bouncy, and the beef was so tender. The imperial rolls here are also out of this world. They were freshly fried and paired so well with the crunchy lettuce, cucumber, mint, and sauce on the side. Arguably...lifechanging? Really big portions for a great price as well. While I didn't get their garlic noodles this time around, I've tried the Haight Street location for takeout and the garlic noodles are truly amazing. So chewy and buttery and fragrant and tasted great with the five spice chicken. I saw people around me at this Irving location order garlic noodles and the portion size was huge, like an entire mountain of noodles on a plate. The garlic noodles were way too hard. The pho chicken really just came with plain pho and a side of chicken. One perk about this is place that they give really large portions, especially when it comes to the noodles. We came here on a Monday afternoon and there was a steady amount of people coming in to dine in and pick up food. We were lucky to get a table without a wait. But maybe it's common since I did call in advance and they said they don't take reservations and that there was no line/wait at the moment. We ordered the grilled pork garlic noodles with egg rolls, the chicken curry with garlic noodles, a side of beef pho broth, and a Thai tea. Each dish was very good with pretty good flavors. The chicken curry base had coconut milk, and was fragrant. The only thing was that there were only 2 pieces of potatoes and too much chicken, so the proportions were a little off for me. There was also a lot of pork in the dish, but the pork was not as good without the fish sauce -- same can be said about the egg rolls. The garlic noodles though were really great -- the right amount of moist, chew, and flavor. The Thai tea was also pretty basic. The service was good, and everyone there was nice. They do have one bathroom, which you have to cut across/near the kitchen in the back to get, so that is a little tricky. As for parking, we were able to find a spot right near the restaurant on a Monday, but I'm sure it is tougher on the weekends. Perilla, is a cozy Vietnamese Restaurant on Irving Street in the Inner Sunset area of San Francisco. The name is unique (not to be confused with the South American, Parilla term) and I learned that it is the name of a leaf. We were there for lunch and ordered two entrees. First, the Mi Toi Cha GioGa Quay Chao (Imperial Rolls and Five Spice Chicken Garlic Noodles). The rolls were different, a coarse crispness on the outside with a pork filling on the inside. The chicken also had a crunch on the outside and was moist and tender on the inside. The thick garlic noodles had a lite flavor, were dry and would have been better if they were freshly prepared. For the second dish, the Com Ga Ca Ri (Curry Chicken Rice Plate). All South East and Southern Asian cuisines have their own version of curry and as expected, this was different in taste and fragrance. The chicken pieces were tough, but abundant.
