Been meaning to try this place for the longest time. When my car broke down on the freeway and barely made it to Geneva on Wed, I finally had my chance. Lately, I've been the king of making the best of a bad situation so I figured I'd might as well hit their bathroom and have a good lunch before calling a tow truck. As I walked in, the girl working the counter and the guy cooking in the back were really nice and greeted me. The menu board was easy to understand and prices looked reasonable. I ordered some fries and a cheesesteak with provolone, peppers, and onions...no whiz. I am happy to say that it was really good! The meat of the cheesesteak was nicely seasoned and had good flavor. I actually liked the taste of the meat (menu says top loin) at Phillies way better than the meat at Jake's which lately seems bland and underseasoned. If Phillies increased the amount of meat to the level of Jakes, I would say hands down that Phillies has the ultimate cheesesteak in SF. It would be so killer! Regardless, I enjoyed it a lot and I can honestly say that it is definitely one of the best in SF. My thought is raise your prices if you have to, but make it with too much meat and this thing would be legendary! The fries were cooked perfectly too. Nothing fancy, but hot, golden goodness. I was heading back home late Saturday night, and wanted something quick and more on the simple side - by that I mean not spending over $20 because I want everything on the menu. I saw a cheese steak place and figured let's give it a shot! Located off Geneva and Mission, and dangerously close to Dark Horse Tavern, this hole in the wall cheese steak place is worth stopping in. 1) It's a good cheese steak. I'm not saying this is the best I've had (I still love you Philly Phlava!) but this might be one of the best in the Bay Area. Solidly grilled meat, good provolone, nice grilled onions, and that mayo. But more importantly... 2) They get Amoroso Rolls. If you know anything about philly cheese steaks, it has to come on an Amoroso Roll. Something about it absorbs the delicious meat juice, cheese, grease, and mayo perfectly. 3) They do offer cheese whiz for the purists, and it is their best seller. But I'll stick with provolone for the time being. 4) Holy crap do they have a great bottled beer selection and a few on tap. I considered chugging one but as I wasn't too familiar with this part of Outer Mission and all the pedestrian traffic I came across, I'm glad I did not. 5) They do have Saranac's Shirley Temple AKA the Manliest Beverage on Earth! (also just learned Saranac does make beers. Neat.) So if you are ever craving a solid cheese steak in this part of the City, this is the one I recommend. read more

I was just out in Philly for a wedding and part of our trip consisted of a grand tour of every solid philly cheesesteak spot given to us by a total enthusiast. What I found is that a proper cheese steak has the tasty and squishy bun, really juicy meat and cheese wiz. Of course you can jazz it up with some other ingredients but if you want a classic, there it is. My husband and I were looking for a spot near our house to get a quick bit pretty late night. In the Excelsior this can be a challenge. We remembered about Phillies just opening up and decided to give it a try. Holy Shit! This place is legit. Perfect buns that they get straight from the city of Brotherly Love. Amazingly juicy meat that they do not go stingy on. The Wiz and some slammin' peppers. They don't stop there. The fries were fresh and cooked perfectly. Next time I am going to splurge on some onion rings and some of the other sides because they were looking really good. A couple other points about this place is that they kept the menu limited to what they are good at- Cheesesteaks with a solid assortment of your classic sides. This place is also IMMACULATELY clean. I really, really, really wanted to like this place. I wanted to come ever since it opened. I had to drop my cousin off at Balboa Bart so we came here for dinner since it was on the way. The two employees were outside and followed us inside when they saw us enter. I ordered the veggie with avocado and provolone. I also got onion rings. My cousin ordered the mushroom steak and she didn't know what kind of cheese she wanted. She said American but then the cashier said cheese whiz was the best so she got that instead. The cashier is pretty charming. All the other customers that came in either knew him, or he is just really good at hamming it up with them. Pros: - The food came out crazy hot. My cousin and I both burnt our hands half way through eating. A good, solid Steak outside of Philly. I went to college in Philadelphia and had my share of Steaks and I can say that this one is a match for any I ate there. I must advise I was never the biggest fan of the traditional steak, as I need some roughage and tomatoes to balance the grease, but I like that it at least tasted good. So you can forget traveling and waiting in the long lines at Pat's and Geno's - you can get a good one here. They even get the bread from Philly, apparently. UPDATE 4/20/11: Today may go down in history as the day of the spiciest Philly I have ever eaten. I will call it "The Day of My Spiciest Philly" day. A purveyor of chilis and spices alike, I was anticipating the next creation from the Chef. Today it was the BUFFALO STEAK. Now mind you, I enjoy the tear inducing effects of the hot stuffs and have nary a problem delecting on the spiciest of the spicy so my description may be a bit skewed to left(the left side being the spicier of the right and left sides). Unlike the Banh Mi', which when bitten into at strategic locations can give bursts of gunfire-like heat, the Buffalo Steak and the deep relish it is concocted in engulfs the eater's tender mouth lining with napalm-like coverage. Not to say it is the spiciest thing I have ever eaten, not by a longshot but for a Philly and with the constant refueling of the fire with the aforementioned nectar of Buffalo is what made it biteful. The loud flavor was neutralized modestly with a liberal helping of the Whiz, only to have the flavors flip again with a strong finish from the peppers. You can always count on the meat being consistent so nothing more to say other than, d-lish-amundo. My hands and face were covered with the sauce and cheese gravy. I looked in the mirror and smiled. Phillies is AWESOME! Best Philly Cheese steak in SF. Well I also like Phat Philly as well, so its hard to say which one is better. But this is REALLY GOOD. I came to Phillies today for lunch. i had a regular cheese steak with the whiz cheese (It was different and the guy recommended it, so its all good) I onions and peppers on it, I also ordered onion rings and a drink. Total was $11.50. Not to shabby for lunch. The cheese steak sandwich was AWESOME. I loved it, wanted to get another one but I was super full. The onion rings and fries were frozen. Well they were cooked when I ate them but they weren't good. I just wont order onion rings or fries next time. Thursdays they got a special: Philly Cheese steak, fries, soda for $10. So my sister had a brilliant idea (not being sarcastic) to do a self-directed foodie tour of a nearby neighborhood on foot, since there was like a string of eateries up and down the street. So she wanted to start at Phillies, which she already knew and loved, but wanted to share with me, a San Diegan, not a San Franciscan. So, here's my past experience with cheesesteaks: someone says, let's get cheesesteaks, my mouth waters even though I'm thinking, oh crap, the calories!, but then because my mouth is watering, I go with the person to get the cheesesteak, eat the cheesesteak, but then feel like a lingering regret for eating the cheesesteak, since it tasted much better in my mind than what I actually had. (And, yeah, I've never had a real Philly cheesesteak to compare anything to). Anyway, not wanting to be a killjoy and because I had the automatic salivatory response anyway even after all my past experiences (and because I knew my boyfriend would really want to go), we went to Phillies. My sister asked them to slice the cheesesteaks into 3 separate pieces (we were on a self-guided food tour, so had to keep room available for other stuff). We tried the Works, and man, this is the first time I can say that the cheesesteak lived up to what my taste buds imagined a cheesesteak could be and should be. The meat was just so flavorful and everything else inside of the c.s. was like, complementing it and not overwhelming, all working together to create total cheesesteak yumminess-perfection. But, anyway...we were attempted to just order more cheesesteaks and stop right there, because we all agreed, it was goood! but we were on a mission, and we had to complete it...next stop, Batter Up, a corn dog joint right down the street...on we went, despite a strong temptation to just go all out at Phillies. Amoroso rolls are imported from Philly, toasted on both sides. Provolone slapped onto sizzling meat and peppers, then flipped into the roll...my first bite was crunchy, chewy, doughy and juicy. My father chose pepper steak w/ bell peppers, onions, peppers and whiz...his eyes bugged outta his head! He loved it! Repeatedly told them hed be back. The staff welcomes everyone who comes in. You can eat inside and watch tv. Everytime I try a philly cheesesteak somewhere else... it is not the same. I always end up coming back here for more. I have been to quite a few Philly joints in San Francisco and I have to say this one is by far the best Philly cheesesteak by far. I have visited this multiple times because I can't get enough of the cheesesteaks. I absolutely love every single one of the phillies and I have tried them all at least once. By far, my favorite phillycheese steak at Phillies has I be the buffalo steak. I add ranch into the mix of the buffalo, which isn't on the menu but the mixture of the delicious buffalo sauce and the ranch is AMAZING. Everyone must try it! The atmosphere is nice and cozy and you can watch music videos while you sit and eat. The employees are always nice and comforting. This place has everything to make me a regular. Okay here goes! I have been meaning to try this place for a while now. So I called in my order silly me didn't have a menu just know what I like. The young lady that picked up the phone was very nice she took my order without hesitation. So I arrive, it's lunchtime the strong aroma of onions hit me before I stepped in the door there are only two people inside. The grill is going, the cook is sweating and the nice young lady greets me at the register, she calls out my name (I'm impressed) Do I look like a Stacey NAH Couldn't be! So in about 5 minutes I'm walking out the door with a white bag that is beginning to show signs of leakage. I get excited (Must be what the Fresh-Prince has always talked about). So I get in my car and head back to the office. I go back to my office and open my bag and Wah-LA! The most delectable Fries one could taste YUM YUM YUM! So I eat a few of those before I unwrap my Steak ---- first the sheet of paper then the foil All while dabbing with paper-towels. Then I take that first bite of My (Mushroom Phillie) Good! and then I take another bite little dry! And this continues throughout my experience with this delectable sandwich. Alright *cracking knuckles and neck* first and foremost, I want to say that I really miss Starvin' Marvin's! But once I noticed this place, I was like alright, what the hell. It was a thursday afternoon, I stepped in, readily greeted took a look at the menu and almost everything on there sounded appetizing. Of course the Mushroom Cheesesteak called to me, so I got that with some fries and a drink... When I got it I was like "DAAAYMN" never been much of a cheesteak buff or anything but it looked great! Stuffed with steaky goodness along with the peppers, grilled onions, and of course the mushrooms baby!! All in all, I was a good sandwich. The establishment has been greatly revamped inside compared to Starvin' Marvin's, really clean, the people are hella friendly. This all sounds like a 5 star status review right? Certainly does!!! BUT! The only thing that kinda threw me off was the lacking in cheese in my sandwich AND the steak itself lacked a little seasoning nothing hella major. Thats just me though, I have really sensitive taste buds. Perhaps throw on a little more salt and pepper into the mix and a little more cheese. Which I highly recommend, add more cheese for $.50, it'll definitely be worth it! Anyways, I still love the cheesesteak though, very good job! I tried this place for a midweek dinner with my wife and while it was a decent sandwich and a good value, it wasn't "outstanding". Phillies offers a solid product but it's not "awe inspiring" -- even with mushrooms and cheese whiz. After all, it's still a cheesesteak. The guys working there were pretty friendly as well so I have no complaints there. The obvious place to compare it to is Phat Philly in the Mission. IIRC, the cheesesteaks @ Phat Philly are pricier but the meat seemed more flavorful there. * Parking is easier at Phillies than Phat Philly. * I liked the rolls at Phillies -- they were crunchy and the grease didn't melt it's way through the roll immediately. I probably wouldn't recommend this for take-out though (or any cheesesteak for takeout -- for that matter). * The fries were OK but nothing special. * As mentioned above, I believe Phillies has a better priced sandwich. * This place is good enough that I'm willing to go back and try the Zucchini bread (fried zucchini) and chicken cheeseteak. Would I put it on our regular restraurant rotation? That's still TBD. After all, there are SO MANY places to eat in SF.... Q: Would I grab a bite here if I was in the neighborhood? A: Sure. Q: Is it a place that is delicious enough to drag a bunch of friends across town to eat at? A: Not really. Just amazing! Had it once and I've craved one daily ever since. Perfect amount of cheese and meat. The peppers give it its extra punch, and I usually get it without peppers, since most places have soggy peppers. First time I got the pizza phillie, which I wasn't sure about but it was bomb! After living in this hood for 8 years, I'd always wanted to try this nearby joynt, but sadly, never got around to it. I decided the other day to change that. I walked down the hill, popped inside and ordered. The place is super clean and offers a very decent selection of beers by the bottle and a few on tap. The food arrives and it's good.....not great, but definitely good. For the best Philly cheese steak sammies, I'll stick with A-Jay's Cheese Steaks in Morgan Hill.
