Was hungry for a good philly and did a Yelp search and found this place. Excellent friendly service, legit philly steaks in all different types as well as other sandwiches. A good cheesesteak place. Philly style, and a basic menu. The sides in cheesteak places are usually hit and miss, and that's exactly what happened to me at Phillies. The fried mushrooms were a hit, but the chilli was a big let down, canned perhaps? The "portablella / veggie" sandwich was also a big miss, with barely any portabella I was pretty bummed out when we opened that one. It was mostly peppers and onions. The steaks were decent, although it seemed like the grill wasn't hot enough as the steak came out mostly grey, with a nice hot grill for steak you usually get some crispy parts. Cooking it grey that way tends to steam the steak making it boil a bit. The choice of cheese type was nice, and the dudes at the store were very friendly. All in all a decent cheesesteak place in the notoriously bad sandwich capitol of the world, California. They are at least trying to get it right here, and we appreciate it. read more

I wanted to go to broken record, but since it was a Friday and a nice weather, hubby and i knew that it was gonna busy. I came across this place on Yelp and decided to try this. It's a pretty small place, but it can fit about 4-5 very small groups. Went in to a bright place and it was clean, I like that. Warning: Don't come here looking cute, coz you'll end up smelling like cheesesteak and maybe smothered with sauce when you come out. I got mushroom cheeseteak with whiz, onion and yellow peppers. Hubby got the hoagie steak, whiz, onions, and yellow peppers. We both shared the fries. Warning again: extremely hot it might burn your tongue and very juicy you will need lots of napkins. Cheese steak was goood and tasty! It's not salty yet very flavorful. Don't take this to go or it'll end up soggy or if you take it to go, eat it right away! I tried Phillies for the first time today and it was like OH MY GOD. Well since today is considered the last day of the world, I figured I might as well try this place. I ordered "the works" which has steak, mushrooms, peppers and and grilled onions. the bread was great. It was soft and soaked up all the meat juice and cheese but it wasnt soggy. Just the right texture for the meat. the peppers, mushrooms and onions had a great texture and went well with the sandwich. Since the onions are grilled with the steak they blend in with the steak and are very juicy. Probably had to wait 10 minute for the food to prepare and a little more if there are people in front of you, but its expected. Can't rush. I'd definitely go back to this place. next time I get the urge for a philly, I definitely finna hit up this joint. read more

Ahhh! These guys are so amazing! I put in my last review that I wanted some Flyer's representation, and they totally fulfilled my wish! BEST CHEESTEAKS IN THE CITY! I've tried many places (like The Cheesteak Shop, Buffalo Burgers, etc) and Phillies has the best cheesesteak by far. It's small and in the most random spot and might be hard to catch, but you must find this treasure. I literally work right across the street from The Cheesesteak Shop and have been going there for years, but started getting fed up with the weak chopped up dry meat with barely any cheese, that they were providing. Not to mention the inside of that place smells like a hobo hotel. Seeing as Phillies is right in my hood I decided to give it a shot. Man, why did I wait so long?!?!?! Delicious!! The bf and I agree that this place is LEGIT when it comes to our cheesesteak fix. We love our meaty sandwiches, and Phillies does not dissapoint. Overall a great place to get an authentic Philly cheez. Compared to other cheese steak restaurants in the region the are quite affordable. I tend to like to supe up my Philly cheese with bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and even mushrooms. In comparison with other place where my bill would be any where from $15-$20 a meal my bill was only $13. I work around this area and never been at this place. It just happens i checked on Yelp for some sandwhiches. I read some of the reviews about their sandwiches and got good reviews on their Phillycheesteak. Good thing fellow yelpers mentioned about the "whiz" which i guess in short for cheese whiz. Place was literally trash, I ordered chili fries and they sent me melted cheese with onions in it. the philly was probably the worst of all. Phat Philly set a new standard for cheesesteaks in SF. Things take time to float down to the big E, and so like hipsters, cheesesteaks wit Wiz and on Amoroso rolls have come to Mission & Geneva. The result is pretty darn good. I had a pepper steak to go here the other night and it was darn good - SPICY peppers, some expertly cooked steak and soft, grilled onions. Almost as good as Phat. Phat really finely chops their steak like Pat's style while the steak here is more coarsely chopped like Geno's. Like both they've got the Amoroso rolls here and some peanut chews for sale too. No Utz and Herr's potato chips and no Tastykakes, which is too bad. I'm not even from Philly and I love me some Tastykakes. If I could have one suggestion it would be to squeeze the wiz into the bun before the goodies on a to go order, since 3/4ths of my wiz ended up on the wrapper and not in my sandwich. I'm giving Phillies five-stars because it took me right back to Jim's on South Street....their effort is getting closer to the real thing and probably the best I've had in SF. You can get your provolone with the pizza sauce and all the trimmings, with plenty of Heinz ketchup on tap. The required Amoroso rolls complete the picture. Their coated fries are a revelation (and make sure you get them extra crispy)...some of the best fries ever. Note: The place looks like a complete dive and I'd give the eat-in ambiance 1.5 stars if I were given that option....but here I'm rating the cheesesteaks (they also have chicken, which turned out to be terrific) and the friendly counter help. read more

The streets are a bit sketchy so be on alert.... go in for a safe retreat and forget your diet. Cool spot for some comfort food. Yes, they import their rolls! Provolone is layered on the bottom, then comes the meat and peppers. If you don't like hot peppers then fall back to another type of sandwich. Or get more fries and tots! As much as I liked the steak, and the tots, I was really bothered that the woman at the cash register didn't know much about Philadelphia sports. Ok, maybe too bothered. Maybe I'm still pissed that the Phils lost in the playoffs. I've been trying a number of cheesesteak places in the city and most have been ok, but Phillies nailed it. From the bread they use (what a sweet soft roll!) to the meat (best grade) to the cheese (they offer Cheez Whiz, which I believe is the core ingredient in a cheesesteak). I got the Rocky Balboa and I couldn't wait to get the champ in my belly. They have a contest for anyone who can eat 5 of them and a soda in an hour, the meal is free, they get their name on a wall, a t-shirt, and bragging rights. In three years, one guy has done it. I can see why. This was ginormous! But perfectly made! I also tried the cheesesteak fries with it which came covered in meat, cheese, fried onions, and sweet & hot peppers. Now this brought me back. Was in the neighborhood one night and the place seemed pretty popping according to Yelp. Well, I haven't been disappointed too many times by Yelp so decided to give it a try. Ordered the regular Phillies cheesesteak (~7) and I'd have to say, it was pretty damn good on a cold and chilly night. I can still taste it now...sweet sweet onions and bell peppers...soft, warm bread...wish the steak was not as dry though! I've so far had the teriyaki steak sandwich, the veggie,(portobello mushrooms) and both were amazing. It's a small hole in the wall place. So I recently moved back to the area, and ordered twice from here. However, the flavor is no longer the same. I don't know what, but it's not as good as it used to be 3-4 years ago. At first I thought maybe I don't get the same thing that I used to get, but after the second time, I'm so dissapointed. I used to rave to my friends/roommates when we passed this resto about how good the Mushroom Steak. And they all agreed after ordering it. This is a true hole in the wall type of place. Very little seating, but that isn't a bit deal since we were only there for a to-go order. Lots of options of cheesesteaks and hoagies! Also, this is the first place I've head of that does chili cheese onion rings. My friends all got cheese steaks and I got a side of chili cheese tots. The cheese steaks are a good size with lots of meat on the inside. Very filing and tasty! They use cheese-whiz which I think is pretty silly, but it went pretty well with the food. I asked for provolone, mainly because that's my favorite. They also have a large range of different types of beer and sodas. I need to come back and try them all. We got a Dad's red cream soda. Absolutely opposite experience than several years ago. My Mushroom Cheesesteak with Garlic added was delicious, although it could have used more garlic, but that's just me so next time I'll ask for it. I have three suggestions that would up my review to the competitions 5 Star. Just suggestions. Trying not to be critical or obnoxious: The garlic appears to be small specks, tiny pieces of white garlic that for me don't add much in the way of flavor. I think like the competition they should use soft peeled garlic cloves that melt in your mouth with garlic flavor. The competition's are pre-roasted, however they are real garlic cloves. Also I noticed they took pre-sauteed onions from a metal hot box, reheating them on the grill with the meat. My 5 Star uses fresh, raw onions on the grill. They definitely have more snap & flavor. Also I think heating the Amoroso roll on the grill softens it too much, taking away from its 'chewyness,' not that there's such a word! However like the other place I'm happy Phillies uses Amoroso rolls from Philly. See pic. It was delicious, & the mushrooms were fresh, cooked with the steak & very good. Will be back. I went there for the first time several weeks ago. The people at the counter were friendly and helpful. They asked me what I wanted and I asked what the recommended. They said the cheesesteak with chees whiz, but they had healthier options if I preferred. I decided to just go for it, and get the cheesesteak with cheese whiz and some fries. The shop is small, but clean and new. They have a TV playing which is nice if you're eating alone. There are tables and counter space for dining. The plus for me in the convenience, it's right up the block from my house on the way to BART. The cheesesteaks are large, filling, and they typically throw on any extra's for free if you pay for one (Mushroom Steak, Pepper Steak, etc). The bread is where a sandwich can be made or broken, there's is somewhere in the middle. Orders are quick and they also have the authentic Tastykake's from Philadelphia. Let me keep this short and simple. I haven't had a Philly cheesesteak before in my life, but based on the reviews on Yelp, I decided to make this the first place I would have one at, since I was visiting SF for the weekend. I didn't regret it. The sandwich melted in my mouth, it was excitingly spicy (Buffalo variation), and I've been craving another one ever since. Cheese fries, also as good as expected. Cheap, but only in price, as the place was clean, had some big TVs to keep you occupied, and very friendly staff. Don't be afraid if you don't see a lot of people in, my friend and I were the only patrons when we arrived at 6:30pm on a Sunday, but that didn't put us off, and I'm very glad it didn't.
