There was also no tendon in my bowl. - #39 Oxtail (5/5): Just pulls-off-the-bone good. So tender and juicy with plenty of cartilage. They also give quite a lot that we couldn't finish. The soup that it's in is different than the one they use for the pho so it's definitely worth a try, just know it's not going to come out with a lot of soup since it's mostly the meat that you want. Pretty underwhelming! 15mins and while waiting we were excited but quickly noticed so many taking photos, they were out of towners like us. Hubs got the pho and the broth lacked depth and flavor; totally watered down. Very disappointing. I got the rice plate and the meat was dryAF and the rice was not fresh whatsoever. Pho 79 has been very nostalgic to my family and I, growing up this was our go to Pho spot when we lived in Westminster. The restaurant seems to have remodeled and changed over the years. I haven't had it in years and the quality definitely has gone down. The broth was not flavorful, I could barely taste the beef flavor and spices. The noodles, meat, and vegetables were good and definitely carried. The pickled onions don't taste pickled, it tastes like regular onions. I got the Pho Dac Biet, which is kind of a mix of all of the offerings, like tripe, tendon, brisket and rare steak! It's clean inside at times but when it comes to a pho spot, no one pays attention to the ambiance. I got the traditional dac biet and it was good, broth was flavorful and wasn't overpowered with star anise. Clean and tasty broth before I defiled it with chili oil and veggies. The broth lacked flavor and was far too mild for my liking. I also wanted to add oxtail to my pho, but they were sold out, which was disappointing. To top it off, the small order of egg rolls for $9.25 is much pricier than other spots I've been to. We arrived early, and there was already a long line, but the service was very impersonal--just taking the order and payment, without much effort for anything else. I've heard for a while that this was one of the best, if not the best, pho spot in OC (which is saying a lot). I finally got a chance to try it and came around 6:30pm on a Friday night, which apparently was the perfect time as we waited barely 5-10 minutes and by the time we left around 7:30 there as a long line out front! For being as famous as it is, it's still a very low-key, traditional spot that's cash only and ran by your Viet aunties and uncles (which is how you know it'll be good). Service was good, everyone was kind and helpful and got us what we needed. Everything came out SO FAST, almost minutes after we'd just ordered, and the food was so fresh and piping hot. I ordered egg rolls and also the Pho đặc biệt with a side of meatballs and oxtails, oh and vinegar onions. It was truly one of the best pho I've ever had and instantly takes me back to eating pho in Vietnam. The prices were incredibly reasonable (like barely $50 total for 2 people), especially for the portion size, and I took home leftovers that was a full sized meals in itself! This place is, by far, the best pho place in town. It is possibly even the best pho place in the state of California. I've been here several times and their food is always consistent and good. I get the pho 79 special with the oxtail and it always hits the spot. There's a dedicated parking lot in the back and parking is free however it can get busy during lunch hours. This place is cash only so be prepared to pay in cash. When there is a long line, you put your name on a piece of paper and that is the waitlist. The line goes by relatively fast. Always a line on the weekends, but it moves fast as there is around 30 tables inside. There is a list to add your name to when you arrive. From the time I added my name on a Sat at 12noon to the time I got seated was around 20 mins. The pho comes out really fast, within 5 mins of ordering. Apparently they won a James Beard award in 2019, and it is good but it's not the best I've ever had. Nothing spectacular about the soup: it's good, but not memorable. The oxtail is really good and definitely worth ordering once there: it's very soft, fall off the bone, and has lots collagen. Beware that it is CASH ONLY and don't come if customer service is important to you. The workers didn't give us a menu when they sat us. They also just dump the pho at the table without telling us which is which. You will need to flag down a waiter for everything. I've heard about Pho 79 being one of the best pho in OC. After finding Phoholic broth too sweet, I decided to try Pho 79, and it did not disappoint! We arrived around 10:30 on a Saturday and waited around 20mins for our table. We ordered a large pho, grilled pork with broken rice, and fried spring rolls. I found the pho broth to be well balance just slightly too greasy for me but not a big issue at all! We weren't offered noodle option so I'm assuming there is only one noodle option? The fried spring rolls were decent but I think I've had better? This dish didn't really stand out too much, and I will not order again next time I visit. The grill pork with broken rice was pretty standard, tasted good but I think I'll try something else or stick with pho for my next visit. Paying for our meal was a bit confusing? I wasn't sure if they would bring check over to table, but seems like others would go up to counter and pay so I just did that. It is cash only which is a bit inconvenience but I came prepared! I convinced him to order the side of the oxtail based on what I read off of previous reviews. He was a bit confused because I'm not a big beef person but it was a really good decision. For about $5 something, fall apart oxtail with flavorful soup and its own fat? Chef's kiss! We were huge fans! The soups are flavorful, clean and not too overwhelmingly salty. S said that it shows that they add only a bit of msg to enhance the flavor, rather than to have it be entirely the flavor as some places do. Overall, a solid pho place in the OC. My friend brought me here because her husband's family will ALWAYS come here if they aren't making pho from scratch at home. Needless to say I was excited and luckily, we arrived at the perfect time during lunch. Once I put my name down, the wait list nearly tripled while I waited for my table. I only waited about 10 minutes and we were seated. There's a lot of tables inside and I saw a bunch of large parties seated so they will definitely accommodate it! I ordered #27 - rare beef, brisket and fatty beef. We also got an order of eggrolls to share. The eggrolls were great. Crispy exterior and moist inside. However, I found these a bit expensive. The eggroll appetizer comes with 3 eggrolls and is $9 which means it's $3 each. The pho broth is DELICIOUS. It's so rich in flavor and I nearly drank all of it which I usually don't do. The noodles were also a perfect texture, even after soaking up some of my soup because we were yapping away. I know I ordered fatty beef, but most my cuts of fatty beef were ONLY fat with no meat. We came on a Sunday afternoon so there was definitely a wait. Despite the somewhat long line in the clipboard, the wait wasn't unbearable. Also if you really want to know what the number on the restaurant stands for, definitely google it with Reddit. There was definitely a post that explained that the year 1979 was when the owner immigrated to US I believe. Don't quote me tho! After being seated, we were given menus and water. Ordered shortly and food came out very quickly. I think the broth was rich and not too salty for my liking. I felt like my medium bowl has a lot of noodles though! My husband's only complaint was that he felt like his large bowl was just more soup with the same amount of stuff I had in mine. Sorry folks. Not sure what all the hype is about. Could we have ordered the wrong things? Had the super bowl, cuz that seemed to be the closest to the classic No. 1 of all pho restaurants. The broth didn't have a smoky umami flavor that I've had at another pho restaurant in San Diego, so that's my standard of excellence now. The price here was fantastic tho but the bowl wasn't huge. We also had the egg rolls which were good but there weren't that many. The best thing we ordered was the oxtail. Okay, I'll give that possibly 4 stars. It was tender strips of meat and at first I thought it was brisket cuz I didn't see the tail bones but hubs and pal said they got the tail bones. I only had the meat. The place is a decent size and looks like hiring usual pho restaurant. The waitstaff keeps everyone moving without being rude cuz a line quickly forms. We got there around 5 on a Friday night and snagged one of the last tables but by the time we left there was a line outside. (We didn't loiter!).
