Wow, what an absolute gem! I'm so glad I made the drive to try this place. Honestly, I don't usually crave Vietnamese food because I've struggled to find any really great spots in LA--but this was absolutely worth it. The food here was so yummy, even thinking about it makes me want to go back. A quick heads-up: it's cash-only, and there's plenty of parking in the lot. The pho was incredible--so fragrant and light, yet warm and packed with flavour. The side of oxtail was the star for me--tender, juicy, and seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of salt. The pho broth itself was amazing, and adding jalapeños gave it the perfect spicy kick. The meatballs were also super tasty and tender. The dry noodle dish didn't disappoint either; the sauce was spot-on, and the chicken was packed with juicy flavour. And the spring rolls were perfectly fried and so crispy. I have a few items to share with you about this place. Congrats that you won a prestigious award! That's for your food and I'm glad that you were able to achieve such accolade. How about you set standards to maintain that honor in other categories? Cleanliness: I get it. It's an Asian mom/pop restaurant and historically speaking, cleanliness is never really an emphasis. But really, take a look at your bathroom and see what customers see. It's gross. Wouldn't hurt to schedule a cleaning session once in a blue moon. Invest in upgrading the dining experience. You'll be amaze what a clean dining area and bathroom can do to drive business. Service: I get it. Not a popular category for small operators either. But to walk your customers to the table, throws the 5 menus down like you just went all in on a poker hand, and walk away? You are not mic dropping for anything spectacular here. How about a smile? Or acknowledge your customers a bit. Family already hated your food even before trying it for the first time. Please train your staff on common etiquettes. This is a big opportunity to improve here! To the person that collects "Cash Only"... how about being courteous to customers questions about the bill? A bit of acknowledgement and explanation... hell.. even a smile, goes a long way. Food: Pho broth tasted ok actually. The bowls that it came out in is quite deceiving though. These types of bowls are narrow on the bottom which limits overall content. Noodles were soft, close to the point of broken upon touch. Also.. your peanut sauce needs improvement. Quite watery. Think quality might have hit the fan somewhere since you won the award. I would recommend you QC your product as it is your lifeline. Payment Options: It's the 21st Century. Provide options in terms of payments. I'm sure patrons would not mind paying an extra 50 cents for card options. But you know what, your store, your option. Final note: You don't deserve a 1 star because your food is edible, even though cleanliness is in question all around. If your bathrooms are in such conditions, can't imagine the kitchen... or how you handle the bowls and utensils. Two stars because you could have been better. You should have been better since you have a prestigious award under your belt. If asked, I don't recommend this place, nor will I visit them again. Amazing and NEED to go back again. The textures of the bowl, the depth of flavors, and the temperature were all perfect! This was actually my first time having a vermicelli bowl and I am so glad I had it here for the first time. The shrimp just melted in your mouth, the beef was soft but had a slight chew, and the egg rolls provided a perfect crunch. The pickled veggies added a freshness to every bite and the fish sauce meshed the whole bowl perfectly. If the looks intimidate you, you can think of this as a deconstructed egg roll! This place used to be famous for PHO. However, the quality and quantity of PHO have changed dramatically lately. They used a lot of MSG. The soup is less tasty and not hot enough, so it gets cold a few minutes later. My friends and I stopped by this place recently, and I ordered PHO TAI. Unfortunately, when I got home, my stomach was so upset, so I took medication to calm down. I found out the issue: I had eaten raw beef, and the soup was not hot enough, so things had happened. I called to complain the following day, and the owner answered. I told her my issue, but she didn't say sorry to comfort me. She also blamed me for eating something else, but her PHO, so it's my fault, and hung up on me. What the heck, and was she serious... One more thing, when I came to pay at the counter, she didn't mind looking at me but asked me for my table number and the amount I had to pay. She didn't even say "thank you" or "see you again." She seemed not to appreciate customers' support for her business but treated customers as if she were doing them a favor. She's so impolite, mean, and rude. One more thing, everyone should consider. Walked in and signed in on the check-in sheet. We waited only for a short bit before my name being called. We ordered the basics: egg rolls and pho. I got the one with rare beef while my friend got the dac biet (special). The broth was clean, but it was lacking a bit in flavor and spices. The egg rolls were good and the veggie portion was plentiful. This is an authentic Vietnamese pho joint so expect the service to be average. The wait staff are not attentive so be sure to order everything at once and order quickly. They accept credit card. It's a good bowl of pho, but seems a bit overhyped. Great spot for authentic pho. Really fair when it comes to pricing and the sizes of each bowl S M L. I was able to order half rare beef with meat balls within an additional charge. They do sell other traditional meat and vermicelli dishes as well. Their egg rolls are super crispy and fresh. Service was great and felt like staff was always attentive. Even though it gets pretty packed, the turn around is fairly quick. I was able to seat 8 people within 15 minutes on a Saturday. At first I didn't see the big deal for about this place, however once I took a bite of the egg roll wrapped in fresh lettuce and herbs and dipped in a sweet sauce, I was in heaven. Every bite was a treat! The broth for the pho is clean and fresh tasting. The herbs on the side are of quality I have never received any other pho restaurant. I felt bad not using them all. The service is pretty casual. They take your order & bring your food but no extra frill which we were ok with cause we were in & out. My usual order is TAI BO VIEN, which is rare beef with meatballs. They didn't have that combination as an option & I didn't feel like paying extra for the meatball so I just got the pho tai. Boyfriend got the DAC BIET, which comes with everything with tendon, tripe, beef, etc. The broth was very rich & flavorful as you can see by the pools of oil on top but it didn't really stand out for me. Make sure to hang around the parking lot to hear when they call you. They have a parking lot but it does get packed. It took them about 30 mins to sit. This place is worn down. Make sure to bring cash with you. They took about like 15 mins to bring the food. I got the Pho tai chin which is rare well cooked beef. The broth is pretty light. I haven't had rare beef in pho before but the broth does cook it. The pho is pretty average price. I would take your out of tower friends here. read more

The quintessential bowl of pho comes from this place. Everyone has agreed upon this. Zagat Guide. Michelin Guide. The publications. Why do all the pho places in Little Saigon have numbers in their names? Maybe the number is the year the owner arrived in the States. The pho dac biet at 79 is a better bowl of pho than you'll find at most places. Why? The broth is just that much richer of beef and more nuanced in its seasoning of cinnamon and star anise. What else is great about it? All the meats are perfectly cooked. Typically, at lesser places, the tripe still has a rubbery bounce and the brisket is overcooked with that pencil shaving texture. Not the case at 79. Brisket is yet unctuous and omasum tripe is nearly spoon tender. Carpaccio and tendon are also on point. So, 1979 was a good year. To it we owe our nations best bowl of pho, Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, and Ronald Reagan's first Presidential bid. read more

Hands down the best pho I've ever had. Broth and noodles are fresh and clean with healthy portions of good cuts of meat as well. It's no surprise they've received a Michelin Star. We've been visiting here for years and it's always mind blowing good. No other pho comes close. If you like oxtail, they have an oxtail side with your pho that is really good.
