It's a James Beard Award restaurant for a reason. My go-to order items are the egg rolls and the pho dac biet. The egg roll is perfectly crunchy and the filling is extremely flavorful. One sip of the pho broth and you're transported to a magical place. So much flavor yet so balanced.
Food okay. Service great. Cleaner than most pho restaurants nearby. Been here before and brought my girlfriend for her first visit. Not the biggest fan of the small, tight parking lot, but we got lucky and found a spot pretty quickly. We also managed to beat the lunch rush, since the line started stacking up right after we sat down. She ordered the Pho Tai and I got the Pho Dac Biet. For me, the broth is EVERYTHING, and while it was good, I have definitely had better. Overall, it is a solid spot, maybe a bit overhyped, but still worth trying at least once.
The best pho in OC hands down. Came in Sunday afternoon for lunch, lots of parking but busy! Be prepared for parking and maybe to wait. Put your name on the list hanging outside the door and they will call you when ready! We were sat almost immediately though. Inside is a large scale mom and pop shop that is FILLED with people and workers. We ordered a medium and large #23 pho and 2 waters, we got everything not even 5 minutes later. When I tell you this is the BEST broth I've ever had, it blew me away. I'm not one to usually order extra noodles but for this place I would order as many noodles until I ran out of broth, it is that good. Noodles were on the soggier side, I'm not picky about noodles but if you are then this is something to consider. Portions were huge for the price, very happy with that. CASH ONLY. I didn't see an ATM there but I'm sure they had one. Will always recommend and they have a new customer for whenever I'm in OC.
I've always heard great things about Pho 79, and overall the experience was solid, but with one disappointing miss. The pho itself was really good. The broth had great depth of flavor, and the noodles were cooked perfectly, exactly what you want in a comforting bowl of pho. However, the oxtail I ordered didn't live up to the same standard. It tasted like it had been sitting for a while, dry, overcooked, and a bit mushy instead of tender and rich like you'd expect. It definitely took away from what could've been a great meal. I'd still come back for the pho, but I'd probably skip the oxtail next time.
Parking: Small parking lot that was completely packed. You might need to wait for a parking spot while waiting for a table (WRITE YOUR NAME DOWN ON THE CLIP BOARD). Interior: Large inside with plenty of seating. Not that clean with sticky floors and tables. Workers are fast to for service as there is wait but it is a bit run down inside. Wait Time: 1-20min wait in line depending on group size and table available. Food comes quick ~10min or less. Items Order: 8/10 Pho Xe Lua $18.25 - LARGE BOWL by default as it is a combination of meats. Portion for protein is mid but items were cooked well. Noodle portion was quite large and I suggest ordering more meat on the side (usually order the OXTAIL ON THE SIDE but they ran out - go for lunch if you want to guarantee getting this). Noodles were also cooked al dente. Broth was flavorful but still average. 10/10 Cha Gio $9.75 - AMAZING but super small portion with only x3 pc. Their nuoc mam for this was very good!
They are moving!! Coincidentally came here for a take home order and found they are moving next week! After 44 years in the location and I am always a big fans in the last 15 years.
Pho 79 has the best pho in OC. The broth is absolutely incredible. It's a no frills restaurant that's CASH ONLY. There's a decent sized parking lot in the back, so I've never had trouble finding parking. The service is fast and efficient. They typically have your pho on the table for you within 5 minutes of ordering. I also love that they have 3 sizes of pho to choose from. I don't think it's advertised on the menu, but if you don't feel like having the thin vermicelli noodles, you can opt for the flat rice noodles instead. My go-to pho spot pho ever!
1. This spot is know for pho, but I always get the crispy chicken dish! This is only place I know that sells crispy dish with garlic butter sauce! 2. The spot has chill casual vibes! Super quick service and the broth was amazing. It's a small parking lot so good luck, and this place is cash only. This place is big enough to accommodate parties of ten and there's plenty of small tables. I wasn't impressed with the egg rolls. Overall, the pho was good!!!
There is a reason Pho 79 is a James Beard Award winner. The pho broth is incredibly flavorful, and they give you a really generous portion of brisket. You also can't go wrong with the egg rolls and the shrimp and pork spring rolls are absolutely worth ordering. Just keep in mind that it is a cash-only spot. The parking lot is pretty small, but you can easily find parking on the street if it's full. The 3 times I've been here the service is quick and friendly. A must-visit spot in Garden Grove!
Definitely still holds up to the award status these days! Stopped in on a busy, rainy saturday afternoon and had an overall good experience at what is now personal high ranking favorite pho restaurant. Food (4.5/5) - I really enjoy the broth the most here. You really taste the depth of the seasonings, the broth is so clear and light but flavorful with no usual overt "beefiness" or "sweetness" just right. The meat in the combo bowl i ordered was tender but a bit flavorless, even the fatty pieces. Veggies fresh as ever, just wish it had a bit more onion. No chili oil just sriracha and hoisin on the table (maybe i needed to request it?) Definitely worth the price, and optimal they have S/M/L sizing options. Service (4.5/5) got seated pretty fast starting 15th on a paper only waitlist, got our food pretty fast in a full restaurant, did have to wait a good while for to go containers but we were enjoying conversation regardless. however i do follow the common concern that being a cash only establishment can be a bit of a bother to most, especially if many people are waiting to pay. ambiance (4/5) nothing above and beyond, very staple OC viet restaurant in terms of location, decor, overall vibe. Simple table setups, notable flexed wall of many various well earned awardand recognitions is a nice unique touch. Clean for how much traffic it sees, parking was a nightmare here, however. Would absolutely go back!
This place is always busy, however the line usually moves pretty fast. Btw , it's CASH ONLY. I ordered the #107- crispy chicken with garlic butter sauce over rice and really enjoyed it. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. The portion was generous and everything tasted fresh. Service was quick and friendly. I'd definitely come back.
I ordered the ground crab with tomatoes soup base. And it's legit! Adding the shrimp paste made it even tastier. The fried tofu was fresh. Ice coffee also excellent. Taste strong! Fried spring roll uses rice paper. Authentic. Service is great. The red bean drink was a little disappointed because the beans were overcooked, so it's very thick. I prefer beans to give some texture.
This is probably the best Pho I've had in SoCal so far. I ordered the Pho with rare beef, brisket and tendon. I really loved how the beef was rare and gently cooked in the broth. The brisket was tasty and the tendon provided nice texture. The broth was light, but had enough salt. It had nice aroma and tasted meaty. The fresh herbs worked really well with the broth. I usually enjoy eating Pho with sriracha and chili paste, but this Pho didn't really need it, because everything was so good. I was a little confused on where to enter, but I did see people gather around the first door. You put your name on a list and they will seat you. I was fortunate to be seated quickly. They also took my order quick and served my food quickly. After I finished my meal, I gave my ticket to the cashier and paid. A little old school, but fine. This place advertised that it got a James Beard award, so I was really excited to try it out. We got seated right away on a Sunday afternoon which was great. I got the Pho with Raw Beef and Brisket. Pho with Raw Beef and Brisket - My first thought when I tasted the broth was that it felt watered down. It was disappointing because I was ready for a meaty broth with lots of depth to it, but it felt like it was one dimensional. I also got the largest bowl and didn't feel like the portions were very large. It was mostly broth. On the bright side, they gave a lot of meat. Most places skimp out, but they didn't! Overall, this was a very afforable meal and had lots of protein. I don't know if I would come back, especially with other delicious pho options around, but I am glad that I finally tried this place out for myself. read more
Unassuming, friendly and cash only, don't let this quaint pho restaurant fool you. We came around 8am on Sunday for breakfast and it was starting to get busy. The pho broth is flavorful and hearty, and they have all the correct Vietnamese herbal additions for your pho. The oxtail was tender and perfectly seasoned. The chicken was tender and juicy. The meatballs have cartilage but were enjoyable. Even the pho noodles bring their best game. It's easy to see why they have won so many accolades. Definitely a must if you're a pho fan in Orange County. read more
FYI, they had this sign up front. They are currently closed till March 11 for lunar new year. I went by and drove all the way here to try this place. Unfortunately I'm going to have to come back another time to see if it's worth the hype. Don't waste your time driving, come back after their break! read more
THE BEST PHO: This place is absolutely worth the 30-minute drive and cash-only policy! This is THE BEST pho I have ever had in my life. The broth is rich, complex, and perfectly balanced, something you can tell has been simmering for hours with care. The noodles have the perfect texture, and the meat is always fresh and tender. I've tried pho at dozens of restaurants, but now Pho 79 is the only place I'll go when I'm craving just pho. Trust me, once you try it, you'll understand why people willingly make the trek and stop at ATMs beforehand. 10/10, would recommend to anyone who appreciates authentic Vietnamese cuisine! read more

Delicious pho and egg and spring rolls!! There's a bit of a wait, but the line moves fast! Make sure to bring cash only also. The pho broth was so rich and flavorful while also not too heavy. I appreciate that there's three different size options to choose from with plenty of different protein options. My favorite was the egg rolls though! Fast service and delicious food -- Pho 79 really delivers! The broth was especially impressive: rich and flavorful without being overwhelmed by star anise, which I really appreciated. We ordered #23, #33, and #87, and each dish was excellent -- fresh, well-balanced, and satisfying. We also had the egg rolls, and they were a standout! Super crunchy on the outside, with a flavorful, well-seasoned filling that didn't feel greasy at all. Overall, a great experience. If you're craving authentic pho with quick service and standout sides, Pho 79 is definitely worth a visit. Go early and on weekdays. Lines can be long. They are closed on Tuesdays. Popular pho spot in Garden Grove. FYI - it's CASH only. With its long standing rep in the area and countless mentions and accolades, I want to say it's probably the gold standard to get pho in the area, especially if you're not from the area and are unfamiliar with the landscape. The place feels family owned and operated. There's more than pho on the menu, but it's pretty safe to say most who come here order pho. Because of its popularity, the place could get really busy and the lot really crowded, especially on the weekends. The space is a pretty good size and they run efficiently here, so the wait doesn't seem to get super long. Been here numerous times before, but on my most recent visit, I came solo looking for dinner on a Saturday night and it definitely hit the spot. There was a wait, so I put my name down on the list, but it really only took my like 5-10 minutes to get seated. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I ended up ordering a LARGE 23. PHỞ TÁI CHÍN (pho with both rare meat slices and well cooked brisket slices). I'm not a small person and I barely could finish it and that was me trying to finish everything even after I got full. The bowl was huge with generous amounts of meat. The accoutrements were fresh and plenty. Just a great place to scratch that pho itch. Always a pleasure to visit. read more

Came to Garden Grove before 10am and thought I was going to have a hard time finding things to eat. But a quick Yelp search and it seems the pho shop I've been meaning to try was opened! In fact, they opened at 7am! I guess it makes a lot of sense since pho was eaten as breakfast when I visited Vietnam. The great thing coming so early? No wait - I just walked right in and got helped right away. According to the staff, the most popular pho was the #33, the Special. Apparently, #32 is the same #33 but it is the medium sized version ($15) of the large ($18.25). After you decide on which pho, the only other questions to answer is whether or not you want raw sliced onions and bean sprouts (cooked or uncooked). I was intending to try the oxtail soup everyone's been raving about. However, I was told there is no oxtail soup till noon. The pho was great, definitely on top with the many places I've tried such as Pholic. The beef in the pho was not fatty, but it wasn't dry. The tripe had a good crunch. The tendon was not too chewy. There was a good balance between protein and veggie. The broth was nice and light. read more

This might be a controversial take, but I can't agree with those who claim this is the best pho in town. First off, the restaurant is cash-only, which is an inconvenience. If you forget to bring cash, there's an ATM on-site, but it charges a fee. Setting that aside, I didn't find the pho particularly impressive. I'm genuinely puzzled by the accolades this place has received: over 3,000 Yelp reviews, a James Beard nod in 2019, and a spot on the LA Times 100 list. Normally, I align with those kinds of recognitions, but this time, I think they missed the mark. I ordered the PHO TAI, and my partner had one of the vermicelli (Bún) dishes. The pho had the usual ingredients and garnishes, and while the portion was generous and filling, the flavor didn't wow me. I detected a hint of MSG magic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it didn't elevate the dish to greatness. I've heard that lines can get long depending on the time of day. We only waited about 10 minutes, which was nice. Still, with so many excellent pho spots in Westminster, it'll probably be a while before I return to give it another shot. read more
Pho 79 lives up to the hype and then some. It never misses and its easily some of the best pho in SoCal. The pho tái and the pho with brisket are both amazing; super flavorful broth and quality meat every time. You can taste the consistency and care in every bowl. The spring rolls are also a must-order- they're big, fresh, and really satisfying. This spot is always worth the visit. It's cash only, so don't forget to bring cash. read more
Best pho we've had. We could smell the broth from the entrance. Clean and naturally sweet, it was hard to waste a drop of this broth. The noodles, rare steak, tripe and tendons were perfect. We got the pho dac biet (special) ($15) and their special Pho 79 ($20). We also got the chau gio, which was not too oily and went so well with the fresh veggies and sesame leaves. Generous portions. Our #1 was Pho Ha Noi in San Jose, and this has topped it. The James Beard recognition was well-deserved. There is AC inside. By 10:30 am on a weekday, it was getting busy. Cash only ( not Venmo) hole in the wall Pho venue that 'a been here forever. Small parking , old style table setting and deco, sit down , order at table, and pay at the cashier establishment. Expect a waitlist at popular hours. You can call first to check and reserve the table. Pho came out very quick. Taste is consistent. Nothing really fancy but solid Pho. Price is nice with small bowl option for $13.5 , medium $15, large $18. Good portion/price ratio. Service is typical with traditional Viet food venue. Ice water came out quick too. Waited about 10 mins on a Saturday after signing my name on the clipboard near the door. I ordered the pho tai (M). It was delicious! The broth was flavorful and clear. It wasn't until towards the middle of the meal, we noticed we weren't offered water or anything to drink. Anyways, make sure to bring cash, they have signs at the front to mention that they're cash only. Also, you pay up front at the register. read more
Pho 79 is recognized for receiving the Michelin bib gourmand award for good quality and value cooking. They are cash only and were busy and packed at 8pm on a Monday but I was able to be seated right away. Service was quick and my pho came out within a few minutes. It was great, but to be honest it tasted like a basic pho you can get anywhere else. The ambiance is very casual with tables being close to one another and great for a quick bite. I would say you don't need to go out of your way to try the Pho here. read more
Came here on a Monday around noon and there was a long waitlist, but even so we got seated pretty quickly. PSA it's cash only here. I had pretty high expectations because they rave to be a Michelin acknowledged pho restaurant but unfortunately my whole party left very underwhelmed. The pho broth tasted basic and didn't have a strong / unique flavor, nothing to really make me want to come back. In my opinion Phoholic definitely has better flavor depth and prices. Inside had many cramped tables and a full house restaurant from the time we sat until we left. Parking lot was packed so we had to park across the street in the residential area. Overall service was ok, flavors were alright, and prices were high (for 2 pho and 1 bún came out to over $60 already before tip). read more

TLDR ^.^ The best pho I've had. Definitely try this place out, it's worth the wait. AMBIENCE & SERVICE I went at 4:30pm on a Wednesday, and there was no line. The owner was so kind. and stopped by our table to talk about how it was the perfect time to get seated. The service was quick and sweet, and the pho came out piping hot. The large is huge, it can feed 3 people. I would suggest getting a medium, if you're sharing with one other person. FOOD I got the #27. The broth was light, but rich in flavor. The fatty beef was falling apart. The rare beef was cooked all the way through. The tendon was delicious (my favorite) I wish there was more. I also got the fried spring roll appetizer. It came with a variety of fresh vegetables and pickled carrots. The spring roll tasted like a fried light egg roll. It tasted so good wrapped with all the fresh veggies and dipped into their fish sauce. read more

After a gloomy day at the disney parks, we were craving some soup. Quick google search and this place was the first to populate. When we pulled up, there was long wait. Put your name on the clipboard. Parking is a small lot. Cash only. I am not a pho expert and im probably the last person to give an opinion because it all tastes the same to me. I thought it tasted good, the crispy chicken with garlic sauce was tasty. Soup portions are huge so a small would do just fine. They were out of crispy spring rolls and it was only 1030AM. the bun thit was good as well. Would i go out of my way to come here again if in the area? Probably not. But we all enjoyed the food and left with full bellies. read more

This has been one of my favorite pho spots for years. Always very crowded especially on weekends and evenings so be prepared to wait in line. It's CASH ONLY so keep that in mind. There is a parking lot but it's not super big and can get chaotic as there's two entrances so people are driving in many directions. The broth is so delicious and they are very generous with the amount of meat. I ate meat in every bite and still ran out of noodles first! Well done brisket is usually my go to however here I really liked the rare beef (pho tai). We didn't get oxtail as we came for brunch and they were sold out. They make a fresh batch of oxtail at noon every day so come after noon if you want oxtail guaranteed or call ahead to ask! read more
With so many delicious looking pho restaurants scattered throughout Garden Grove and Westminster, there's absolutely no shortage of places that piqued our interest. However, despite how some of those spots stood out more than others, we knew well in advance we were going to be heading to Pho 79. Not only did I hear nothing but great things about them from numerous friends, but their reviews on Yelp are so overwhelmingly positive! Which, in an unfortunate twist of fate, might have contributed to our rather underwhelming experience... Having heard ahead of time about how popular and beloved Pho 79 is, we actually made a point to come here in the middle of the afternoon to avoid any sorts of crowds or problems trying to snag a parking spot in their lot. However, I was surprised to see that even at 2:30pm, just about every table in here still had customers! What's more, we saw so many different dishes on the way to ours - most folks had ordered pho (obviously), but we also saw plenty of vermicelli bowls, rice plates, pho ga, and, of course, lots of their imperial rolls/fresh spring rolls. -- (#7) NEM CUON - Rice Paper Rolls with Grilled Pork I wish we had gotten the Nem Nuong Roll instead of this one, but this wasn't bad. While the rolls were plump and fresh, the ratio of the iceberg lettuce and to pork was skewed. What's more, I wish the latter had been a bit meatier and juicier, though it still tasted pretty decent. -- (#24) PHO TAI NAM GAN - Rice Noodle Soup with Rare Beef, Well Cooked Beef, and Tendon This was perfectly fine, but that was also the problem - I was expecting (hoping?) to be amazed! The noodles were good and there was a fair amount of meat, but the broth didn't taste very dynamic. For me, I thought it was a little one note and didn't have much body to it. -- (#92) BUN CHA - Pork Patty and Charbroiled Pork with Rice Vermicelli Not as good as my favorite in the Bay Area, but this was actually pretty decent. The charbroiled pork was moist and I liked how the patties had green onion mixed in (along with the onions and fried garlic on top), but the overall portion of meat felt a little light. Much like with so many other Vietnamese restaurants, I loved how everything moved so swiftly and efficiently here. They do a great job of managing the wait list (we had to wait about 5-10 mins) and turning over tables while the kitchen gets dishes out within just a matter of minutes from when you order. Given that, as well as how much folks seem to love this place, I can't help but wonder what we seemed to miss out on. I do think we probably should have tried a different roll (Nem Nuong Roll) as well as a different pho dish (the Super Bowl!), but I can't imagine the latter would've made a huge difference. Either way, I'd be open to returning to Pho 79 to find out and/or to get the right things, even though it'll be hard to pass up trying one of the many other spots nearby! read more

Pho 79 absolutely lives up to the hype!!! I know this place has tons of great reviews, and honestly, they deserve every single one. We started with the egg rolls and I have no idea what they put in them, but they were ridiculously good. We had to order a second round because we couldn't stop eating them. We both got the pho dac biet and it was honestly incredible. The broth was rich, the portion was super generous, and for the price, it felt like such a good deal. I'm still thinking about the Pho!!!! Like genuinely. I've told multiple people about this place since and couldn't recommend it more. There was a bit of a wait, because we went at peak lunchtime so it was pretty busy. We waited around 40 minutes, but honestly, it was worth the wait. read more
I was pretty excited to finally try Pho79 until I viewed some of the photos on Yelp. In some photos, the broth looked ok and some didn't look good. I was hesitant to go, but decided to still give it a try. I put my name on the list. There were at least 7 other names before mine. To my surprise, it went by pretty quick. Got seated and looked at the menu. There were 3 different sizes for pho: Small $12 something, Medium was around $15, and large was close to $18. The prices ain't bad at all. After placing the order, everything went down hill. First off..I am not sure how they mixed up the order. It was pretty simple. The waiter even confirmed it. 2nd, the broth was not hot enough. 3rd, the broth had little to no bone flavor. It tasted more like pure pho msg and was pretty salty. One of the bowls supposedly have bo vien, but they forgot to put it. When told the waiter, 1 piece of bo vien sliced in half was brought out lol wth?? The egg rolls were great. I would go back for the egg rolls, but not the pho. However, I don't think I will return. I need a more stronger and authentic pho. The line got longer and longer as time goes by. Go early lol Parking was ok. Always full, but it was in and out. So if you wait patiently, you will get a spot. read more
Restaurant is clean. It took a while for them to take our order but they were fast. We ordered the pork and shrimp spring rolls, eggrolls, and pho dac biet. The pho was on the bland side and didn't have much flavor. Definitely disappointed since they had such good ratings. The spring rolls were good and solid. The eggrolls were burnt but still good and loved all the veggies that came with it. Recommend for the sides but not so much for the pho broth. read more

Only order a medium because a large is very large ... the broth is good but I do prefer thicker cut noodles. They also have good coffee and tea. My Thai tea was really good. read more

I get why they have a Michelin star. The hype is real! The pho broth is beefy, full of flavor and doesn't leave you feeling thirsty. They don't skimp on their meats in the bowls. My only complaint is they don't give much noodles in their pho bowls, so I just get a large now. Service is quick and food comes out fairly quickly. They are always busy. The restaurant was packed with people waiting for their tables on a Monday at 9am. Parking can be difficult if the restaurant is packed. Cash only! The bar has been set and pho 79 is now my favorite place to get pho! read more

From what I found out that this place is a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation for good quality and value. So we decided to swing by and noticed the line is wrapped around the corner so we ended up ordering to go instead . It turned out to be amazingly good and They gave us tons of meat and noodles . Worth every Pennies and don't have to wait by ordering to go if you don't like to stand and wait . read more
We came past noon on a Saturday and waited around 30 mins for our party of 4 to be seated. I ordered a small pho tai chin and it was delicious, comforting and came with lots of meat. It's cool that there were 3 different sizes for pho and the small was filling enough for me for lunch. I also had egg rolls and they were good and crispy but pricey for only 3 full egg rolls. A solid spot for pho but I wouldn't say it's amazingly better than other places I've had. The parking lot is pretty big but always busy so can be difficult. read more

Cash-only pho restaurant! We waited about 30 minutes for a Saturday lunch when we arrived a bit past noon. I had the Small pho tai chin and egg rolls which were both delicious. Not sure but this location is permanently closed.

I believe so. It's where the flavor is... however it's not that strong.
Are they on food delivery apps?
No they are not. Reminder the restaurant is cash only!
Do you serve any alcohol?
Negative...just water, soft drinks in a can and other Vietnamese drinks.

This palce has been our go to for years. Did they cut back on portions? Last two times, less meat AND noodles. Stil hungry after ordering the Super 79 bowl?

You'd be hard pressed to find something vegetarian here.
Do you take reservations?
No. First come first served. They have a sign in wait list. Worth the wait every time.
Are the regular thin noodles fresh noodles also or is it just the fat wide noodles that are fresh?
They are all fresh.
If I order pho, can I take out the noodles and replace them with lettuce/veggies? I'm on low carb lifestyle.
Not sure. But you could ask. Maybe just order soup?

They are porcelain/ceramic!
What time did they serve oxtail? Whenever I call and ask, they said they run out.
