I had to ask for 4 total just to make it a normal portion size. I understand times are tough, but how much are you really saving on ginger, green onions, and oil vs risking losing customers? This place is delicious! I've been coming here since I moved to SF two years ago. I think I went right after they reopened following the covid shutdowns. The owners were so gracious and thanked us profusely for coming in. The food was also delicious. Giant portions and great flavor of 5 spice chicken pho and imperial roles. We were looking forward to try this place for takeout after I saw the 4 star rating. We were very disappointed and will definitely not be back. We ordered: Bun bo hue (spicy beef combination noodle soup) - very small portion. The soup definitely did not have the flavor of a soup that had been simmering overnight or even hours. The beef brisket was very very dry. Every other place I have ordered this dish to go, the beef brisket comes raw and you drop it in the hot soup right before you eat at home if taking yo go. You do not overcook it before the person comes to pick up their order. Very disappointing. Garlic noodles with beef - we could barely taste any garlic in the noodles and the beef was over cooked. I love this spot -- I typically like ordering take-out from here whenever I'm craving a nice bowl of soup! They have a variety of options for you to pick from and they're very accommodating if you want to switch or take out an item. I normally order the Pho Ga (comes with scallion-ginger sauce) and Bun Rieu -- for the Bun Rieu, I ask to substitute the noodles for Lai Fun (same one as Bun Bo Hue) as I prefer those more. The broth is flavorful, rich and hearty. You can taste the effort they put into making their broths. The restaurant is easy to find (there's parking in front). They have really good service (through the phone) and the food is always ready when they say it is. I been coming here the last year and it was pure accident that I found this place. It's right by Ovaline oil changing place. I needed a quick oil change and it was late around 5:45pm. It was a cold evening and we decided to get noodle soup to keep ourselves warm so we decided to try this place. They were out of Pho noodle (flat rice noodle) which was odd since Pho Ga is their signature dish so they offered us with different types of noodle they have on hand. We ordered 4 bowls of Pho Ga and it was good, even better if it comes with the right noodle we want. However, they gave us a very small portion of bean sprouts so that was a bit surprising since they charge $13.50/bowl and could not give us more bean sprouts. Looking for something light in the Sunset, we found Pho Ga - which was absolutely perfect. I ordered the Satay Beef Noodle Soup, a huge delicious bowl of noodles and beef with basil and sprouts on the side. My partner ordered the Pork with Vermicelli and Imperial Roll. 4 star for the Bun Rieu (BR) + 1 star for how brave this BR is! To all BR LOVERs - this is so far the best I've ever had in a Viet restaurant. It's almost on par with my ex (whose parents are Chinese from Viet) mom's, except sweeter. With real crab meat, the softest of the egg and ratio of all the ingredients are just perfect (I've made it many times and def needs skill to make the mixture to the right doneness). I am only speaking for Viet. Restaurants in SF and EastBay. Not many of them are brave enough to spend time & resources to make a great bowl of RB, especially a dish that's prob at the bottom of the list even for Vietnamese (btw I am Cantonese and a huge Viet. Food lover). My own food chain goes to if BBH is good, the pho can't be so bad; but if BR is good, holy cow and you are gem and can I meet the chef? I am going to tell her/him that if I open a restaurant, we share the same philosophy that I don't care how much you hate shrimp paste, not enough, no good. Many of you know what I am talking about right? Using shrimp paste only makes the soup too sharp, the sweetness is SO clever to round it (easier for taste and I guess this maybe a regional preference? And since they are a pho ga restaurant, maybe the owner's form HaNoi or somewhere more north?) Do me a favor, if you like the BR too, let the waitress know, let the chef know, and hug the chef. If you are still here, now is for the BBH. So far still nothing beats Pho King in Oakland for me. Def. less lemongrassy and for some reasons, they let the pieces of lemongrass floating as part of the satay oil. But then the pieces are kind of big and some stuck to my teeth, why not strain them first? Then, there's no pork feet nor trotter in it so I would say BBH is average. In fact, another good BBH place is Wing Wah Pho Ga in Oakland. I like pho ga too but I was able to replicate it at home with about the same taste, this is why I always get non-pho ga dishes in PG restaurants. At the end, for the owner: - The fried spring roll is just too hard to bite on, not sure if this is because of the rice paper brand. Also the filling is too mushy. - The waitress who brought the noodle soups (1 each time), almost burn herself. These are piping hot dishes usually with hot soup filled to the top of the bowl. This is one of the better Vietnamese noodle place in the area. As we first walked in, there was only one lady inside. More people came in for dinner during our dining experience which was a good sign. I have to say that the portion was generous, especially the garlic noodle dish with 5 spices chicken. I'm so sad every time I leave SF for the weekend to go back to Fremont, because there's just no good pho ga places there. Not on this level at least. This place is 5 minutes of a walk from where my girlfriend lives. She's starting to make fun of me because I order from here every day for lunch, but the funny thing is, when I bring it back, she always manages to sneak a few bites in.
