To top this off, the sausage and mushroom gravy is flavorful and makes me want to dip biscuits in it all day long. They do not charge extra for getting both types of gravy on your biscuit - so try both! Don't pass on the Hash Ups! I highly recommend getting this and ordering it extra crispy. Pine State Biscuits was one of the best meals I had in Portland. It's highly rated for a reason! My friends and I wanted to get it for breakfast but when we arrived, there was a long line out the door for take out and no seats available for dining in either. We were planning to order take out anyway so we decided to check online to see if it would be faster. They provide an estimated time to pick up and at 10AM, we were told to pick up at 1PM! Since it was definitely a spot I wanted to try, we decided to put our orders in anyway and killed some time downtown before coming back to get our biscuits. Even when we came back at 1PM, it wasn't ready for another ~15 mins. All of us got The Reggie ($12) except for one who got The Club but we all enjoyed it regardless. The Reggie comes with fried chicken, cheese, bacon, and your choice of mushroom or sausage (or both) gravy. I got both gravy but the mushroom one was overpowered by the sausage gravy, still delicious though. The biscuits were perfectly done, crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside. The fried chicken was also fried perfectly and the bacon was very crispy too. It was delicious! We also got the Hash Ups, basically a loaded hash browns dish, and a side of collards. This was the best breakfast/brunch I've had in ages. I've gotten Pine State biscuits through delivery before, but I had never been in person. I can't wait to come back. My friend and I stopped in after massage appointments and ordered a bunch of food to share. Everything was delicious- there were no disappointments. The true standouts were the chicken pot pie and the blueberry cornmeal pancakes. The chicken pot pie had a thick pastry crust, was extremely flavorful, and somehow the vegetables weren't soggy. This is some impressive alchemy. We ordered just one blueberry cornmeal pancake, and it was truly huge. It had only the natural sweetness of the fruit and corn but was served with butter and maple syrup which was excellent. It was a bit runny inside so maybe it was technically underdone, but I loved it. The biscuits and gravy were delicious as expected, but I actually enjoyed the shrimp and grits more. With their homemade hot sauce, this was the best shrimp and grits I've had in Portland. At this location they had a nice semi-outdoor seating area with heating, which was perfect for the weather when we went. If there was be restaurant I'd recommend to a visitor that captures the local cuisine it would be Pine State Biscuits. An upgrade from the hardtack staple of early emigrants on the Oregon Trail, biscuits are the ultimate comfort food of the Pacific Northwest. Pine State does the biscuit justice. Perfect bake, crispy exterior, yet soft interior. I do wish the biscuit was a bit more flaky. Fried chicken connoisseurs should steer clear of the basic, overcooked fried chicken. Sausage gravy is a bit thick but perfectly flavored. The collard greens are quite tasty if you are looking for a something that is bit more on the healthier side. Coffee is decent. Service on the weekends is hit or miss as this place can get quite busy. Best chances for better service are on weekdays. My recommendation is sticking to eggs, veggies and/or bacon on a biscuit. We've been Pine State customers since the early days on Belmont, and it's probably the place that I crave most often, but tend to avoid just for self preservation. But it's pointless to live in Portland and not treat yourself occasionally. I have no specific recommendations - just because everything is terrific. Order whatever sounds good to you, and you won't be disappointed. A word of caution for the Division location - the infamous train tracks that cause ridiculous traffic delays are just behind the Pine State building. I really wanted to like this place. I ordered a biscuit with fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, and ranch dressing, as well as hash browns, and a mimosa. The biscuit sandwich is so large it requires a fork. When I began cutting into mine, the biscuit began to crumble and fall apart, and all of the breading on the fried Chicken came off with it. Since it just fell apart, I took the biscuit off the top, and noticed that the fried green tomatoes were literally just batter, there was no tomato left inside. I ate part of it, but it really just turned into a soft, disintegrated mess covered in ranch dressing. The hash browns were good, but the mimosa was really bad, mostly orange juice, with cheap prosecco. All of that being said, my partner and son both really liked their biscuit sandwiches, and theirs did not fall apart like mine. Since I am vegan, the only option was the hash up. You can be creative and add in extra toppings including collard greens and vegan sausage. I have to admit that I am one of those Portlanders who has never been to Pine State. Granted, the normally long wait times and extensive queuing has always intimidated me. But, the heatwave made for minimal lines and quick service recently. We were lucky to arrive with only two groups ahead of us in the earlier morning hours on a weekend. The shaded interior corridor where the queue forms was nice, considering 100ºF temperatures were a few moments away in the sun. Once near the ordering counter, menus were abundant, and specials are laid out well for any reader. The service at the counter is swift, fun, and the staff will be able to curate your experience for you. I went with the veggie biscuit, since I had plenty of animal protein in the days leading up to dining here. The staff will also plan where you'll sit, keeping the space organized. For folks who attempt to get a table before ordering - that is not the vibe here - be patient and you will be seated. The food arrives quickly, and boy is it ever tasty. I'd recommend stocking up on your silverware, hot sauces, and water while you wait, since silverware is sure to run out a few times. Considering the healthy amount of sauce that will arrive on your biscuit, eating with a fork and a knife is inevitable during your experience, too. The menu has plenty to offer, so you should absolutely return. The restrooms are clean and easy to access. Pine State Biscuits is a Portland institution if anything -- and that being said, it's a great one. I have been to this and other locations and am always pleased with how delicious everything is. Being a leaf eater, I thoroughly appreciate that they have mushroom based gravy for the vegetarians and even vegan options for those who don't eat dairy. It's even better that these plantbased options are DELICIOUS and not just boring/bland/cardboard substitutes. Other things to note are: coffee (Coava reg or decaf) is self-serve and the British Breakfast or Peppermint Tea is by Smith Tea. Both brands are Portland local and worth imbibing. And PSB kindly asks you to bus your table. I can do that. Now that I've had a McIsley, I now know what all the fuss is about as the biscuits are wonderful and the fried chicken is not dry nor is it overly breaded--this is important to me.
