Stuff here is so cheap. I bought a pretty big slice of tres leches for $4.00. Compared to 85 degrees, where you get a cake 1/2 the size for the same price. They have so many things here: conchas, sheet cakes, tortillas, American-style donuts, and lots of other pan dulces. The people here are so friendly and positive. The only downside is that it's cash only, but honestly, not a big deal. The cake is really fluffy, moist, but a bit too sweet for my liking. I'm really glad I found this place and will be back for pan dulces. The decor on the cake is also really aesthetic :) read more

I love tres leches cake. LOVE IT! The reason that I love it so much is because there's no way that it can ever be dry since there are three types of milk (evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and regular milk). I've tried the ones from Safeway (they do a decent job), and the one at El Gallo Giro, but the one from Pink Elephant is by far one of the best ones that I've had. The location is right on King Road, so watch out for traffic on a Friday night. A 10" round set me back $22 which isn't all that bad. They have mounds and mounds of pan all over the place; enough to cause a diabetic to go into shock by just walking in the store. Try this place for some of the best pasteles in the area! CASH ONLY! My brother ordered my mother a white cake with yellow flowers for her birthday. She received a days old stale spice/almond cake which had been originally iced with tan icing that had been covered over with yellow icing and no yellow flowers. Ok so Pink E is still bomb tasting, esp after the amazing tres leches experience we had this wkd that was much better than the one I had last time. I am not a fan of TL but this one was not oversaturated so you could taste layers of cake, milk and fruit which is the way it should be. But I digress. As a longtime fan of pan dulce, I found this place and was initially excited. However, my excitement would soon turn to horror. When I walked in I immediately noticed a fly in the display case landing directly on the bread and no one seemed to be too concerned about it. THANK YOU PINK ELEPHANT BAKERY!!! My daughter just celebrated her 2nd birthday and her cake was a huge hit. Things I loved: 1) I was able to place my order and pay for it online- super convenient. 2) Part of the ordering process was the option to add an inspiration picture- they took our theme and that picture and created a masterpiece. 3) We got the strawberry cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream frosting. The cake was fresh, the strawberries were perfect and the whipped cream frosting was sweet without tasting like pure sugar. 4) The cake decorations were amazing. There was a 3-D barn on top, that to our amazement was actually also made of cake! We will definitely order cakes from this bakery again in the future, and based on how many guests asked where we got our cake, I am guessing they will have patrons soon. read more

I heart this bakery. The tres leches cake is AMAZING..both the mocha and the strawberry are good (mocha is very subtle). They also have an amazing sweet potato empanada that you should DEFINITELY try, better than any sweet potato pie I've had. The cream cheese pastry is also very good. You can't really go wrong here, but definitely get a piece of the cake...it's better than most fancy cakes I've had at bakeries around the city and south bay....and it's CHEAP to boot^_^. Being across from one of my favorite eateries, I had to try this place out. They make their baked goods daily and whenever I take a bite of whatever it is, it's ALWAYS soft and scrumptious! I got over eight baked goods that were a decent size and it all cost five bucks, really good pricing! Came here on cinco de mayo and picked up a couple of stuff, unfortunately I don't know what they are called exactly but I think one thing that I bought was called a conche...don't quote me on that. This place accepts cash only and accept other forms of payment such as food stamps, which is kind of a hassle for those who only carry plastic. They also have all kinds of cute cupcakes with disney and sesame street designs. As for customer service, the ladies were very nice and helpful. Next time I go in, I will make sure to ask what it is I'm getting instead of just pointing and saying "I want this" and "I want that." read more

Last night, for some reason I ran into a picture of Burned Almond Cake, one of my favorites. I tried it from Peter's Bakery long long ago and I was dying to go there today to get a slice of that heaven. And after reaching the bakery at 6.20pm, I realized that the bakery closes at 6pm. Bummer. I would gripe about it the whole day. So, I used Yelp to look for other bakeries nearby and found Pink Elephant. There is a little parking space just behind the bakery and when we opened the door..... oooohhhh.... flamboyant and they looked alluring. A few cake samples were available as well. So, my husband got a mocha tres leches (there are other flavors too) and I got a.... thinking.... thinking.... uho.. no.. don't remember... It was placed next to the tres leches; prepared with layers of phyllo with cream in between, topped with white cream and a little cherry on the top. The lady was very very helpful. I used to get my empanadas at Su Vianda, the supermarket in downtown San Jose that closed down because of labor strikes. Following its closure, there was a triangle shaped hole in my life that should have been filled with custard-induced happiness. I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a shot because my parents farm a small piece of land right around the corner (don't ask). The store itself is very spacious but the first thing that demands your attention is the four glass counters filled with assorted pan dulce. I may have left a puddle of drool on the threshold. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste - I kinda zeroed in on the empanadas. They had a huge selection of different fillings, including strawberry, pineapple, custard, and...GUAVA. The empanadas were all great but my favorite is still the custard. The guava empanada has real, pink guava in it, but I am a lazy bastard and the seeds inside just piss me off. I also tried some of the other pastries and I must say, they were all good. Definitely calls for some more exploration here. 1/1 Stars for Value - Most of the pastries are less than $1. I think the empanadas are around 80 cents...I don't know. I usually just point at a bunch and throw my money at them. I usually get around 7-8 pastries and end up paying around $5. 1/1 Stars for Customer Service - I'm Asian and I know next to nothing about pan dulce so there was a lot of "What's in this? Are these different flavors or is that just coloring?" The ladies behind the counter were very helpful and patiently followed me around the glass counters to describe all the goods. Great service. The lady behind the counter was very patient and took the time to explain to a Mexican bread newbie like me all the different baked goodies. Great price. I got the bread pudding and a guava empanada both for 75 cents each. Bread: The bread pudding was hearty and delicious. It probably weighed over half a pound and was densely packed with cinnamon, raisins, bread, and I'm sure butter or some kind of fat. One of these will definitely fuel you for a long time. The empanada was not as great. The skin was bland and dry. I liked that they use fresh guava, but they could have taken the seeds out because they were very hard and intrusive. I think this is the best Mexican bakery I've been too! I use to go to the one right next to Arbuckle elementary school I forgot what it's called but it was pretty ghetto n dirty there. Over here it's nice and has a lot of options. So I usually like eating the sprinkle cookies. But I tried the regular tres leches cake, it's huge and it has strawberry jam in the middle. Super good. I hadn't purchased anything here before but needed a place that could accommodate my specific needs. We are pregnant with our first baby and wanted the most perfect cake without braking the bank for our gender revealing party. We gave them a few inspiration pictures and two days notice. We were so impressed with how well they put our ideas together without fondant! They said that they had only made a couple of these in the past but they were very open to our ideas. I think we bought a copious amount of pastries yesterday and some jello (I love their jello) and spent less than $10. I also really like their soft pastry with cream cheese. So on point. I think they specialized in making big cakes but I just came and I got a cupcake ($1.40 sweet). The cupcake was soft, creamy, and didn't taste too sugary. This is the second Mexican bakery I have visited. Let me say the arroz con leche here is good. They only serve it in the morning,during the afternoon i'm pretty sure they use the left over arroz con leche from the morning and refrigerate it put it in cups and sell it as rice pudding. Delicious both ways. The conchas here are alright. I ate conchas at El Pan Dulce and they were WAY BETTER! Very good service. I really like the arroz con leche here but I had better mexican pastries else where. I will be coming back one day to try the tres leche cake and to get more of that arroz con leche. read more

Last week, I offered to buy a cake for my friend's birthday at the last minute. She told me that it should feed about 15-20 people, and that she wanted something either lemon or strawberry flavored. I thought of a tres leches cake, and found Pink Elephant on Yelp. I'd passed by it a few times and had never gone inside, but decided to give it a shot. Firstly, the bakery is quite big. There are pastries and various baked goods behind giant glass cases along 3 of the walls. Secondly, there were a LOT of things to choose from. So many colorful and whimsical pastries put me in a good mood :) Thirdly, it is very, very affordable. I bought a slice of tres leches (HUGE portion) with strawberry and a sweet potato turnover (empanada) for $2.50. Are you kidding me?! I pay more for a cup of coffee at Starbucks! To put it bluntly: THE TRES LECHES WAS DA BOMB. It was so moist and tasty and light...I was worried it would be overly sweet but it wasn't. The only thing I didn't particularly like was the frosting, but then again, I'm not fond of artery clogging buttercream frosting to begin with and I just scraped it off. I decided to go with a tres leches sheet cake for the birthday. Ordering was a cinch. Behind the cases, they had some white cakes with flowers pre-made and I just pointed to one that I thought was pretty and told her to make it tres leches. She also complied with my request of light frosting, just a couple of flowers (no flower overkill please) and "Happy Birthday Marin" written across the cake. She said the cake would feed about 10-15 people, but I'd say it would feed 15 people easily. I got fresh sliced strawberries added for an extra $1.50. I came in and ordered this on a Thursday at 3PM, and she said it would be ready the next morning. I paid $10 first, and the remaining $19.50 the next morning. Wow that was easy. The cake was a hit though the frosting was still a bit much in my opinion. It lasted the car ride up to San Francisco just fine. Oh, and as far as the sweet potato empanada went...meh. I think I should've gotten something else. I found the empanada (outside part) very dry and the filling was just okay. It had some spice in it, I couldn't tell what...nutmeg maybe? In any case, I'd skip it and just get the tres leches. Cash and food stamps only. read more

I came here on Saturday morning on my way to my volunteering event, I was in charge of the pastry, so I had to looking for a place that opens early (7AM) and selections that appeal to masses without going over my pre-allocated budget. So Pink Elephant it is They have a great selection of cookies and morning pastries, service is super friendly, and the price is unbeatable. And watermelon cookies is a hit at my volunteering event. We ordered a two tier cake for my daughters sweet 16 spending $200. It looked beautiful when we picked it up and they told us to keep it in the trunk and it would be fine. I assumed that they would have wooden dowels to keep the top tier fixed to the bottom layer. By the time we reached the venue we opene the trunk to find that the top tier had slid off the bottom tier and had got completely ruined. There was a plastic plate between the two tiers and that's it. Nothing to hold the tiers together so it slipped right off!! Will never order a cake from here again. So dissappointed!! read more
