We went back the second night during our LA visit. As it was easy and on the way back home to mom's. This time we ordered the wild mushroom pizza, chopped salad, and the cavatappi pasta with mushrooms and chicken. Upon eating our meal, we discovered that the sauce for the cavatappi is the same as what's on the wild mushroom pizza. Is this a good thing?? Yes, it is as this sauce is delicious. You can probably put it on cardboard and it'll be great. The chopped salad reminded me that I need to make chopped salad at home. It's a perfect salad. For dessert, my son got soft serve Straus Family Creamery ice cream. Did you know that it's one of the only ice creams that's made in a nut free facility? There aren't very many real pizza options in LA and before I tried this place, I thought only Mozza did great pizza. Pitfire is my regular spot now, the prices are more reasonable than Mozza and no BS. I usually get the pepperoni pizza which is just great, and the crust is... Fabulous. By the way, their pasta is pretty damn good, too. I like their watermelon lemonade as well. I like the vibe here, but they have to change up their music. Great food, nice staff -- so why one star? Regrettably, because of the customers. This place is NOT kid friendly. S&W, Omelette Parlor, Roll & Rye -- kid friendly. They bring your kid crayons and a lidded cup with a straw. Pitfire is a total hellhole of unsupervised kids crawling not only all over the restaurant and under the feet of the poor staff, but also running out into the parking lot. I was there with my toddler, who is a perfectly normal 3 year old -- she cannot sit totally still and sometimes forgets to use an indoor voice, she bursts into tears because the straw is not bendy, whatever. I am not expecting kids to not be kids. But DAMN, you're the parents! They are in a restaurant, not a flipping jungle gym. I actually packed up our food half eaten because I was getting so anxious that one of the tiny kids would get run over in the parking lot and I didn't want to be there when it happened. It has to just be a matter of time. I feel so bad down-rating a place with such good food and nice staff but honestly, I will never go there again and feel like other parents who give a rat's ass about their kids should know what 'kid friendly' means here -- it means total chaos. It really takes a lot to make me mad esp when I am hungry I stay calm cause I know I am in the store already........... we walk in the first time ever and mind you both my wife and I have been raised in this area since the early 60"s .......... so you can see I have probably eaten everywhere with that said we walk in and no greeting not even a can I help you with 3 open registers ............ then I asked this African-American man if he was the manager and he said yes I start to tell him what had happened and he started to laugh ............... I am so sorry for your experience and would be more than happy to offer you a refund as a token of apology. Lack of care is not what we stand for at Pitfire and it is not acceptable for us to treat our guests this way. As well, it is absolutely not acceptable to have pests in our restaurants. As a regular guest at Pitfire I'm hopeful we can win back your faith in us." He also wrote: "Your experience plainly shows that we missed an opportunity to show care & concern for our guests. "Not caring" is definitely not what we stand for at Pitfire. I am so glad that your server acknowledged your dissatisfaction and stepped up in attempt to make things right for you. I will be seeking him out and praising him for his actions. As well, I'll be looking to the Manager on duty for some answers regarding the lack of concern surrounding your experience." My friends and I were there for lunch at 11:30 am, and as we were sitting there chatting, a roach ran down the wooden ledge between the window and our table, scurried onto our table about two inches away from my arm and five inches away from my chopped salad, and then disappeared down the crack between the table and the wall. AAAAAHHH!!!! We immediately flagged down our server who expressed how sorry he was and said that he'd talk to his manager and see about comping us some drinks to make up for the utter grossness of what had happened. He returned a few minutes later to say that he would not be able to offer us anything at all. When we asked him why he had changed his mind, he said that he should not have made any promises before speaking to his manager, and that when he told his manager about the cockroach appearing on our table, his manager said "Well, they seem ok with it," so he was instructed not to offer us anything extra. To the server's credit, he seemed utterly mortified by his manager's lack of concern for what had happened and apologized profusely for both that and again for the presence of the cockroach. To be completely clear, what was upsetting wasn't that we didn't get anything for free; it was the fact that the management seemed completely unconcerned about the fact that a cockroach had just frolicked across one of their customer's tables in the middle of their meal. No manager came over to check things out even though I saw one across the room talking to our server. When this happened, the restaurant was pretty empty, too; aside from our party, there were maybe three or four other tables with patrons. I had a really bad experience the fist time I went there (waited over and hour for take-out and food was cold.), but the second time I went (about 2 weeks later) was much improved. Seems that most of the kinks have been worked out, and the food is great. read more

Originally, I had given this place 3 stars and felt terrible. I didn't have the best experience here, but the manager emailed me to apologize which was very nice Pitfire is very busy and there is a big chance you will have to wait. You can order it for delivery if you don't want to deal with the crowd. However, if you have kids, it's a good place to bring them because it can be a little noisy and others won't feel disturbed The salads are good and gluten free pizza is good, considering it's gluten free. Meh. That's how I feel about Pitfire. Granted, it was my first experience (I usually wait to review until my second visit) but I'm not sure when I'll make it back. The food was pretty good. I split a Big Sur pizza and house salad with a co-worker. The salad had a good taste, but wasn't satisfying. The pizza was pretty tasty. I love untraditional pizzas, so this one made me happy. The service was pretty eh. I had to go get my own plate. We asked for water and got a pitcher but no glasses. My coworker got schooled because she forgot her number at the register and the waiter pretty much told her she wouldn't get her food if she was so absent-minded. I felt like waiter training 101 was going on. Hoping for a more balanced perspective on this place and re-review soon. read more

Excellent flavor combinations on the pizzas, great (huge!), shareable chopped salad, nice drink selection ... I'm a fan. I do agree that the noise level is strange given the families that tend to frequent Pitfire, but for a casual dinner, I don't find it intolerable. Service is also generally quick and smooth. You have to wait in line to order (which sometimes feels more stressful to me than having table service), but the line moves quickly and food is delivered promptly. Wonderfully made individual artisan pizzas. They know how to do a great crust. More than that, my girlfriend says they make the best gluten-free pizza in town. All good signs, but I came with a large group of 7 people, and the food was coming out 1 dish at a time in 5-10 minute intervals. I usually try something off the specials menu but I've had almost all the pizzas on the regular menu and have been satisfied. I wish they had more variety in their menu, but with that said I am a fan of their grilled steak salad (minus the candied walnuts). Other than that, their pizza crust has a slightly sourdough-y flavor (unless it's in my imagination) and it's yummy! When I am not avoiding carbs, I order the pepperoni pizza with garlic, jalapenos, and extra cheese (as they are usually skimpy with the cheese). Mmm...quite delicious. Pitfire Pizza is really two restaurants: the funky urban go-to place in the 'nabe that you head to when you are craving something besides the usual sad fare that passes for rustic Italian in Los Angeles (not busy) or the chaotic disorganized mess that still manages to produce good food (busy). We've experienced both and the good news is, the food always wins. The bad news is, this place tends to feel a little unmoored when they are packed with people. It's an odd premise - you line up and then, after your food is ordered, you are given a number and then you look for a table. You find a table, put the number on the table, and then a waiter comes with your food and anything else you need. When it's slow, you can even bypass this step and sit down at a table and the waiter will take your order. When it's super-packed, anxiety sets in. What if there are no tables available when you finally place your order? Usually it's not an issue, but there have to be some times when people are standing there with numbers and food is in the hopper and there are no tables. Wouldn't it be easier just to seat people like a regular place? I'm not sure. This restaurant has about four or five locations and this same premise applies to all of them, so they must be doing something right. It *is* a little on the pricey side, but well worth it. We went twice last week. The first time, it was early and therefore slow. We always start with the chicken meatballs. To die for. Get an extra side of the fantastic marinara. We usually order pizza. The burrata pie is terrific, as is the boyfriend's usual, which is margherita with added pepperoni. They have a very good house salad and the soups are intriguingly good and well balanced. The cucumber (is it watermelon, as some reviewers have said? I could swear it was cucumber) lemonade is also great. Don't forget the desserts! We've only tried the chocolate chip cookie, but the ice cream toppings look great. Our server was very helpful and things went smoothly. They also have a decent wine selection and a tiny note, they have pretty cool wine glasses to boot. Then, we went last Saturday night. Okay, a lot of what happened was really not Pitfire's fault. Note to the people who thought that bringing about 45 children ranging in age from 3 to 6 to Pitfire for a kids' party was a good idea: what the hell were you thinking? Parties like this are the sole reason Chuckie Cheese was invented. Talk about clueless. These lunatics and their children basically set this small well-oiled place into a tailspin. With only a few servers on board, all of our food came at once - salads, pizzas, drinks, sides, appetizers, sandwiches. Just piles and piles of food. THEN, our server came in introduced herself. It was so bizarre. But the food was still great - we got some new stuff. Grilled Steak Salad - great, with nice chunks of bleu cheese. Panini - very flavorful, but really not a Panini - more like a giganto muffalata sandwich. Very tasty chicken and veggies in there. I got what the boyfriend usually gets, but with sausage - it was a little disappointing, but I'm partial to spicy sausage - why not offer it? Next time, I'll try the kale soup or one of the pizzas with kale on it. As some of you know, I'm a kale freak and not a lot of places offer it. The pumpkin pizza looked very desirable as well. Your best bet: go early. By 7 or 8 pm, it's pretty busy in there. This kids' party thing is not really a fair indicator of how it is, but still, the less people in the restaurant, the better timed your food will be and the better seat you'll be able to score. One thing I notice, no matter when I go - the people behind the counter, who are uniformly nice, tend to be very slow and uncertain on the register. I have a feeling it's laid out awkwardly on the screen. Pretty much everyone has to search for a lot of items. I think this is a Pitfire Menu Screen Design problem, not the people behind the counter's problem. Another cool thing: they have a DJ who does stellar mixes! We also like the very cool hanging light globes that make the place seem warm and aglow. Of course we'll go back - again and again. Our dining companions the slow night ate there *four* times in one week. We've noticed a huge improvement on the fantastic pizzas as well. In the old days, there was a lot of crust and not too much center. Now, that ratio is reversed and you still get a great crust - be sure to dip it in the leftover marinara that you got (you did get it, right?) with your meatballs. Just go - but go early! read more

This is literally the best pizza I have had in Los Angeles. I hate to say it because this is our local hang out and I'd hate to have it more packed than what it already is. But, I think the secret is out already. My husband and I love this place so much that we had our wedding rehearsal dinner here! Been coming here since it first opened. It's my hubby's favorite, and it's so casual, so we're here about once a week. Cool outdoor patio in warmer months. The crust is not cracker thin, but not thick, either. I love how they cook it in the fire, and I have only been here once (out of about 50) where the crust was too crispy for my taste. My husband loves the burrata pie, and even adds pepperoni or jalapeno sometimes. He always gets a chocolate chip cookie, and eats it before we've even finished our order. IT'S GOOD. We both love their beer selection. I love their seasonal pizza pies, and my favorites are the pumpkin pizza (it may sound gross, but it's a foodie's dream) in fall and winter and tomato heirloom (as well as the hmmm....artichoke, I think?) for spring and summer. I have also had the Big Sur (with shrimp) which I like a lot, and the folded garlic chicken (I ordered it unfolded), and their mushroom. All are yummy. Chopped salad and seasonal grilled veggies for sides are always good (and they support local, and seasonal produce...yay!), and the mushroom chicken pasta in white sauce is addicting. The chicken panini for lunch rocks, too. I didn't like the tuna sandwich, but I got that to go, though, which could make a difference. Coming early may end up in lots of families with kids, which we don't mind (funny to see them running around, dancing and super-happy), and later in the night once the families clear out a bit more (but there usually is a line...sometimes they'll serve you sangria while you wait), there is a DJ and we always love the music they play, whether it's Zepplin and Beatles, or lounge/groovy/ambient. Even though there are some changes here recently, with staff and management (sorry to see you go, Larry!), the service is still always "great to pretty good" (never bad), and sometimes we still get complimentary stuff. Stay away, extremely rude staff with the exception of the busser. No employee was at the front to greet us as we walked in, nor was there a host stand. Once a table opened up, we decided to sit down. The busser was extremely courteous before two other employees began barking at us that we needed to order first before grabbing a table. As we walked in there was no one online ordering food but as we sat down the table was apparently being saved for a five top. As a former eight year employee of hospitality I realized this place is poorly run and in need of some customer service 101. We were excited to have a Pitfire come to our neighborhood- great to have a spot to walk to. The food is solid. Fresh ingredients nicely presented. The problem is this- Self Seating. And the "rules" for self seating. You are to wait in line to place your order. Only after you place your order and get an order number to put on your table, are you allowed to find a seat. 1/2 the time people ignore this and send someone to grab a table while they wait in line. Managers and staff tend to pretend they don't notice this unless someone complains. Additionally the managers will send staff to "hold" tables for their friends. It's a chaotic scene. Stressing out over finding a table,having kids running everywhere and feeling literally like a number does not make this restaurant top on my list. read more

We have been to this place many times. We have even recommended this place to our friends and even have been here with our little league team. Heck, we've had many birthday dinners here. Don't know if I'll be back after today. We came here for lunch on 9/01/2012. The cashier was friendly and helpful with the order. I think that's the only area where we actually received customer service. We were surprised to see empty tables in this place for once. Don't get me wrong , we were not the only ones in the place, It just wasn't busy as it is in the evening. Also the place was fully staffed. I thought there were too many workers staffed. I guess they just took advantage of the time to converse. Once we sat down we only saw a worker when they came to our table when they brought our food out. I did see a blonde offer the table next to us refills and boxes. She never stopped by our table. No one ever came to our table As for the staff, those behind the counter were busy. The others were at a table and they were either talking or eating with other workers. As for that blonde waitress, I did see her eating at the table , even noticed her eating ice cream. I had no clue they served that here. When I started typing this on my phone, there were five workers at that table. My husband had to go up to the counter to get my refill. My husband did mention that other patrons were upset, because they too had to go to the counter for assistance. For my second refill he just grabbed the pitcher on the counter and brought it to our table and no one noticed it was missing. I seriously doubt we will be back. after today. I've driven by the Westwood location a bunch but it never moved me to go in. Tried the newly opened Culver City location. Good pizzas. Got three the pumpkin, the mushroom, and the burrata pizzas. The burrata was the best and the tomato sauce was tasty. Not Mozza, but certainly not the wait or the drive either. Their beer and wine selection is pretty slim, but overall, a good option for the Westside. It's also a good place for kids (at least early) since it's casual. We'll be back. read more

Just stopped in today as i passed it after doing some volunteer work at a homeless shelter across the street. checked out the yelp reviews prior to going and read about the crowds and unruly kiddies. so a worked some more and went at around 3:30 pm to find only two tables occupied and they were finishing up. seemed like there was alot of staff milling around and socializing, requesting songs from the dj, i assumed they were getting ready for the dinner rush?? got to the counter and nobody seemed to wanted to greet me until two gals behind the counter nodded to another who was supposed to be working the cash register i guess. but a "hi sir someone will be with you in a second" would have been nice. being an interior designer i was more digging the space and checking out all the details rather than worry about not being greeted in a nice manner. had my pick of all the different seating types, which is cool and when dining alone i like a high table, so i took one next to the pizza makers themselves. not long after, i hear an "order up" bell ring. a pizza goes on the pickup counter right in front of me.....and i wait....and wait. out of the 5-8 people milling around, one i suspect is the tall owner guy i read mention of. not one person noticed a single customer in a now EMPTY restaurant sitting without his food and a lone pizza under the warming lights. i tap my number card loudly with a billy crystal 'hellloooooooo" then ttwo of the gals seem to be done for the day and everyone is saying their goodbyes.... until i turn the guy in front of the oven, "excuse me is that #15? and should i just get it myself? ( to be honest by this time a total of 3 other customers had come in and had just ordered after me, so make that 4 people in a place that seats oh what 80-100+??) he brings it over without an apology or mention to the waitstaff so i dont get the plate they are supposed to bring me. or the salt, pepper or oregano (which come in little "pinching dishes" from what i later looked at and wasnt too crazy about random people pinching into loose spices with their bare fingers before me) i happened to grab my own silverware before sitting down anyway. im by no means a foodie, but when it comes to pizza, i take note, i make some killer ones myself and the pitfire sausage was tight. great crust, sauce and cheeses all fresh and tasty. so on that they deserve another chance. plus the interior and exterior architecture is well done and a good sound system with a little iron & wine didnt hurt either. beer and wine selection looks good, wine could be a bit cheaper by the glass.... just keep in mind. ... large staff PLUS owner on site, 4 people waiting for their food and nobody in line to order, and i had to request if my pizza was going to be served to me as it sat on the warming tray....pretty shocking even if you did just open. read more

Ok, been back several times since they opened (I live just 2 blocks from the place) and really wanted to try to give them 3 stars, but just can't.. They just can't get it together. I have had some good meals there, but the hassles(seating, inconsistent food, kids) just arent worth it. There always seems to be some kind a drama that ruins our meal. Sunday was a typical outing for us there. Went between lunch and dinner and the place was half empty. So we thought things should go smooth. First dirty tables everywhere..mind you they are cleared, but apparently they use sticky wet towels to wipe them. Disgusting. Ordered a glass of wine and it looked like they only poured us 3 ounces. When we asked about it they pointed to the measuring cup they use and sure engough they realized they were much less that the standard 5-6 ounces. It was embarrassing for us to even have to ask, but at $9 a glass, they should damn better know simple things like that. Surprise our food was great.. The steak salad was really awesome, the pizza only slighlty burned. That was a first for us.. But our neighbors table was a disaster. The lady order a pizza.. I swear they delivered a round piece of carbon! The whole thing was black.. They put it down and left. She looked at us and we all laughed!! Total strangers around us all were perplexed that someone would try to serve that to anyone. Then the really indignant part is she had to get up take it back to counter to complain (they don't have servers, it's run like a fast food joint.) The place is just totally mismanaged. They are sitting on a goldmine and might be making some money as they seem to be busy, but they losing repeat customers everyday and they will run out of new faces soon. They just don't seem to care. I know there is something like a bad night BUT kids run around (atmosphere is prime with concrete floors, and loud DJ music). LAST night 5 very loud, screaming children ran throught the resturant for an hour. Of course the two Moms did nothing. SInce they were playing hide and seek almost under our table we complained three times. The manager asked them to be quiet which last about 3 mins. The last time we complained the parents were leaving any way. The waiter suggested we come in later because less kids would be eating then!! We were trying to eat a nice dinner before a movie! The food and service are amazing at Pitfire. When you walk in, you are immediately taken with the beautiful, chill atmosphere. All of the staff are warm and welcoming, yet they keep things moving and don't hover. I came for some pizza and a salad and I was wowed by the food and amazed by the service. I was even visited by the manager, Demetrius, who just came over to check on us and make sure we were absolutely satified with our service. We were! This is a gem and one you must try.
