They are horrible and charges extra for everything put in the side without telling you ahead of time. I was charged extra $2 for ginger and Mango to be on the side! (I received 4 pieces of ginger and 4 small tiny mango pieces total...) They have the smallest scoop of fish I've ever seen in any poke places ever, and the bowl size is depressing. There was no napkins given to either! Furthermore, the vegetables that are topping were not fresh as the broccoli is bitter, and the shredded cabbages were dry... The only redeeming quality is that the fish is fresh but you get 4 pieces per scoop so hopefully you have a small appetite and a huge bank account! I have never felt so annoyed for tipping before... I used to come here religiously when they first opened. Wasn't a fan of sweetfin across the street so I came back to pokewan. Two things have changed- 1- they charge you extra now if you want a small bowl but put inside the larger bowl. Super lame as the price of a large plastic bowl isn't that much more for a small. I like the extra room in the bowl because I always get take out and if I get the small inside a small bowl the lid smashes all my food leaving me no room to move the items around without spilling! The quality was pretty good but the delivery needs work. The black rice was well cooked and I loved that they offered a quinoa kale salad as a base also. They also had cucumber noodles as a base option which I'd never seen before and is a unique offering. However there wasn't nearly enough base for all the toppings and sauce so I would get a side of rice next time (which at 2.50 seems pretty overpriced for rice but whatever). The fish was fresh but it was hard to taste in all the excess sauce it was swimming in. The staff person poured on a huge glob of sauce before I ask them to take it easy. We walked here from my brother's new condo so we didn't have to deal with parking. This shopping center can get crowded and there are a plethora of enticing dining establishments. Fortunately we chose Pokewan and even though I had no idea how this worked they offer a menu of choices where you don't have to make a decision. I chose the protein power and was not disappointed. It's basically deconstructed sushi but much more flavorful. After I ordered I saw that there was corn and asked to substitute it for watermelon radish, which they happily did. This bowl was huge and I couldn't finish the entire meal so the price was right for fresh salmon, tuna and crab. Service is super and there are plenty of tables inside and a few outside as well. Came here to get a Sunday lunch after grocery shopping. Had a coupon for a free Dole whip with an order so I got that too. It was a huge serving of Dole whip. By the time I finished it, I was too full to eat the poke bowl so I saved that for dinner. The poke bowl comes in 2 sizes, small and large. I got the large with 4 different types of toppings. Pokewan recently opened in the Del Mar Highlands shopping center. The poke shop is located on the bottom level next to the yogurt store and Pappalecco (which does anyone else read/enunciate as Poppa Let Go). Pokewan has received decent reviews. The owners also have a stake in Love Boat Sushi. I visited one late afternoon and was lucky that the restaurant wasn't too busy. It felt different ordering poke here at Pokewan. There seems to be extra steps I wasn't too fond of at first. There are two containers on top of your designated tray : a paper container and a plastic bowl. love how Pokewan offers cucumber noodles (+1.50 extra). That's another great low carb poke option. I didn't feel like splurging though so I had opted for the mixed greens. They put the base in the round plastic bowl. I also added avocado and imitation crab (no extra charge!) which they put on top of the lettuce mix. The scoops were generous. Then they put your poke mix in's in the paper container. I opted for tobiko, onions, scallions, furikake. You then choose your fish. I choose the "Happier" portion which comes with four scoops of fish. They weigh out the portion which made me sad as I thought the amount would be tiny. The girl said its 50 grams per scoop (I think?). She put my container of mix ins on a scale, tare the weight (bravo on that), and then adds the scoops of fish. I opted for 3 scoops of salmon and 1 scoop of scallop. You then choose your sauce. I went with the pokewan which had soy, spicy sesame oil, and sriracha. They add the sauce to your fish and mix ins. They then pour the poke on to your base. They have such an eclectic selection of toppings. Some were mind blowing to me (for poke) : corn, beets, mango salsa, blueberries (!). I did a double take when I saw the cheeses (no extra charge). I personally wouldn't add goat cheese or fresh mozzarella balls to my poke but I guess others would. I thought this was fascinating as I haven't seen this option before. I choose the crispy garlic which Olivia generously placed on top of my finished poke creation. I think my poke creation came out pretty. I wanted to take a quick picture before they put a lid on top of the poke (I ordered it to go). My toppings consisted of watermelon radishes, seaweed salad, jalapenos, cilantro, and topped with the crispy garlic. The poke felt heavy which was a great sign that it was a substantial order for $10.75. A few notes: - they have Dole Whip! - they also have the corn canes which can be filled with their vanilla soft serve. I think you get a free cane on weekends between certain hours when you order the large poke bowl - they offer sushi which is half off after 4p I think - they also sell fried pork skin (see pic) - I got a free plastic logo'd bag for my take out - Olivia and staff couldn't have been more patient and kind with patrons that day The poke tasted ok. I would probably try another sauce next time (perhaps the yuzu citrus) and request more of it as the poke didn't seem to hold on to much of the sauce. I thought all the add ins were too much. The slippery seaweed, the heavy avocado, the thick scoop of imitation crab (needed more spicy mayo) were actually distractions to the simplicity I wanted from the salmon and scallops. Don't get me wrong that the quality of ingredients were great. I just might have added way too much to my bowl to get my money's worth (and to calm my excitement from so many toppings to add). my blog has more detailed description of my poke and fun experience here at Pokewan I would recommend Pokewan. It's a fun way to get introduced to poke if you haven't tried so in the past. The portion size is generous and the quality of the ingredients was good. I'd return to try another creation (and sauce). The first visit here was a mixed bag, but it has promise. This was maybe a "3.5 star" visit, but I'm going to take some of the blame in making my own order a bit wonky. First, this might be the most affordable meal in all of Del Mar Highlands. It's not a huge bowl, but for the $11, I was pretty stuffed with the Large size. Poke is rich and satisfying all around, so I'd go Medium next time. It's a little confusing, and I felt bad asking so many questions as preparation is already slow through the line. I can imagine this place would get pretty backed up at peak time. It's also noisy, so it was very hard to understand the service person ask the questions. If that kind of experience stresses you out, and it could, avoid busy times. I agree with the other reviewers that said the poke would benefit from some marinating time. It's a bit raw/bland/rich to just toss some sauce on it and call it done. It comes through more as sashimi than poke. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, but it's not a balanced bowl. The fish itself was pretty good, and the toppings were quite varied and flavorful. This is one of those strange things that might be better as take-out, with a couple hours of flavor-blending time in the fridge. You can go nuts from the 100 decisions to make as well. It's not clear why their pre-selected signature combinations cost $1 more than the pick-it-yourself combinations that would contain the same things. Weird. I tried their packaged sushi (2pc) as well, and it was predictably okay. I'd give this place a second try, but have a better game-plan of what to pick. My daughter loves poke and has been asking to go for weeks. We finally visited today for a late weekday lunch. The service at this make-your-own poke bowl restaurant was quick and friendly. I chose the happier bowl (4 scoops of protein) to split with my daughter. The bowl is built in stages. First you choose the carbs (white rice, brown rice, quinoa $, cucumber noodles). I think you can get a combination, but I didn't realize this and just got white rice. It includes up to 4 add-inns. We added avocado, cucumbers and sesame (all great additions). Next the 4 scoops of protein. We added spicy tuna, ahi tuna, salmon and tofu. Our favorites were the ahi tuna and salmon. The herbed tofu was fine (note that it's cold). We didn't care for the spicy tuna. We chose the Pokewan sauce - it was good, but there was definitely too much of it. Finally the toppings - we added cilantro, watermelon radish, crunchy onions and crunchy garlic. All in all, a tasty bowl! For the next time, we know what proteins to get, and also to go easy on the sauce. Today's was a good first visit - it's likely to only get better as we refine our perfect bowl :). Review update. This place is bad last couple times and really bad this time. Employee competency level has dropped off a cliff. Incredible slow and disorganized service. Was nobody in here but me at 11am when they open. I was totally ignored for 6 minutes while they made a online order of 8 bowls. Not a hello, not a thought to any of the 3 employees behind the counter to make a bowl for the customer that was there. Finally started my bowl, got green onions that I didn't ask for, sweet onions are horribly cut and huge, avocado was incredibly black to the point I skipped it. Got a water cup and there was no water. I just gave up at this point and sat down and ate my bowl without a drink. This was my favorite poke in San Diego and now I don't even want to come back again. I've been wanting to try this place because the pics looked really good....my bowl looked meh. Probs depend on the employee you get :/ But I was really surprised by the size of their bowls here. Pokewan had two options. A 2 scoop bowl and a 4 scoop bowl. The 2 scoop bowl could maybe (emphasis on maybe) feed a 10 yr old. The 4 scoop bowl was still smaller than a small at other poke shops. Comparing it to my recent visit to Poki One N Half, the size of Pokewon's 4 scoop bowl is probably about 1/3 smaller than Poki One N Half's small bowl. Pokewon do have some unique items that I don't see often at other poke shops -quinoa -cucumber noodles (but this takes up space in their already small bowl) -spicy sesame salmon (I didn't like this since it just tasted salty to me) -radish -mango habanero (I really liked the mango with my poke. Not spicy) -imitation crab (I liked their crab better than Poki One N Half. I think Pokewon's is different from regular imitation crab since it was more orange than regular ones) For the sauce, I got the Pokewan sauce because it was the most popular.... I couldn't taste anything, so I went back and asked for more sauce on the side. For the quality of fish, I'm no expert but it wasn't too different from other poke shops for me. Terrific bowls of high quality seafood. I haven't had a single odd tasting scallop or stringy piece of fish in my poke bowl here! Definitely the best by quality. 90% of the reviews that aren't 4-5 star are because of price. This place is pure quality. You get what you pay for and this place delivers every time. A few updates to the previous review. Their staff have gotten a lot better at interacting with the guests. I think it's because they either get high school kids from the nearby school or tourists that sometimes they just can't seem to figure out who to interact with a normal human guest/customer. Still out of Octopus most days, when they do it's super chopped up, that means that in larger pieces it's chewy and they are trying to mask that. There is a sign that says no shrimp, which appears to be different from the normal shrimp they offer which are boiled. I had a few times where they put the spicy tuna salad into the mixing bowl, effectively mushing it in the mix. I know that's not the normal way and they knew I knew, but failed to acknowledge it a few times. The sauces I think need to be more bold, they are just kinda boring. They tend to build the bowl in a weird way, not in a way that makes it appetizing. It's like they plate it like art and not food They don't carry Spam musubi's anymore, the miso soup is bottomless, maybe not initially worth it, but perhaps if you want something warm to fill you up. The large bowl is mostly rice and a lot of the toppings are for presentation and don't add anything (corn, watermelon radishes). Neither of which are anywhere I've seen in Hawaii. It's great they are expanding on the poke concept, but you have to be a little more true to the form. I get that it's Del Mar, but offer some proper drinks or seaweed other than wakame. People have actually been to Hawaii and have had the real thing and the market it more saturated than you think. It's still a 4 star rating, but not at the pace it's going. Failure to fix issues is going to be their downfall. They aren't innovating, adapting or authentic and you can only get away with it for so long. Poke places are closing now. The poke bubble already popped, so I'm skeptical they will be here in another few years. I probably wont be back much seeing as I'm leaving my job nearby too. read more

Pretty solid spot, I liked the Carlsbad location when it used to be open. They now have some outdoor seating which is shared with the boba spot next door. The fish is good here, the toppings and sauces are even better. Spicy Tuna/Shrimp, Half Rice/Salad is my go to. I would say this is a much better option than Sweetfin which is across the street in One Paseo. read more

I work in the area and normally come here all the time but today I was severely disappointed. It took the staff at least a 5 minutes to notice that I had walked in and by that time there was a few more people in line. I always order the happy bowl and it normally fills me up, so today I did the same. This is what I got. The bowl is barely over half way full and I paid $10 for it. If in a pinch and looking for an easy lunch, I would eat there again. However, the customer service is lacking. I waited ~5 minutes at the counter without being addressed by the employee working there. I understood that they were preparing other orders, but at some point it would have been nice for them to say "hey" or "I'll be right with you" so that I felt more welcome. Stopped in today in the area and had a hankering for some poke. I believe a "happy" bowl with 2 scoops of protein ran around the $9 range after tax. I came here encouraged by the positive reviews. My only commentary is....have none of you ever been to another poke chain? They have a bowl in one size, with price points (9.95 vs 12.95) based on how many scopes of protein you get. Each scoop of protein contains about 4 pieces of fish. Each piece of fish is about 2cm long, 1cm wife and ~0.5cm thick. The bowl itself is about 6inches in diameter of food space. To put things in perspective, that's the size of my iPhone screen. It is about 4inches tall if filled completely....or half an iPhone size. I'm providing the measurement scales so you understand truly how little food you get for your money. Never again. read more

***MACRO FRIENDLY ALERT*** YES! FINALLY! I have found a macro/keto-friendly poke place! I'm gonna be honest with you, I really don't like spring mix in my poke bowls. It doesn't vibe with me. However, this place offers cucumber noodles which are so good!! Their variety of fresh fish is astonishing. I got the salmon and spicy tuna, while my bf got salmon and scallops. In short, everything tasted great. The scallops had some sauce around it, that was great! Since I'm on the keto diet (low carb/high fat) I skipped the sauces and asked for sesame oil on the side.
