I am extremely upset and disappointed that the two staff working did not have a mask. Not wearing a mask communicates to customers that safety is not a concern. The store is very small and not much room for social distance, and it was evident that this was not a concern. What GEM this place is!! Tucked away in a nondescript strip mall in Orange, the Polka Deli is a rare find amid the other businesses. I met a young lady at the counter, Anya. I explained that my guy's family is Polish and that he really missed the fantastic Polish foods he grew up with in the Chicago area and I asked if she had any Pierogi's. She pointed to an ENTIRE FREEZER packed full of them! Every kind you could imagine: Potato & cheese, pork & beef, kraut & mushroom, strawberry, plum... etc! She was also nice enough to give me a sample of a smoked Polish Sausage she thought he would like. It was amazing. It had the best smoky flavor I've tasted in quite a long time. The store was packed full of Polish grocery items. It really felt like I was swept away from California when I opened the door. I even encountered several customers coming in and speaking to Anya in Polish. My guy swears by the Pierogi's I purchased at Polka, saying they are the best he's had since he moved from Chicago years and years ago. Downright delicious foods, wonderful service (Anya is delightful!), specialty goods you cant find anywhere else in the O.C. makes the Polka Deli a true hidden gem in my book. I am 1/4 Polish, but I have never had Polish food before! I decided to change that yesterday and stop in Polka Deli to get food for dinner. This place is super small, but jam packed with Polish grocery items. I had read about their frozen Pierogis and different sausages, so I was already set on purchasing some. However, when I walked in, the first thing I saw was Polish Ramen. What?? Of course, I had to buy that. I got pickle, beet, and doner kebab ramens...can't wait to try those. I also decided on two packages of Pierogis, potato & cheese, and "meat," which I found out was pork when I got home and read the ingredients. I asked what types of sausages were in the case and the lady working quickly ran through them, but her accent was so thick and she spoke so softly, I wasn't exactly sure what she said. I bought the one I heard her call "smokey." Total was $27 for enough Pierogis for two (maybe three) meals, smoked sausage (kielbasa maybe?) for at least three meals, three packages of ramen, and a jar of Polish pickles. The food was outstanding! We both loved both types of Pierogis and the meat was great too. I know I will come back here again and buy some more Polish food, definitely buy other flavors of Pierogis and try some of the different sausages they offer. This place is great! Sort of like that Russian market in Costa Mesa, but obviously Polish. They said they've been here for thirty years. Not sure how I missed them, but they have great imports! Got beer, Gypsy Canadian bacon, smoked fish, soups, celery salad, and a bunch of other stuff for a low price. They have a good selection of pickles and sauerkraut too. There's also fresh baked goods, meats and stuffed pasta. Definitely a unique way to spice up your home cooking. I recommend it for those who like Eastern European cuisine. Take care! read more

The food is so good!! I haven't had a pierogi that delicious since I was in actual Poland. We ordered two different types of pierogi, the beef pierogi and the cheese & potato pierogi. I'm usually iffy about the meat in pierogis, but these were so high-quality and tasty. The cheese & potato pierogi was my favorite dish of the meal :) The keilbasa sausage was one of the best I've ever had, and the beef stick was AMAZING. The cabbage rolls were some of the best we've ever had as well. My only complaint is that the hours of operation are a little sparse - they aren't open on Sundays, and they close at 4pm on Saturdays. We were craving Polish food today and left the house with 20 mins before they closed, but we called ahead in the car. And they said they would wait for us to arrive before closing. So nice of them! Actually, I kind of like that they aren't open all hours like other restaurants/delis; makes them seem more authentic somehow. We were a little disapointed at first that it wasn't a restaurant where we could order right there and be served, but cooking the dishes at home was a fun experience! Grace emailed me back the same day and said yes, it was, and we worked it out and yesterday I got my favorite bread delivered right to my door. My first experience at Polka Deli and it was crowded, but the line moved quickly. Very small deli, but everything you would want is stocked. We got fresh kielbasa, kanbanosy, Napoleon cake, Polish beer, Kosciusko mustard, potato and cheese pierogis and blintzes. I later saw on Yelp that they have kruschiki, and wish I had bought some. The rumors are true: You can get paczki here!! I don't think they regularly have them, but if you're a SoCal transplant looking to get your Fat Tuesday fix, this is the place to go. They also have a huge selection of peirogi flavors (although it's limited to only one or two brands), packaged cadies and other goods, as well as a full case of meats. Based on some of the pictures I saw on Yelp before I went, I was hoping for a larger deli case with ready-to-eat food, but most of what they offer is packed to take home and cook yourself. But back to the paczki...the real reason I drove 40 minutes to find this gem. I pre-ordered online about 3-4 days in advance to pick up the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. They don't require payment in advance, and my order was already separated and ready to go when I arrived. The flavor options: custard (with chocolate frosting), prune, raspberry, and lemon. I ordered at least one of each, but didn't end up trying the lemon myself. The raspberry was by far my favorite. *this is a review for paczki ONLY so might not be representative of the entire store* I was so excited for Fat Thursday and craved polish donuts ( paczki) to remind me of where I am from. I preordered them online and noticed right away that the types of filling offered were different than the ones I'm used to. I was still thinking I would give them a try and in my heart I really wanted to like them. So today I picked up all 8 of them, 2 of each flavour. Immediately just by the looks of these donuts I noticed a huge difference from the ones in Poland. I don't want to be all too negative in this review, but honestly Polka Deli should just stop calling these donuts paczki because to be fair- they were the worst paczki I have ever had in my entire life and not even 1% close to the ones you get in Poland. These were worse than the worst paczki you get in your local polish Aushan/Biedronka and that is very very low standard... Paczki need to be made a specific way, these were tasting processed, greasy, so sweet that I had to drink a gallon of water afterwards. And the filling haha don't even get me started. What was this chemical liquid in there because it surely wasn't natural filling. Just to give you an idea a paczek should taste light, not greasy, not too sweet, very lightly glazed (glaze must be homemade, here I could taste the chemical), with a slightly lighter line in the center that tells you the dough grew naturally and light all natural rose petal "jam" ( or other similar natural variations). Love this little hidden Polish gem! We've been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the selection and quality, not to mention the cleanliness of the this place. Our family decided to go Polish for our Easter feast this year: kielbasa, kapusta (great gramma's recipe), golumpki (their frozen) and pierogi. I have to say the keilbasa we go this year was the best we've had since my great uncle made it from scratch in his Toledo, Ohio basement!! (like 50 years ago!) I think this is the only Polish/Slavic/Eastern European grocery store within a 20-mile radius of where I live. As such, they've already got an edge over any other supplier of kielbasa (kolbasz, kovbasa--whatever you fancy) in the area, since Hillshire Farms is just about the only alternative you have at your disposal! They've got it in several different varieties (a thin spicy one, the thick "regular" one, and then the smoked horseshoe-shaped type). While I'm accustomed to having kolbasi sauteed lightly with onions, I find theirs to be especially delicious sliced and eaten as it is bought, with some mustard or horseradish. There's also a freezer case with all sorts of pierogi (pyrohy, varenyky, etc) and blinichki, and probably a dozen other things I've never heard of before. The lady behind the counter can be a bit gruff--I asked her if she would cut the kolbasi in half since the piece I ordered was rather long and cumbersome. She told me I could go home and get a knife and cut it myself, with the requisite motions demonstrating how I could accomplish such a complicated endeavor. No s**t, lady. Then again, maybe she was ticked off because I was referring to the items by their Ukrainian names. Gotta love Slavic rivalry. It's not enough to dock points--the area needs a store like this and I hope it's around for a long time to come. read more

Every Fat Tuesday since moving to California, I have done an extensive search for paczkis in SoCal. They're here! Detroit and Chicago expats - you CAN find paczkis at this deli on Fat Tuesday. I went in today without having pre-ordered them, and only custard were available (I snagged the last two raspberry filled). The owner told me to order at least 24 hours in advance next year. Apparently they freeze well. It is a small, unassuming store...you wall in and it is wall to wall Polish food. Visited this shop located in a small strip mall for my first time three days before Christmas and the line was out the door - That in itself should be a good sign of how authentic Polka Deli is. Their shelves are stocked with dozens of delicious, hard-to-find items from Poland (okay, hard-to-find anywhere in the states outside of Chicago): from mustard and pickles to candies and sweets. Polka Deli's meat and baked goods selections are also very decent - and given the holiday demand, this little shop managed to keep the fresh goods coming and did not disappoint its customers. Also, I don't speak Polish, but the staff, as well as my fellow holiday Polka Deli patrons, were so friendly and helpful that my 1.5 hour-long wait to check out was seamless and surprisingly pleasant. I finally went in after passing by for the last 15 years and I was so pleased with the selection and the friendly help! I purchased way more than I had anticipated because of the great selection. I went back today to grab a couple more things and the line was so long! I was pleased to see that they have such a booming business especially during this crazy time. Are pierogi worth the full day preparation effort at home? no. .... Polka Deli. From pickled herring, to polish beer, all the Polish sausages & meats, the juices, the pate, pickles - you name it, they have it - but best of all - they have the good imported liquors, the ones that you can't get at BevMo, and the one that you can, is usually on back-order & costs almost double there. Although, the Zywiecz beer is cheaper at BevMo, but not by much. They have about 20 different varieties of Pierogi, including the berry filled ones, and they are the good ones imported from Chicago - not the Mrs. T's you get at the grocery store! read more
