This place was quite the surprise! It's massive!!! A Chicago themed menu with many of the traditional Chicago style plates. Great for large groups, after game group meals, and birthdays. The restaurant was so well run and everyone was so kind and attentive. I was surprised how many options they offer from sodas, teas and beer. They had the most insane strawberry lemon cake shake, we all were so taken back by the flavor and the actual cake in the shake, so yum! Now for the food....the salads were hearty and the dressings were so tasty!!! The chicken was so tender and made the salad this with the toppings combined worked so well for a quick salad on the go, it comes with a drink and a delicious piece of bread if you do the combo. The burger was quite large and really tasty. The cheese for the fries is a must, one of our favorite parts of the meal. We ordered several peppers just to try them, super good but more sweet that spicy. Definitely will be back! read more

portillos is a great place with great food, however this particular location has an employee and/or floor manager that goes by the name of "Ryan" who does not care about his job or the customers that enter this establishment. The people who walk in should not have to feel like they are bothering him or that they are wasting his valuable precious time EVER! We visited with our family when we were in AZ for my son's volleyball tournament. Our extended family are huge fans of Portillo's, and they usually get the Italian Beef or one of the salads. My grandson ate a little of everything! I ordered a breaded chicken sandwich that was very good. My son didn't care for his cheeseburger (he's a picky one). The hubs had Italian Beef and he said it was just ok (he's as picky as our son). Tasty fries and onion rings. Good shakes. The line was very long, but it was their grand opening. I grew up with portillos so happy to have one close to me again. The standout dish for me was definitely the Italian beef sandwich - the meat was juicy and flavorful, and I appreciated the generous portion size. However, when I received my sandwich, I noticed that the bread was cut very poorly, which meant that the meat wasn't enclosed by the bread. Brand new in Gilbert az. We went for the first time today for a midday lunch. I cannot tell you how underwhelmed we were. This is a huge place with lots of seating for hundreds. The counter staff very pleasant. The facilities were clean and attractive. The food not so much. The Italian beef sandwich was more like tasteless boiled beef with water for sauce. The chili dog was mediocre and I have to say Costco's 1.50 dog is 5 times better. Came here with a friend who said I had to try this place because it's so good. She got the Italian beef and sausage sandwich but in a bowl... it looked ok lol. I got the chopped chicken salad and was bummed it was breaded chicken instead of grilled but I was starving so I ate it anyways. I didn't use any dressing since the ranch was foul. I'm really picky when it comes to ranch and this ranch was not the business but luckily the salad was still good without dressing. It's loud with customer noise and chatter. Don't that scare you away the Big Italian beef is very good, you can get it with spice or sweet peppers. I like it spicy and it was just right for my taste. We have visited Portillos in Tempe but this was our first visit to the Gilbert location. We were able to walk right up to the counter, no long lines, and order. The cashier was polite and confident. We ordered the crispy chicken sandwich combo with fries and a drink. The crispy fish sandwich, the Maxwell street polish sausage, and onion rings. Everything was super delicious! The chicken sandwich was okay my son said but my daughter loved the fish sandwich, I tried a bite and it was very tasty. My polish sausage was topped with a generous amount of caramelized onions, yellow mustard and served in a poppy seed bun. This may be one of the most delicious things I have tasted in a very long time! The portion is large, the cook on the sausage is perfect, the onions are perfect and the bun is soft. The onion rings were delicious as well. Super crunchy and tasty. The only negative comment I have it that it was HOT in there. Like it felt like there was no AC on. My daughters cheeks were red she was so hot. It was over 110 out so they need to crank that AC down so guests and employees are comfortable. The water tasted like they didn't sufficiently rinse something after cleaning, and you have to ask them for more water in a tiny cup.
