There are three styles of pizza to choose from, from deep dish Chicago to thinner types. They have a great deal of fresh toppings and one can customize pizzas to their liking. The sauce and toppings were all flavorful and delish but the crust was subpar. It was dry and crumbly similar to a burnt pie crust (but it wasnt burnt). The crust itself didnt have much flavor and reminded us of a water cracker. Also each pizza topping besides cheese is an additional $3-4!! After visiting family in Chicago and partaking of Malnati's, I had a real craving for Chicago deep dish. This was our first time at this location (though we had been to the location in USC Village before it closed), so we knew what to expect in terms of food. Parking is metered street, 7 days a week, and we were able to find a spot a couple blocks away. The dining area is set-up as one giant space, with medium sized tvs scattered around. It was fairly busy on a sunday afternoon. We've heard good things about Rance's wings, so we placed an order (knowing the pizza would take a while). Six wings for $13 (expensive but that's how much they are now). They were small/medium size, and were well spiced even before they were sauced and were served hot/crispy...we happily devoured them. They have many beers on tap...we ordered one that we hadn't tried before: Harland Rice Lager ($8.25). Very, very easy to drink....could have easily shared a pitcher. They have 3 different types of pizza here: thin (tavern), pan, and stuffed. We ordered a large stuffed with beef pepperoni and sausage for $36.50, and it came out in under 30 minutes. I really like Rance's crust...it stays crispy even with all the wet ingredients and isn't so buttery. It is overflowing with good cheese, and is topped with very chunky, plain canned tomatoes. It has big sausage chunks, instead of the disc that are popular in Chicago...that being said, there was enough sausage so every bite contained a large amount. The beef pepperoni wasn't really a factor...if you want pepperoni, I would get the normal, pork kind that is offered. Next time, I would order some sort of vegetable instead (or maybe even pineapple). A stuffed pizza should have a thin crust on top, right below the sauce....I couldn't tell....so to me, this was no different than a deep dish. Also as mentioned, the sauce and sausage were very mildly seasoned...I would have preferred more italian seasoning (I like fennel while I know a lot of people don't). Each slice (8 per pie) from a large is thick, enough to sate the hunger of most people. I ended up eating two slices while there, and I was stuffed. Service was excellent throughout. The entire bill (after tip and tax) came out to about $75, so definitely not something we can do everyday. We ended up having most of the pizza to take home...this type of pizza freezes well, so individually wrapped them to freeze and will enjoy stuffed pizza for a while. read more

My family and I stopped in Saturday morning not long after opening hoping to avoid a crowd. Service was great, our server was super friendly and kept us updated on how much time before our stuffed pizza would be out. It does take 45 minutes to bake which they make sure to let you know. Loved Rance's forever but last week I went in after being away for a month and my usual spinach salad was not near the same. the dressing was not the same and the salad lacked some of the ingredients. It's so hard to find a good Chicago Pizza in CA. We've had Chicago Pizza in Illinois several times and it's the bomb! Our hopes were high as we tried Rance's for the first time. The night we arrived, it was packed since the World Series was going on. We were placed at the last table, located outside. The heaters were turned on for us and it delightfully took the edge off, very comfortable. I didn't realize we arrived at the tail end of happy hour, so that was nice a nice surprise on the bill! We liked the selection of draft beers. My draft dry cider was exactly what I hoped for! We split two salads between us. One salad easily feeds two. I tasted my friend's gluten free pizza and it was tasty, but not sure the $21 price justified it for the size. We also ordered the 14" stuffed pizza. The crust was surprisingly thin (never had it this thin before). It was a different take of a buttery crust, just okay. The biggest surprise was the taste of the seasonings in the sauce. It didn't quite hit the mark. Our pizza didn't quite compare to the several awesome experiences we've had in Chicago. Also be prepared that each topping is $4 each, so our multiple added toppings brought the total to a $50 pizza. Ouch! I was craving a deep dish pan pizza, but unfortunately, Rance's pizza fell way short. Toppings tasted good, but they and the inside of the pizza was only lukewarm even though the pan itself was hot. Waitress never came to check on the pizza, so we ate it because we were hungry. we asked another waiter if the pan pizzas are normally only lukewarm and he said it should be hot but it might have been because of the oven temperature. I wasn't really sure of what that response meant. We also asked if we could move from the bar to a table since it wasn't crowded and it was about an hour and 40 minutes to closing. They said no because it might get crowded and needed the tables to be open. Again, not sure what that meant as there were other open tables and then they started bringing the signs inside. First off, let me get it out that I may be biased here. I've been a fan of Chicago style pizza ever since I had my first slice back in high school so it was easy for me to love Rance's. Second--if your looking for something quick or under an hour--potentially keep looking cause this is not fast food. I was introduced to Rance's by friends who live in Long Beach but we had always enjoyed their pizza as take out. It was good but I always wondered what it would be like fresh from the oven. This past week, I attended a trivia night with some friends and we dined in. Not sure if it is always free seating but that was the situation during our visit. There was no front out house person waiting to greet us and i had to ask the bartender what the seating situation was like. Perhaps a waitlist is only used when tables are full but I can imagine it to be frustrating to come to a restaurant of this sort and not have a front of house person to take names and organize a wait. While first time dining in, I've been to 2nd st. many times and walked by Rance's and seen it packed. So while it didn't take us too long to find a place to sit (about 5-10 minutes), i can't say it was because of the staff--it was because a party of 2 offered to swap tables with us (a party of 6) that we got a seat. Beyond this, the staff was very attentive, checked for refills often and brought out the food nice and hot. They were quick to take orders and bring out drinks. As for the food itself, we had a salad, cheesy breadsticks, and 2 deep dish pizzas. The salad was typical, so no complaints there. The cheese covered breadsticks were cut into small strips so easy to pull apart and share and were made the way I like them--with the cheese slightly over cooked so there is an actual crunchiness to the edges. If you like ooey-gooey and no crunch, it may not be to your liking. The pizzas themselves were great as always. A thick warm layer of tomatoes and sauce over our selected toppings; all sitting on top of a crust that is wet and flavorful on the inside yet crisp and crunchy on the out. I imagine even folks who normally don't eat the crust of regular pizzas will devour this crust. While I can't say I can tell the difference Rance's fresh from the oven or from a box 15 minutes later, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just saying whether eaten to go and dine in, both are great. The deep dish pizzas do take forever to cook (45 min), but as the extended wait time is displayed on the menu next to the deep dish items and reiterated by the staff so it cannot be called a surprise. Anyone who complains about the wait probably also complains about not knowing there are 60 minutes in an hour. The baking time is what it is. Price-wise, I found everything to be within reasonable/typical range for a sit down Chicago-style pizza pub. So no surprises there if you're educated on how much a deep-dish pies normally go for. Last, the ambiance of very high ceilings and a completely open wall patio facing the street gives this place a very appealing and airy feeling. As such, many of the table inside the actual restaurant still have a patio vibe. So in summary, service is good, food is good, have realistic expectations on baking time, and be prepared to hunt for your own table if there isn't a front of house person organizing tables--given a 45 min wait time on a pizza, it may be a while. read more

Delish! I've only had deep dish pizza once in Chicago years ago. From what I can remember, this place is just as good! I came here with 5 coworkers for lunch. It takes ~45 mins for them to make the pizza, so we ordered in advance. Michael took my order over the phone and was also our server when we got there - he was super nice! If you drop in, I'm sure you could order and then walk around 2nd street while waiting for your pizza to be ready. We ordered a pepperoni deep dish (stuffed) and the CSP - both were great! We also got 2 side salads. They're 6 thick slices each, so honestly 1 pizza would've been enough for the 6 of us, but we were happy to take home leftovers because it was so good! The tomatoes on the pizza tasted fresh and the cheese was perfect. The restaurant is casual and spacious. They had many big tables for our group. If you want Chicago deep dish-come here. I've tried a few others that sell Chicago style, they don't even come close. The pies here are heavy and rich. A nice layer of cheese and a buttery crust, topped with a thick tomato sauce and the topping of your choice. It's quite the experience. The sleeper here were the buffalo wings. So delicious!
