Had dinner here with the wife. The decor is ok, nothing eye popping, but nice enough and clean. Started with lettuce wraps and curry puffs. The chicken for the wraps was really well seasoned, the cashews made it come together. The puffs we're good and flakey like wifey likes. I had the spicy duck which was good, some crispy pieces that went down well but the tender bits meshed perfectly with the spices. Wifey had basil fried rice with shrimp which was mad tasty. Went to lunch here with not knowing what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised. We were on our lunch break so didn't get any apps or beverages besides water. I got the pineapple fried rice and my boss got the pad see ew. I loved my dish, I was very flavorful and had the right amount of pineapple. So delicious. My boss really enjoyes her pad see ew and mentioned it was very good. Place is beautifully decorated. It was pretty quite which was nice. The only reason for the 4 stars is despite place being empty there wasn't anyone available to tell us where to sit when we walked in and the server took a while to charge us for the meal because she was distracted. This is such a little gem of a place! There's always a nice mix of diners--young and old, families and couples. The staff are lovely and the food is awesome. Got the beef cashew nut with a Thai tea and my S.O. got the chicken pad Thai. Both were delicious with just the right amount to be filling. The interior was really nice with fancy folded cloths and the service was friendly, great, and attentive. The price was not too bad either. Would definitely come back again. read more

I've been a loyal customer of River Thai for the past two and a half years. Tonight I ordered delivery but didn't receive my entire order. I called to let them know expecting that they'd send someone with the rest of the order. Instead they told me they'd give me the item free next time I order. I politely asked them to send the item or at least refund the amount. They refused and insisted that they would give me a free item next time I ordered. The Holy Grail of Som Tum - Papaya Salad! I found it! Hands down the best (dee tisoop) som tum in the city. Perfect sweet to tangy to spicy to fishy. Perfect bok bok (mortar & pestle smash). Perfect presentation- I ate half of it before I could stop myself and take a pic- lol. Pad Ginger Squid was delish. Squid was tender and perfectly cooked. A twist was added fresh pineapple. My sweety had vegan Pad Thai. He loved it. It was a little sweet for me so I'd ask for a little less sugar in the sauce. What a treat for Hamilton Heights / Washington Heights to have such an authentic and delish Thai restaurant. Yesssszzz Another delish meal Panang Curry with shrimp and Squid. I'd never tried an appetizer here before. I know times are tough, but $6 for an order of pan fried dumplings and there are only 4 dumplings? I guess I should have gone to one of the places for Chinese food where they give you 8 dumplings for $6.95 - and next time I will. Never again River Thai. You're off my list of places for takeout. My daughter and I went to this restaurant today for lunch..very nice place. Love the decor. The waitress was helpful and friendly. For starters I ate the vegetable steamed dumplings. They were so tender and delicious. My daughter ordered the pineapple fried rice, no meat. And I had the fried rice with shrimp, great portions. We really enjoyed our food. The duck salad was superb. Very good were the shrimp summer rolls and crabmeat fried rice--a ton of crabmeat, btw. The duck gra prow entree was good, but I admit that I've had better -- to be fair, we've been fortunate to eat at some of the best eateries in Bangkok, so restaurants like this have to contend with strong competition. I got the worst food poisoning of my life from this place. Vomiting, diarrhea that lasted several days, loss of appetite.. the works. I was the only person out of the group of 7 I was in who felt this sick, but I was also the only person that got the tofu pad thai. read more

I placed an order for delivery today and was told by the friendly woman on the phone that the food would arrive within 30 minutes. After 45 minutes, I called the restaurant to follow up on the status as I hadn't received the food. The woman, again very friendly, apologized and informed that a delivery person had left 5 minutes earlier with the food. The restaurant is 2.5 blocks away from my location. TWO BLOCKS. 25 minutes after that call, still no food. I called the restaurant a third time and was told that the delivery guy had 6 deliveries to which I responded that I was less than 3 blocks away from the restaurant and that I would think they would prioritize delivery based on times orders were placed. That isn't the case. 1.5 hrs later, I cancelled the order. Here's a tip River Thai: do not commit to customers a delivery time if you can't keep to that commitment. Moreover, if you are backed up or unable to deliver within reasonable timing, BE HONEST with your customers. Never again. read more

I have dining to hear many times, and on tonight my husband went inside of the restaurant with our daughter because she needed to use the bathroom badly. Regardless of us being repeat customers and my daughter feeling extremely sick she was told she could not go use the bathroom. How can you tell an (08) eight-year-old child that they cannot use the restroom especially when the restaurant was 100% empty/completely free of any customers at all. I am happy to report that River Thai didn't disappoint. My expectation was high as I head from neighbor Facebook group that Indian restaurant(which is my favorite spot) next door was opening this Thai joint. Dishes were authentic and fresh(we had a squid dish and a bowl of clear noodle soup due to my kid's company... she only eats plain sadly). I hope to review more of my favorite classic dishes like green curry or Tom Yum soup near future. Servers were nice. The price is not cheap, but the portion is pretty big. It looks like they have lunch special options, so that would be a good place to try many dishes. I am always excited to see new restaurants opening up, especially on Amstedam. Good was great. Just such intense service that I don't remember how many people came to my table to ask me how was the food. It became annoying. I could t enjoy the food because someone kept coming to the table to check on us and mind you the culture clash was very obvious. I don't like it when people stand right over your food and talk while I'm eating. Again the food was great well season and great portions, but since it's a small place and the front of the restaurant is fully glassed in doors. Your literally sitting eating with delivery drivers staring at you while you eat through the window. Every passerby can what you eat. It would be a good idea to tint the windows. read more

Came to River Thai with my dad and son to celebrate my dads last night in NY. I frequent the Indian restaurant next door, owned by these brothers at least twice a week so I was really excited to try their Thai! We ordered all vegetarian dishes. The pad ginger with tofu & veggies was amazing, the red curry with tofu and veggies was awesome with just the right amount of spice. My son had the veggie fried rice and we also had the desserts which were equally delicious! The vanilla fried ice cream and the pumpkin custard will be ordered again by us!!! Come enjoy this amazing restaurant in your own neighborhood! I have been waiting for the entire 15 years I have lived here for restaurants like this to appear.
