I always order the Original which consists of breast and thigh with skin. The thigh with skin is nice but the breast meat tends to be a tad dry. The flavorful sauce certainly helps. The broth is very flavorful and soothing to drink. This location is smaller and less nice looking compared with the downtown locations but the food quality is exactly the same. I was working in the area, and searched on yelp to take a quick lunch. I came across Rooster & Rice and remember when I had it in SF. I didn't know they had a location here, but decided to try it out. This is a small location, few tables. They have a short and simple menu. You can chose between white or brown rice, and they also have a vegetarian option which is awesome. I went with the chicken and brown rice. You get a good amount of food overall. The chicken was fresh, tender and soft. I'm not a huge fan of breast meat because it could be rough sometimes, but it's amazing here. Brown rice is brown rice, healthier option. The sauce that comes with the plate is a combination of ginger, soy sauce and spices I believe. I could be completely off but it's delicious with the chicken and rice. The punch of flavor comes from the fermented soy bean sauce. Talk about the perfect combo of salty, sweet and spicy. The pungent mix of garlic, ginger, fermented beans, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce and chilies creates an umami explosion on the palate. For even more flavor, add the sriracha and cilantro sauces available at the self-service bar. The extra side of poached egg was almost perfectly cooked. My Thai friends informed me that Khao Mun Gai translates to chicken oily rice. Didn't care for the texture of the rice which wasn't oily but was rather gummy. They also have fried chicken skin as a side for $4. I have been coming here whenever I ran errands around the area and there is a happy lemon really close by so thats a plus. Food is prepared really quick so not much of a wait unless its lunch hour where the line can get pretty long and there is barely any room to move around inside the restaurant since the place is fairly small with a few tables inside and two small tables outside. Most people aren't even home from work or after school activities yet. I can only eat here when I work from home or take the day off. The food is pretty darn good. They have 3 plates on the menu. The poached chicken with white rice was yummy. Chicken was cooked perfectly, and tender with a fork. Dip it in the thai sauce before eating, and yum! Cucumbers on the side and some parsley on top round out the plate, and all in a compostable container which is supposed to degrade into soil within 90 days. The other item on the menu is, well, chicken and brown rice. The third item is a veggie dish. I didn't pay attention to this since I'm a meat-a-tarian. I've heard of Rooster & Rice from their SF locations, but this was the first time I knew of a location in the East Bay! The place itself is pretty small, but they do have 4-5 small tables if you want to sit down for your meal. They have 3 menu options - both my boyfriend and I ordered their signature #1, which comes with chicken breast and thigh (with skin), white rice, and their delicious ginger sauce. All meals also come with a hot chicken soup, which pairs perfectly with the chicken and rice. I'm not usually one who enjoys chicken skin, but it didn't bother me at Rooster & Rice because the chicken was cleaned and cut very well. The rice was fluffy, and the sauce is a MUST!! I think the signature dish (chicken/rice with a side of soup) is about $10.95. They also offer a breast only, no-skin option with brown rice for a couple dollars more, and a vegetarian option. Rooster & Rice is almost like a fast-food style restaurant, just order and pay, and then wait for your order to be called. Utensils, napkins, and extra sauces are all self serve. There was habanero and Thai sriracha. I got the habanero one cuz I like it spicy. The dish came with some cucumbers as well, this added a nice texture. The soft boiled egg was cooked to perfection! Added a nice level of flavor to the dish. The ginger soy sauce and the egg together made a great sauce for the chicken. They also gave a chicken broth on the side, very light and soothing. I was so excited to finally try Rooster and Rice because it was all my cousin raved about when she goes to eat in SF. My mom and I saw that one had opened in Pleasanton and went to try it. We ordered number one with extra chicken and an egg and it came pretty quickly. The place is quite small but we were able to get a table before the lunch rush came in. The chicken was pretty good, it was very tender and almost melts in your mouth. Comparable to the chicken rice from Malaysia! I wish the rice was a little more fragrant but it was still very good. Their rice was undercooked, it was hard and flavorless, so I ended up pouring some broth that came with the combo over it. I added an egg it was cold! It must not have been freshly made, I've never had a "pre-poached" egg before, super strange! The sauce was weird too. My question: if it looks like Hainanese chicken rice and is presented like Hainanese chicken rice, is it Hainanese chicken rice? Hainanese chicken rice requires the right preparation and the right ingredients. It's poached chicken, served with the skin, over a bed of fragrant white rice, garnished with cilantro and a side of chili sauce, cucumber slices, and lightly flavored broth. And that's pretty much the description on Rooster Rice's web site. But this is NOT Hainanese chicken rice. And, when I ate their chicken rice, I had to check their web site again and, sure enough, "Hainan" does not appear anywhere on it. So it's almost like it's kind of trying to be Hainanese chicken rice, but they're aware that it is not, so they're not actually calling it that. So it's just chicken and rice, with a sauce. And it's $13. Maybe I'm totally off on this. Maybe there's a variety of chicken rice that is exactly like this; similar to the Hainan style but lacking the flavored rice and with a soy-based chili sauce. But it seems very coincidental. And, if this is just this particular restaurant's style of making chicken rice, there may be those who love it, but I'm just not on board. But you can't please everyone. read more

I knew about Rooster and Rice in SF when I worked nearby. The traditional chicken rice, especially with dark meat, is good and the staff are nice. They also sell fried chicken skin. That location was my go to place long before the shelter-in-place order due to COVID-19. I found out about their Pleasanton location and was expecting the same great food and service. Unfortunately, it is not. When I tried to order chicken rice with dark meat, they told me they "do not have enough". At first I thought they ran out, but after a few times of ordering on other days, they kept saying the same thing. Finally, when I went there, I asked them why I cannot place more than x orders of chicken and rice with dark meat? The staff was rude and told me something along the line of "we only have limited number". What is that supposed to mean? If they ran out, I understand. But they put a limit on certain items without advertising that? That is like saying you can only buy two burger with cheese or two tacos with sour cream because they "don't have enough". The SF location never have this restriction, so I am puzzled. If this location kept running out, then why not make more? Otherwise, put a notice that say "Limit x number for dark meat per order". In this kind of business, you can look at your past sales and adjust your inventory accordingly. Given the COVID-19 global pandemic, where customers' option for dining in is limited, I would NOT recommend going to this location because you will be disappointed that you CANNOT order what you WANT. TIPS: The chicken rice is very similar to Hainan Chicken rice, a staple of Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine. So if you are craving similar chicken rice in the Pleasanton area, go to any Malaysian / Singaporean restaurantand you can get the same thing. read more
