I'm obsessed with this place. It had been on my list for quite some time and I was truly impressed overall. My almost two year old son and husband joined me for a weekday lunch and it was already hustling and bustling at noon on the dot. We waited just a few minutes to be seated and were greeted by a friendly and attentive server. I ordered the duck BLT--need I say more? The name in itself. It was beyond scrumptious...fresh local ingredients, crispy bread, piping HOT and just the right size potion for the price. Hubby had a burger and son had the PB&J--both were gone within minutes so I'm assuming they were good?! I sipped on a local cider that I've never heard of or seen before so that was exciting! I've NEVER had better butter than at roots!! It's mixed with some sort of honey and I LOVE it! The food is amazing, you can tell that a lot of love and thought went into it and it changes seasonally. Thursday nights are Byo which is a great option. The outdoor area is so adorable but the inside is just as great. They also have an amazing breakfast/brunch with $5 mimosas and bloodys on sundays...and boy do they know how to garnish! Definitely one of the coolest places in WC. 3rd time is a charm but every other visit I have tried something new and have loved every dish! The coffee is smooth and inviting in a homey coffee cup that could be a vintage 80's mug or a classic diner cup. My WCU student asks to go there for brunch every time I visit and we love having coffee talk and delicious food. The breakfast grilled cheese is an event on a plate and today they made gluten free French Toast for my son that made him smile and almost lick the plate. I had a bean soup special but it didn't have enough beans in it, whoever ladled it out got too much broth. After that a quiche which was very good, nice crust and a little greens on the side. Roots is one of those places that you tell a friend "Oh I went to Roots for breakfast yesterday" and they are always like OMG YES I LOVE THAT PLACE. You'll love it too. It's the perfect spot for the environmentally conscious, the hipster, the brunch fanatic, and you... the person who just wants a good meal. Some reviews complain of Roots being a little overpriced... I find that it's right on target with the other breakfast/brunch/lunch places in town. There are so many amazing things about Roots. Starting with the perfectly cozy/cool vibe that you get while you're there. It's refined enough that your parents from out of town will appreciate, and trendy enough that your sorority sister or your sort-of-serious date will enjoy. The food is also pretty spot on, and its nice to know that everything possible is locally and sustainably sourced. It's nice that there's a little something on the menu for everyone, and its all pretty solid. My only beef with Roots is that sometimes the experience is a little inconsistent. One day you'll get the farmer's omelette and it will blow your mind, and sometimes you find yourself picking off your neighbor's plate for some more cheese. Sometimes you eat the herbed potatos and they are God's gift on a plate... and other times you think to yourself that they don't taste the same as they used to. Sometimes service is stellar! Other times you wait an hour to be seated in a hot corner of the restaurant and wait 15 extra minutes for your waiter to appear. I should say that for me, Roots is definitely one of the top 3 breakfast/brunch places in town. If you're willing to wait for a seat, its definitely the most comfortable to sit, drink mimosas, and enjoy a quality meal that everyone will like. You just have to have a little patience sometimes, but its worth it. I should also mention that a few years ago I had dinner at Roots. Their dinners are a little pricey, but are several courses and that meal was one of the best I've had in my life. If you have a little extra change, make a reservation. This is a little piece of the city right in the heart of West Chester!!! The staff is so friendly, and the environment is very clean and "cool" with local art and warm colors. The food is amazing!!! To be honest, I found this place slightly overrated. The atmosphere is what definitely draws you in. It's quaint, cute, the owners mom talked to us enthusiastically and with a great deal of passion, and those wooden table tops seal the deal. But alas, I'm here for food and coffee refills. Both not top notch. First of all, I drink my coffee waay too fast (and black) when I'm freezing. Aka this 20 degree morning. So that's not a huge issue to me that the waiter couldn't keep up. What was lacking was the food to price ratio. I ordered the pork belly omelette, mostly because I recently took a bite of such a taco, and it was incredible. Here, it was far too chewy, and I couldn't really enjoy it. The herbed potatoes (hash browns, homefries. Whatever) were phenomenal. Crispy, herby, delicious. And I'm not a potato fan honestly so there's a bonus point there in my book. My friends French toast was nothing fancy, however. I did enjoy the bee pollen addition on the whipped cream, first time trying it actually, and bees are my specialty. But ultimately I prefer very fluffy bread for my frenchie bread, and it came off as much too simple for me. Overall, the food was okay, but not for the price. I'll keep looking for my favorite West Chester breaky spot. read more

Placed an order today for the vegetable omelette, I've done this before and ask them to switch out the cheddar cheese for goat cheese, was very specific as to why. I can't digest because of dairy issues. It was delivered with American cheese not goat cheese. Called the restaurant and was promptly informed that I needed to bring back the omelette that I had and come and pick up the new omelette. I reminded the woman on the phone that I paid for delivery and why should I be coming and picking up the omelette and returning it when they should be sending someone to do it. Just came here the other night with my mom for the 1st time and instantly fell in love. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, and although small not uncomfortable. Karol our waiter was wonderful. He was quick, throughly went over the menu and made the perfect Bloody Mary that was just the right amount of spice. I live that the menu changes which will be grey when we come back. Wife and I stopped in for breakfast the other day. First time diners. Food was unique. In other words, not your standard bacon and eggs. I had the corn beef hash and my wife the mushroom omelette. The hash consisted of large chunks of corn beef, potatoes, onions and peppers, not the typical finely mixed version I'm used to. The omelette had a thick coating of mushroom gravy over the top. Roots is a very small brunch location it probably seats at least 20 people so I'm sure if you come early you may be waiting a while but it's worth the wait. There are parking garages everywhere & if you go on Sunday's it's free. It was very easy to find & it is pretty hipster. I am a vegetarian so I was happy to see they had more than one option available. I wanted to try the French Toast because in every picture it looked amazing. It was quite delicious. They have a pretty decent beer selection I was shocked to see some decent IPA's. I will be coming back for brunch to try the other vegetarian options on the menu! read more

Usually it's packed on Sundays but when I went this past weekend we only had to wait 10 minutes--I'm guessing since all the college students have gone home for winter break. It's a cozy, small, organic, farm-to-table restaurant that only uses local ingredients. Our waiter was Carl, super-friendly and gave great suggestions. Per his recommendation, I ordered the apple cider mimosa. Expensive at $10 but still tasty. The food was great but I'm giving only 4 stars because I had ordered the taste two combo--the turkey bacon sandwich and the peach salad (on the menu, it's called "peach salad)." When my salad came out, there were no peaches in it whatsoever. When I asked Carl if I had gotten the correct dish since there were exactly 0 peaches in my salad, he said that he had forgotten to mention that since peaches are no longer in season, they substitute apples in that salad. Had I known, I wouldn't have picked that salad... when the main item of a certain dish is missing altogether, and when that's the name of that entrée on the menu, the customer should really be told that what they've ordered is not at all what they're going to get. read more

I can't believe I've been taking graduate courses nearby for four semesters and I just discovered this place. I wanted something simple -- so I ordered scrambled eggs with taters and sourdough toast. The most overrated place I've found in the area. I think many reviewers give it far too much credit for a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. But lets be real, we are here for food. And that's what comes out, bland & uninteresting food. Sure it will have fancy titles, but little thought is given to the combinations of flavors. If you are in the breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner mood, Roots will not disappoint. I've been going since I've moved to west Chester nearly two years ago and it is still my favorite restaurant. If you have the opportunity to have Shannon as a server, consider yourself extremely fortunate. She is by far one of my favorite servers in town. You ask for a recommendation and she never disappoints. I would recommend the pork belly Benedict or the vegan scramble for breakfast, depending on the dinner menu I would recommend specials, they are limited so order up.
