On a recent visit, I ordered 12 Duck Fat Fried Chicken Wings & Duck Fat Fries. They told me it would take about 10 minutes for my order to be ready so I wandered around a bit and when I came back at that mark my food was indeed ready....

When you order the wings, you get the entire wing - not just drums and flats - so 12 pieces for $26 seemed like a fair price to us. The wings were fried to perfection, so the meat easily came off the bone with very little if any "residual meat" not bitten off. The wings don't come sauced and don't have any deep flavor on their own so you will need to rely on their packaged sauces to come through on that. My favorite sauce was their West Indies Hot Sauce. Although I was expecting a bigger kick of heat than it offered, I enjoyed the flavor. The Honey Mustard and Sweet & Spicy BBQ sauces were fine, but nothing revolutionary. The fries, too, were satisfying - they were perfectly crispy but not heavy or greasy. Again, no flavor punch but a good fry, nonetheless. I'll look forward to trying some of their other items - such as their sandwiches - the next time we're here.

I'm generally not a chicken sandwich kind of girl, but this was everything. Each individual component was perfectly seasoned. The chicken was cooked to perfection, not dry at all. The sweet potato bun was a nice touch, though I didn't get a ton of sweet potato flavor, but the s of it all...the homemade honey mustard and sweet tea. Chef TD is everything. I'll definitely be back.

Came here for lunch one day during work. It's in Legacy Hall so a lot of other food options around as well and can get busy for lunch. When I walked up, the person taking my order was very short with me and not friendly at all so was a little worried at that point. I got the chicken strip combo which comes with four chicken strips, fries, a dipping sauce, and a drink. It was around $15 so a decent price for the amount of food. All the food is said to be fried in duck fat. Having cooked with duck fat before, I did not get that flavor coming through at all. The chicken strips were still good and I enjoyed the flavor of them very much. I got the hot sauce for dipping and it was really good. The fries on the other hand were bland and nothing special. If I go back, I would just get the chicken and sauce and avoid the fries.

The restaurant did not live up to the hype for me. I was so excited to try it but a resounding no for me. The chicken was greasy and that is putting it mildly. The chicken was very dark as well. The good note is the mac and cheese was awesome as well as the fries. The mgr at first asked us how was it and I lied and said fine. Then I said to my hubby let me tell her the truth. She thanked me for being honest and she appreciated me. I suggested maybe the oil was old. She checked it and suggested maybe she fried it too long. With that said she refunded our money and apologized again. She even offered to fry us more chicken and we were like no thanks ok.

The meat is incredibly juicy and tender, with that irresistible melt-in-your-mouth quality. It's like chicken on a whole new level, where the duck fat brings a deep, luxurious flavor that takes it from great to "I need more right now." Take home message: so glad chef Tiffany Derry is making her presence known in Dallas. Can't wait until she opens in DeSoto!! Her crispy, flavorful masterpiece will have you coming back for seconds (and thirds). Absolute perfection on a plate!

I was in town visiting and this was a spot I bookmarked to visit. Chicken fried in duck fat, how could you go wrong with that?! Sad to say I was HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED! NO FLAVOR!!!! The chicken itself was fried perfectly with a nice crunch that came out piping hot, but the flavor wasn't there . The fries were also unseasoned and needed every bit of the ranch dressing. If they would just seasoned the darn chicken it would've been an easy 5 star rating.

I've been to Tiffany's Italian restaurant, which was underwhelming. However, I have heard that her fried chicken is amazing and a must try. Met a friend for dinner at Legacy Hall. It's a weeknight. So, the Hall wasn't too crowded or busy. I was able to walk right up and order. The gentleman at the counter that took my order was nice and said that it would take 10-15 minutes for my order to be ready. My friend already had her dinner. I hoped it would be with the wait. I walked over at approximately the time my order was to be ready and waited. Everything was served hot and fresh off the fryer. For freshly fried chicken, it was not soggy or greasy - but it was also not crunchy like one would expect fried chicken to be. Instead the outer part of the chicken was dry, not as bad as leather but dry. The inside was moist. Not much seasoning at all. It absolutely needed the sweet and hot bbq sauce. The fries were another story. They were perfectly cooked, crispy, and delicious. I honestly loved those fries. Overall, it was underwhelming. Honestly am kicking myself for not going to another place there to eat.

OMG!!! I came for the chicken sandwich and ended up pairing the chicken sandwich, with the fried fish sandwich as well. It's always a win for me, when a chicken sandwich is made from a piece of chicken thigh than breast. The chicken was moist and season perfectly. The breading was super crispy, the same can be said about the fried catfish sandwich. The seasoning, and the batter made this fish sandwich.

That was a pretty good chicken sandwich but I probably wouldn't go back. I'm teetering between 3 and 4 stars. It was a nice sized breast with tasty toppings. However, most of the seasoning was muted. I really had to concentrate to get the flavors and the spice. The service leaves a lot to be desired. The woman at the cash register had little personality. The lady in front of me had ordered a fish sandwich without tartar sauce. So, they disassembled her sandwich at the counter and rebuilt it on a new bun. I felt bad for her. When I came back for my chicken (you have to wait because it's cooked to order), I felt bad for the person whose fries were just sitting on the tray on the counter getting cold. Then I realized that they were mine. Whomp whomp!

I have had their fried chicken before but their fish sandwich was absolutely delicious! It's inside the Legacy Food Hall. The service is always outstanding and I love the food presentation. Every vegetable was nicely placed on the sandwich and the sauce was not too much. The fries were good, just fries fried in duck fat. Whenever I go back to the Legacy Food Hall, I'm getting this sandwich every time!

I had the six piece wings and mac and cheese. The wings were nicely seasoned and fried, just how I like them. I wasn't too fond of the mac and cheese, but it was fair. Edit for update! As expected, full 5 stars when I got to return and try them fresh. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it is not disappointing in any way. It is absolutely massive and so full of flavor. The chicken is tender and juicy and tastes incredible. The makeup of the sandwich itself is a great balance. I only wish they had another location so that I didn't have to brave where they are currently. It's worth it, though. ------------------- I had this at a catered event and wow. If the food was this good after sitting out in a corporate setting, I can only imagine how good it is fresh. I look forward to going back and getting something fresh. I wanted to leave this review as a way to remind myself to head back. I am certain this will be turned into a 5 star review when I return. I'll be sure to grab a great picture, too. Incredible fried chicken absolutely packed with flavor through and through. Not just the breading, but the meat itself is obviously very well taken care of. Yum!!

The chicken wings and fries were absolutely amazing. They had great flavor, and texture to them and were made great! The nuggets were small and not as flavorful. Overall, the food was really good I did have a very negative experience interacting with the person who worked the front counter who was extremely rude, and disrespectful. Was not friendly when taking my order, which is fine but gave me an extremely hard time when I asked for the sauce that was included with the chicken nuggets I ordered. Told me, I had to ask for it beforehand when ordering even though she never asked me if I wanted sauces and I don't know of any restaurant that expects this when it says the sauce is included with the meal I ordered. She literally yelled at me when I politely asked again apologizing that I did not know that and that it says on the menu it's included. She never ended up giving me the cluckin sauce, and I just gave up as I was tired of being chastised and disrespected over a very trivial thing. It is to bad because the food was really good, and I hope that the restaurant doesn't lose business when they have a quality product because they have their employees acting very mean and hostile towards customers.

This is our second time having Roots Chicken Shack. The food is great, but the service is always awful. We have had two different cashiers and both times they were demeaning, and rude. We ordered to go, and had been notified our food was ready. When I got there the food was sitting under a lamp, I told the guy the name, without checking the ticket he said it wasn't ready. I waited for 10minutes, before the cook had to tell the guy it was ready. Then the cashier proceeded to say this was my fault for selecting dine in. I've worked in the food industry, and even if the customer is wrong they are right. I am not the only one I watched the cashier do the same to another lady approached the counter for her online order, and again without checking the guy said it was ready. Sad, because I love to support a black woman owned business, but that's hard to do when the service is awful. read more

Absolutely the worst! When trying to order the cashier would not explain anything. When asking the spice level of the sauce he's response was mango habanero, I tried asking another employee to which he coached him to say the same response. I responded with that is not explaining the spice level and if he could explain go ahead and cancel my order. The lack of respect for the company and their patron is unfortunate. read more

I love that I can find a good piece of fried chicken near Frisco! I tend to ask for my wings to be fried extra crispy so that I can ensure I get that nice crunch every time. I also love the size of the wings. I think America has gotten conditioned to eating those big jumbo hormone pumped wings. These wings are normal and I'm okay with that! I don't need a Hulk Hogan mustache from eating hormone filled wings! The duck fat fries were okay, nothing to write home about. Now the Kool-aids and teas!!!!! They are so good, and she adds a little herbal twist to them which I love. My only issue is some days the wings are seasoned better than others. I'm looking forward to trying the sandwich next! read more

Like most of the places in Legacy Food Hall, I did not expect much from this spot. However, I was blown away of how good the chicken was. Gosh! I ordered three wings, but I ended up getting four. With the wings came three sauces, in which I got honey mustard, ranch, and BBQ sauce. The chicken was juicy, perfectly fried, and very flavorful. They were made to order, so I had to wait a few minutes before I can munch on the wings. I guess the duck fat really makes a difference! Also, the price is really good for only $7! The rest of the menu includes sandos as well as chicken tenders. They also offer drinks like kool aid and teas, which I thought was very cool. I would like to try their tenders one day. The staff was pretty friendly and they were working hard to get a lot of orders in during the time I went. Overall, this is a solid fried chicken spot at Legacy Food Hall and is now one of my favorites. Enjoy! read more

Quality chicken at a very high price! I loved the fried chicken and fries at roots. However, it's a bit pricey. I think if I was at home in DC I may expect the price tag, (plus organic and free range, etc) but Dallas has really good fried chicken spots at half the roots price. If I'm in Dallas and I decide to go to the food hall in legacy shops in the mood for chicken, I would go again. read more

Great food!!! Tenders are fresh and tasty but they are to small. This was the first time here and the service was friendly and prompt. I live my life to eat wings and these, dipped in some ranch, made me happy to be alive. My 7 year old ate the tenders with gusto, which never happens. I was convinced she lives off kraft Mac and cheese and mozzarella sticks but i was wrong. My moms favorite dessert is banana pudding and she ate this ALL without letting me try it but i can't be mad bc she enjoyed it so much. We will be back!! read more

I eat here atleast 3 times a week all my friends make fun of me for it but the food really is THAT GOOD!!!!! The chicken strips are my favorite and I always get the West Indies , ranch, and honey mustard sauces. They also have the best banana pudding I have EVER had!!! Support black businesses. read more

Roots Chicken Shak has the best chicken & fries that I've ever tasted! I went to have lunch with my boyfriend after some reccomendations and Roots Chicken Shak did not disappoint! We orderes the tenders, duck fat fried wings, and some fries and we both agreed that it was the best chicken we've ever had! The crispy tenders are bomb!! The customer service was amazing. I love the fact that they give you 3 sauces with the tenders is such a great idea because you may not want honey mustard for all your chicken tenders. I called in and the tenders were hot when I got them! Anytime you order food, you want it to be hot, I can't say enough great things about this place. I wanted something different than what I would get at a regular fast food restaurant and that's exactly what I got! read more

Roots Chicken Shak continues to pop up in one of my social media groups highlighting black owned businesses in my area. I was familiar with the area it was in but had never been. This restaurant is located in Legacy Hall which is a large 4 story building with tons of eatery restaurants packed in. The line was a bit long but not bad. The presentation was amazing. I had the duck fat wings with fries. Hands down best wings I've tried in the area. The meal selection came with 3 sauces. I am fairly basic so I had bbq and ranch which were delicious. My husband had a chicken sandwich and loved it. It was gone too fast for me to identify which one. The chicken was crispy but not too much breading. We will be back. read more

My boyfriend and I wanted to support a local black restaurant and were in the mood for fried chicken so we tried this place out. Best decision ever! I got the 3 piece Duck Fat Fried Chicken which was amazinggg and so were the Duck Fat Fries too! He got the Big Bird which was nice and flavorful as well. We will definitely be back! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 was the fact that they were super busy during the time that we came (Thursday evening) and our order was incorrect initially (and we had already waited pretty long for that), but when we brought it back they did fix it - it just took a little bit of time for them to get everything back to us. read more

I decided to stop in for lunch and was throughly impressed with my food for the most part. I ordered the duck fat fried chicken with an order of fries. I will say that though the fries were cooked in duck fat I wasn't as impressed with them as was I my chicken. My chicken was amazing!!! It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short.

The beef played a great supporting role to elevate the dish without making it all about itself. 8.5/10 The Number 1 rice noodles in soup was powerful without being indulgent. The flavors hit hot and hard but still savory and tastefully diverse. Jin recommended it as the noodles have a very pleasant chew and had a diverse plating with bok choy, pickled mustard, and an egg to top it off. 8.5/10 Overall I enjoyed this place completely and will 100% return when I come back to Texas.

Unfortunately, the customer service left a lot to be desired. The lady at the register was not courteous and seemed to have an attitude, which made for an unpleasant experience. What disappointed me most was their military discount policy. A few weeks ago, I visited on a Saturday and my military service was honored. However, during this visit I was told that military discounts are only given on Mondays. As a veteran, that was frustrating and confusing. If you're going to promote being veteran-owned and supporting veterans, that support should be consistent and clearly communicated. It was fresh and flaky, seasoned to perfection, and paired with their tartar sauce, was delicious. Highly recommend. The chicken fingers were good and not any major complaints just standard. Seasoned well and easily enjoyable. The Mac n Cheese was highly disappointing and can't recommend it. Might have been an off day but wasn't my style. The gumbo was good. Just your basic gumbo but you definitely need the hot sauce because it had no heat to it and I like mine a little more on the spicy side. Overall, I definitely recommend checking them out. They have some good offerings and glad to see a soul food style place in Plano.
