Solid 3.5, just inches from a 4; what made me stay south and go with a 3 star was their execution. The place provides tremendous value and everything we ordered was served big boy size. So, considering the price you would be paying and the quality of the food, I would choose this restaurant over an Outback or another national chain that is slinging steak on the menu. If anything, I would liken this spot to a good roadside diner; their flavors are more subdue to make it palatable to the masses so its easier to satisfy an empty stomach rather then upset it. A good example to illustrate my perspective is the french onion soup, as a side order the serving was very large and feature a nice gooey cheese topping. Visually, it was pretty as it landed on the table. But, when you dig in, you will notice it was very plain ..not offensive, just plain. There wasn't depth in the soup and the crouton under the cheese was not toasted enough so it looked like a sad piece of wonder bread soaked in brown gravy. To be fair, it was palatable and served as a side. Everything else on our order followed the same tone as the french onion soup. I can see the the freshness and quality of the ingredients, but each item lacked the oomph of a better sear, stronger crust, or an extra dash of seasoning. It puts me in that precarious place where I want to like this spot because it can be such a gem of a restaurant with its decor and solid ingredients, but the kitchen seems to be very timid in their execution to make a proper impression. I can comfortable say that I would come back if I was hungry and wanted to get away from the busy casino atmosphere of a hotel restaurant when visiting Reno. Because, this restaurant is cool, with a laid back western theme that feels like a Texas restaurant bar. There is a lot of western boots and cowboy kitsch to make it a fun place to meet up with a large group to drink and grab a bite; it offers plenty of background visuals for the selfie opps. Note: a good example of menu value at this place is the steak. The ribeye & NY was $26 for a large 16oz cut; it comes with 2 sides & bread. Great food and drinks! Long wait though. Made reservations for 7pm on Saturday night for 5 of us, was finally seated at 8pm in a table that was to small for us. Hostess said sorry but can't do anything. Talked to manager Todd, told him the problem and he remedied the situation quickly. We all ordered appetizers, steaks and drinks. My husband and I went over around 9:30 pm for a late dinner. Our server Chris was great and attentive. I was a little crabby to start because when we walked in and sat down at the bar I feel like it took a few minutes for someone to notice that we were there. My husband actually brought over out menus. Anyways, I got the bacon & cheese fries and they were AMAZING, I'm super picky and these are some of the best I have had. The ranch is thick and creamy not watery which I also loved. The portion was very generous and not lacking in cheese or bacon. My husband got something with blue cheese he let me have a bite of and it was heavenly! I am very excited to come back again and try some of the other food they offer. First time here and I loved the sourdough bread you get as a appetizer! I order the 6 oz steak with the bbq ribs! I loved loved loved the ribs! Now the service, we waited 20 minutes for a seat and almost 15 for someone to take our drink and meal order so much so that we ordered drinks, appetizers, and meal all at once. Server never came back to ask if I wanted a second beer. I had to ask someone else for a soda and was never asked if I wanted a refill and that's one of my pet peeves because I have to drink while I eat or I feel like I'm chocking!!! I'm really disappointed. It was my first time there for a long awaited date night, and nothing arrived looking good or tasting right. My beer was good and their selection was great. The place is cute and I really wanted to like it since we were finally taking a long awaited break from Tahoe, and I had been craving steak for a few weeks now. The woman behind us had sent her fries back and gotten them remade before a lot of our dishes were served and we were worried it wasn't a good sign. We both ordered the browning onion and split mushrooms as a side. I ordered the sirloin with Gorgonzola topping, a garden salad, and a jacketed potato. My salad was swimming in dressing, so upon eating it I was a little grossed out. My steak arrived looking good and cooked perfectly. The jacketed potatoes tasted sweet. The plates were incredibly messy with grease and burns splattered all over them, and the browning onion wasn't cut through so it kept falling apart. It wasn't crispy either. The mushrooms were good though, I'd eat them again. Really sad cause we spent close to $100 on our food and both of us left disappointed. Even the bread is meh. If you want a good steakhouse in Reno on a budget, just stick to Texas Roadhouse for now. read more

This is a great steakhouse. I got the ribeye, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The steak was super juicy and tender. Just delicious. When you get sides, make sure to get the garlic mash potatoes. They are served with white gravy which is incredible. I liked the fact that the manager came by to ask how our meal was. Great management and customer service always sets a business apart from their competitors in my opinion. The drinks are ok. They are a little on the sweet side for my liking. However, they had a decent selection of whiskey, which is right up my alley. They also serve a nice bread roll and butter to start your meal. I wanted to go to the Rib Cookoff today. At least I planned on going right after having my brakes checked, only to find out I'd be stuck there for hours because of the rotors blah, blah. Thankfully Ruby River was a short walk away. What a great way to spend idle time. So much better then sitting in a noisy waiting area for hours. I got a half rack of their yummy ribs. Bonus, I know I didn't pay as much for these as I would have at the Rib Cookoff, plus I got a sweet potato and a garden salad (included). I relaxed in an air conditioned restaurant too. I'm not saying that the rib cookoff isn't all that, but when things don't go my way I make lemon aide out of lemons. My server was Taylor and she was all smiles and giggles. Dined here for the first time with four friends and while the food was just average, everything else left a lot to be desired. Four of us ordered steaks (all different sizes and cuts and doneness), and they completely messed up two of them so they had to be sent back. The server didn't seem to believe us when we told her of the problem, and she went back to the kitchen to confirm the mistake or something. Then she came back a few minutes later and took our steaks back--why didn't she just do this the first time??? It was just weird. Mine was bloody rare (when I ordered well) and my friend's was well (they ordered medium rare) so it doesn't take a genius to figure out what happened. So we waited. And watched our friends just about finish their meals by the time our steaks were brought back (approx. 25 mins). This time mine was actually not bloody, so I dove in. Second bite was mostly gristle, and unfortunately I found quite a bit more before I finally gave up trying to find a piece that wouldn't end up in my napkin. Asparagus was undercooked and the only edible portion were the very tips. Baked potato was the only bright spot in my meal. Probably will not try again the next time I'm in Reno. read more

He entered the establishment and informed the rather fetching young lady who met him at the door that he'd be dining alone and would prefer a seat at the bar, which was all but empty. His one-on-one session with the lovely barmaid (who's name he missed, as he didn't want to appear to be glaring at her amazing curves while searching for a name tag) started with her presenting a menu and asking his drink of choice. "Ice Tea" he proclaimed! And she purred "Would you like bread"? Oh yes, he'd LOVE some fresh, hot, bread! After reviewing the menu, LaMigra debated. Porterhouse? Ribeye? Porterhouse? Ribeye? The lovely young lady returned with bread and inquired "Are you ready to order"? "Yes! He'll take the Porterhouse, medium rare" said as he points to the colorful photo strategically located near the middle of the page. "What two sides would you like"? He doesn't care, use your best judgement, as those are secondary concerns after the steak! She returned a short time with the food and a refill for his ice tea. I always come here to eat when I'm in town. Let me tell yah, "It was not how I remember it." To pay $25+ for a steak dinner, eat it in a hot booth, and have my rib eye steak dry when cooked to medium. Not very good. My server was awesome and was on point with her customer service. Positives first: steaks were cooked perfectly, complimentary bread, and probably the best Caesar salad I've ever had. My only food complaint was the baked potato; 2 of the 3 of ours were hard. Now the negative: the service. Our waiter was very nice, but was not very responsive to the needs of our table and he incorrectly tallied the bill. We were charged for a much larger steak. We didn't catch this until after our card was ran, and quite frankly, we were ready to go and it wasn't worth the hassle, so we let it go. What has happened to this restaurant? It used to be so good; the service was great, the steaks were so delicious and the place was fun. Last Saturday November 9th, we (a group of 10 with a reservation) ordered dinner, hors d' oeuvres, and drinks. The meal arrived, my halibut was uncooked and luke warm, my broccoli had no garlic butter and was cold. The person next to me ordered the NY steak, medium-well and vegetables. The steak was cooked to death, dry and had the consistency of the soles of my shoes. The baked potato was not fully cooked--hard in the middle and the veggies were not even warm. The blooming onion was so greasy no one ate it. Yes, we wanted to give them the opportunity to make it right. But our server had disappeared. Gone. Never to be seen again. We all sat around the table, disgusted, staring at our dirty dishes and looking for a bright point in our evening. It came when we unanimously decided we will never have to be treated like this again, and the glory days of Ruby River are long gone. read more

Our party of 4 looked forward to dinner out after many months of eating in and we were excited to get reservations at this restaurant which had been a favorite spot in the past. Two members of the group ordered steak and potatoes and the other two ordered halibut and vegies. The halibut dinners were awful - portions were small and the fish was dried out and tasteless. Very disappointing and not what you would expect for a $28 entree. We were comped for one of the fish dinners thankfully (although both of them should have been removed from the tab, but wasn't worth the debate at the time). Don't bother. For one most of their tables are booths which is ridiculous if you have a group of people and don't want to be mushed. The steak was tough and so chewy like old leather.
