Why Sam Woo Village BBQ? - Craving Cantonese-style food, it's been a staple for decades haha - No issues with "to-go" orders 4/5 Food - Chicken wings 3.5/5 = MUST EAT ASAP or it'll get soggy - Soy sauce sausage 4/5 = DELISH - BBQ pork 4/5 = DELISH 4/5 Service| Ambience No issues with service since I've been here a bunch of times. Always consistent 4/5 Parking Usually open enough since 99ranch shares the parking.

Solid Cantonese spot a door or two from 99 Ranch. They have a separate BBQ to go section but I was eating on. I went with the beef with black bean sauce chow fun. It was more of a Hong Kong style with lots of gravy, which was still great. Service was great with water and tea refills. Not sure when I'll be back in the area, but this is a solid stop.

Sam Woo is the only authentic Cantonese spot in the valley my family has found so far. Even though they're known for their bbq meats, I would stay away from them as the ones we tried this time and in the past were pretty meh. Stick with ordering dishes off their menu instead. It's next to a Ranch, so there's plenty of parking available. We came by for lunch on Saturday around noon, and it was mostly filled up. It's not a big restaurant, and tables are placed pretty close to each other. That's how you know the place is going to be authentic lol They have a takeout area where you can get various bbq meats and some hot deli foods, but they also have a large menu you can order from. The four of us ordered the following dishes to try: #2 two item BBQ with roast pork and roast duck ($19.95 + $2 for roast pork) #78 chicken and veggie chow mein ($15.95) #85 beef chow fun ($16.95) #129 sauteed fish fillet ($18.95) #138 fresh squid in oyster sauce ($17.95) My favorite dish by far was the beef chow fun, which came as a huge platter and had really good wok hei flavor. The other noodle dish, the chow mein, was also good with huge portions. The fish and squid were both okay, but portions were small for the price, and to be honest, they were pretty similar down to the veggies used. We probably could've just ordered one. The most underwhelming was the bbq. The duck tasted okay but the cut they gave us was mostly bone and didn't have much meat. The roast pork was way too juicy and the skin, which is usually my favorite part due to the crisp, was tough and hard to chew.

Affordable and yummy family style food as always. Been coming here for years. This time we got the sole fish, sauteed spinach, salt and pepper pork chop, beef chow fun, beef tenderloin, and chicken fried rice. Everything was served fresh and hot. Servers were really fast and they love recommending their favorites too. Very casual vibe but I crave for this spot all the time. I love coming here. They also have yummy pecking duck as well. I recommend this place for family sized meals since it's all shareables.

Came for dinner. We got there around 6p on a week night and it was not full yet but was packed when we left. Upon entry there is a takeout area where you can order hot meat dishes and to go menu or dine in. We got complimentary hot tea when seated. The interior is a bit dated compared with other restaurants of this type but the food was delicious. We got duck and preserved egg porridge, scrambled egg with shrimp, and a two bbq combo plate of char siu and roast pork. The porridge came out fast and delicious! We ate with the chili and white paper available at the table. Next came the scrambled egg and shrimp. We actually ordered the version with rice, not the entree so the servers got us some rice but missing the gravy. Lastly came the bbq combo plate. We thought it would arrive first since the meats were all ready to go in the takeout area. It came with some hoisin sauce. The char siu was tasty. The roast pork however was not as crispy and kinda mealy so the sauce helped.

Sam Woo is the kind of restaurant craved by people who've had the privilege of eating authentic Chinese food and barbecued meats in nondescript storefronts and underground tea rooms run by people who barely speak English. The decor is simple and traditional, and though well-maintained, it's unchanged from decades ago. And that's what you want -- to walk into an atmosphere that feels lived-in rather than recently off-loaded from some nearby restaurant supply warehouse. It's always busy here at lunchtime, so be prepared to wait; though if you're willing to share a table with strangers, you may get seated sooner. And why not? The communal approach lightens the mood, and you can see what other people are eating so you can make plans for next time. The staff is friendly and fast, working hard to keep up with the crowds. They have a full menu of Chinese food here, with most of the expected dishes you'd find everywhere, but also quite a few options that are less familiar. No matter what you choose, the food is prepared quickly with care and arrives steaming hot. Flavors are deep, rich and layered, and portions are very generous -- no one leaves without a to-go bag. But the star of the show here is the Barbecued Meats, which (aside from pork & spare ribs) are not usually offered at most neighborhood places. Sweetly glistening pork shares space with a crispy-skinned "roasted" pork, along with roasted ducks and chickens, Chinese sausage, assorted fried chicken and pork chops, and a variety of sauces that add sweetness or spice as desired. Today I went for my favorite lunch: a combination plate of BBQ and Roasted Pork over Rice. The Roasted Pork is juicy, with a punch of allspice that pairs nicely with the slivers of crispy skin laid atop the slices of meat. The accompanying sauce is mild, with a slight tang that rounds out the bite. By contrast, the BBQ Pork has the familiar sweet glaze and semi-toughness, though here at Sam Woo the meat is nicely marbled and more melting than you'd get at other places. The flavor is pretty perfect as is, but I enjoy adding dabs of chili crisp to every other slice for an extra slap of heat. The bed of white rice is properly cooked and blends well with any or all of the sauces you're playing with. This is a no-cards place, so don't forget to bring your cash. Also bring your appetite and your sense of adventure -- it's a great idea to order at least one thing that's new to you, because when you're somewhere that actually offers you the opportunity, you should jump at it.

I grew up eating Sam Woo in San Diego, and I love living nearby one throughout my journey through SoCal. Sam Woo is a no frills and consistent place for good food. This is my third time here and it satisfies my craving each time. Got the roast duck this time and it was solid with good flavor. Unless you happen to get it fresh, the skin won't be crispy. The duck doesn't need the provided plum sauce, which is how I prefer it. I do think the soy sauce chicken I had last time was better. Noodles have good flavor and they always pack the container. I usually alternate between the chow mein and chow fun depending on what I'm feeling. Chicken feet has good black bean flavor and is super tender. The pig ear flavor was really good, but it was sitting too long so the skin was too soft for my taste.

This is truly my very favorite authentic Chinese place in the San Fernando valley When I am on the west side in Los Angeles, I go to Hop Woo, so good! I usually take duck lo mein with a broth: oh my God, it's so light and very delish Usually i order also a half duck to go The only problem with that place and the 99 Ranch supermarket is that the parking lot is overwhelmingly crowded, and the wait is 10 to 20 minutes for a parking space! Otherwise, that place is very good and delicious and I love going to eat there... even alone!

Prices a bit higher than what I'm used to for this but it's filling and hits the cravings just fine. |[ t h e g o o d z ]| Fish congee 4.5/5: so so good I eat this when I'm sick or just need some comfort in my life and it's always as good as I remember from my childhood. Chao ho noodles (we subbed shrimp in place of beef) 4/5: love the egg gravy on top, this is such a guilty pleasure item, my only wish is that they'd add more veggies to this. Fish fillet in black bean sauce 3.75/5: flavor was amazing but there was too much oil! Will prob ask for less oil in this next time. Egg plant dish (we asked for no pork in ours) 3.5/5: not bad but again way too much oil, it overpowered the dish for me. |[ o v e r a l l ]| Service is quick and efficient, parking is easy, ambiance is your typical loud Asian restaurant but that's part of the experience. xD perfect lunar new year eve dinner :3

I had a dinner party to host and wanted duck on the menu, but honestly--I just didn't have the time to make it myself. Funny enough, I remembered my nail tech had brought me duck one day while I was at the salon, and it was SO good--super fragrant, well-seasoned (almost like a subtle clove spice), juicy, and especially flavorful around the bone. I couldn't stop thinking about it. So the next time I saw him, I asked where it was from, and after a little thinking he said Sam Woo. He mentioned the San Gabriel location, but told me to just look it up. Turns out... there was one right next to 99 Ranch, which I go to all the time--and somehow I had never gone in before. I walked in, placed an order for three whole ducks and two large trays of rice for my dinner party, and the staff was incredibly helpful in guiding me on portions. Everything was ready within about an hour (perfect timing while I grabbed groceries next door), neatly packed, and one of the staff members even helped load everything into my car--which I really appreciated. And the duck? Just as amazing as I remembered. Juicy, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and a total hit at my dinner. Super clean establishment, kind staff, efficient service--I will absolutely be back. Next time, I'm actually sitting down and exploring more of the menu.

My sister was nice enough to grab me food from here when she stopped by there. I never been to Sam Woo so I looked at their menu online. The menu is almost like any other Asian restaurant, so they'll have their noodle soup, bbq dish, fried noodles and more. I saw that they had Mongolian beef here so I wanted to try that. Since I had rice at home, I asked for it to be la carte. I like the container they used for the beef because it has little holes so the steam won't stay in the container and continue to cook the beef. You get a good portion of beef and I thought it was delicious. The Mongolian beef was tender and marinated great. I would order it again from here. I been to the plaza where this restaurant is in before and parking can be difficult because of the market that is here.

The closest thing you'll get to classic Cantonese food in the San Fernando Valley and perhaps all of West LA (aside from Hop Woo and newly-opened Mama Lu's Dumpling House). They were busy for CNY Eve, but the service was still impeccable. We ordered an abundant amount of food to celebrate: 5/5 I'm going to save myself some time by giving an all-around 5/5 for all the dishes. Everything was hot, delicious, and served in generous portions: - Pork Chop with Spicy Salt - Fish Fillet with Spicy Salt - Peking Duck (Whole) served with prawn chips, buns, and condiments - Sautéed Spinach - Beef Chow Fun with Soy Sauce As long as they're open, I will always come back to Sam Woo with my family.

If you are looking for a casual old school Cantonese BBQ spot, hard to go wrong with Sam Woo. The restaurant doesn't try to compete with the newer style Chinese restaurants. It is perfectly happy to do their way of Chinese cooking, which has been consistent since 1979. I've been enjoying Sam Woo since the early 80's. My guilty pleasures are the three BBQ meat rice plate and fried pork chop with scallions. Huge portion of three different succulent BBQ meats with plenty of left overs. Another one of my favorites is the deep fried house noodles. There are a variety of rice and noodle dishes to try here. Enjoy

My family and I been going to this spot since I was a kid! It used to be cash only and I'm pretty sure it is under new ownership since becoming "Sam Woo Village" but it is still really good. Dine In - there can be a bit of a wait during peak times, especially if you have a large party. Have the tea that they set on the table! I think it's just jasmine tea but for some reason it's way better than when I make it at home. It can get really noisy in there so if that is a deal breaker for you, order takeout or visit in the middle of the day on a weekday to avoid crowds. Takeout - sometimes they don't answer the phone because they're busy or on the line with someone else. Just wait a bit and call back again. Whatever estimate they give you (if they give you one) get there a little earlier because sometimes there is a line of people ordering takeout. There is not a separate line for pick up and ordering. Parking - there is a huge parking lot they share with other businesses. It gets so busy though. I usually park on the other side by where chase used to be so I can avoid the craziness of everyone parking for 99 Ranch. THE FOOD!!! Here are some of my go to menu items: Westlake Minced Beef Soup - A MUST!! This soup always hits. It's like an egg drop soup with minced beef and little bits of mushroom. Add a little soy sauce to your personal serving before eating it - the slight saltiness this adds is amazing but the soup is great as is too. BBQ Pork Chow Mein with Pan Fried (Crispy) Noodles - I could eat this every day and be happy. The bbq pork is so good with the bok choy! The gravy they pour over the pan fried noodles gets soaked up so nicely - as the plate sits there, some areas of noodle remain crispy and others soften. If you order this for take out, they pack you some crispy noodles on their own and then a separate container with the gravy, bok choy and bbq pork so your noodles don't get soggy. When you get home, pour the hot gravy over the pan fried noodles and enjoy! Chicken Fried Rice - Honestly, I don't order this anymore. I docked 1 star on their rating because of this specifically. It used to be AMAZING! The rice was fluffy and had the right amount of saltiness. I know day old rice is usually ideal for making fried rice but the last 3 times I ordered this for takeout it was bland and the rice tasted like it was stale, week old rice. Beef Chow Fun with Soy Sauce - I'll only get this if I don't want my usual bbq pork noodles! Which is t very often lol Orange Chicken - really good but it is NOT like the big chunky orange chicken from fast food places so don't order it if you're expecting that. It's actually really flat but it's tasty! There are small red peppers mixed in with it, not too spicy imo. Kung Pao Chicken - lovely, no notes. Always delicious but I only get it if I'm dining in with a large party and need to order more. BBQ ITEMS - my mom usually orders this so idk what she gets exactly? I haven't been with her in a long time! I think one thing she gets is pork 3 ways or duck? The duck is really good I just don't know what to ask for I've gotten their deep fried chicken before though and it was tasty! You can order that by the piece if you want. Was an interesting flavor in that it's obviously not typical fried chicken. That is all, def a must try if you live in the valley! Before I say anything about the food, the service here was outstanding. The staff were all super friendly and helpful in choosing dishes, and they bagged everything up super nicely (cardboard on the bottom so the dishes didn't tip over, venting holes so things didn't get soggy) Excellent duck, noodle dishes were all great, and the veggies were fresh. Prices are rising all over, so it's a special occasion when my family does a takeout dinner. We were not disappointed by Sam Woo Village BBQ, and we will be back in the future for more special occasions. read more

BBQ pork and roasted pork over rice is such a good dish and what I was craving. Beef with black bean sauce is another classic Chinese dish so good. What absolutely enticed me while I was there was the fried pork! Yumm. It seemed like every table was getting it and I can see why. The restaurant seating is fairly small so if you go during peak hours you will definitely wait for a table. If you're in a rush they also offer take out. read more

Hot deli is so unorganized. There two line and no one knows what line is for what. They just started two line and people were all yelling and getting upset. Needs to be more organized which line is for what and a better processes of paying. Your food duck, chicken, or food sitting on counter. Sometimes no paper with the pounds/amount. Then they have to re-weight it. They write on paper and it gets lost because so many people touching the orders. 3 cashier which makes things even more complicated/confusing. Like the saying goes " too many cooks in the kitchen." I'm glad they use C.C now and not just cash. We they can have a better system to order from deli vs to go order. read more

Good Chinese food in the valley. We ordered the bbq pork and duck over rice, fried prawn with spicy salt, and the shrimp black bean over pan fried noodles. Everything was delicious and came out fast and nice and hot. The service was great they were very attentive. Came on a weekday so seating wasn't a problem but I have seen it gets quite busy on the weekends. read more

Menu is outdated with prices from my guess, 10 years ago. Needs update which would be about 3 times what it is revealing. Authentic Chinese food. Parking lot is busy and can be busy because of the 99 Ranch Market next door which is convenient for Chinese groceries. read more

It's me again! I try to come here at least once a week. That's how devoted and obsessed I am with this place and what they serve and deliver. But this review is dedicated to the man, the myth, the legend. My man Peter. The manager. He's always putting my family on new dishes to try and never holds back because he knows what they got is EXACTLY what we need. My family absolutely splurges on this place. Because the food is so darn good but the service even more welcoming. I've come here since the womb and I think this era of management has definitely been the greatest. I love all the workers like family and they've definitely met a majority of my family. Also I got into a car accident today and my life flashed before my eyes but as soon as I got discharged-- I came straight to Sam Woo. I know if anything was gonna bring me back to life-- it'd be this place. Anyway. Sam woo was poppin today for lunch! I love people watching and seeing what others are ordering. I even get excited for them when I see they got somethin sooo good. Sam woo is my heaven so it's always so beautiful and clean inside! I love this place so much I will never stop writing reviews. Especially on today's order of clams in black bean sauce. Let me tell you- I ALWAYS try to order this dish but they either sell out or clams were sold that day. But today was a blessing. When I say these clams are the most mouthwatering flavorful thing I've ever had in my mouth-- I mean it. Used to eat here all of the time. Haven't eaten here in awhile. Holy smokes! Pretty much minimum price for any dish is now $20 and the portions are significantly smaller and more scant. The shrimp with black bean sauce($20.95) had only 7 medium shrimp in the whole container and was mostly oily sauce and onions! It used to look like it was mostly shrimp! It was still delicious, but not worth the price. Oh well...guess I'm not eating here anymore. :( read more

This place has been here for years but I have never been here until recently. I ordered #20 BBQ pork and roasted duck on rice. It was really yummy. The sauce on the side that I believe is maybe sweet and sour tasted like it came from a metal can so I didn't eat the sauce. The #173 pork chop with spicy salt was perfect! It's not spicy as long as you don't eat any of the jalapenos or seeds. It wasn't even overly salty, didn't seem like there was MSG in it, and it didn't have heavy batter on it. This small place ie pretty busy but the food is bomb and service is quick. read more

Sam Woo Village BBQ came through on Christmas Eve when everywhere else was closed. Glad I called ahead...walk-ins were looking at an hour wait. Ordered the beef chow fun and beef stew wonton. Chow fun hit the spot but could've used more beef. Stew had good flavor, just wish the beef was a little more tender. Packed house, solid spot! read more

Had to grab groceries and was so happy to see this place next door so I could grab a quick dinner. The food came out in literally less than 3 minutes I swear, and the food was hot. The roast duck was honestly better than I expected as it was not dry at ALL. However, the sautéed Chinese brocolli they gave us seemed like old veggies, as it was tough to chew but the flavor was promising. The beef chow fun was okay, had good wok hay but lacked savoriness. Also saw a cockroach crawl on the wall mid meal which made us lose our appetites a bit.. but I'm not that surprised. I have been coming here a long time, however I had the worst experience with the owner Peter ( or so he claims). I hate to leave bad reviews but this guy was the worst. In front of all the restaurant he yells at me saying they called my number when I was right in front of the counter the entire time and they did not. Two other customers received their food before me when they ordered after me. They need to understand when they make a mistake and own up to it instead of yelling at me for asking for my food. I ordered two entrees over the phone. It was for the Chicken with mushroom and the Mongolian Beef. I asked for how much it would be. The person taking my order said they didn't know. I went to pick up my food and the cashier was friendly. But when I was paying for the food, it said $38. Damn. 19 for each entree is steep. I wish I knew over the phone how pricey it was. I went home and I tasted both entrees. The ingredients were fresh. The mushrooms really were juicy and not days old. That is the most prominent ingredient that I remember. All of the food was cooked with excellence with great ingredients. But damn. I don't think it's worth 19 dollars an entree. Great food, but very expensive. read more

Been here a few times with my family before shopping at Ranch 99 next door. Doesn't look super fancy, but it's a solid spot for affordable and authentic Chinese cuisine. Sam Woo offers roast duck and crispy roast pork which you can't always get at Chinese restaurants, so we always try to get a portion. A personal favorite of mine is also the salt and pepper squid. I'm sorry but my experience did not match the others and yes this is my first entry here. We went there based on a recommendation but I did not enjoy the service, food or price. Three strikes because it was over $40 for two take out dishes, which was not even warm 10 minutes later. Ribs were fatty and chicken small. Came here for Chinese New Year lunch. The line was out the door. Here's the check in process. You make your way in the restaurant and you may or may not see an attendant. If no one is there you'll see a note pad with a list of numbers. Put your name down and the number of people in your party. Then you write down your number from the list and wait for it to be called. I know it sounds chaotic, there's a method to the madness. It took about 20 minutes for our number to be called. Once seated we knew what to order. Pan Fried Noodles, kungpao chicken, Mongolian beef, salt pepper pork chops, honey walnut shrimp, and a pot of rice. Food came out quickly and delicious. You don't come here for the ambience, because it's nothing special. It's tight and cramped. You come here for the food... or travel to Chinatown or Monterey Park. 2023/02/23 Update: I went to Sam Woo to buy my dinner, I ordered Pork chop with spicy Salt, the price went up and the portion was smaller (like a third of their older portion) higher prices for a smaller portion. They printed a new menu, I took pictures of the new menu and posted them here. 202302/16 Update: I took pictures of their updated menu. I just noticed that they modified their name slightly from "Sam Woo BBQ Restaurant" to "Sam Woo Village" Their Dining Area was packed tonight and there was a lot of people on the take-out are waiting for their take-out order. 2022/03/12 Update: I saw that they had to increased their prices so I took pictures of their menu. It's good to see that their Dining room is packed and busy and their is a line to get a table. Pretty good Chinese restaurant in the Van Nuys, I've been coming here for Chinese food for over 30 years, the current owner took over management from his parents who decided to retire, the customers are mostly Asians which should tell you that it's good Chinese food. I have purchased little ziplock bags of salmon skin from here, along all the roasted duck, chicken, pork, chicken feet, etc. I have not eaten here in a while though. And this place never disappoints. We came here for Chinese New Year's, and had a lovely meal and the service was fast and all the workers were working very hard. This place obviously needs an update just like most authentic Chinese restaurants in the city and cleanliness can be stepped up, but nevertheless this is a Valley staple and we love the staff and we hope they stay here for a very long time read more

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. My husband brought me here when I was new to California. His family has been regular customers for many years before I arrived! We used to come here every week, but now that we don't live nearby, we try to visit as often as we can. The food hasn't changed at all--it's still very good! First, my Chilli Lime Ramen was absolutely fabulous!!! I LOVE this Ramen, soooo tasty and really hits the spot. The broth is exactly what I was craving. The meat pairs perfectly with this broth with the flavors dancing in my mouth. It was so delicious that I kept eating even when I got full so then I was really full at the end but so worth it. I wasn't sure that I would like the cucumber sunumono because it's full of carrots, but one bite and I couldn't stop. The cucumber and carrots taste very fresh and cooling and whatever it is they're soaked in, it's perfect. I don't like carrots, but I ate the whole thing they tasted amazing. Overall I'm so impressed by Ramen Izakaya, I will definitely be ordering from here again in the near future!!!

Since this is close to work - DoorDash delivery is good I got my orders (did it 2x) still warm. My pasta was hot and still creamy when I got it. Pretty good serving. I split it in 2 so i have a left over for the next day. It comes with a huge Italian garlic bread! Solid choice for Italian pizza, subs and pasta.
