Your basic food court food. You can see and smell exactly what you are getting here. Most days, you can even sample the chicken teriyaki and see for yourself whether you like it or not. So this is not authentic Japanese food, I don't need to tell you that, right? It's in the realm of fast food/quick Japanese made by Chinese folks. They are usually nice though. The meat is cooked to order, the other stuff is usually warm or lukewarm. Our go to is the chicken teriyaki bento; the chicken is tasty for what you get. The gyoza/dumplings are made ahead of time so they will be cold. The California roll doesn't have much imitation crab or flavor, but it's alright. If you are eating at a food court, mostly expectations aren't going to be high. So go with that in mind. read more

At Tanforan, I'm always torn between eating here, Chipotle or Jollibee. The wait in kind of long, there's always a line here. It takes a few minutes for the food to cook and the order to finish but I feel like, it's totally worth it. Fresher food, am I right? My go-to order here is the chicken teriyaki or even the beef. If you feel like your meat looks too dry, tell the cooks to add a little more sauce to it. ORDER THE EXTRA MEAT. If you leave it with the regular amount of meat without it, it ruins the meat to rice ratio. Plus, you don't want to feel like you have been ripped off. At least with the extra meat, your stomach will be more full and the meal will look better - aesthetics, am I right? On a day where I found myself to feel extra hungry, I did order the tuna rolls on a whim. Regret. Such regret. I got the rolls warm and it totally made my stomach hurt later. Their food is good. One of my grandkids' favorite place to eat when we're in Tanforan Mall. Never had any issue, except two days ago, ordered a few chicken teriyaki plate and side of CA roll. They didn't include my side order of CA rolls and I got charge for it. I didn't notice till I got home and didn't want to have to drive back. Felt bad because it was my granddaughter's request. Got a chicken bento box. There was a hair in my salad. When I brought it back I handed it to the chef and discreetly told him there was hair in my food. (There were a lot of people and I didn't want to embarrass them so I tried to say it as discreetly as possible) I thought he didn't hear me the first time because he kind of had this lost look on his face like "What do you want me to do?" So I repeated myself. This happened about two more times. When i was younger i use to date a girl in San Jose and we use to go valley fair and oakridge mall to eat Sarku Japan. We ate there because it was good and cheap. We eat there 3 times a week for six months. We ordered the same thing every single time. This place is not my favorite japanese place nor is it the place to get the BEST teriyaki chicken, but for $5 you get a lot of chicken and rice. The sauce is really sweat and the chicken is always hot and tender. All though i find it strange that the workers start shouting out japanese words whenever they are cooking to make it feel more authentic lol. 2 reasons to make you keep away of this place: 1) they serve unfair portions, more food for the person ahead of you, poor serving for you (comparing with the same order type). There's not a serving measure or standart, they serve whatever they think is right. Its a good quick hot bite to eat after shopping or running errands. Meals come with rice (or noodles, extra price) shredded veggies and whichever meat you choose (chicken, beef, shrimp or a combo of any). I usually get the chicken teriyaki (double chicken) and shrimp with rice and veggies. The meal itself is is a huge portion and can be a 2 meal in one deal. There also is pre-made sushi, typical selection of nigiri and california rolls. Ive had the sushi before..the rice tastes a bit hard, out of hunger just drown it in soy and wasabi! I dont recommend getting the beef under any circumstances, unless you have a vengeance against yourself!!! read more

The Chinese staff (speaking Cantonese) at this place is a bit courteous than ones in its Santa Clara location. This place offer bentos. BUT be aware it may take much longer to pick up your food. It happened to me when I waited in line to pick up my mom's chicken teriyaki bento... Took a while to see the bento box with rice showed up on the counter (possibly waiting for salad & fried veggies), then the veggies, even the chicken took a good while. There must be a better way to the flow. After the wait, my mom wasn't' impressed with the food... I really love Sarku. I always order the Chicken Teriyaki. I give this place 2 stars because I love the food but had a bad experience. It's Tuesday, June 24 at 12:30pm. I ordered two chx teriyaki w half white rice and half noodles, one w veg one without. I repeated my order several times to cashier. When they were done, my order was all wrong (one w fried rice and the other w veg and all noodles). I tried to have them fix it but the cook was literally yelling at me and wouldn't, making it seem like it was what I ordered. Dude, customer service skills. Just fix the order, whether your guest is right or wrong. And don't yell at them if your cashier made a mistake. I'm not giving up on you, Sarku. If you walk the food court of Tanforan, you're bound to try a few places Costco style. The plan was to get Jake's BBQ which is very similar to Sarku Japan but I folded after trying Sarku's teriyaki chicken. The draw to most of these places is almost always their teriyaki entrees and Sarku is no different. I went with their teryaki chicken and shrimp dish which comes with a mountain of rice. I was persuaded by their sign to get extra meat for additional $2. A guy needs his protein. The damage was about $10 for a more than generous serving of chicken, shrimp, rice, and a soft drink. For a mere 2 bucks I was given just as much meat as rice. We're talking a serious portion that I probably shouldn't have finished, but once you add that teriyaki sauce, grilled shrimp and veggies and rice, you can't stop. It's by no means outstanding food, but it's always comforting and it sounds healthy-ish. I'm sure the sodium is off the roof. Nevertheless I'll take a Sarku dish over any of burgers or pizza's nearby. Not exactly as good as I expected it to be. I've probably had my fair share of chicken teriyaki from here. I usually check to see if it's their $5 daily special and then double the meat for $1 more. Despite getting a mountain of meat and doused in sauce, it still tasted very bland, and on more than one occasion. For some strange reason, their free samples taste better than the freshly cooked stuff. Kinda makes me feel a little gyped. The lone bright spot is that they're really fast in cranking out your food even when they're busy. Next day same thing diarrhea stomach cramping and bloated. First, they DID have dumplings sitting right in the window, they just did not want to sell them à la carte, even thought they were on the menu.
