This was a great place to order a sandwich whether it was hot or cold. The reason as to why it only got 3 stars was because they were unprepared for Homecoming week. I had raved about this place to my family & took them there on game day but they were out of the bread they used for their subs. We had waited for 10 minutes and no one asked to take our order when we were standing at the register. Great atmosphere and really friendly. Very good. I love the variety of beers here and the sandwiches are made to order. I only wish that I didn't have to wait 10 minutes when there were only 2 people in front of me. Kinda cramped eating spaces too. But the quality of the bread, meats, cheese, etc is among the best in Tucson. This place is called the Sausage Deli but they only have sausage on Wednesday... I don't know why an owner would make that decision. I'm sure the staff is sick of hearing this comment and having to deal with frustrated customers. Still, I ended up getting the meatball sub, which was fine. Not amazing, not terrible, edible. With so many other mediocre sandwich chains in town Sausage Deli stands out from the crowd! Having grown up in New England I've experienced many different takes on the submarine sandwich. I have to say that Sausage Deli has the best Italian Grinder or Hoagie in Tucson and keeps me coming back again and again. After 19 years living in Tucson I have yet to find a grinder as good. Hands down the best deli sub shop I've tried in Tucson!. Sausage Deli puts a definite focus on "freshness". The breads, the fresh meats and cheeses cut daily, and all the veggies. My husband and I are fans of the Omar but won't eat there for many many years to come. Tonight we went in and ordered. While watching the preparer, go into the back talking on her phone, texting on her phone every couple of seconds from her back pocket. The disturbing part all with her same plastic food preparing gloves on. My point where had her cell phone been prior to touching every piece of those sandwiches she made. Obviously on her face, maybe the floor, the bathroom counter, her bra, the ground, did she wash her hands in the bathroom before she talked on her phone or even while she used the restroom. I have no idea, but I wasn't willing to let every place her cell phone had been be all over my sandwich. We canceled our order and left totally grossed out. read more

The best sandwiches PERIOD. I only wish there was one in the Phoenix area, every time I am in Tucson I eat here (since the late 80's). The bread is so amazing it melts in your mouth, I don't understand anyone that gives this place less than 4 stars. we went there to have a sausage sandwich. lo and behold they only have sausages on Wednesday !!! our sandwich was ok, very average. I think they need to change their name to the 'sandwich deli' being that that's all they have. they say they've been around since the 70's but that is because they USED to serve sausage sandwiches. read more

I ordered the Italian Grinder, my husband the Sausage Deli club. We were not impressed. We should have gone to so many other places that have much better sandwiches. Bland was the dressing on the sandwich, and it just didn't have that zing, no hot peppers available either. The cole slaw had a strange after taste to it, like pickles or pickle juice, which should never adorn cole slaw. The rolls were not even mediocre at best, got too soggy with the dressing. Came away with a just OK rating. Frankie's definitely has a much better, more flavorful grinder, that's for sure. He imports good ingredients from the east coast for authenticity. I freaked out when I noticed so many sandies on the menu so I built my own. I ordered a turkey, with tons of veggies on an onion roll. It was good, but it wasn't an over the top I'm thinking about it all the time sandwich. It was my fault, I ordered a turkey sandwich...BORING. My boyfriend got the Omar. It sounded gross it had three different meats and honestly the sandwich intimidated me. It of course was delicious. I'll totally give it an other try next time I'm in the area. read more

They are still not a 5 star establishment in my book- growing up in Phoenix and having the Duck and Decanter as my gold standard for a sandwich shop may not be fair, but it is what it is. Was treating my boyfriend to lunch half way through his sandwich he bit into a piece of red hard plastic right away I called over one of the ladies at the counter which that's where we were sitting right up front she called over her manager and right away he made us feel like we planted it in the sandwich he said he'd never seen that and he has nothing like that at his deli then he walked off like nothing! About 15 mins later he comes back gives my boyfriend a slice of cheese cake and says he's going to call that vendor so that whole time he was in the back checking his surveillance video. I've done business with them through my work and the sandwiches are good they don't cater so we go out of our way to pick up the sandwiches I'm just disappointed with how we are treated with the manager he's not very friendly I don't think my company will be doing business there again. I returned to the Sausage Deli after 30 years and had the exact same sandwich I used to get in college. Amazing! Consistent after all this time. Love the new digs. I always go with the roast beef, and you can't forget about the roast beef, mayo, lettuce and onion.. Subroll, lunch special, upgrade to the tuna salad and regular chips. As a deli staffer back in college I fell in love with every aspect of the deli experience from sandwich maker, caterer, cook to full blown samie connoisseur. I made the artichoke salad, sun tea/lemonade before Arnold Palmer made it famous, and prepared and cooked the roast beef. I dreamed about receiving a crushed ice machine just like the delis when I got married. The original owner at the time had been a DG hasher back in college. I was his first sorority girl he ever hired. I recieved so much hell from all the deli staffers and was picked on constantly. No "Susie Sorority" was not my sandwich, but a great one to try. It was a former DG's and deli staffer Lee Hughes. I was and will always be a Roast Beef lover. 34 years later the same recipes are in place and the freshest bread in town. Occasionally there is a sausage special we use to serve at the roadcross we called the 'Bees" do to the buzzing and the 4th Ave Street Fair. When ever alumns come in town it's on the list to stop by or at least a sandwich on the ride home. We have shared this with our children as I have with my son. His favorite is the "Omar". Whenever I travel I always search out for that deli who will beat it. No one ever has. They still have the best rare roast beef I have ever eaten. Now with the news of expansion by Chris Fanelli yesterday I am hoping he keeps some of the old charm. If you haven't eaten here yet you must. It's on the corner of First and Grant. read more
