It was hot. Very hot. Serafina Madison 38th was directly across the street, and after already logging six miles of walking, convenience won out. We were hungry, and while Serafina's Yelp rating was only passable, the air conditioning and proximity made the decision easy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated immediately, and the restaurant was pleasant and comfortably cool.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We quickly placed our order: * LASAGNA AL FORNO - Homemade meat sauce. $28 * FARFALLE AL LIMONCELLO - Bow tie pasta with baby shrimp, cream, and lemon zest. $26 I requested extra sauce on the side, as lasagna can sometimes benefit from a little more. Ice water arrived promptly and our glasses were refilled regularly throughout the meal. Our food was served quickly, arrived hot, and looked appetizing. There was no side of sauce, but our server explained that extra sauce had been added on top instead. The lasagna looked good, so I let that go. The first few bites were encouraging. The lasagna was moist, meaty, and flavorful. After a few more bites, however, I noticed a faint burned taste. A closer look revealed that one corner of the bottom layer had indeed been burned (see photo). Too bad, because otherwise it could have been a respectable dish. Next, I sampled the Farfalle al Limoncello. Wow. It was extremely salty--so salty that the lemon flavor was almost completely lost. Not good! Our waiter checked on us twice, which we appreciated. During his second visit, after we'd had a chance to fully taste both dishes, we mentioned the overly salty pasta. He said he would let the chef know. Unfortunately, that was the end of it. A complimentary dessert, a small adjustment to the bill, or even a sincere apology would have gone a long way, but nothing was offered. My fellow Yelpers currently rate Serafina Madison 38th at 3.4 stars (one of roughly a dozen Serafina locations in Manhattan). Based on this visit, the best I can give it is 3 stars. Would we return? First, I'll start with the positives: this restaurant allowed for our table of six people to be seated last-minute. On a busy day for the New York City Marathon, the restaurant was full, but they were still open to working with us on the reservation time plus total size number. The ambience was chic mix with classic as demonstrated by their open and spacious bar plus round tables tables marked by red velvet colored booth seating. Unfortunately on the flipside, the food wasn't particularly noteworthy. With so many Italian restaurants, restaurants available for competitive purposes in the New York City area, I was not blown away by their pizza quality (a bit soggy with the cheese) nor salads (small portion sizes). We waited for about 40 minutes for the food to be ready which also felt longer than most. Overall I would advise keeping this restaurant on your radar for last-minute reservations but would not plan ahead for months just to eat at Serafina. read more

I have been to this location many times, as our offices are close by, but this was the first time I walked out with my guests due to the hostess's (platinum blonde) extremely rude and unprofessional behavior. I had a reservation for two, and a colleague decided to join last minute. I called ahead to let them know we were two blocks away, and upon arrival I informed the hostess that we would be three instead of two. Her entire expression changed and she responded sharply: "No, you made a reservation for two!" Her tone was unnecessarily rude and defiant. I felt so insulted that I immediately suggested to my guests that we go to the French restaurant across the street -- which, by the way, was amazing. I'm not sure who trained this hostess, but if it were my restaurant, I would ensure she was taught to say something like, "Let me see how I can accommodate you," or "There may be a short wait -- would that be okay?" Not just ours, but no waiters were to be found. We wanted to order dessert but after waiting 25 minutes of waiting, I decided to go up to the hostess & just ask for the check since it was getting late. When the check comes we get a $9 charge for water? Still water? Unheard of. Absurd to charge so much for water, this isn't Europe. They ended up taking the water charge off which was nice. Serafina Midtown is a disgrace -- the food made me violently ill, the service was nonexistent, and the staff couldn't have cared less. I found this restaurant through inKind. I came between lunch and dinner, ordered the bufala mozzarella pizza, an apple juice for my son, and an amaretto sour. After a few bites of the pizza, I ended up with diarrhea and vomiting in their bathroom -- with my young son witnessing the entire thing. Neither the apple juice nor the amaretto sour ever arrived. I had to flag down in the hostess myself just to complain. The waiter finally showed up to bring the check and rattled off some irrelevant excuse about being "between services," as if that absolves them of basic competency. If you're open, you're responsible -- period. He tried to spin it like a favor by "removing" the drinks I never received, which only added insult to injury. I didn't even bother taking the disgusting pizza home. We only ate two slices, that too, the dough was raw and not cooked throughout for pizza. When we walked out, the staff didn't so much as acknowledge us. No apology. No goodbye. Nothing. I did not tip. This was by far the worst restaurant experience I've ever had, and it speaks volumes about how little Serafina Midtown respects its customers. read more

Went at an off time, before dinner rush but after typical lunchtime. Family of 4, with two early teenagers that are very familiar with proper etiquette and restaurant eating. We ordered a mix of dishes to share. Meatballs, bruschetta, penne vodka, buffalo mozzarella pizza and the Brussel sprouts salad. The penne was perfectly Al dente which is nice to see in a chain Italian spot. Pizza was surprisingly very good. Fresh sauce and crispy bottom. That salad is excellent with a refreshing lemon dressing. Meatballs and bruschetta were solid. Was easy to get a table and worth the stop in for a good meal that wasn't crazy overpriced, but it is still manhattan so $25 Neapolitan pizza is to be expected. To start, I think the overall score of 3.5 is pretty fair. Since there aren't half star options, I did go with four stars as both the hostess and the bartender were excellent. We walked in without reservations on a Friday night around 7:45. We had a reservation elsewhere but it was cancelled a few hours earlier due to flooding. So we had some ideas in mind, but decided to wander Murray Hill and see if anything jumped out. The flowers around the outdoor seating and entry along with the lit up bottles of wine in the windows sucked us in. I knew of Serafina before dining there, and tend to be super critical of Italian food after eating way too much subpar Italian food in the States and having spent a lot of time in Italy, so I wasn't sure what we were getting into. We started with calamari and then both went with pasta dishes bolognese and alla'amatriciana. Very pleased with everything we ordered. The calamari was very flavorful, perhaps a touch overdone, but we still enjoyed it. Both pastas were cooked Al dente and the sauces were exactly what we wanted. You could taste the fresh flavors in both. I wouldn't have minded my alla'amatriciana to have a little more spice, but for most people I think it's probably perfect. Overall, it's definitely a solid choice in the area. As stated above, we didn't have a reservation, but the hostess was incredibly nice about it and offered us either two seats at the end of the bar or at the pizza bar. We opted for the regular bar and were seated at the end, which ended up feeling just as private as our own table. We were immediately greeted by the bartender and he was wonderful throughout the evening. Typically eating at a bar can feel rushed, but we never felt that way, he allowed us to peruse the drink menu, take our time with that and an appetizer before ordering our entrees. He made sitting at the bar feel like an actual dining experience, which was incredibly appreciated after losing our intended reservation that night. read more

With rose bottles filling all the windows, it is a perfect spot for a photo ops. The music they play also sets the perfect atmosphere. The food came out fast and was really good. I got the Rigatoni Alla Bolognese which was very good. I would rate this place a 5/5 based on the atmosphere and food. We visit Serafina often, both for take away as well as to dine-in. Service in the restaurant is always friendly and food is delicious. I especially love the spaghetti squash and rosemary potatoes. Here's the problem though: prices are already pretty high but they still sneak in random charges. For example: you want to order for take away on the phone? No problem but we'll charge you 20% to put the order together. You want to celebrate a birthday? No problem but we'll charge you $14 for a subpar fruit tart, even though you've already ordered another dessert and $250 worth of food and drinks. I don't know...maybe I'm expecting too much here. We stumbled upon Serafina after our thwarted attempt to visit the Morgan Library. Needless to say, we were bummed and in need of a win. We tucked in after scoping out the lovely patio, and the vast menu. From the patio, we could watch the busy pedestrian traffic and street, while we were nice and cosy. I enjoyed a glass of Chianti with the bread and table oil they brought, while we perused the menu, which offers salads, pastas, other plates and pizzas. I settled on the Ravioli alla Salvia and my daughter had the Penne alla Vodka. We ended our meal with a couple delicious coffees. I had a decent bowl of pasta here at lunchtime while on my way to the Morgan Library and Museum next door. The pasta was hot and tasty. The sauce was a little thick and not the best sauce I've ever had. I was bummed they made me sit at the bar. I think because I was only a party of one they would only offer me outside (it was like 100 degrees out!) or the bar, even though they had tables and it felt a bit past the height of the lunch crowd arrival. I would have liked to look at some aspect of the restaurant or out the window--so this left me with a slightly less happy opinion--... rather than watch the bar staff continuously wash and put away glassware while serving me and the couple other people with similar fates....stuck at the bar...oh well.
