Love this neighborhood coffee shop, especially their oat milk lattes and pastries! They're one of the only locally owned coffee shops that has stayed open in SOMA during shelter-in-place and we're so grateful that we can get a taste of (safe) normalcy by stopping by for a drink or a treat. The owner has worked the past 60 days straight to keep it up and running, doing everything from roasting the beans to prepping the shop for opening/closing and making all the drinks! In better times, it's also a lovely place to hole up and work (inside or on the back patio) or read a book. Many years ago, they saved us a few coffee sacks from their roasting process so that we could use them in a sack race at our camp-style wedding, and that's always left me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Great find where expected least! I was visiting from the other side of town to go to COSTCO. I got there a bit early and the warehouse was still closed. It was 9:30 on Sunday morning, I had not had my first cup off coffee yet and was desperate! So I started walking the neighborhood with little expectation until I ran into a local walking his dog. I asked him if there was a cafe around, he, with an Italian or Spanish accent told me there was a good one around the corner. I must admit, hearing the endorsement in that accent gave me some hope. So I went around the corner and to my surprise I found this very nice Cafe (i.e. Sextant). I got me a cup of their regular coffee and it was pretty good. The space was nicely laid out, clean, and pleasant. The restroom was very clean, and the barista was very nice. I will go back to try their espresso next time. read more

I would not recommend this coffee shop, it is way too expensive even for city prices. Two regular lattes cost $17 (if you don't tip), they ask for tips even though you order via an ipad, and I ordered two of the exact same drink and received two coffees that were totally different colors and one of them was made incorrectly. Try Haus or Grand coffee instead! read more

The coffee ar Sextant is really good. They have a great interior design going with lots of natural light coming in. Plenty of space to work while enjoying a perfectly made soy cappuccino. Their prices are decent too for specialty drinks with soy or nut milk. It would be great however if they could offer some type of vegan pastries options. Everything they have had dairy unfortunately. This is a major and growing segment of the market and not offering at least one vegan option, in San Francisco, is just out of touch. Hopefully they can figure it out. I'll still go there for coffee. I came here to work during a weekday and the place has really good work vibes since it's a little bit dimly lit but quiet and comfy! It gives off homey vibes to me and is a good place to chill with your work in a group or alone! I couldn't find any outlets so that's my one complaint. They also have amazing bathrooms that are so high tech you need a receipt to enter and use a QR code to get in! read more

This place is a little out of the way in a neighborhood that doesn't see a ton of foot traffic. If you are in the area though, it's definitely worth checking out. I had a latte (with soy or oat, not sure) and it was delightful. The aroma and taste of coffee really came through. Finding a place where the drinks taste like freshly ground coffee smells is not an easy task, but this place has managed to pull it off. My only complaint is that their straws are terrible. Mine was ruined after walking a block or so. My partner's straw didn't even survive getting poked through the hole in the lid. read more

Another great finding in this neighborhood that I greatly enjoyed! And this is the second time I saw a huge roaster sitting quietly inside the room (last time being Caffe Vita at LES in NYC), amazing! Sextant coffee carried slightly less nutty flavor while maintained a lot more smooth texture, so a very different taste compared with blue bottle coffee, another renown chain in the west coast carrying a completely opposite texture. They also have a small backyard all the way towards the end that one could enjoy the sunshine (like today). read more

Sextant has been on my radar since day 1. It's 2017 and I finally made it. I haven't actually sat down to enjoy my coffee, it's always been to go. Really wish my schedule would allow me to use their outdoor patio in the back. I dig the industrial vibe of the exposed brick and stuff. Hipster? whatever. I like it. Sextant obviously does their own roasts (hence the name) and I'm a fan. If I'm here, it's usually an americano type of morning and then I take off. Baristas have always been friendly. However after multiple morning visits, I think they could be a bit more efficient making drinks. Line up multiple orders rather than take an order, make the drink, have the customer pay and carrying on ONE BY ONE. I get it that you guys aren't Starbucks (because F that chain) but maaaaaaaaaaaaan it can be incredibly slow. Oh if you love croissants, they carry Neighbor Bakehouse pastries! Don't skip them because they're amazing! read more

Easy walk from Civic Center Station. Decent amount of seating, and overall a cool spot. Wifi is free. Had the iced latte a few times. I admit I'm no coffee expert but I always enjoy them. Not too sweet, not bitter or burnt. A couple pastries are available. I really liked the almond croissant, I wasn't expecting there to be an almond paste in the middle. Staff has always been kind, no complaints. Also, cool bathrooms. Everything is touchless automatic and you need to scan a QR code (printed from a nearby tablet) to get in. Sounds silly, but it's the little things! Perfect for catching up with friends or sitting solo and crunching out some work. read more

I decided to take a quick break and grab coffee and a croissant. There were two baristas. The male barista volunteered to help me. When he handed me my coffee, I let him know that the croissant was warm enough and he grabbed tongs and started back to get it. As he was going back, a customer asked if he had light roast beans and he proceeded to have a long conversation about the history of light roast. I interrupted and ask him to please get me the croissant he was retrieving when the customer interrupted. He then lectured me on "waiting my turn" and needing to be better at "compromising". WTF? This is the best coffee in town and I don't appreciate the other reviewers whining about some petty service issues. Give credit where it is due. If you want to know how coffee is supposed to taste at its finest, order the drip with no cream or sugar. The pour over does not hit. The aftertaste is very chemical like I just drank out of a plastic bag filled with coffee. I've been ordering their beans ever since the pandemic. There aren't many places that do a variety of Ethiopian beans, and that bring out the delicious fruity flavors as Sextant. It might have to do with the fact that the owner is from Ethiopia himself? My favorite is the "Black Lion" espresso. Their "maiden voyage" is also quite good. With the plethora of roasters in SF it's hard to stand out, and Sextant definitely manages to! read more

As a 65-year old, perhaps I'm not hip enough for Sextant. Yesterday I wandered in and ordered a croissant and a latte. The barista handed me a croissant but forgot that a latte was ordered as well, so I paid again. She handed it to me with the comment, "latte to go." I replied that it was "for here," (she didn't ask) but that it was no big deal. When I asked another barista for the bathroom key, she gave me an explanation that I couldn't hear over the grinding of coffee, so I just left. These observations are not major. The coffee was good but it was the attitude that annoyed the heck outta me. Little interaction, not even an "oops" when she forgot my coffee, and for $10.25 for a small latte and a croissant, it's just not worth it. I won't be back and I'm sure they will do just fine without me as a customer. read more

Coffee: I ordered an espresso. The beans used were "Maiden Voyage" that features a syrupy, heavy body with huge notes of mixed berries, cocoa and cherry cola, per the bag description. This was one of the best tasting espressos I've had in the city. The berry notes have such a nice flavor. Atmosphere: Very laid back and nice looking spot. Lots of space and good decor. Music was at a good noise level meaning you can have a conversation and hear your partner well. The lighting was very nice and open in there as well. Customer Service: There were two awesome baristas that seemed very down to earth. Overall I had a really nice experience here. Great spot for studying and WIFI speed was great. I easily burned through 3 hours of studying here and felt really comfortable. 10/10 p.s: To those folks complaining about the bathroom system. Oh c'mon. The bathroom is HELLA nice. Yes there is only one bathroom and you need to get this QR code but they also have a key they can just hand you. The bathroom is all high tech. read more

If you're driving, there's parking around here for 1 hour. The vibe here was great, and I would say that their coffee and baked goods were awesome too! If you're deciding to work here, I would say that it's not the best place just because the outside noise seeps in the coffee shop easily and the music was playing quite loud. Off the beaten path, low key, roaster in the neighborhood. Came in right before closing and got a cold brew. Nice La Strada machine up front and the roasting operations in the back. A patio is at the very end in addition the small seating they have up front. Folks are pretty friendly and working as a labor of love for coffee. Too bad theyre not open later. I've had this coffeeshop bookmarked for awhile, and I'm glad I was finally able to visit with Jayme L. Another coffee adventure in the books! The menu is very simple, but I decided to go with the Red Eye after asking the friendly barista for the description. It was 2pm in the afternoon. I needed caffeine! At first, Jayme and I ventured to the outdoor patio that has a few chairs and some plants. Very simple look. Then we finally moved inside to one of the small tables by the entrance. This is more of a place to read or rendezvous with a friend, not so much do work.
