Stopped by here after getting a customer's vehicle serviced from around the block. It was my first time here and the barista was very helpful. Just found out this coffee shop is a Black Owned Business, woohoo!!! I love that for them. I got a regular mocha latte and the mixed green juice. As 2022 is almost coming to an end, I'm thinking of ways to become healthier and eating healthier. I got to try the mixed green juice which had pear, green apples, and celery. I hate celery but luckily enough I didn't really taste it in the juice. I believe the smell of celery is what throws me off. When drinking the mixed green juice, I noticed I was smelling the celery but the juice overall was an 8/10. It was so good, no doubt I finished it quickly. Life sure gets busy. For reasons I don't need to bore you with, I've recently been spending a lot more time in the East and South Bay. Some of it by choice, some of it not really. That means taking leisurely strolls around my SoMa neighborhood don't happen nearly as often as they did before. That also means discovering and hanging out at quietly relaxing coffee spots like Sextant becomes both a pleasure and a privilege. I'm treasuring moments like these a lot more lately, and it actually helps that the neo-industrial vibe of the space fits the neighborhood like a glove, not an O.J. glove, a real one (photo: http://bit.ly/2zMaSYk). The café and adjoining roastery are run by Kinani Ahmed, who was born and raised in Ethiopia, a fact pertinent to his business. His unique heritage informs the choice of coffee beans as they come from his country as well as Kenya and Colombia. This place is overpriced. Their coffee better have special powers. Almost $8 for a latte and it's turns out to be a 12oz!? I was shocked. And the space is honestly dark and depressing with barely no seating. Even the ambiance doesn't make up for the price. read more

Do NOT come here to work! There are zero plugs to charge your devices. If you must, bring full batteries. (Also a headset for video calls.) You order at kiosks and yet pay coffee shop prices. I thought the entire reason for the huge markup at coffee shops was the human interaction! So you get half of the human interaction compared to typical coffee shops. Oat Milk Chai's here are creamy, sweet, and just the right amount of spicy. They have plenty of seating and the baristas are super chill and friendly. I like that they have a small selection of fresh pastries and they have other packaged beverages such as kombucha and juice and chia puddings/ oats for breakfast. Stopped by for the first time last weekend after the farmer's market. Super aesthetic place! I noticed a lot of other yelpers ordering the "Wired Gandi" but couldn't find a description of this drink anywhere online. After speaking to the barista there, it turns out it's just their version of a dirty chai. I ended up getting it and it was great! This place isn't bad but I wouldn't say it's my favorite. I just bought a Hibiscus tea for $4.50 to sit there and work for a bit. The biggest issue for me was that there was no outlets really but there was wifi! When I asked about outlets one of the people there told me to use the one on a high beam where the TV monitor was but it was too high up for me to reach. The bathroom though has a QR code scanner so you know the bathroom will be clean. Plenty of seating though! I love the aesthetics of the place. Don't come here in the middle of the day though because it does get crowded. A lot of people working! read more

This place is around the corner from my garage (confusingly called "The Garage") and so I'll usually pop in to fuel up before the long walk across SoMA to get to work. They have the most futuristic bathroom system which is computer controlled and has some sort of queuing system built-in. I'm not sure if this is actually useful or just a fun use of venture capital money, but I enjoyed it. Last time I was here, I tried the Wired Gandhi, which is their version of a dirty chai. Like all dirty chais, it was a confusing drink to consume but had the desired effect, which was to dramatically increase the level of caffeine in my blood. The cafe itself is spacious with a pleasant wooden decor and friendly staff. I'll be back! read more

Nice spot if you're looking for a relatively quiet coffee house to find refuge amidst the busy streets. Soft jazz is pleasant to unwind to and didn't seem to bother the folks that were working on their laptops. Friendly staff. Amazingly delicious drinks and pastries - I had the ube mochi pastry (gooey & sweet) and the Wired Gandhi (dirty chai - yum) and I'd recommend both. read more

Barista: Hi, what brings you to this area? ... coffee? My lost and confused look disguises my native SF face, mistaking it for a tourist in my own city. I was meeting up a friend here and I was totally admiring the decor; the brick wall, the wooden tables, the outdoor patio-- excuse me while i soak this in. Its quiet and spacious, perfect to get work done or meet up a friend and devise a plan to take over the world. The coffee was good and the server was friendly. Disclaimer: this is only about one bad experience with the manager. Sextant is typically one of my favorite coffee shops. My mom was visiting from out of town, and we had ordered online to pick up at 11:30. It turns out that they had actually made the order at the time it was placed, around 11. When my mom went inside to pick it up she asked the lady behind the counter. The lady pointed her to two glasses sitting on the counter. As my mom grabbed them, the manager started yelling at her - what are you doing those are not yours. She quickly put them back down and explained she came to pick up a to go order. The manager then yelled at her again "we are not your slaves for you to pick up your orders whenever you want, what is an extra five dollars for you people, you can pay again if you want your coffee". My mom was almost in tears as she left, she hadn't even said two words and the manager had verbally assaulted her basically. I called afterwards to speak to him myself and he just defended himself and yelled at me as well. Worst experience ever - do not go here (not to mention they made shit coffee this time as well). read more

I was at the Folsom Stree Foundry for an event and came across this nice coffee shop next door. I really like the atmosphere of the coffee shop, and it also has plenty of seating for those who want to drink their coffees leisurely. I was here with a few coworkers and we got a seat in the back patio area which was super nice since you can get a breeze on a nice day. I got a cold brew and it came out right away. The size was a little smaller than what I expected and compared to other coffee places, but it ended up being a good amount of coffee for me. Definitely a spot to frequent, this cafe in SoMA has great coffee and charming outdoor seating- leafy and quiet. I sampled their Wired Gandhi, their version of a dirty chai, made with oatmilk and it was on point. My friend swore by the beans. Got 2 cookies and 2 oat milk lattes, some how ended up paying $30. The service was fine. We were asked to put in our orders on an iPad by the server, which only gave options to tip at least 20%. The oat milk lattes tasted really off and I had to dump it down the drain later after. Not sure if I will come back. read more

Wired Ghandi! Chai spice with a kick of caffeine. What's not to like? I also ordered a cold brew with milk, but that one was just okay. Too much milk IMO. Maybe it's the coffee addict in me, but I didn't find the iced drinks strong enough to curb my caffeine needs. Though I did find the Ghandi quite tasty. Will give it another shot with their hot offerings to see if that makes a difference. read more

Solid artisanal coffee shop in San Francisco, but I didn't really see anything that differentiated them from other artisanal coffee shops in the city. I stopped by around 11:45am on a Saturday, and it wasn't busy at the time. They had two pour over options to choose from in addition to the usual options of latte, etc. They also had a cold brew option available. I opted to try their Yirgacheffe Pour Over ($5), which was super smooth, but had a slightly acidic finish. They roast their beans in the back of the shop, which would be cool if they did a mini tour, or had a display window or something along those lines. Beans are around $14/bag. They also had some cookies available (vegan and non), but no other food options. Parking was easy at that time, and there were good metered street parking spots. I believe there is also one free street spot on the street right before the cafe. read more

I have been at coffee lovers for well over three decades and pasted coffee's from different rosters from all around the world. Sextant coffee roasters can compete easily with the best of them. Their coffee is skillfully roasted beautifully packaged, and extremely well prepared. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and very professional. The interior is bright and airy too; perfect place to read or get some work done. - They sell some other things too in a cooler, like kombucha or random prepared foods. - The bathroom is very clean and high-tech. You ask the barista for a QR code & inside everything is automatic; no need to touch the door or anything which is kind of crazy! Lowlights: - The coffee was......okay...? I tried an almond milk latte and a normal dairy gibraltar and didn't like either of them. Each one is supposed to contain 2 shots of espresso but neither of them actually tasted like coffee that much. For a place that roasts their own beans I'd expect a little better. - No pastries or anything, just a few vegan cookie offerings. Overall, cool, quiet place to sit but wouldn't go back for the coffee anytime soon. read more

Wavering between 3 and 4 stars. It's a nice place that I wouldn't mind coming back to, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. This location has a few things I would like to start with. The physical area of the city is odd, but they make up for it when you go inside. As a coffee roastery, you walk in and see the open space, and get an instant smell of coffee beans. The building is lovely and exposed brick brings you into a daze away from the modernness of SF. They had skylights in the building and large windows in the front so it makes it really nice and bright. There is plenty of space to sit, include a small but inviting outside area. Their menu is interesting with fun names for each drink - which can become confusing, but also makes the location feel brighter and happier. They didn't have pastries, but they did offer a selection of vegan cookies - which were delicious. Personally I am not a fan of earthy coffee as much, but I do love supporting places that roast their own beans, and that is what this location does. read more

COFFEE AND CAKE I've been coming in and out of this place since they have opened. They roast their beans in-house so the aroma of coffee is always escaping from the front door. I have tried their iced coffee, red eye, latte and latte with almond milk so far. All are fairly good. But today, I had their blueberry crumb cake, and MAN. OH. MAN. IT WAS DELICIOUS. The cake was moist and the crumbs on top were lightly sweetened with the perfect amount of crunch to make this piece the perfect snack or meal. The blueberries were relevant with the combination but I couldn't get enough of the crumbs on top. It got a bit messy, but don't worry, that's what my plate is for! It came in a HUGE slice! And it was one of the first times I couldn't finish my piece of cake by myself...I wanted to though... I really did! On nice days, we like to sit in their back patio and enjoy the sun under the umbrellas (seems logical to me!) and on rainy days we enjoy sitting in front of their large window. The natural lighting, wooden furnishings, and brick walls will continue bringing me back as long as I'm in the area! read more
