3.5 stars for me - Not the best I've had, and definitely not the worst. Had their Soltani, which is a combination of both the Beef Barg and Beef Koobideh. Meats could have been seasoned slightly more, but I still enjoyed them, especially with their own house made flat bread. Interestingly, I was not served a plate of raw onions with butter. Not sure if it's something they do only upon request, or if they just assumed that a non-Persian would not be eating that. Service was good. Good old standard. I had the rehearsal lunch here for my wedding and EVERYONE was talking about how tremendous the food was. Mind you, most of the wedding party was not Persian. Many were transplants from NJ or Utah or Oregon. So, of course, they're taste for real authentic Persian food was limited. But the spread Ras Minaei (the owner + operator) put out for us was absolutely marvelous. Cornish Hen, Lamb, Salmon, Naderi Soltani... My mouth is watering all over again! I was invited to eat lunch at Shaherzad by one of my Persian friends. He said that this restaurant was the best in town. I ate, I smiled, & I agreed! 4.5 stars!! Shaherzad is a cute little restaurant located on Westood Blvd, close to Wilshire. It is tucked away among many of the shops that front Westwood Blvd. Don't blink too quickly, or you might miss the restaurant! Once you find it, you will have discovered "A Whole New World" of Persian Cuisine! I have to once again begin my review by stating that service always begins and makes a meal for me. When I arrived at the restaurant, the very friendly and super energetic server, Seegar (spelling? Sounds like Cigar) greeted me with tons of love. She was an awesome server throughout the meal! She really worked hard to make it a great experience for me. Thank you! We started off our meal by sipping a House Doogh, which is a yogurt based drink that has added salt and spices. Here at Shaherzad, it tasted like they added oregano to the yogurt drink. It was salty, yet refreshing to drink. It goes very well with the meal as the yogurt base helps to smooth out much of the flavors from the meal. For appetizers, we were given flat bread that was served with a cucumber and yogurt dip, butter, and raw onions. They make the bread FRESH right in the back of the restaurant (you can watch them make it) and it is super hot, cripsy on the outside, and chewy on the inside. Delish! Another appetizer we had was the Kashk Bademjan. This dish was seasoned eggplant with a topping of kashk yogurt sauce, sautéed onion, and mint. It was fun to get this appetizer and eat it with the flat bread. The eggplant was cooked so well, that it blended well with the sautee'd onions (almost caramalized). What a treat! For my main meal, I had a combination plate with two types of meat. The first was the Chelo Kabob Barg. This was a flat tender slices of all natural filet mignon, marinated in special house recipe, broiled on open flame. I have to be honest - I LOVED this dish. I typically don't like fillet mignon because of it's iron taste, but this dish was bursting with flavors. The meat was tender, and cooked to perfection where all of the meat's natural favors came rushing to my tongue. The second meat was the Beef Koobideh. This was seasoned ground sirloin mixed with grated onions and rolled around skewer, broiled on open flame. Upon my first bite, I thought of meatloaf but very fancy. It was flavorful and succulent seasonings in this meat skewer that just transported me back to the ancient Persian culture. Very delish and recommended! Both meats were served on one platter, and it was accompanied by white and yellow rice, and a grilled tomato. I was instructed that the trick is to break apart the tomato and mix it with the two rice types, along with some butter. Heaven! We ended the meal with two treats: The first treat was the Turkish Coffee. A cute little cup of espresso-like coffee that had a HUGE bark & bite! The coffee was nice an flavorful and strong. You add two packets of sugar to it to bring out the flavors in the coffee. If you are out for an adventure, ask your server to read your coffee grounds on the bottom of the cup after you've finished, as the Persians think that this is a good source of fortune telling. FUN! We also ate the Persian Baklava. Okay, so I've had many types of Baklava in my life, but this was my first experience of eating Persian Baklava. It wasn't sweet like many of the others that I've tried. It was sort of chewy (like jelly filling chewy) and had HUGE flavors of pistacio, cinnamon and I believe rosewater! I actually wanted a second piece, but wasn't brave enough to ask for one! hahah! You KNOW I'll be back to get more yummy-ness from this restaurant! I've been ordering from this place for years now. I love Persian food and I've ate all almost every Persian restaurant on Westwood Blvd. this restaurant has everything you need. They give you enough bread to feed a starving family of 20 when you order a meal. The person that takes the orders on the phone is a bit slower than normal. I placed an order last night over the phone abs he repeated my order 5 times without exaggeration. I was confused at the end myself when he was asking me so many times. I didn't get it. Terrible experience with service and food. First of all, they sent me wrong orders. I called them and the manager promised me to make it up for me. 2 days after I told myself ok, I'm giving them another chance. So, I ordered rice and chicken. Probably the worst meal I've ever had! chicken was not cooked enough and as a doctor, I can tell you how bad it is to eat uncooked chicken. I called them and requested refund. Persian food in Westwood? Get out. Hahaha. This place is OG. Been around since the 80's but looks cool and renovated. The food is very good, the service was excellent. So why only 4 stars. Should've around a 4.5, sadly I rounded down. I say sadly because the food is very good. Some things were excellent and some things good. But I'm like a super fan of Persian cuisine and eat it all the time since, yeah, since I got my teeth at 1. And it's some little things here and there. But overall very good. I got the Cornish hen with a skewer of beef koobideh. See the hen was good (no where near the best) but the beef koobideh was one of the best (Obviously Raffis in Glendale is the very best). But this was actually pretty close. I was with a crew one of the guys pointed out under the cold app platter they called it "gorgeous". Using adjectives for your own menu, AWESOME. We got it, and yes it was gorgeous, and tasty. Over all, I want to give it 5 star, maybe if next time they kick up the hen quality I'll bump up. Anyway you slice it, this place is excellent. We had a beef Soltani.the beef koobideh was average as it was a bit dry and had a bit smell.the beef barg was seni tender and ok except for being tasteless.we added salt,somaq and pepper to everything. The rice was nicely cooked. The environment is nice and the staff were friendly. We could not find any private parking so we parked in the street. read more

Used to be my favorite place but unfortunately not anymore. Few things I liked; they did great job with renovation, decor, amenity and also bread was delicious like before. I asked for Ghormeh Sabzi witch is sautéed fresh green herbs, red kidney beans, and basmati rice. Rice was too dry and no taste. Ghormeh Sabzi always comes with some good cut and about a inch size either lamb or beef (stew meat) but there Ghormeh Sabzi had flat and thin meat which did not look and tasted right. This restaurant must have had some pretentious customers because it definitely deserves way more than 3.5 stars in my opinion. You walk in and are greeted with a very modern and classy decor -- simple and elegant. I believe they had a remodel not too long ago. We sat down and were immediately greeted with such hospitable and genuine servers. We could not believe how sweet and attentive their staff was. The service throughout the night was on point - probably one of the best we've experienced. For our dinner, hubby and I shared the asheh reshteh, masto moosir, the tadig and the trout dish. The ashe reshteh was by far one of the best I've tasted. They also had a lot of khoresht (or stews) that were vegan. The rest of the meal was amazing as well. The food was very fresh and came out very quick (almost too quick). We ordered just enough food and had leftovers to take home. The ambiance was quiet, warm and welcoming. You have to beg for service and overcome servers nasty attitudes. AVOID THIS PLACE The owners, Rasul and Mahtab Minai have been told many times that service and quality of food has become inferior to what it was during previous owners. This used to be good authentic Persian food. Not anymore. The kitchen is now shared with Flame as they merged two years ago and took a dive in quality and service. To stay on the safe side, order food that is in high demand. The rest of the food is out of can and mixed with old dry vegetables. Not authentic at all. Some of the servers are impacable. Some are hurandous. I dont recommend both of these places for families and events. read more

We used go there back in late 80's. It was pretty good and happening place. I came up with an idea to visit this place after so many years and walk across the street to my favorite ice cream place. What a mistake! We ordered the Soltani Chelo Kabob, it was probably the worst I have ever had in my life. And I consider myself an expert in Persian Cuisine. The only good thing was the bread. The beef was dry, tasted beefy like it was never marinated. The Koobideh (minced) kabob was the same tasted like a cheap burger meat, no onion or marinade taste. The restaurant was a total chaos. Thankfully we only ordered one item and I am glad we didn't order other dishes, when we were observing the other tables, they didn't look appealing. Now to be fair other than the appearance of the other dishes, they may be good but I doubt it since we noticed there were a lot of tables with left overs and not packed to go. I think the only reason that they are surviving, is the prime location. One thing is for sure I will never go back and waste my money. read more

If I could give this place 3.5 stars I would. I came here with a couple friends who were visiting LA from the east coast. One was staying at UCLA for a conference so wanted to go somewhere nearby. The decor inside is nice and welcoming. The servers were friendly. After we ordered, they brought a basket of fresh bread that was still hot and clearly made there. The bread was delicious - I couldn't stop eating it. I ordered the tahdig (crispy basmati rice) with 2 stews. I got the eggplant stew and the beef and split yellow pea stew. They were both full of flavor and matched nicely with the rice. Despite the fact that it was an appetizer, it was filling and the portion was huge. It was more than enough for a full meal - I couldn't finish it. My friends also ordered a tahdig - they had the eggplant stew and the pomegranate stew, which was nice and sweet and decadent. They also ordered the Adass polo as their main, which was rice with lentils, onions, dates and raisins and was served with baked chicken (which actually looked boiled). The adass polo was bland and disappointing, especially after such delicious appetizers. I would be interested to try some of the other dishes given that the tahdig was so outstanding, but the rice entree was such a letdown that I'm not sure if I would try another rice entree. read more

I was really disappointed on my most recent visit. I'm not sure if the food quality has declined, or whether I just know Persian food better than I used to. But, the lamb shank was kind of bland, the fava rice was very skimpy on beans. The hummus was (inexplicably) not very good at all. Even the shallot yogurt was very plain. We got chicken kebab, and it was dry --- although the zereshk polo was good. The tachin was probably the best thing we tried. The lamb inside was a bit dry, but flavourful, and the rice was delicious. Lots of ghee (but maybe too soft). The crust on the rice was not crusty at all, sadly. I like this place. It's very Persian (legit). They make fresh lavash bread on the spot. They have a ton of different rice options which were pretty tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner here. The ambiance is great, friendly servers, and the management even played Persian music for us per our request. (I think you should always play it!) We got an assortment of food. The eggplant dip appetizer is delicious and sooo yummy. The dough yogurt drink is great. The meats were perfectly cooked, tender. We ordered a side of the veggies basil, etc which came with feta cheese which may I add is the best feta cheese I've ever tasted. And of course you have to end your feast with Persian black tea. I ordered food on postmates today and could not believe how WONDERFUL the food and portion size were. I love Persian food and frequent Westwood for a few different restaurants, but I saw this was available so I wanted to give it a try. I got the Beef Koobideh with Zereshk polo that came with bread, barley soup, fresh onion, and sumac(I love that they still included these things because some restaurants assume that just because I have an American name, I won't know to chop some onion on my rice and sprinkle sumac on my kebob, so some restaurants don't include it for me). This would have fed two people, or been wonderful for leftovers later(had I not been such a glutton and eaten it all on my lunch hour) I was extremely impressed with the quality and freshness of the food, and can't wait to order again and try some other dishes. read more
