The food at Shaherzad is truly exceptional... If you doubt me, order any of the meat dishes, try the Shirin Polo (an unbelievably favorable sweet yellow rice dish with orange peel, almonds, pistachios, saffron and rose water) sip on a glass of hot water with fresh mint (nana) or alternate bites of raw white onion with fresh bakes crispy bread (is it nan or lavash?, I always forget to ask!) So why the 3-star review? Read on! Reason #1. I am living in the past... I unfortunately remember what Shaherzad used to be and cannot help comparing what it "is" to the better version of itself Shaherzad use to be. Reason #2. While "management" is attentive and always checks in to ensure guests are enjoying their meals, the servers are at best indifferent. On my last visit I asked if I could have my Shirin Polo served on top of the chicken I ordered and was told "no" by my server (a young woman whose name I do not remember) and when I said I have had it that way before she told me "that must have been at least 15 years ago... we do not do that any more." My only response is that there is a sense of arrogance in Shaherzad's staff that did not exist "15 years ago" or 5 years ago or 3 years ago... Reason #3. The new decor is too formal for a casual lunch meeting or impromptu family dinner... This is not bad... It is just limiting. Shaherzad used to be the perfect "tweener" place you felt comfortable going whether it was a spur of the moment quick bite or a family special event... Now we only go when we have planned ahead and dressed for the occassion. Reason #4. Shaherzad used to be as much about experiencing Persian food as it was about eating it. For example, there used to be tables where you could watch the fascinating process of baking the Lavash in the clay oven... the slapping of the dough against the sides and the diving in to pull it out were mesmerizing,,, now the tables are set up so that the oven is isolated and it is a waste of time to try and watch the baking process. The bottom line is this... Shaherzah has exceptional "Persian Cuisine" (it is now too fancy to merely call it "Persian Food" but it is no longer an exceptional restaurant/dining experience! P.S. This is my 250th review on Yelp and I purposely took my family to Shaherzad in the hopes that this milestone review would be a hugely positive one... I believe there are different types of bad services. Some may be due to a lack of structural support, appropriate training, and guidance and supervision while the worst can be characterized as malicious and intentional. The ladder severely violates the baseline trust and respect in any forms of human interaction and this is what Tony Y. Jr and I had experienced at Shaherzad. We were here on a weeknight as first time customers after hearing about Shaherzad's culinary supremacy from my credible Persian sources. The ambiance certainly reflects the hype as the place was packed with groups and couples to bring about a festive atmosphere. Their complimentary homemade flatbread was fresh and warm, and the menu was filled with many delicious Persian dishes that led a couple who sat next to us to openly rave about their food. My order of albaloo polo ($13.95) came with an outstanding price tag and it was hands down delicious. The two humongous pieces of savory lamb shank were finesse and flavorful with the meat falling off the bones without resistance of any kind. My large plate of long grain cherry rice was slightly tart and nicely buttered with good texture and seasoning. During the meal I also find the savory broth derived from the lamb shank to go really well with my rice. I must tip my hat to the cook. Our server's name is Benhoor. At first he was mildly friendly but he also disappeared after taking our order. While the lemon for Tony's water never came, we also saw Benhoor paying closer attention to larger groups that came after us. By the end of our meal it became a belaboring process to track him down as he was the center of our attention in the most unnecessary manner. When he finally came by our area, the couple with whom he was taking orders from told him to attend to our table as we had noticeably been waiting for a long time. Benhoor responded by asking them, "Do you need anything else" and turned to look at us only to walk away with a dismissive attitude. This caused the table next to us to say "He clearly does not like you guys". I responded by walking to the register to pay without waiting for the bill to come. It was there that I complained to the cashier about Benhoor's service. The cashier casually reacted by saying, "It's a busy night" as a justification for the poor attitude. It was unfortunate that the service could not match our experience with the food. I will be calling the restaurant to request for an explanation and additional steps that can be taken to correct their service model. I met a friend here for a late dinner specifically because Saffron & Rose Ice Cream is across the street. Excellent planning, btw - both places are open late and it's super convenient to walk to get ice cream after dinner here. The food on this night was awesome - yet the service was lacking. Our female server was not warm or friendly. She took our drink orders but then seemed distracted; we had to flag her down to take our food order and then to get the check, and my friend's empty water glass never got refilled. She did check on us during our meal, but a much more friendly male server checked on us also and he was so much more pleasant. The raw onion quarters, bread and butter that's brought to the table immediately is nice, but this is all GREAT: Kashk Bedemjan - this warm appetizer of creamy eggplant was topped with a savory yogurt sauce and the most delicious caramelized or fried (maybe caramelized and THEN fried) onions ever. OMG I could eat a ton of this stuff. Every. Day. Side of lamb shanks - 2 small, long, slow cooked, meat-falling-off-the-bone tender shanks in a brothy sauce. I almost didn't have room for this after inhaling the eggplant, but it was so delicious that I finished it all! Bademjan (Stew) - a tomatoey, oniony, eggplanty stew served over a large lamb shank, with a giant plate of saffron rice on the side. Delicious!! We had the biggest bowl of fesenjoon we had ever seen and there was so much that I took the rest home and had a delicious breakfast of fesenjoon and taydig the next day. I came back here to relive memories of my youth, and perhaps days where I ate koobideh like a king. Shaherzad, despite some issues, will always have a special place in my heart for it's proximity to UCLA and for it's rich dishes. I found the beef koobideh to be just as I had it many years ago. The beef is very soft with a slight egg flavor to keep it all together. The rice could have been more plentiful, but I found it to be the softest basmati rice around. The tomato was huge, and ever-so-juicy in what was left in the take home box. This is probably my favorite dish here, athough I have sampled the salmon and the fesenjon here as well. The salmon is quite plentiful, and large in comparison to what you may get at other restaurants. As for the fesenjon, you'll have enough to last you two days despite the subtle and smooth flavors present. While I could say the staff could use some light-hearted smiles and stop trying to upsell certain drinks or dishes, they seemed to work out this time. I was happy to get the extra bread and butter, albeit slowly. Regardless of the staff's disposition and lack of mindfulness, I came here for the food. I'm happy to have visited again, and will when I can. Parking can be a bit tricky, and while reservations aren't always needed, I scheduled it as a safety. I have never been here and had to wait more than 10 minutes for a table. So if anything, call in advance to see how busy the restaurant is, and be prepared to park a block or two away. read more

Just picked up food and nobody was wearing a mask or gloves. When asked why they didn't have masks on they said the owner was the only one who didn't have a mask on. Quick disclaimer: I used to live a block and half away from this restaurant, so my opinions may be colored by my fond memories of college. This is the best Persian food I've had ANYWHERE! It's the best restaurant in Westwood (a.k.a. Little Iran), the San Fernando Valley, and Sacramento. Ok, so maybe that's not the most varied sample of locations, but it doesn't change the fact that this place has the best Persian food out of all those locations. In case you don't trust my Asian palate, I've even had Persians native to Sacramento agree with me about Shaherzad. It's that well known. Ok, so onto the details... I typically order the kashka bademjan (eggplant dip thingy) to go with the delicious bread that they're constantly baking fresh in the kitchen pot thingy. The bread is so damn good that it defies logic. This stuff is simply amazing, but like mana from the heavens, it's not as tasty the next day, so eat as much of it at the restaurant as possible. I usually get the kebabs (i.e. Beef Chelo Kebab Koubideh) for my main entree. They come with two kebabs, about a pound of rice, and a roasted tomato. Back in my college days, I'd eat half the entree, fill up on bread, then take the rest home to eat for another meal. The prices have gone up by about $5 per entree since the end of my college days (2005), but the quality hasn't diminished one bit. I recently ate there to carbo load for the LA Marathon and I'm happy to say they're just as good as I remember. If you're craving Persian food and you don't need to worry about the Persian burps (similar to Korean BBQ burps) afterwards, definitely check out Shaherzad. read more

Stopped by with some bffs last Friday. I got the salmon kabob again but opted for the lima bean saffron green rice. Very little lima beans and the rice was a bit dry, but the fish was moist and fresh, generous and grilled just right. I split it with my friends, who shared a lamb kabob and still had leftovers. We also started with the kashk bademjan. That and the warm, soft, slightly crispy outer crust bread....MMmmMmm...fill it, top it, and wolf it down. My friends' persian teas were refilled frequently and strong enough just to keep them awake for our next party stop. Service was absolutely great and better than I remembered it. I asked for water with no ice (still got a lingering cough) and during one refill, she said she had to heat the glass up for me because she accidentally got ice in it. Lol too sweet. The combo platter is great - I highly recommend it. Everything is sooooooooo good....ESPECIALLY the kashk bademjan! Also got the boneless chicken kebob ($14.95) with substitute side order of shirin polo rice. Ahhhhhh SO GOOD. The chicken was so succulent, so flavorful. And the shirin rice!!!! According to their menu description, it's rice with orange peels, pistachios, almonds and saffron with a hint of rosewater. The result? Absolute beauty. It's so amazing how the flavors blend together so well. It's something that's really hard to put into words. So I won't bother trying. Just go try it for yourself. This place is reasonably priced. I give it 4 stars because of one kind of prickly waiter. Don't get my wrong - service is not horrible. Our greeting waitress was all sunshine and smiles. But the person who took our order seemed a bit impatient. Maybe he was having a bad day or something. Atmosphere is great. It's not a 5-star hotel but, then again, it's not trying to be. Then I received a call from this very rude lady that told me she was the owner. When I told her what happened, she just started yelling at me that told me I was lying and it had nothing to do with her and I had deal with GrubHub. I offered to show her my confirmation that shows what I ordered and i did not receive the correct food, but she just hung up on me. The ground chicken was SUPER moist (a tad bit on the oily side but delicious) and the rice. I LOVE BASMATI RICE. With that juicy tomato. It IS a big portion so just beware. I only finished half and I was SO full. Beef koobideh sandwich : meh. Tasted really... ordinary. Nothing special. I'm glad I ordered the Chicken koobideh. THE NAAN. Very good. I think I might prefer the fluffier naan though. We're in Los Angeles visiting UCLA campus. I'm Iranian (half), and this food was really good. I've eaten Persian food my entire life and this was up there with the better meals I've had. We had my favorite beef koobedeh cooked on skewers with charbroiled tomato. Really good flavor, and cooked just enough to still be cooked through but juicy. This place is awesome! Went here tonight for an early dinner with a girlfriend. Well, I thought it was early but it was packed! So, I guess people who eat Persian food eat early. The service was awesome. We had a cute lady server who explained the wines quite well- and let us taste too- and also the food before we ordered. She gave recommendations that were right on. She didn't bother us too much or rush us. It was just right The ambiance was perfect. I felt like it was a really authentic Persian food experience. Not too american-ized. There was music (not live) and it was great. The food was amazing. There was fresh bread- I only tasted it and then the entree. My entree was a lot of food. The food is not cheap. But, you get enough. The bathrooms were clean enough. I went twice- once in mens and once in womens. Actually the mens was nicer and bigger. There was an older gentelman who seemed troubled when I came out of the Men's while he was waiting. I feel like bathrooms have no gender so I'll use either. I had a broiled fish and my friend had an eggplant stew. Both dishes were perfect. The rice was amazing- as Persian rice is. No dessert as I ate my dessert when I got home. Came here with the Mister because it was near his work in Westwood and he said to me, "Oh Babe, we gotta come here because they give you a whole onion and homemade toasted pita bread!" Nasty ass breath onion lover! jk jk, but seriously though they do give you a whole piece of onion, and the pita was quite tasty, crispy and so good! We also ordered a bowl of cucumber yogurt so we can dip the pita into and that made my appetizer experience ten times better. We ordered the Baked Lamb Tahchin and the Chicken Koobideh; I wasn't a fan of the Lamb dish because it had an acquired taste but the Chicken Koobideh on the other hand was amazing, the chicken was so flavorful, tender, and juicy; satisfying my taste buds all around. The chicken was just boiled and kind of tasteless. The koobideh was average and ordinary. I'm not sure why my brown was dark, almost dirty like. The ladies sitting next to me all had white and clear basmati rice which my dish came with as well. Needless to say, I spend the rest of the afternoon regretting my $30 dollar decision of eating there. I'm not sure what did me in, but I was hurting pretty bad all until the next day. You've got your pick of Persian spots in Westwood, but Shaherzad is the place I keep coming back to time and again. A lot of it has to do with consistency. Sometimes I eat in and other times, I order delivery, but every time, the food is exactly what you expect. The bread is always fresh and tasty, and I've had my share of menu options, and the chicken and beef entrees are high quality and delicious. The Albaloo Polo is a must have, and the Chicken Fesenjan is addictive. The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender. This place gives you all the sumac your heart desires, which makes everything better. Service can be hit or miss even at off-peak hours. The servers are very friendly, though. Another negative is that they sometimes run out of Tahdig. Ate here after the LA Times Festival of Books. My book-reading buddy used to dine at this wonderful little Persian restaurant. It is close to the Border's Books and Music on Westwood Blvd. Parking was a little difficult on Saturday evening. We parallel parked about 3 blocks away on a small side street. The wait was not too bad, considering it was early and the restaurant was already packed. We were seated right in front of their brick oven for the flatbread. If you have never seen this made, you must take a look! The process is quite interesting. The bread was tasty and very fresh. For an appetizer, we ordered the Kashke Bademjan (seasoned eggplant topped with Kashk yogurt sauce, sauteed mint and onion). It was okay, but I've had better. The flavors were complex, but it seemed a little bitter to me. Perhaps they burnt the onions and mint? For our main course, we got the Albaloo Polo (sour cherries and sauteed onions mixed with rice, served with chicken or lamb shank) with the lamb option. It was brought out super fast, which was great because we were both starving. The lamb shank was in a flavorful tomato-based sauce and it was delicious and tender. The cherry rice was topped with a touch of saffron rice on top. It was sweet and complemented the lamb well. The main guy taking the orders was a bit intense and seemed cold at first, but when the restaurant settled down a bit, he came back to our table and asked our opinion on the food. We told him it was great. The lady who served the food kindly gave us extra plates for sharing - without us asking! As others have mentioned, the amount of food in a regular order is usually good enough for two. The total came out to about $14/head. We didn't get any drinks. Putting that atop the fresh bread was money! Delicious! We split two dishes - the chicken and ground beef kabobs. Both had great flavor, although the chicken was a little on the dry side. The saffron rice with barberries was an interesting flavor that I hadn't experienced before. Although it had a hint of tartness, it worked well with the special salad dressing and greens to add a little balance to the plate. The portions were huge so I was able to eat it for several meals, which pushes my rating to 4 stars. The Tahchin is a very interesting dish that looks like a layered cake, except that it's made of baked rice and there's meat in the middle that acts as the "filling." It's topped with tart barberries that compliment the savory taste of the baked rice and meat. The Kashk Bademjan is an unassuming eggplant onion dip that goes really well with the freshly baked bread that they give you at the beginning of the meal. But the last time I ordered tahchin the chicken was kind of smelly and it looked like the chicken was not fresh or was not cooked well in order to not have the foul smell. Love this place. Our office is close by so we usually order about one time a month at least. They deliver for free also which is useful. The portions are very generous especially the lunch portions. I have tried most of the things on the menu and I have to say the Yogurt dip and crispy rice are the best things on the menu. Their Chicken kabob is also extremely juicy. I suggest asking for extra salad dressing! The salad dressing is so tasty I pour it all over my food. The Salmon is also delicious for those who do not like chicken or red meat. This place always exceeds my expectations. Every time I have some here whether to dine in or take out. The service and food is delicious and consistent. Their boneless chicken is one of the best as well as their ground beef sandwich. Their starter bread is one of my favorites, its soft and served warm. I would recommend this place. read more

This place used to be good long time ago. Did they change ownership? What happened? We went there on Saturday night. Place was empty. We should have left seeing no one was there. Very bad Cousy we service. Shahryar guy was really rude and no Courtney service. I am amazed these people are still in business. Horrible food, horrible service. Never will go back there.... read more
