I wish I had the person's name who helped us this evening! She was so incredibly next level kind. We came in at 2 minutes to closing (I would hate people like us normally, we were just late coming from a performance at the Dolby theatre). Anyways this girl was so sweet to us. Their machines close when their store does so she explained I would have to order quickly. I did so as fast as I could and got in my order but I did it so quickly I only put it one meal for two of us. I also only was able to put in the default tip as I was trying to race the clock (I really really regret that but didn't have any cash on me to add!) Not only did the girl come over, apologize for something she had no control over, but she also gave us a drink because we didn't have a chance to order one and told us she made the hamburger herself. I would love it if you could recognize her awesome attitude and for helping us in such a nice way when I bet she wanted to get out of there too, it being so late. I live about 100 feet away from this location so i eat here a lot purely out of convenience. I use their app to order and when it tells me my foods ready for pick up, i walk over to their "walk up window", wait a few minutes for someone to notice me and then collect my food and leave. I noticed they were having a free delivery promo with the code "Getshack". I decided i was feeling a little lazy so i had my food delivered this time. I ordered a double shack, add onions and fries with a side of shack sauce. Received my order in about 20 minutes. I opened up the containers and saw that my burger was just a double cheeseburger... no lettuce, tomatoes or onions. Since I'm only 100 feet away, i decided to take the food back and ask them to remake it. I also planned on asking for a refund on their bogus $1.36 "service fee" for taking a delivery order. I spoke to a cashier and told her what happened, she said they'll remake it and issue me a refund for the service fee. I wasn't given another receipt or a number or anything... so i sat at a table nearby and waited. I waited about 20 minutes before i walked up and asked if my food was ready yet. They then proceed to walk over to the delivery pick up window and grab my order. I asked about the service fee refund and they grabbed the manager Paulina. Paulina said that all refunds need to go through corporate and that she had requested my service fee to be refunded. I was told that i would automatically see the refund in my statements in 3-5 days. Nothing was given to me to confirm this. No receipt, not confirmation number-nothing. When i asked about it further she said she could give me coupons if that's what i wanted ‍ i said no thanks, just the refund please. This review is honestly just to keep Paulina accountable. Let's see if my refund comes in. I understand it's only $1.36 but this location ALWAYS messes up my orders... they probably owe me over $100 in messed up orders. Years ago, I had Shake Shack in Las Vegas. I don't remember much from that visit, though it probably made a positive impression. This visit, I am giving the Los Angeles downtown branch a chance. Let's see how this big In N Out competitor do, huh? Right off the bat, I don't enjoy the downtown location, because you know the usual, busy traffic, hard to find parking, just in general, the familiar city chaos and confusion. They do have online and app ordering, so perhaps one can order ahead of time to minimize stopping time. Just pick up and go. (Side note: they have this tv monitor that would display orders that are ready for pick-up. I feel this is a nice touch.) Homeless folks are also nearby, scavenging for leftovers on the street. None of this above stuff is the brand's fault, but it does negatively affect my impression of the business. We ordered at the cashier/kiosk. (Cashier staff was energetic and courteous. Liked her!) We waited for our food to cook, which took a while; but it's understandable since I believe things are made to order, not pre-made. You know, the whole premium fast food spiels. It took at least 15 minutes, though I thought it's worth the wait, for reasons listed below. The food, for sure, tasted good. This isn't up for debate--it's definitely good. So to me, Shake Shack really does deserve it's well-received reputation. I wasn't very aware they use top-quality, organic* (*please verify this on your own) ingredients or whatnot, (I didn't read their info board that closely), but I could tell their patties are not pre-made or frozen. So everything did taste fresher. I got a double Smoke Shack. My partner got a single Smoke Shack. And we both each got a side of fries, which is crinkle-cut. Smoke Shack was great. Nice patty, gooey cheese, tons of bacon, complementary seasoning and sauce, and a little bit of tart and spicy peppers for that extra kick. (I wasn't aware of the pepper part when ordering--told you I wasn't paying attention to the menu board.) But this surprise came pleasantly and I welcome it for livening things up. Would eat again! The fries were like whatever. It's got lots of potato contents, nice and thick, though since we did take-out, it just wasn't fresh when it got home. But I imagine it wouldn't have been that super duper extraordinary even had we eaten it right then and there. It was fine. The oil they used to fry the fries, though, tasted yummily nutty. Do I detect a hint of peanut oil? Whatever it was, it worked. It gave the otherwise no longer fresh, a bit dull, and yet somehow still kinda tasty fries a bit of life beyond its expected expiration. I wasn't a fan of the pricing, since it's a bit overpriced, (I think most Yelpers would agree on this count), and I feel like I could get a similar level of quality and satisfaction for cheaper at my favorite burger joint Habit Grill. I do like Shake Shack for what it offers, however, and I do understand I am technically paying for better ingredients and the brand aka the "lifestyle", but at the end of the day, it's burgers. It's a place that I wouldn't mind coming back to, though most likely not as frequently due to dollar value, and to another location that would induce less traffic-related hassles. I am a bit divided between 3 to 4 stars, mainly due to pricing. Our dinner cost us $27 total, and with parking factoring it, it was like $30 something (mid-range). 3.5 stars in reality, but rounded down to 3 for my overall spending costs. In my opinion, they are the first real east coast product that seriously challenges In N' Out for burger chain supremacy here on the west coast. THE BURGERS: The Shack Burger (single: $5.29) is a cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and Shack Sauce. Simple, all freshly made ingredients and delicious. The Smoke Stack (single: $6.84) is a cheeseburger topped with a spicy cherry pepper relish, and two slices of Applewood-smoked bacon. Smoky, bacon-y, a little spicy, and just incredibly delicious. Perhaps the best burger on their menu. And here is my inevitable comparison to In N' Out... WHAT THEY DO BETTER: Delicious, chewy, pillow-y soft Martin's potato roll. It reminds me of the old spongy, sweet Wonder Bread growing up. Great seasoning on the beef patty, made with a higher quality beef (than In N' Out) you can taste. Even the tomatoes and lettuce are better (they use green leaf lettuce). Equally good Shack Sauce (creamy, briny, tart). Options which includes additional toppings and add-ons. The Shack also sells beer and wine. Score! This might be "the icing on the cake" for many. After all, what pairs better with a burger and fries than an ice cold beer? There are more flavor choices on the milk shakes, including Cookies & Cream, Salted Carmel and something called the Black and White. WHAT THEY DON'T: The fries are made with frozen potatoes, not freshly made. The patties are iron flatten, it causes all the juices to escape, can make it fall apart and makes them a tad too thin which is not preferred. No combo deals. This is where they, and Five Guys, really get you. An order of a single patty Shack Burger, fries and a regular fountain drink will cost you about $10.60 before tax. THE VERDICT: Shake Shack certainly impressed me. The Smoke Stack was a big hit and better than anything at In N' Out. The use of a potato roll and green leaf lettuce. Additional topping choices. Their equally tasty but different Shack Sauce that holds its own with In N' Out's. Still, I cannot completely remove my west coast bias about In N' Out. Animal style sauce, its simplicity, the freshly made fries and, most importantly, its combo deals. They still reign supreme among all burger chains, in my opinion, but I am now a big fan of Shake Shack as well. Both have their ardent fans and detractors. I say competition is always welcomed. The mushroom was definitely the best part because I absolutely hated the limp buns. There was so much juice from the patty that the buns were gross and soggy. Their buns are soft and I already don't like that... it's worse because they definitely hold the burger together. Also, the weirdest thing was this burger was like barely warm... and I think it's only because of the deep fried mushroom, because my friend got a cheeseburger and said their burger was so cold they had to microwave it :/ at nearly $12 for this, it's a huge disappointment. After years of hearing the hype about this place I finally had the opportunity of trying it and best believe, I'm a believer. Albeit, a little overpriced, considering the burgers are about the same size as In & Out burgers, but IMO superior in flavor. As seen in the pic I posted, I had the double SmokeShack burger, my fiancée had the single ShackBurger and we both shared a side of cheese fries which are basically crinkle-cut fries topped with melted cheese, reminiscent of the nacho cheese from Taco Bell lol. Everything we tried we thoroughly devoured it, wishing afterwards that it wasn't so calorie-dense, so that we could do it all over again. Maybe in a month or two, or sooner if we forget about the guilt fast enough. Now on to the verdict, there's nothing really outstanding about Shake Shack but what makes me wanna return is something in the patties that give it a homemade taste, that usually only occur in burgers at backyard barbecues. Continued to be impressed by this place! I'm glad they decided to grace LA with their presence. Ever since the first location opened up in West Hollywood I've enjoyed visiting to enjoy their delicious burgers! From WeHo to Glendale and now to Downtown LA! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw they had a new spot. One thing I will mention is that there is no designated parking lot for this particular location. We had to park less than a block away and pay $6 (I believe). The store isn't as big as the other locations but it's to be expected in the downtown area. They do keep up with the trendy - hip vibes though. I ordered my favorite - the smoke shack burger with a side of cheese fries and lemonade to drink. I've also tried their shack burger before, which is just a plain cheeseburger. And it did not disappoint! Having had Shake Shack in a few different cities across the country, I'm an even bigger fan of In-n-Out now. This new Shake Shack is located in the heart of Downtown just a block away from Whole Foods. We came by on a Sunday for a quick dinner and were surprised that the restaurant was completely full. After ordering, we waited about 10 minutes for our buzzers to be called. The Shackburger was pretty small. If I just ate that, I'd be hungry 2 hours later. I'm not a fan of the texture of the buns because they're super soft, but that's just my preference. The meat patty was pretty small too. I liked the Chick'n Shack more. A crispy chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, pickles and buttermilk herb mayo. The chicken was fried well and pretty juicy inside, but the sandwich got pretty messy after a couple bites. I'm not a fan of crinkle cut fries at all, so I'll never order them here. But I did steal some and they were nothing special. My biggest gripe with Shake Shack is that everything is a few dollars more expensive than it should be. A burger with fries and a drink will run you almost $15, whereas the same thing at In-n-Out would be less than $10. Pretty big difference in my opinion. If I had a choice, I'd go to In-n-Out 9 times out of 10, and the 1 time I'd go to Shake Shack, I'd hope the food would be better. read more
