Due to lots of restaurants closing very early in the evening, Shandong is one of the only spots that is open after 6 pm in the Chinatown Oakland area. My friends and I came on a Friday night, and you can tell this place was packed with a 45-minute wait. Once we got seated, we ended up ordering the popular items that were seen through many of the reviews on Yelp. We ordered: Combination Fried Rice, Shandong Dumplings, Shandong Chicken, Stir Fried Green Beans and Ground Pork, and Beef Chow Mein with Homemade Noodles. The time we ordered to when the food was brought out was really quick. I thought the taste was decent, but it isn't anything close to authentic Chinese food. There wasn't any "wok hei" taste to any of the stir fry dishes and most of the dishes were a bit too salty. Anyone familiar with the dishes would have a hard time picking which ones to eat as they all look and taste very good. The noodles and dumplings are prepared in front of the store. Service is fast and flexible. Would recommend coming with a group to try as many dishes as you can. Would also recommend to try the prawns with candied walnut and the braised green beans. I haven't had Chinese food this good in a long time. We showed up during the dinner rush so we had to wait about 15-20 min for a table for two but as soon as we got seated service moved very quickly. We got the beef chow mein, Mongolian beef, hot spicy chicken, and pork fried rice. All we're fantastic - in particular the beef chow men noodles were probably the best I've ever had. We ordered 8 dishes and they all tasted exactly the same, but just with different ingredients. No garlic. No different spices. Nothing, but soy sauce and salt. A total waste of money and time. UPDATE: So the next day 2 of us didn't feel so good. It wasn't food poisoning, but affects from way too much MSG! I woke up with a massive headache that didn't go away for 24 hours. This explains why the food was so salty! This spot is open during shelter in place and we ordered delivery for lunch, which happened to last for dinner and lunch the next day too. Everything we ordered from Shandong was absolutely delicious! We tried the Hot Spicy Chow Mein with handmade noodles. This dish was so good and not too spicy - it had just the right amount of kick. We ordered their popular Shan Dong Chicken, which is a fried chicken with a sauce that was on the sweeter side. This dish was also amazing. Then we added Mongolian beef and the combo fried rice. Those were good as well but not the highlights of the meal. I'd say for the price you pay, the amount of food you get and how happy your tastebuds are after you eat, Shandong is worth a try. Have ordered takeout from here a few times with work groups and they've been good - people love the handmade noodles that we could see them making while we waited for a table. Would recommend joining the yelp waitlist - seems like they go through waves of business and we waited about 15 minutes for a table but they rotate through patrons quickly. They do a bustling takeout business but dine in is just as fast. There was complimentary tea at the table when we sat down and after a short wait we placed our order. We got the Szechuan noodles & mixed vegetable deluxe special (vegetarian) as well as the special dumplings. So good! The noodles had a peanut-ey sauce that I didn't expect but the handmade noodles were unique and yummy (a few were thicker and a bit undercooked but not enough to be an issue). The veggies looked like bland steamed veggies but we're actually well seasoned and tasted fresh and yummy. I will say reheating (portions are HUGE) noodles made them a little chewy/pasty so be aware when ordering and try to finish them quickly! read more

Me and my SO wanted to check out Shandong after she heard it through the grapevine, and I saw it mentioned on a foodie blog. We went on a not-so-busy day, but the front of the house is booming with takeout orders. After being seated, we got some complimentary hot tea and ordered the special dumplings, sizzling rice soup, and Szechuan noodles; hand pulled, of course. We got the dumplings first, and they were some big, thick-skinned dumplings; which I personally like. The filling was decent, but it was elevated with the chili oil and dipping sauce. I think these are pretty good for the price, the portions are generous and are either good as a starter or the whole dang meal. The soup came next, and to me it was just okay. I'm not too experienced in what makes a good sizzling rice soup, but it was definitely enough for two people and then some. The biggest reason I came here though was for the hand-pulled noodles, and they didn't disappoint. The noodles and sauce were hand-tossed by the waitress herself, and it was nicely creamed together. We got the Szechuan sauce and it was not spicy at all, like how other reviews mention. But the noodles themselves were thick and long, and you can tell each strand was different and unique. It was my favorite part of the meal, and definitely worth the extra dollar to upgrade to hand-pulled. The inside is very clean and the service was prompt. Also a great time to be hearing Cantonese being spoken and the servers English was very proficient so an ABC like me could ask for clarifications on dishes when trying to learn the name in Cantonese. I've always felt that the best Chinese food in California was in the Bay Area. My most recent experience was at Shan Dong, a little hole in the wall in Oakland's Chinatown. What makes it unique here though, is that the sesame hand pulled noodles were second to none. And you can get the fresh noodles with other dishes. Dumplings are fluffy I was hooked and have gotten them every time we return, but lately not feeling them as much. Hand made noodles should be the only version of noodle. Was looking for a place for dinner after visiting nearby Children's Fairyland and found this place based on other fellow Yelpers. Street parking was very easy for dinner time since almost all stores were closed in Chinatown by 5pm. We got there early at 5.30pm before the dinner rush and was able to get seated right away at a big table for a party of 5 (4 adults and a toddler). By the time we left, there was a line outside waiting for a table. I noticed there were a lot of take out orders constantly being prepared so that seems to be a big part of their business. We ordered the 5 dishes special along with one order of handcut noodles. That was perfect for us and we had leftovers. Take note that with the 5 dishes special, they are smaller portion sizes compared to their regular portions (probably around 75%) but that allowed us to try more dishes at a more reasonable price. This is what we got: Deluxe combination chow mein with hand cut noodles - loved the bite and texture of the noodles Fish fillet with cream sauce - tender fish and lots of yummy veggies Salt & pepper pork chop - tasty but the pieces could have been less boney Dry braised string beans - excellent flavor Shan dong chicken - very yummy with crunchy exterior even with the sauce Szechuan bean curd - spicier than I thought so beware Overall, the food was very good and I can see why this place is popular. I would highly recommend the hand cut noodles. The place is reasonably price for nowadays. I first tasted Shandong dumplings and noodles a couple years ago at a Chinese New Year celebration. I really enjoyed both and have been back a few times. My son and I usually order in on Tuesday's and for me Shandong was my top choice for today. As usual, the spicy Sesame Noodles were excellent. Such great flavor with the perfect amount of heat. Their Chicken dumplings were extremely flavorful, I love the texture and dipping sauce as well. My son ordered the 4-way fried rice and loved the dish. I had never heard of this restaurant but my husband really wanted to go because nba reporters used to go after warriors games and rave about it. There's no outdoor seating and it's small. We went at 1:30 on a weekday and it was empty when we got there and only a few tables when we left. I wouldn't be comfortable eating indoors during the pandemic otherwise. All their staff were wearing masks though (no vaccine card check for guests). We ordered the sesame noodles, pork fried rice, shandong chicken, onion pancake and green beans. The hand pulled noodles were the best and I really liked the green beans. Everything was good though the fried rice was a little salty and the scallion pancakes a little bland. Catered toward non-asian people. 95% of people are non Asians. If you grew up with authentic chinese food, this is not the right place. I had the Mandarin beef soup that everyone was raving about in the review. The hand cut noodle didn't work well in a soup noodle dish - better in the chow mein version. The soup base was super sweet. The beef pieces were tender but I really disliked broccoli and carrot in a soup which doesn't work well. The hand cut noodle is much better at MY China in SF. Their hand pulled sesame noodles here are SO good! They're thick, chewy, and hold the sauce so well. I also really liked their scallion lamb, it had a super strong scallion flavor and they were really generous with the serving. The lamb was also super tender and seasoned really well! The string beans were cooked perfectly, they had a great bite to them and had a super strong garlicky flavor! I personally wasn't too big a fan of their Shandong beef, it was a deep fried beef then drenched in a sauce. The sauce made the outer coating taste soggy and the beef itself was very hard and tough to chew. Overall, the prices are great and the food is solid!
