For legit Shanghai food in the Seattle area, there's not much. But Shanghai House does a couple dishes really well (haven't tried them all!). Be sure not to confuse them with Shanghai Cafe across the street. Shanghai House is in the same strip mall as Taipei 101 and behind the Batteries Plus store. Favorites: - Kao fu is some of the best I've had - same goes for the sweet and sour fried fish - "Classic Shanghai Double-Cooked Filet of Fish" - Wild Malan Salad is a good, herbal flavored green that is very shanghainese. - The salted pork and bamboo soup (with tofu skin) was a super big serving and had good flavor. OK: - Grandma's Braised Pork Belly - some of the pork was a little tough, but the majority were melty and delicious. Avoid: - We were not impressed with the jellyfish appetizer. Nothing special about it. Supposedly they are going to keep adding to their Shanghainese menu over time, we can't wait til they get some authentic sheng jian bao (生煎包), the soup filled pan fried dumpling! read more

Form a Chinese perspective, it is by far the worst Chinese food I've got. The tofu were cold inside, the yellow eel tasted nothing but black pepper with rubber ban. Fried rice is just not good. The lunch special is a joke, given the crab wonton is deflated and you only get one. The portion size is quite small. The most offensive thing is that they do not use mushroom sauce to enhance the flavor. I tasted salt, and chicken flavored powder, maybe... As an Asian Person, when you screw up on rice and charges $9 for a no meat fried rice and still screwing up, it is unforgiving. Service staffs are polite and on-point. I won't be coming back. Foods are tasty and flavorful! I love the fried pumpkin coated with salted egg yolk. Princess prawns are perfectly cooked with nice quality ingredients. The mustard leaf dumplings soups is perfect on a cold day, warms my tummy. Mandarin chicken wings are tasty tender with the sweet and sour sauce like. Plates are generous portions. The rice balls soup dessert is lightly fragrance of sesame. We'll be back to try more of the different plates. read more

Wanted to get some Mu Shu and fried rice from my favorite restaurant. Walked in to look at the menu and wasn't ever greeted. A group who came in after me got greeted and seated. Delicious food, authentic Shanghai style cusine with great quality. I love the sweet and sour spare ribs, homemade sauce is excellent and the appetizers jellyfish and starter fish is the best I i have tasted, better than ones I tried in Asia. The owner is super nice and gifted us a wonderful dessert of black sesame ball in sweet wine egg soup. The menu is full of authentic top quality food with homemade sauces that are hard to beat. Will never come again. I came in with one child for my other child's birthday. They didn't have a table, so we waited. After a long wait they finally had a table. But since my husband and other child were still on the way, they wouldn't let me the seats, but insisted on having the whole party there. The owner said it's the "rule". I explained it's my child's birthday and I can order first so he wouldn't be hungry when he arrives. She said I should ask all those "behind" me on the queue before letting me in. It's common to have a rule like that, but extremely unreasonable to not telling me in the first place, asking me to wait, then asking me to ask all those who came in later for permission. It's the most disgusting thing I've encountered in a restaurant. They don't deserve your business. read more

I like the food here as it is very authentic, but I think the owner/staff could be a bit more friendly. Today in the restaurant, there was bugs in the vegetable soup. The restaurant removed that item from the bill, but we were told by a lady (maybe the owner?) that those bugs are from those "organic" vegetables and are edible. Ew... This place used to be called Peking Wok but now it's called Shanghai House, I'm not leaving a one star review out of anger and I'll explain my reasons. First off, getting seated was fast, however the waiter expected us to instantly know what we wanted without looking at the menus and after we asked for some time, we had to wait over fifteen minutes for another waiter to come by to order. After ordering I went to go wash my hands in the restroom, on my way there I saw three dishes of Kimchi (spicy Korean radish) sitting out on a counter with flies on them,I was disgusted but assumed the waiters would toss it, to my dismay, on the way back from the restroom, I watched a waiter in front of me take the dish and walk to my table and place the same dish that had flies over it that the waiter shooed away, in front of my mother as if it were perfectly good. Then our food didn't come out for about thirty five minutes, the food was also less than okay, we got the black bean paste noodles which were really just room temperature and very oily compared to other restaurants such as Royal Box or really just anywhere else and there wasn't any of the standard vegetables in it such as squash, onions, a side of sliced pickled radishes or etc, just noodles. Second dish was marinated fried chicken, wasn't bad but it was just fried chicken smothered in sweet and sour sauce, a little misleading with the "marinated" because it was literally just sweet and sour sauce. After the meal was over we were waiting for a waiter and keep in mind no one ever checked on us during the entire meal, and we waited about twenty minutes, not a single waiter came by so we were forced to walk up to the register where we passed by three waiters chatting and laughing it up. Then when trying to pay, the cashier gets handed many receipts with cards and starts paying those off first while we waste trying to pay, she literally stops our transaction I kid you not, for ten minutes doing other customers checks. I went there with my mom yesterday for first time. We ordered sweet & spicy prawns, lian shang pi, and hot & spicy seafood noodle soup. The sweet & spicy prawns and lian shang pi was not bad, but hot and spicy seafood noodle soup was so bad. We couldn't taste nothing. The worst part was the customer service here. When we sit down, we saw two waitresses talking about our table and stares at us. They make us really uncomfortable while eating our foods. So, we want to check out and leave. The long hair with ponytail waitress helped us check out but she was so rude and make us never want to come here again. She was complaining us about how much we tip them and told us that if everything was good then we need to tip them more then 15%. We also saw she talked with another waitress or staff about how much we tip them and show our receipt. All the staffs here was so rude. They never came to our table except bring the foods and they looks down us whole time when we asked them for something. I recommend just order the foods for to-go.!!! read more

You don't come here for the service nor ambiance. You come here for some good Shanghainese food. I would know if they are authentic or not but they are tasty and different from the 'Chinese' food elsewhere. Ordered kaofu... so good! Vegetarian (seitan like) dish, with mushroom and black fungus. Sweet and fun texture kind of like spongy tofu. We also ordered the rice cake with pickled veggies and pork. Very light and flavorful at the same time. Braised pork belly was very tasty too with five spice and dark sauce. Something that looks difficult and time consuming to make. The steamed shrimp is ok. Very simple dish and pricey for the tiny shrimp size. The popcorn chicken was a little too doughy. Love the rice balls dessert with fermented rice. So unique. Would be a 3.5 star place for me as not all the dishes are consistently good and quite pricey... all in the high teens and exclude white rice (separate order) or we would like to come more often. read more

We sat down at 6:45 on Saturday night and ordered 4 main dishes right away. One and a half hours later, at 8pm, we were still waiting for the last dish, despite asking them repeatedly about it. We finally cancelled the last dish at 8:15 and will never come back again. The food is alright, but not worth waiting 1.5 hours. Can't understand why it takes so long for them to cook, the restaurant was not full anyway. Nobody really apologized for wasting our time. If this was still Peking wok I would definitely give it 5 stars. However they went through new ownership and our visit after wasn't as good. We were there with three of our friends before a movie. We ordered our food and I ordered my favorite jajjangmyun (black bean noodle). We got most of our food and everyone started eating and I figured my noodles would be around shortly. I waited and then I asked a passing bus boy to check on my order. Shortly after I got my noodles. However, there must have been a misunderstanding because a little while after another bowl of noodles came out but of course I didn't order a second. They took it back but after we were finished another guy came out with another bowl of jajjangmyun. I explained that I did not order another bowl but I was checking on my original order because of the delay. I figured all was good when we got the bill but when my friend looked it over she noticed that we were almost charged twice for a dish. None of us know or read Chinese but one of the items had a x2 next to it and we only ordered one of each plate. They almost charged us for two jajjangmyun. They did correct it with no issue but we almost didn't catch it which was a bit annoying. My friend's brother was visiting from out of town and offered so generously to pay for the entire meal which we argued against but we compromised with us paying the tip. I work in the service industry and make tips and a good portion is in cash so I told him I would leave cash. He signs the bill and I proceed to grab my cash to leave on the table when the waitress comes back and tell my friend that he didn't tip. Again, I work in the service industry where about 40% or so of my wages comes from tips, however I would never ask or demand anyone to tip me. There is just something incredibly rude about it. (It's also incredibly rude not to tip FYI) I'm sorry lady. Your $15 tip just turned into $10! I must be honest and say that they do have some of the best jajjangmyun and sweet and sour dishe beef/pork. I will return for the food but from now on it's takeout only! Formerly Peking Wok it is now Shanghai House. And it's bad. We arrived for an 11:30 lunch and the woman barked that they don't open until 11:30. It was 11:26. There were 6 of us. I ordered off the dinner menu rice noodles. She returned with her sour demeanor (she has zero warmth or any business being around customers) and informed me they don't have the dish. I replied it's on the menu. "We don't have." I asked why and she said they don't have it. Rice noodles are a staple in Asian cuisine! I am gluten intolerant and settled for steamed broccoli with out the bok choy as she said I couldn't have it. In her nasty sour demeanor. I went to the front desk and inquired why it's on the menu. He said they don't serve it any longer. Yet it's on the menu!! The rest of the meals were lack luster and one was downright terrible. Crispy Noodles which is the kind of crispy snack thing. Absurd. I was born and raised in Shanghai. If you are looking for authentic Shanghaiese cuisine in Seattle area, Shanghai House is your best option. The servers and chef can all speak Shanghaiese dialect and Mandarin. The spring rolls is my favorite appetizer. The fried rice with salted pork and vegetables is a traditional and popular dish in Shanghai area. I order that almost every time I am there. Do not expect an American style service. I wish I could give zero star for this restaurant, but I couldn't. I had horrible customer service here before, not once but several times, so I tried my best to avoid this restaurant even it's only few blocks away from my place. However, we only had 45 mins until Seahawks game, and I was craving for Chinese food, so I wanted give it another try. When we walked into the restaurant, there were three servers, but they were all ignoring our existence. I had to waive one of the server down to sit down after 8 minutes of waiting. Oh by the way, they didn't even say hi or greeting us at all. They don't even give you eye contact and doesn't even smile or anything. As we set down, we already knew what we liked to order, but the servers did not come to our table for another 10minutes, so my husband had to call the server to let him know that we are ready to order. He asked us if we want to drink tea or water, and I said, "can we get both please?" I guess I made him really upset by asking tea and water together? I actually threw the chopsticks on the table and walked away. He didn't even response yes or no, not even a word, and just walked away. I could not stay in that place anymore, and I was getting mad at myself for giving an another try for this place. My husband wanted to eat since we were already in there, but I couldn't spend MY MONEY to make myself horrible. There were many reviews about bad customer service here, but I guess the owner do not care it. It is a very good Shanghainese style restaurant! Today is our first time to find it, the owner says they just opened last month. We are from Shanghai so we can tell their taste is very Shanghai style. The service is good, owner is the chef. He and his staff are very nice to customers. You feel very welcome there. We got the Shanghai style Cai-Pao-Fan, they don't have it on the menu but I want it so bad, the owner surprisingly made just for us! We also order Hong-Shao-Rou and Xun-Yu. They are all good! Not only did I reduce the tip amount but will AVOID this place as much as possible in future! Even after explaining the Rey of party was minutes away, and I was prepared to start offering high-priced alcohol, the still would not seat 2 of us! Me and two friends decided to give this place a try and the common consensus between the three of us gives us this rating. As we entered, the first thing I observed was the fish tank behind the front desk. The dirty tank looked like it had been abandoned for months and it felt like neither the owners nor fish wanted it to be there. We were seated at a table next to an island of fake plants hovering above us. Having plants as decor for a restaurant is not uncommon but it also is a dust magnet. I swiped my finger across one leaf and it was exactly as I suspected. Definitely a negative sign when trying to enjoy a meal. Before I even get to the food, I have to comment about the slow and sub par service. We were not greeted by any waiter/waitress and we had to ask for water after putting in our order. There were three of us but the server only provided two napkins. Surely we believed that it was some sort of mistake and more napkins would be on their way, but that was not the case. To top it off, we had to ask for spoons AFTER all the dishes were served and the waiter had left to not bother us. We ordered shrimp fried rice, mapo tofu, mandarin chicken wings, and black bean sauce noodles. The shrimp fried rice was definitely underwhelming. By no means did this mean that it tasted bad (its pretty difficult to mess up fried rice). If I did a blind taste test of their fried rice and with a fast food chain like Panda Express, I would be hard pressed to find a difference. See how that may be a problem? The mapu tofu was overly salty and more difficult to eat as time went on. It also did not help that the waiter did not bother to check in on us and never refill water. With a dish so salty, I was surprised that it does not come with a side of rice. Also, if you look at mapu tofu on the menu and think its a vegetarian option, it is not. The mandarin chicken wings were very saucy and the best option of the four by far. The sauce wasn't overly sweet or salty and the chicken was decently cooked. Be sure to have extra napkins when you order this. The black bean sauce noodles were the worst of the four and it was not even close. The portion was shameful for its price and the sauce tasted like it was watered down. It is a shame that there are not many other places around Bellevue that serve black bean sauce noodles so when someone in the area craves it, they come to this place out of convenience. If you want the best black bean sauce noodles around, go to Sahm Gook Jih Palace in Lynnwood and you will understand what I am talking about. There are far better options in terms of all three categories: taste, portion, and price. There is nothing unique about this Chinese restaurant that makes me want to come back. The quality of service is on par with the food itself. If you want low quality food that will fill you up, go to a fast food chain before you think about coming here - your wallet will thank you for it. read more

Worst customer service!!! We walked in and noone came to take our orders. So we literally went to grab someone from the kitchen. It took us 30min to order and the food took forever. No water was given until you ask and the server never came by once to check. We got up to get our own chopsticks, napkins etc. This place has good food but because of the service, we are not going back here. Me and my bf are Chinese, and he is a crazy Shanghai food fans, so we came this restaurant, and it is SO GOOD! We heard a lot of people complained that the serving is bad, but it is actually not as bad as what other people say (probably it is depends on who serve you). So we order 百叶结红烧肉,咸肉菜饭，响油鳝糊 and 荠菜馄饨 (sorry I do not know the English name...). So my bf thinks their dumplings are not very good, and other food that we ordered are good to order again. I've been frequenting this restaurant for 20 yrs now, previously when it was Peking. I loved the food then...and now with new ownership... I love the food still. The Korean menu still exists, however with the new owners, it's slightly different but still comes recommended. I was really impressed with the Shanghai menu. We have been here 3 times in the last month and truly enjoyed the food, ambience and quick service. We are super 'white on white' people and really do like the 'Americanized' Chinese food element. I'm extremely allergic to MSG and, each time, the staff have made recommendations to avoid that at all costs. Yes, it does limit us yet we so enjoy the variety of choices offered w/o MSG. Last night was a big b-day celebration for our daughter and we ordered take-out - huge order over $100. Everything was on time, hot, and nothing forgotten, including condiments, napkins, and chopsticks.
