Just had lunch with my family here on a Sunday afternoon after catching a show at Hulu Theater. With all honesty, I never had a feeling where I felt I wasted my money for eating out, but this has to be the first. The prices here are incredibly high for the portion that you get. I ordered a spicy fried chicken with Garlic, I'm assuming this is called Khanpunngi correct me if I am wrong. I've never seen so little chicken on my plate for 25 dollars. Also the chicken is not fresh at all. The moment I bit into I knew that it was either frozen or they're using very old chicken. The service was OK, but the food is was not worth writing home about. We also ordered the beef pho which was OK, but not worth mentioning either. It was very slow when were there. My wife ordered something else on the menu which was a rice combo, which was also terrible, you can clearly tell they use frozen seafood medley. $70.00 for terrible food and small portions. This review is about my last visit here last Thursday. This time the service was extremely terrible. First, I started out with their free spring rolls, this time they only gave 2 pieces instead of 4. The reason why I was very disappointed was because they served us the spring rolls first, they forgot to serve my water, beer and side dishes. I had to ask over 3 times for it, like are you kidding me how can you forget to serve us that and don't you see our table has nothing on it but spring rolls? I come here just for the black bean noodles (jja jiang myun) and spicy seafood noodle soup combo. Not the best noodles, but it's good comfort food and will hit the spot. For some reason, I feel there aren't that many places (in K-town, at least) that have jja jiang myun, and that's one of my favorite things. I'd only come here for the noodles though. Every entree I've had so far has been disappointing. Yesterday I tried the triple combo with the 2 noodles (jja jiang myun, spicy seafood noodle soup) and a sweet and sour pork, and that was a mistake. Nice decor. I walked in with a stroller and an employee helped me. To my left was the host who asked me how many... I said me and the baby. We than were escorted to our seats in the far back. The waitress took a minute too long to notice I was ready to order. When she did come, she asked if I wanted a drink after I ordered and I responded no. A man came from the kitchen and dropped off our food. It WAS SO DELICIOUS! We went around 1:40PM so it was lunch time and ordered the vegetable pad Thai that was displayed to $10. She kept coming back to clean up tissues and stuff. But never asked how the food was or anything else. Never opened her mouth to me She didn't ask if the food was good or anything of that matter. After checking in to Yelp, I notice we have a free spring roll. She asked to show my phone to the manager, came back and said it's only for ONE free spring roll. She then completed it as redeemed and we are now waiting for it. After I enjoyed the spring roll, the check to watch given to us. I paid and the manager came back and said, thank you gratitudy was not included . I didn't say anything. I left a small tip then left . I think it's rude to ask for a tip, and the "waitress"/ busser didn't give me any service but clear my table. I didn't have the energy to discuss this but it's just a heads up. Came here because we were starving and it looked like a good option. I have no complaints with the service or restaurant atmosphere - it was as expected, not exceptional but fine, no issues. The food however sucked, to put it simply. I am usually generous with my reviews. I very rarely go lower than 3 stars. But it was just not enjoyable. I can't even say it was OK. The spring rolls were very greasy. I ordered the pad thai - worst pad thai I have ever eaten. The hot and sour soup was OK, probably the best part of the meal. They do have a bunch of vegetarian options. I was pretty bummed that the dumplings weren't veg - they were pork and veg and you had to get it with both. Oh, check in here to get a free order of overly greasy spring rolls. Honestly, with so many restaurant options in the area, don't bother. I wouldn't even order take-out from here. read more

It seems like most of the people who've reviewed this place have been disappointed with the quality of the service, but I've rarely had authentic Korean-Chinese dishes with attentive and friendly staff (at least in the NY/NJ area). The unfortunate part of this is that the servers aren't there to help you through the menu or provide a comfortable eating experience, but the bright side is that they deliver you anything you need quickly and promptly (we asked for extra yellow radish, and got it immediately.) For anyone else that is always constantly and painfully divided between ordering jajangmyun (black bean noodles) and jjamppong (spicy seafood soup noodles), they've got a perfect combination that lets you gorge on both: the jamjamyun! This dish is pretty hard to find in NYC (there are some places nearby in Bergen that have it), but it's one of my favorites. The noodles were perfectly cooked and long (an indicator of good quality) the soup/sauce were great. The seafood portions and meat portions in both noodle dishes were generous, and the dish is just the right amount of filling. I've been here twice, 2 days in a row in fact. The 1st time, I ordered a Korean BBQ item which was sweet to my surprising. It was no different than Jap BBQ, which I found disappointing because I don't like sweet meat. There's an overwhelming amount of garlic in their japchae. The garlic flavor was so strong that I couldn't even finish it. The next day, I ordered the lobster boat which comes with sushi. The sushi was ok, the lobster was too salty and not enough flavor by itself. The lobster body came mixed with mango pieces & other stuff I can't remember. Got a chance to try out this new Korean-Chinese restaurant in Ktown after seeing pictures of it in Time Out New York. Apparently it's in the space space as a former restaurant of the same breed called Kum Ryong that also specializes in handmade noodles. Perhaps it's by the same owner who needed a new face, but whatever it is, the food is solid and the atmosphere is upbeat. I went there with a group of probably 10 people, and the wait was totally manageable on a Tuesday night. The service was great despite the fact that some of us were already really toasty from a happy hour stint elsewhere. I had my head down for most of the meal and they put up with that no problem. =P We ordered a bunch of food, including jajangmyeon (sp??) but I have to say that I only remember trying 2.5 things. A bite of what I thought was orange chicken? (Tasty) a whole lot of noodles with seafood, which was really good. The taste was subtle, with a slight kick of mushrooms and a good amount of actual seafood. The noodles were firm and fresh. Last thing I remember eating was fried rice with XO sauce, which was my pick. Though I only had two bites of that because it must have been that good that the plate was cleaned up within 10 minutes. I'm gonna have to go back again, sober... The decor was indeed lavish, and they were totally pushing the whole chinesey feel. The restaurant was plesantly packed and they stay open pretty damn late, until 2am?? There are also "bar" seats that faces the wall, which is covered with silk brocade. We stopped by here to try the black bean sauce noodles with pork - ja jiang mein. They were decent, but the amount of pork in there I could count on one hand, it seems, unless they just pureed it or something... There's a combination, N-4, I think, that combines the N-1 black bean sauce noodles w/pork with the N-3 spicy soup, and people seem to like that a lot. The doorway is cold - they'd do better by putting up a cloth in that open hole wall that is up front. But they have modern-style decorations and not too bad otherwise. Serving size is very decent. We easily, amongst the four of us, couldn't finish three dishes of noodles/soup, but we aren't large people, either, so that could factor into it, plus eating at 2p. Groups larger than 4 might have quite a wait for a table, though. Three types of ban chan - the japanese yellow radish, the kimchee, and pickled mustard root. This place is a favorite of my sister's so was happy to try this out with my family after a day of sightseeing in Rockefeller Center. The restaurant is Korean with a Chinese flair and we came for the jajangmyeon, which was filling and inexpensive. My dad likes the sweet and sour pork, which I agree, is probably one of their best dishes. The pork was fried perfectly, crispy and non oily. We also got the jampong, which had huge shrimp, mussels and little lobster bits in it. The fried dumplings were a hit with the toddler. Barley tea was very good. Bathrooms are a little cramped and I am not going to lie, while in line for the bathroom, you have a view of the hallway into the kitchen. I am a big believer in not looking at the man behind the curtain (to quote Wizard of Oz), especially in NYC establishments. Also, I do think that the staff is probably much nicer to groups with Korean speaking clientele, based on the reviews. I do like that the staff treated my parents with respect. Maybe I chose the wrong thing. But I left with a very bad taste in my mouth - literally. I chose the very safe pad Thai. Pad Thai has never failed me. But the dish I got here was just not good. I don't know if it's the type of noodles they use (they were darker than usual) or the kind of beef it was that I had or if something was missing, but I didn't enjoy a single bite. My friend got the sweet and sour chicken dish. It came with white rice and miso soup, which he didn't touch so I had some. He seemed to enjoy his chicken. We shared a veggie spring roll dish. 3.5 stars A couple of years ago, I learned from my Korean friend that ja jang myun is a comfort food, one that can be whipped up quickly and cheaply, sometimes with leftovers that are then coated with its thick black bean paste. Since then, I occasionally feel the need to eat ja jang myun the same way other people crave for white rice or mac n cheese. There's just something about the slickness of the noodles and the flavor of the sauce that reels me in. Shanghai Mong is a Chinese and Korean fusion restaurant frequented by a diverse crowd. Of course I ordered the ja jang myun and loved it. Their banchan is unfortunately limited to 3 dishes (edadame, radish, and kimchi). We also ordered other fusion items off their menu but I was too busy enjoying my ja jang myun ($9, $12 for seafood) to try them. Mm!mm!mmm!!! Wet here on a whim and took advantage of the lunch special. They are known for their noodles so 2 out of the 3 of us have it a try and it was absolutely delightful. To start off, our server was super adorable, patient and helpful in providing suggestions and explaining the dishes. The staff was very friendly and made our time there very pleasant. The reggae and calypso was also a nice touch The food was soooo good. Thank god that sharing is caring cause I was going in on my friends plates Lolol. Its like I married a beautiful Korean girl and my mom taught her how to cook. I ordered a spicy seafood noodle dish but what came out to me was: Seafood fra Diavolo! Yikes! Although the fried veggie dumplings were VERY good, I could see before even opening the containers that the pad thais I ordered would be trash. It's like they literally boiled rice noodles with vegetables in it and served that as "pad thai"? I've had better food in the Sahara and all we ate was locust! I came here because Pho 32 next door has a "grade pending" for their health inspection (i.e. they FAILED). This is the only other place I could find nearby that has pho. It is by far, the weirdest pho I've ever had: - They don't have soup spoons. Oh man, eating with a regular spoon took forever - The meat was definitely made for the korean grill. The beef tastes different than pho beef - The broth was... well, you could have told me it was NOT pho and I'd believe you - There's no basil leaves It's served in a huge bowl, with cilantro and bean sprouts and jalapeno on the side. Costs $10.99. Only if you're dying for pho, come here. Otherwise, make your way elsehwere. Service is awkward as expected from an asian establishment. A terrible choice for Chinese/Korean food. Food and service were both subpar. First off, no onions and radish after you place your order. Those are stalwarts of Chinese/Korean starter appetizers that work into the main course itself. Portion sizes for both jajangmyun and jjamppong were incredibly small. Jajamyun was the better dish of the two, doesn't mean anything besides it was better than a crappy dish. The jjamppong was overly salty and soup was lukewarm. Also missing from the dish was the usual large shrimp with head and tail. In substitute were the tiny frozen shrimps. That wasn't a strong move by management. No candied sweets at the end of the meal, another staple missing in addition to the onion/radish. Service was slow, asked for water twice before receiving it. This is one of the few Korean Chinese restaurants around with what I can only describe is very interesting and peculiar decoration. Waiting for a table you may be seated at the round plush seating in the middle of the restaurant where you can observe all the other patrons eating. The bar seating in the round area are all decorated with a mirror directly in front of your chair stating "You are a princess". I guess in their eyes, I'm a princess. Their noodle dishes are tasty and I would highly recommend the Chicken Noodles or Black Bean Noodles. On the west coast, at least in the Bay Area, it's widely known that pho is THE hangover cure. I guess that's not the case in NYC since all the pho places here don't open till 11 or 12. We thought we were in luck when we found this place but my bf was very dissatisfied with his pho. It didn't have the right broth and the meat was over seasoned. He only took a few bites and didn't even want to finish it. I don't think a restaurant should put something on their menu if it's not what it should be. Pho is really hard to mess up. Beef, noodles, broth, done. But seeing as this place is Korean and not Vietnamese I guess that could be why. (Negative stars for the pho) I on the other hand was please with my wonton soup. I love Shanghai Mong!! Because I love noodles! They are popular for their jjampong and jjangmyun 2 in 1, cost: $9.95 very reasonable compared to the rest of Koreantown. In my opinion the jjampong (seafood noodle soup) is way better than jajangmyun (black bean noodle). Though it is up to personal preferences. I do like how I can switch around between the two noodles. The jjampong is not spicy at all and it is just delicious and I love the noodles they use. You get a variety of ingredients from seafood to vegetables. The jajangmyun has a good amount of sauce and onions. Just from these two noodles it is very fulfilling. In the beginning you get 3 appetizers while you wait for the food. I've been there countless of times and every time as I walk in someone greeted me. The appetizer, drinks, food always came out quickly. It is 24 hours and I did notice that they have bubble tea, which was interesting and it looked quite good. I came here as a group of 4 on a Friday night. We decided on this restaurant since this one did not have a wait (maybe for good reason). PROS: I appreciated the fact that you can order the Jjam Jja Myun, which is half black bean noodles and half spicy seafood noodle soup. I always want to get both of these dishes and was very happy that I could do that here. The portions are pretty large and you will be full just from this dish. CONS: -I thought it was weird that we were not served side dishes even though I saw other tables have them. Where is the yellow pickled radish that comes with the black bean noodles?! -There was no water given to us initially--I had to ask for the water. There was a lady at the table next to us who started coughing for whatever reason and had to stand up and approach the waitress for a cup of water. I feel like that should never be the case. -The service was pretty terrible. They came around very few times and we had to ask for everything. The employees were literally running around pretty much the whole time I was there which looks bad on them and shows how understaffed they are. -When we first ordered, I had forgotten to claim my free spring rolls with Yelp check-in. When I asked for it to be added, he seemed irritated and didn't readily put that in for me. I know the restaurant was busy, but I don't think that should compromise the service we received. The worst part is that he agreed to add that to our order, but we never received it!! False promises. Overall, I thought the food was alright but the service was bad.
