This place is fantastic! Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was mostly dead--which seems a shame considering there is an abundance of comfy seating, indoors and outside. Love that this place is walking distance from my home. We regularly walk our dogs here and sit outside to enjoy the coffee and grilled cheeses. The owner is friendly and the staff always takes time to engage you in casual conversation. It truly feels like a neighborhood hangout. Not to mention the stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches are delicious. My husband and I often split one because they can be heavy in the morning - but I usually regret not getting my own. 11/10 would recommend. read more

We stopped in for an early lunch on a Saturday. I had a Smokin Pig and my wife had a Divine Order. Both sandwiches were incredible and the tomato soup was fantastic. Super cute Cafe & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches! Plenty of 2 hour parking in the front, and a good amount of tables and outlets around. They have a ton of different "grilled cheese" sandwiches, and the coffee was excellent. The staff I spoke to were super friendly and laid back, and the owner is well loved by her regulars. There is also a small outdoor garden portion to the Cafe. Music choices are pretty great, nice for a cafe but not too obtrusive or in your face. I've never seen a place with this wide of a selection of Grilled Cheese sandwiches. Lots of interesting combinations and if you like spicy, several different types with habanero or jalapeños, bbq sauces and then things like pulled pork, steak, carnitas, etc. They were helpful steering me toward one that was still big on flavor but "won't make you want to take a nap after". I loved that honesty that some of them are great but are filling and rich enough that you'll want to nap after...maybe that's why they also have a whole coffee operation at the same counter, lol. read more

Great coffee, great food, but definitely don't look for a welcoming environment. A group of coworkers and I had just sat down to eat some of our sandwiches and drink coffee's for probably no more than five minutes and nobody else was even in the café - on a hot and smoky day in Sacramento the last thing anyone wants to have to do is go outside to eat, but that's exactly what the two girls requested us to do that were working there ...they said we were wayyyy too loud, and this was intentionally a quiet coffee shop?!? And if we wanted to talk like that we could go outside. This has never been the impression that I received up to this point of this coffee shop, and I don't have any intentions of going back - their coffee and food is good (not blowing my mind), but I like a place that I can enjoy the environment with my friends and have a simple conversation without being chastised by the two girls that work there. After Hot Italian closed, I began looking for a new place to grab a coffee on Sunday afternoons while taking my vintage ALFA Romeo out for a drive. Shift seemed an obvious choice. I like their coffee, food, car theme, and friendly staff. Today I stopped by, and began surveying the cool merchandise and auto memorabilia on the walls. There was an old, ALFA Romeo steering wheel hanging on a peg in front of me. Out of curiosity, I took it down to check it out. About then a woman, who I'm told is the owner's wife, walked in. Without a word, she unceremoniously plucked the wheel from my hands and put it back on its peg. I would understand if this were a museum, or if the wheel had much value. However, she could have been way more polite about it. I tried to strike up a friendly conversation with her. She mumbled something about being robbed and turned her back on me mid sentence. It seems like she's making the assumption that all her customers are thieves. That's probably not the best way to create a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere in your establishment. I believe her husband actually helped me push start my car once. He's a really nice guy. read more

I know it's a coffee shop but we came for the grilled cheese. Location is welcoming along with the staff. I love a good twist to a grilled cheese sandwich and this place has a whole menu of them. I ordered the You're cheesy Honey and my husband the Firehouse 20, both were delicious! Both were loaded with cheese, that Firehous 20 was generous on meat. We recently heard that this place had been voted the best grilled cheese in California. We were very happy with the menu options - we had the holy cacao and pbb&j, and both were great. Coffees were good too. It was pretty busy when we got there, so it took ~20-25 minutes to get our food, but we killed the time by sitting in the comfortable chairs, looking through magazines, drinking our coffee, etc. Overall a good experience, an we'd definitely go back to try other sandwiches on the menu. read more

I've had Shift Coffee House saved on my Yelp collection for over a year and I regret not coming here as soon as i came across it! As soon as I arrived I was greeted by who I believe was the owner and one of her workers. They were extremely friendly and a joy to talk to. I told them it was my first time at Shift & they both agreed I had to try the carrera (not on menu) as my first grilled cheese. They also recommended the Vietnamese cold brew & it didn't disappoint! Plenty of caffeine & a splash of condensed milk for some sweetness. I wish I had taken a picture of the carrera but I devoured it immediately. One of the top 3 meals I've had that was in between 2 pieces of bread! I will be back very soon to try one their sweet grilled cheeses. How does this place not have a perfect rating?! read more

Really cool spot with awesome indoor and outdoor seating. Do a lot of business meetings here, it's a good, quiet spot. Service is usually hit or miss. The Vietnamese Nitro Brew and Long Beach Lemonade are some of my personal favorites. Really unique menu both drink and food wise. Oh definitely try out a grilled cheese if you go! I was in the shop this past Saturday as this is one of my local hangouts and can I just say how I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Miss Dolly!! I have been meaning to do a review for quite some time and this morning I woke up with it heavy on my mind.... Now I see why. I was sitting at the bar enjoying my food and I must say that Dolly is always smiling and loves her customers' soo much that she knows them by name! I love her customer service!
