Fantastic Korean food in the heart of Grand Central Market. They're a relatively new vendor already having an impact on the character of this gastronomic wonderland. Their banchan is the claim to fame for good reason. You get a random assortment of three with their meat plates. I ordered the LA Galbi which was an immensely flavorful treat for the senses. The salty juices from the meat seep into the white rice while the aforementioned banchan each have a fermented kick to cut through the protein's richness while accentuating the rice. This place is one of several amazing businesses inside Grand Central Market in LA. This was our 1st time trying this place. It is family owned and operated. They have different types of Kimchi including the spiral radish kind. Im not sure if there is a specific name for it but it is my favorite. We got short rib plates, braised pork belly plate, and Korean fried chicken. Everything was full of flavor! The short ribs were a decent size portion and the meat was tender/juicy. The plate comes with rice, japchae, and kimchi. All delicious. The braised pork belly was very soft, tender and juicy. It went well with the japchae & kimchi in the plate. The Korean fried chicken is very much like popcorn chicken. I had spicy and non spicy. Both delicious! I highly recommend. As usual, I compliment them on their customer service. They are friendly and helpful. I did not feel rushed to place my order. I also appreciate that they had my large family order ready fairly quickly. read more

Banchan are served cold and the rice boxes weren't hot. Galbi- 3.5 stars Meat was served at room temperature. I'm not a huge fan of galbi - I prefer bulgogi. The flavour was good, the meat was decent with fatty bits (which is typical of galbi I believe). The rice box came with a few banchan and rice. Temple Tangsu - 3 stars I think this would have been much better if it was deep fried on the spot. Served at room temperature as well, so the batter was a bit on the hard side and the texture of the mushrooms was spongy/foamy. Nothing spectacular flavour-wise. We got a few banchan - the one with tiny fish, the radish, the chwinamul (wild mountain green), the white kimchi, and the seaweed japchae came with our rice boxes. All pretty good, say 3 stars. Not sure I would go back - I'd prefer a proper Korean restaurant where the food is freshly prepared. read more

Shiku is a welcome addition to Grand Central Market. They serve Korean food, which is unique among the market's vendors and scratched an itch I didn't even know I had. I recently stopped by for dinner. I came at the very end of the day - they literally put up the closed sign after I ordered - so they were out of most of the items on the menu, which was a bit of a bummer. But that's on me, not on them. I ordered the Doshirak (a plate meal) with pork belly, which came with white rice and three types of banchan. I also ordered Korean fried chicken (I got it spicy - which had a kick but wasn't overwhelming) and some fries in the interest of sating my appetite. The food was really good. All of the flavors were well developed, and the portions were large enough to fill me up without making me feel sick. The pork belly was meaty and fork tender. Pro tip - add a fried egg to your meal! It cost a little and added a lot. The service was friendly but was slow as molasses. Maybe it was because I was their last customer of the day, but it took a good 20+ minutes to get my food (keep in mind, this is a fast casual style establishment where you order at a counter and take your food to go), and I was literally the only person in line at the time. To get to my point, the price for the LA Galbi is not the best. Prices in general are a pretty hefty and leave me debating on whether or not I should continue eating here. This is my only con and why I won't give it the full 5 stars. Everything else is fantastic. With the food, every plate is flavorful and I enjoy coming back every time just to eat a different plate. My favorite is the chicken plate, fried mushrooms on the side, and a coke. Definitely recommend the mushrooms with any plate. I enjoy it every time to say the least. The kimchi fried rice is amazing and really wish I could mix and match with the other options. Honestly mouthwatering. The drinks are another big plus as they have a good selection of drinks. Their service is always friendly and helpful. I am not so familiar with Korean dishes, but the cashier is always quite helpful in letting me know more about the food. She is the red headed girl and is very kind and patient. In all, really quick to take and give me my order. Never had a problem. To summarize, I thoroughly enjoy coming here whenever I'm in the area, but the only thing that keeps me back are the prices. I take it that this food has that homemade style flair and is packed with flavor which can come with a heftier price. I figured I would play it safe and start with the regular. It was nice and hot when I got it and I appreciate that it was in a thick cardboard-type container- not a styrofoam one. Having just read the Yelp reviews regarding Shiku, it is very unfortunate, especially for restaurants, when customers who have complaints or issues FAIL TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION such feedback to the restaurant. The reason restaurants usually have only one shot with a new customer is due to the fact the customer does NOT immediately bring to the attention of the restaurant the issue. Rather the customer reverts to Yelp with a lousy review. Restaurants WANT AND NEED all feedback in order to provide the best possible experience. Restaurants that actually care will remedy the situation ASAP and insure that it is not repeated. As a frequent customer of Baroo and now Shiku, I can attest to the dedication of the Owners and staff in providing the best food and experience at reasonable prices. NO restaurant is perfect but the pursuit of perfection necessitates all feedback from customers. As you can see as well, Shiku has responded to the issues when brought to their attention. Frankly Yelp should require that any negative review be conditioned upon the reviewer having contacted the establishment to provide information on whatever had occurred and to determine if the issue had been resolved. Owners and staff who are dedicated and putting in extraordinary efforts during these challenging times deserve at least that amount of effort from reviewers and Yelp. Yes, it requires a modicum of more effort from Yelp and reviewers but it inures to the benefit of all involved, especially restaurants who ACTUALLY CARE like Shiku. Wanted to try this place out. Ordered some wings at 3:12pm and we were #28. Time goes by and noticed they called #29 #30, #31, #32. After that we go up they let us know they're out? I saw other chicken being handed out. We waited 25 minutes, they forgot about us. Also the chicken looks gross and not fresh. They leave it out on a big pan in the open and then refry on your order. I saw a lot coming out of a microwave in the back. I do not recommend. read more

Put simply, this is fantastic Korean food. All of the meat dishes we had (kalbi and maekjuk chicken) were tender, well-flavored, and mouth-watering, and I don't know what was in the Korean fried chicken, but it was so cracklingly-crisp and well seasoned that I could have eaten a mountain of just that. But where I think this place really shines is in the banchan. We had the musaengchae, mu namul, myulchi, jinmichae, and gochu chamchi, and pretty much every dish blew our minds. Really cool twists and touches, like using a perilla seed dressing and shishito in the mu namul and myulchi respectively, took dishes that I'd eaten a million times before and brought out complementary flavors and textures that were truly spectacular. This is another homerun from the folks behind Baroo/Baroo Canteen, and looks like it'll be my go-to place in GCM! read more
