The sushi is very average. The prices seem to have gone up recently. They do have a seemly large variety of rolls but they are all basically tuna. Not sure what is going on here but this place has changed and not for the better. Used to be our favorite for take out sushi, however our last couple of experiences have been very disappointing. The last straw was tonight. I opened a container of tempura and it reeked of old rancid oil. It was was too greasy to eat (oil not hot enough?). The batter was uneven and extremely thick and lumpy. And for vegetables there were just very large junks of carrot and white potato. And, the sushi we ordered was ruined because they had packed it directly on top of the hot food so it was steamed. read more

Sigh. Let's just say, I've given Ishi Shima Sushi 2 chances to impress me, and I'm never coming back. The only good thing I can say is that the quantity of food in the lunch combination is plentiful. It only goes downhill from there. First of all, if you're looking for authentic Japanese sushi, go somewhere else. This is one of the Korean-owned "sushi" restaurants in the Bay Area. There are rolls on the menu that you'd never find in a Japanese sushi restaurant and the waitresses don't speak Japanese. Strike 1. Next, service is really slow, even when the restaurant is not too busy. Strike 2. Finally, the quality of food is not good. Tempura has waaaay too much batter and the Tonkatsu was made with thin-sliced pork and was badly overcooked. I've never had Tonkatsu with more panko crust than meat that was so tough to chew. If you're not wanting to pay high end sushi prices but want the high end fresh sushi taste, this is the place for you. It doesn't beat Blowfish on Santana Row...but really not much does. Shima Sushi's prices are moderate and if you're a true sushi lover like myself, you'll appreciate the freshness of the fish and the portions you receive. My favorite is the Salmon Sashimi....very delicious. Also, the ginger and wasabi is excellent. I also recommend the teriyaki salmon. read more

The 12 pcs shashimi plate is $15.99, but the shashimi is cut so tiny that 4 pcs combine is still smaller than one slice of shashimi at any decent restuarant. $40 dollars for lunch and I'm still hungry. New owners and staff. First thing I noticed was that all the nice booths were replaced with tables crammed next to each other. Server took our order but forgot to enter into the POS system. When we noticed other tables being served we asked about our order. Oh, sorry, I forgot. When the food came out, she had forgotten three orders of sushi and the salad. I've eaten here a few times for lunch. I don't order any of the lunch specials and prefer to order off the regular menu. There is a pretty large list of combination rolls and Nigiri to choose from. I have liked all the things I have tried and the fish is fresh. The service is pretty quick, and polite, but not always good. It depends on how busy they are. Here are a few things that keep me from giving it a higher rating: It's a bit pricey and I rarely get out of there for less than $30 for lunch. That gets me a combination roll or two (depending on what I order), a Nigiri roll of some kind, and an ice tea (which isn't very good). Once tax and tip is factored in, yep, close to $30 for lunch- ouch! It is a small space and seating can get pretty tight. It's located in a strip mall, so the overall ambiance leaves something to be desired. The whole atmosphere is a bit frazzled, so it's not a relaxing place to spend time.Overall, it's an acceptable place to enjoy a tasty combination roll. It's a good sushi place for fans, but probably not fanatics. read more

We eat lunch here all the time. Really good sushi: fresh w/ nice size pieces, staff is very friendly, Bento Box is priced well & the food is always great. The only reason I gave 4 stars vs 5 stars is that if work is crazy & we are running a little late for lunch and arrive @ 1:45, they turn us away...?!? The hrs say "until 2pm" and we are regulars so we did expect a little better service. If they stop serving @ 1:45 than it should be posted - not 2pm. They quoted me $2 extra for brown rice instead of white rice. I grudgingly accepted even though it seemed a bit extortionate. After I ordered my meal they came back and said $2.50 more after I already agreed to the original price! They refused to budge even when I threatened to not have lunch there over that 50 cent difference! Insane! This was for a plain "side" of rice, mind you, not rice that was included as part of a recipe or anything - and it was a substitution for white rice - not a unique, separate order. They're trying to charge a quarter of the price of the meal for something that literally costs them about 2 cents! No use in having a "lunch special" at that point! Restaurants typically charge about $1 for the trouble or have no charge for brown rice substitute. I ended up having lunch at Chef Li next door where they have NO EXTRA CHARGE for brown rice substitution! What a difference! read more

The place is close to home, so we go there often. The specialty rolls - Friends, Voff, and more - are quite good. I am a sashimi lover, and while the selection here might be a little limited, it has always been very fresh. After the 3rd time or so they get to know you and make you feel quite welcome. I've been going to to Ishi Shima Sushi for a couple years now, almost weekly. I love this place! Two things to note, I've only been here for dinner and I don't get overly fancy rolls, or teriyaki dishes, I'm more of a sashimi person. The 5 stars is for the sashimi! The fish has always been fresh and melts like butter in your mouth. That combined with friendly service makes it top notch in my book. I've have ordered other things and the only thing I wasn't very impressed with was the teriyaki sauce (it tastes like pure sugar to my palette). Really disappointing! I have eaten here twice in the past, and I have thought their food was meh. I had dinner with a friend here tonight, and will not be going back. Ordered 3 specialty rolls, and when they arrived they were small and overpriced, $42.00 without drinks. One roll I specifically asked to have made with real crab instead of "imitation crab" and they didn't get the order right. When I said something to the server, she said "oh, yes... sorry". She was aware of the problem when she served us the roll, and she did not offer to remake the roll as we had ordered it, nor did she offer to adjust our bill. We ordered a Dragon Roll that was marginal at best, and the Unagi sauce that was supposed to be over it was barely perceptible and tasted watered down. C'mon, what was that? Really? The Salmon Volcano Roll arrived with imitation crab rather than the real crab I requested, and was covered with "House Sauce", that was really unappealing. Last ordered another roll that was totally blah, and that was plated with nothing, no wasabi, no ginger. The place was practically empty but I was not able to get the servers attention. If they are trying to save money by skimping on ingredients and portions, maybe that's working for them, but it will cost them $$$ in the long run. Recently moved into the neighborhood and discovered the place by chance. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised. The food is great and the staff is very friendly. They offer a great menu selection and you can ask for special prepared items. It is a bit pricey, but the quality and portions help justify the cost. One thing they can do is to offer fountain drinks instead of canned sodas and reduce the price and offer free refills. I would love for them to open up earlier too. With all this in mind I highly recommend this place. read more
