Took my parents here for lunch and was pleased with the healthier food options offered. It's not the diner of the past as the average main dish looked to be around $18-$20. Surprisingly, tables offered a bottle of "organic ketchup"! My husband ordered the "Warm roasted local veggie salad." He loves beets and Brussels sprouts. Sadly, it didn't come with the pecans or dried apricots as advertised but most disappointing was discovering the veggies were all boiled and cold, not roasted or warm. (Insert sad face emoji) On the flip side, I tried the plant forward Thai cauliflower quinoa pasta. It was very tasty! My folks enjoyed a burger and the cod. While the cod was done well, we found the accompanying quinoa to be a bit more salty than we expected. Otherwise the plate presentations were all lovely and appetizing. Rosé: Who doesn't love a glass of wine with dinner? Cookies & cream milkshake: SO good, we don't often get to indulge on milkshakes so this was truly a treat. Steak frites: Perfectly prepared with notes of basil and pile of spinach paired with hot fries. Steak and eggs: Zack loved this, his usual go-to order as well. While not a huge fan of the Silver Diner, we've been here a few times over the years, especially for breakfast/brunch. They have done a nice job with outdoor seating areas in both the front and rear of the place. the food, always solid, offers a wide variety of options. I particularly like that they have turkey based options on several of their breakfast proteins (e.g. Turkey Bacon, Turkey Sausage). A hit for us this trip was the Double Stack Breakfast burger, that sports two patties, bacon, ham AND an egg. Comes with a side of fries, so this breakfast is FILLING. They might need to add a few more staff, as it seemed our server was getting more than his fair share of steps in, with the back and forth to the kitchen to the outdoors. Finally I took the plunge and went with my boyfriend for a saturday brunch. Everything from the moment we entered to the time we left was amazing. The staff was amazing and on point! This place really amazes me. I should say these places since there are many of them though they are incredibly consistent. The atmosphere suggests traditional diner food that may clog your arteries after the main meal. Instead the menu is incredibly thoughtful with so many options that are delicious and healthy. They do a great job sourcing ingredients from local sources. This trip it was a crab eggs Benedict with green tea and the Chesapeake Bloody Mary- spicy style. Changing their aspect what they were (still phenomenal) to farm ti table was a really boss boss move. So commendation on that. Had the summertime Cod, which was truly amazing in every sense of the word, so having our service up to absolute par and some, had us blown away. When I go to a diner, I expect to be disappointed. The food is typically highly mediocre and lacking originality. However, Silver Diner is not your standard diner. To start, their menu options are varied and truly have something for everyone. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had not one but a multitude of vegetarian and vegan options. They had substitutions available to make things gluten free and advertised certain meals as healthier. We ordered delivery from here, due to COVID, and everything was well packaged and presented. The Warm Roasted Local Veggie Salad was fantastic, though I would have preferred fresh fruit over the dried apricots. But all the flavors were great and I was happy to have a salad option that actually contained a lot of veggies, versus just being a regular unhealthy meal simply put on lettuce. It was a little light so next time I would probably add a protein to it. I also had the Oaxaca Omelette on a separate occasion and really enjoyed it. The fruit was also good, but the toast would have been nice with a side of jelly (which I could not request after the food was already delivered). The Baby Spinach, Feta, & Cremini Mushroom Omelette is fantastic as well, and likely the better of the two. The feta made is much more indulgent. Plus it comes with an entire bagel - you will not leave hungry after eating this. I would definitely come back here if just looking for food in the area. From the looks of the diner I expected the kind of place that offers up greasy burgers, tasty shakes and servers that are dressed like over the top Happy Days characters and are purposely "rude". I was only partially correct. Burgers and shakes? Yes! But no rude staff and adversely, some of the nicest staff I have ever seen. 50s style interior complete with tabletop juke boxes for .25. And the servers DO wear a very simple version of old timey looking garb (black pants and white shirts) but nothing over the top. What really impressed was the diverse menu They offer all the classics but an astonishing selection of modern and healthy meals. I had an appetizer of crispy brussel sprouts (served with apricots and cranberry which was a first) with cinnamon chipotle dipping sauce that was delish. For my main I order from the healthy side and asked the server for a recommendation between the cod and salmon. Cod it was and it was a winner. Tender flaky and juicy and served with asparagus and ancient grains. All winning. So glad I was staying next door and decided to walk over for convenience. 5/15/20 this place is a former shell of itself. Two manager working hard putting together orders while two cooks prepare the food. The dining area is closed to the public as are the bathrooms. Every other seating is taken apart so there is a large spacing between people should the place reopen in the future. The managers I met were stressed it seems and were not the friendliest of people I have met. Still, the only thing I did not like is not having my question answered about an item on the menu. I was ignored when it came to my question. If I had not been with my wife, I would have left the store and not gotten anything. I look forward to when business is back to normal, because right now, it sucks. I ordered it with American Cheese but received cheddar. When I placed my order I requested mayo but it was not received with the order and I had to search out a waitstaff member to bring me the mayo. How is this my first time here? I've always been an ihop person so walking in here was like Bad and Bougee music vid dos. I was head pounding, need to vomit hungover and really just wanted soup. But my friends took me here so I could try their vegan egg dishes. Wow was I in for a ride. I ordered the vegan JUST eggs bennies and replaced the fruits side with chicken noodle soup. This is a solid place to go to for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am a huge fan of diners everywhere I go. I like to lounge just for coffee and talking with a friend or play a game of cards late at night. They offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day every day. YAY!! They also offer Brunch with mimosas and Bloody Mary' drinks. The service is friendly and fast here. The food is excellent but a bit pricey. I normally don't like the shredded hash browns or home fries that some other diners offer but their home fries are fried which make it crispy on the outside but slightly soft on the inside. I have eaten at various locations of the Silver Diner throughout Virginia and Maryland for the past 20 years, and I can honestly say that the menu has changed for the better with healthier, tastier, and more interesting options. I'm glad they kept the large pies because it keeps the "mom & pop" feel of the diner. As a foodie, I notice things such as how well they consistently chopped the veggies for my Western omelette so that it's cooked evenly. The biscuits are by far the some of the best because they're not too dry. Their salmon entrees were on point delicious. The fish tacos were very good with nice toppings. They also offer gift cards and a rewards program through their mobile app. The vintage jukeboxes are still there at each table but currently don't work because they're being serviced. As I glanced out the window of the Silver Diner, I wondered how many patrons had graced this location with their families looking to consume an authentic diner cuisine. I was nearing the end of my D.C. vacation and was informed by my sister, a trusted long time Silver Diner patron, that the food here was amazing. We chatted it up with friends and ordered two Bison Huevos Ranchero entrees, buttermilk pancakes and an amazing order of Banana Stuffed Caramel and Chocolate Chip French toast. The waitress was busy serving other customers but was attentive to our needs. The manager stopped in to check on us and we promptly informed him that our meal seemed to be quite delayed. Luckily, within minutes of speaking with him, our meals were served. I dove into my French toast and thoroughly enjoyed the gooey caramel and sweet chocolate chips. I know it's not the healthiest choice, but the breakfast hit the spot. The two toasts were fluffy and soft and had just the right amount of sweetness (no syrup needed)... While sampling the twin's pancakes, I took in the scene of the diner. The décor boasted a display case of tasty treats on entry and actual mini jukeboxes on the tables. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the old school music softly playing. I also noted that it was not a far walk from the Mosaic District Shopping Center. I'd definitely return and try an entrée off of the "Healthier Flexitarian Options" as I've recently changed my eating habits. It's hard to balance the sweet and savory options of menus while trying to maintain a healthy diet. The Power Breakfast of egg whites and whole wheat toast will be consumed on the next visit. I was hoping for better. Overall the food was good, I stopped in for lunch with my dad on the way home from an appointment. My dad got the western omelette apparently that's his go to at the Silver Diner, I opted for one of their lunch specials which was tasty and hit the spot for me. The service left much to be desired. Now mind you my dad worked in the food service industry throughout most of his career and I've worked at several places where he had worked so we both are generally empathetic to those who work in the restaurant field. We will typically cut these hard working folks a lot of slack. Don't get me wrong the host staff, and our server were both very nice but it took forever to get our food, and yet we were seated near the counter and I couldn't help but notice a lot of people just standing there. Not to mention our server didn't come by to say sorry the kitchen is backed up and he only came by once to refill our drinks while we waited.
