Cooking my own pancakes table top was a fun and unique concept! Coming from Chicago, we don't have a place like this, so my family definitely had fun trying to create designs with the pancake batter. Now to the food: I tried their seasonal batter, lemon poppyseed and it was so good! Definitely flavorful. I topped it off with fresh strawberries and their coconut syrup, sounds very sweet but it was a yummy combo. If you visit and this batter is their special, try it! Their candied bacon was a little disappointing because it was so soggy being drenched by the syrup. Great place for a go-to family breakfast spot! Everyone is very nice and all the food is really good. I ordered a side of yogurt and honey and it was so delicious! You don't get that great of honey in California. I love how you can make your own pancakes here because you don't have that in other places. My friend ordered their burrito and that was huge, delicious, and filling! There was a wait time of about 30 minutes when I showed up, but this place seemed very popular with a family crowd. My friend did DIY with buttermilk batter and Bananas with a side of candied bacon - I ordered the Banana bread French toast with side Portuguese sausage. This place did not disappoint in flavor and fun!!! Highly recommend going early - we waited 25/30 minutes. Parking could be a challenge in the little strip mall area. VERY AVERAGE: Came here with high expectations based on reviews. The waitress recommended the kitchen cook our breakfast vs us using the grill at the table to make pancakes, stating "it's really early to be cooking". They have a loco moco to die for. I mean their Slappy Moco (grilled hamburger, 2 eggs, 2 scoops of rice, housemade mushroom gravy, red pepper sauce, spinach oil, crispy Maui onions) is fricken delicious. I've had a lot of loco mocos in my time, but this one was so good, my wife wouldn't share it with me! It just hit all the right spots. But of course the main reason why people come to Slappy Cakes is because of their batter to make fun flapjacks. The day I went their seasonal was Passion fruit, which I would imagine would be pretty much year round, but there's actually a season for it. Step inside and it is a clean, aesthetically pleasing mix of white, blonde wood and orange. Old school music is bumping and I feel like I am at an 80's roller skating rink and not a breakfast place. I was really really looking forward to checking this place out for a couple of years since I had heard they had vegan pancakes. We get there and I order a coffee and ask for soy milk or almond milk, and the lady tells me we only have skim milk. Now even the lady at a fruit stand on my way to Hana had soy milk so a restaurant with vegan pancakes should have it. She checked and of course had soy milk but the coffee was flavorless and no good regardless. Then we were going to order orange juice, but for $6 a glass, it's not fresh but Tropicana. Thankfully the waiter told us this before we ordered. Then came the batter for the create your own pancakes. It's gluten free and vegan and has a weird aftertaste from the flour they use. My brother in law ordered vegan pancakes off the menu and they were thicker than the ones we were making ourselves on the griddle and were doused with syrup so hid the aftertaste well. So moral of the story, order the vegan pancakes off the menu and don't get orange juice.the coconut syrup is really good too.
