I like Son Del North. It's a little pricey but not that pricey. It's like a little treat. I used to get shat on at chipotle for swapping out rice for extra beans and now it's the cool thing . I don't my yellow ass or half of manhattan's... paler population has any claim on what's authentic but there's a nice smokey char on the meat and tortilla. I've been here three times, all at different hours of the day. I don't recommend a Saturday morning as soon as they open up at 11am. They pre-cook a few of the burritos in advance and it just wasn't hot enough for me to enjoy it. I was disappointed because of that aspect. I came on a Friday night at 6:30-7PM. The line itself wasn't very long but waiting for the burrito did take 30 minutes. It was still good. Very smoky and good char on the skin. I do recommend eating at least a third of it BEFORE the green chili sauce. That way you can taste all the flavors, the chunky steak, smooth avocadoes, etc. After you use the green chili sauce, the heat covers up the flavors moving forward. The best time was a Tuesday afternoon, around 4:30 PM. It was fresh and hot and all the flavors came together. Their tortilla is also thin and almost flaky -- love this because it makes the burrito feel less carb-y. We got the pollo asado and carne asada burritos. I wonder if that's why they named it Son Del North, which directly translates to "They are from the North." They occupy a tiny space in the Lower East Side and have a simple, concise menu consisting of 5 different choices of burritos. The Carne Asada is the obvious choice. Made up of tender juicy carne asada, mayocoba beans, fresh avocado, cheese, all held together by a beautiful, crispy tortilla flown in from Sonora. The first bite brought me straight back to my time in San Diego, where the best Mexican food in the country is on every street corner. I took it for granted. My roommate (USC Basketball Hall of Famer), is a burrito connoisseur and is far more picky with his Mexican food than I am. He gave Son Del North a "soft 9 out of 10," with his only higher rating in New York coming from Ceremonia Bakery over in Williamsburg. High praise. I've walked by this place numerous times and without fail, there's a crowd waiting outside. I finally decided to bite the bullet and see what the hype was about. The spot is a hole in the wall. There's no place to eat even if you wanted to. There are two benches for waiting, a cashier stand, and the rest is kitchen. From waiting to order to arrival of the food, it took about a full 40 minutes. I went with the carne asada and the camaron aka steak and shrimp. Apparently their thing is that their burritos do not have rice but had beans. And the beans are supposedly the best part. Well I took home these bad boys and cut them in half. Wow. I ordered a classic Carne Asada burrito, each burrito includes avocado, beans (no rice), and cheese. One thing I absolutely appreciate about their burritos is that after two bites, I'm eating what's inside the burrito rather than the folds of the tortilla. This is a minor issue but I still enjoyed every bite of my carne asada burrito. The location is a cute small burrito shop with an open window to enjoy some people watching while waiting on your order. They offer outdoor seating and two benches. They are characterized by their lack of rice (similar to how you may find in a Mission style burrito) and a heavier focus on beef (owing to the prevalence of cattle in the north of Mexico) rather than pork. If you are looking for a Chipotle replacement, this is not what you are looking for, but if you are willing to expand your horizons just a little bit, you will certainly be rewarded. The store is a fairly small spot in the Lower East Side, just south of Houston. There are a couple of benches inside to wait for your order, and a couple of tables outside where you will see people standing around enjoying their burritos. You order inside and then typically wait outside for your name to be called. The wait can be a bit longer when there is a line, and I've never been particularly surprised at how quickly my food came out even when there is not a line. The menu options are very limited, with the carne asada (beef as described above) is probably the stand out, with the rest of the options being nearly unnecessary for a non-vegetarian. The carne asada itself is juicy and tender, and comes with avocado and some of the creamiest beans I've ever had. The grilled onions are uniquely good compared to other burritos I've had in New York City. Got a Carne Asada burrito and Horchata from here yesterday via uber eats. I normally do not order delivery, but there was a promo, so why not? The grilled onions in the burrito were very good but I could not detect any flavor from the carne asada. The carne asada here had less flavor than the chipotle steak. I also hate to say it, but the burrito may actually be better with the addition of a small amount of rice. The salsa verde was the highlight, bright with roasted tomatillos, cilantro and lime juice, you could tell it was homemade and not a jarred product. This is a small little place in lower east side that is surprisingly absolutely packed. We showed up at around 2pm on a Saturday and the crowd outside this place was wild to me. Several people were standing and both the small standing tables outside this restaurant were also occupied when it was 30 degrees outside. Fascinating to me. We went in and there was actually no line to order, but everyone was instead waiting for their burritos. The server was nice and it took a few seconds to put in our order. Next time we will note to call ahead. We got one chicken burrito, which came with some green chili salsa on the side. The burrito took around 15 minutes to come out and was quite good. I did think the amount of guac in the burrito was great. Texture wise it was nice and soft which is my favorite for a good solid burrito. Lots of beans, and I actually like how there was no rice in this burrito. I did think it could use more protein. I also think it needed some tomatoes in some form. It really did feel that something was missing in this burrito but we could not just put a finger on it (we suspect tomatoes). Other than that was a solid and filling burrito. I did think it was a bit overpriced. There are no places to sit down here and the orders do take some time to come out. This place is a no frills lil takeout counter in the Les with 2 benches inside to sit and a few high top tables outside. The menu is small and the cashier was friendly. I ordered the steak burrito that was recommended to me. The tortilla is really authentic. Not sure if they make it in house, but really tasty. The steak was good, and juicy, but I will say it was more on the rare side and soft which I personally like, but if you're not into red meat I would ask to cook longer. The green hot sauce on the side was also good, but needed to add some flavor. The texture is also kind of mush, it borderline tasted like it was missing a flavor element.
