Typically, Sonny's for me is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's bad. Last time I went, I felt rushed. The food came in less than five minutes, but it came with the bill. I never really saw the waitress after that, she only ran a drink once or twice. The food is delicious, in my opinion, some of my friends don't agree. I would have given this 4 stars except there is an issue with consistency. Sometimes it will be very enjoyable. The ribs will be cooked properly, fall off the bone, with a good crispness. Other times, the ribs and BBQ seem almost like they are either re-warmed and soggy with the texture of boiled meat, or cold. They have temperature issues with a lot of the foods. When I go through a thought process of "hey, do I want to eat at Sonny's?" the first things that come to mind are "is the BBQ going to be the boiled/reheated type stuff" or is the pulled pork going to be cold? Sometimes they are "on it". You know it's going to be good when the garlic toast is nice and hot. The sides: stick to the basics. Get french fries, baked beans or cole slaw. If you are adventurous, maybe the mac and cheese (but it's a slippery slope). The fries are usually the one consistent item, as are the beans. The slaw seems too creamy and not fresh and the mac and cheese too gooey and flavorless or cold. When they get it right, you will completely enjoy your food. If they have a bad day, you will know and and you will be so bummed out you spent that kind of money on bad food. Very hit or miss, I won't lie to you. I probably wouldn't continue to go there, but it's been a tradition for so long kinda a habit. I have not been in about 4 months though. When you have a bad experience, sometimes takes a long time to get the courage up to come back. Dustin's is more consistent, but expensive and has less "home made" items (sides, non-BBQ items) on the menu. Really a coin flip with either Port Orange bbq. Don't even think about Woody's though, severe food poisoning (worst case I have seen in my entire life, and I've been to Mexico) occurred to my husband and we've never gone there again. read more

My family and I were drawn in by the "redneck egg rolls" which looked very appetizing online. Once we finally decided to give Sonny's a try, we were very displeased. The egg rolls were dry and very greasy with little to no cheese or coleslaw. The meal itself was the same - bland and greasy. Fries were frozen, macaroni had no taste, and the salad bar was subpar. Well, For starters we walked in and waited for about 8-10 minutes just to be seated. The place was fairly slow not too many people, so being seated quickly seemed reasonable. Apparently, not for Sonny's. The Waitress did a great job at not getting irritated at my obnoxious and rude brother-in-law. He ordered all you can eat sweet ribs, with a side of fries and mac & cheese. I ordered just the lunch special of sweet ribs, a loaded baked potato, and Mac & Cheese. For Drinks we had sweet teas. These drinks are probably the only reason Sonny's gets three stars in my book. The Cups are MASSIVE, COLOSSAL, GOD LIKE, EPIC! And the waitress made sure to keep refilling. The food only took about 8 minutes to hit the table, and just looking at it looked mouth-watering. My potato did not come loaded like i asked, and i had to wait another 5 minutes for the waitress to bring out cheese and bacon for the potato and my side of Mac&cheese. By that time the potato was not hot enough to even remotely melt the cheese. The ribs were not anymore than luke warm when they hit the table and were very bland, flavorless, and dull. The four sauces you can choose from were actually quite tasty. I am at a stand still on two stars or three, but all in all I guess it wasn't that bad of an experience. What a great chain restaurant!!! I usually shy away from chains, but glad I was convinced to come here, a real treat. Came here on a boys weekend so we got to try nearly the whole menu. What stood out to me is the non-pulled brisket, dry-rubbed and superbly tender and smokey. They have a few bbq sauces on the table, but u can request some great mustard sauce which I think goes better with the brisket. The place has plenty of booth seating and is by the par chain, but clean restrooms and clean in general. The staff were very patient with us, especially for being a group of guys that had a few beers by the end. read more

Wow!! Kristen went above and beyond on our catering order. She knew exactly what we were looking for. We had a 3 year anniversary party at my work and Sonny's of port orange came through. The pulled pork was tremendous and the ribs amazing. What is going on Sonny's? You used to be the best barbecue restaurant around. The service is horrible. It took us 30 mins to order take out because your app wasn't working. I had to run down what we ordered because a few items were missed. What is going on with your baked beans? It used to be that no one could beat them. Now, they just taste like they are out of a can. They open at 10:45am I pulled up at 11:00am and waited just to watch the cooks chain smoke. I've been to several Sonny's around the state and the cafeteria style precook mac and cheese is hard to mess up considering all you do is heat it up but still served my son cold Mac. The redneck rolls that are one of the few things made Inhouse besides all the bbq were trash and I was served ribs that were left in the heater all night. First, the food was delicious and the server was fast and polite! The big problem was the entire floor from when you walked in the front door to all tables was as slippery as GLASS! I am a senior, and I noticed that even with rubber sole tennis shoes, I could barely keep my balance. On the way out after eating, I could see the reflection off the floors of some substance or cleaner/wax that had been applied, and you could see faint footprints. Whatever this is, before someone falls and breaks something, please clean this up immediately. You will need to put something on it first to cut through the slippery mess that is on there now. There was a sign to the far left when I walked in, but it just said caution...nothing mentioned how slippery the floors were until I started walking. I almost left, but my son, who noticed it was slippery too, was already following the waitress. I did ask if the floors were slippery and she said yes, especially with heels and rubber sole shoes? 4th of July 2019. Just left the Sonnys BBQ Port Orange FL. I was there around 3:30pm with family. The place was not that busy, and looks to be a refurb taking place. We were seated pretty quick. Then got drink order in and drinks arrived about 3 minutes later. We wanted baby back ribs. Waitress said we are out of baby back ribs and had only one smoker working today. Waitress asked if ready to take order, we told her to give us a few more minutes since we were planning on the baby back ribs. She seemed to be overwhelmed. I tried to get her attention several times and she ignored me. After about another 20 minutes of waiting and seeing other people get food that arrived after we did, I had enough, we decided to leave. We left there and went to Dustins BBQ Port Orange and had a nice meal. Do not plan on returning to this location. Very disappointed in the service we got. read more

What a terrible place to eat. After an almost 30 min wait it wasn't worth it. They were completely understaffed and not even sure where the manager was because it was completely Unorganized. The salad bar was not refreshed once while we were there for the almost 2 hours. Not only was the food empty on the salad bar it was obvious it was old. They were telling people that they ran out of ribs and it is a bar b que place. The bathrooms were filthy and disgusting. The staff in the kitchen were swearing and the stress was obviously getting to them. We made a couple of comments but no offer of a solution. It's really too bad but go to McDonalds not only would you get better service most likely, you'll save money and get what you pay for...fast food. Save yourself a trip I would rate it a zero, but I'll give it one star for the effort some of the waitstaff tried to give but if I was the owner of this place I would re-evaluate the management team. Great barbecue, great service, and they are never stingy with the condiments. I always stop at Sonny's BBQ when I'm in the area visiting family. While they're barbecue isn't necessarily the best, their ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and grilled chicken are pretty decent. Their baked beans are also my favorite compared to other side items that are on the menu. Ordered catering for Memorial Day outing. Pulled pork was so dry, even with the sauce it would choke you. Sliced brisket, which by the way is extra for each person, was as dry. My wife and I came in for lunch after 1:30 and the restaurant wasn't crowded. Despite the fact that our waitress only had 2 - 3 tables, service was slow. Once we got our meal she disappeared for a long period of time. No checking back to bring us extra plates for the salad bar until we were completely finished with our meal. Restaurants should not allow their employees to stand out in front of the restaurant and smoke...we hate smoking and I don't want to find my way thru the fog of cigarette smoke to go inside. Further, it's not the restaurants fault, but we sat across from a table of trailer trash with potty mouths. One of the people sitting at the table was a Sonny's employee who had gotten off work...again, not cool. On the good side, the food was excellent! WORST SONNYS EVER!!!!!! They just arbitrarily don't have AYCE Turkey.... EVERY Sonny's has it except this one. Drive out of the way to come to this Sonny's and all we like is the Turkey. The reason given to me was we can choose not to have menu item.... consistency is important for branding so just not choosing to have something that all the other Sonny's have is a horrible business decision. So many memories here for my husband - thus we always go when we're in town. I usually just opt for the salad bar, which is great. To me, Sonny's is just a normal BBQ chain, but my husband LOVES it! I am very picky about BBQ and I have to say that this place blew me away. Fast food style BBQ with full service and it is excellent! I ordered the "Pork 3 ways (Ribs, pulled, and sliced)" and everything exceeding my expectations. Everything was cooked perfectly with tons of flavor. As many BBQ restaurants do, they offer 4 different unique styles of sauce and honestly all of them are great! I personally held onto the Original bottom myself but the Smokey, Sweet, and Spicy options were equally great for your indivisible taste. Every time I've gone to this Sonny's either my food or my boyfriend's food comes out cold and this was no exception. We had to wait 10 minutes just for our drinks and than another 15 - 20 minutes for our food. Than my food (a big deal chicken sandwich & fries) came out lukewarm. The rest of my party didn't have anything complicated (chicken, salad, macaroni & cheese and a sweet potato) so I don't know what took so long. The rest of the restaurant didn't look too busy & there were other tables waiting for their food just as long if not longer than we had to wait. After my food finally came out hot, 5 minutes later, it was still just "eh"; my sandwich was greasier than usual but I was to hungry at that point to send it back again. By far the worst & slowest experiences at this Sonny's to date. The kitchen seriously needs to get it together. I think I'm about at the point where I won't go back to this location again. read more
