Came here for lunch while staying overnight with work. The place was fairly empty around 1:30pm. I was immediately sat at the bar area. The high top tables are very wobbly and need to be reinforced before using them. This resorted to me sitting at the bar. I ordered the Salmon sandwich with a side salad subbed for the fries. The sandwich is a smaller portion but excellent! The fish was done perfectly to e point of you aren't careful, it will start breaking (which is the way it should be). I would definitely recommend the salmon sandwich if you like salmon. The salad came out do with no dressings. They brought out their balsamic dressing after I asked. The salad was average. I get the idea the food here, at last the main curses are excellent and I definitely enjoyed my sandwich (4 stars if that was the only thing being reviewed. In the end I was really happy with the Spencer cut 22oz ribeye - the ideal size, in between the boneless 14oz and the tomahawk 28oz. The crust was seared to perfection and the juices were flowing marvelously. You have the choice of raw horseradish (my preference), creamy, bernaisse or peppercorn sauce. Also deserving high marks are the starters: Crisp Calamari - pretty damn good. Sizeable squid portions. Grilled Octopus - mouth watering taste with delicious barley romesco sauce and pine nuts. I could have eaten the whole plate. Accompaniments: Mushrooms - served whole. Nothing special. Potato Mousseline - garlicky good, but minus points for trying to make mashed potatoes sound overly fancy. Brussels sprouts - halves, nice but not really noteworthy Sautéed spinach - again good, seasoned nicely, but unremarkable. Accompaniments are $10 each or $24 for 3. Wine list : Good not great also not over the top. We ordered a nice Daou Cabernet from Paso Robles. Very nice swirl-able glasses. Lastly the service was pretend-nice. What that means is courteous on its face but in the end they tried to sneak in a service charge "required" for passport users (we had a BOGO discount) yet neglected to mention it. We were about to tip a second time before realizing the service charge was already on the bill. Also they wouldn't honor the free glass of wine for Yelper check in. Small things like that make the difference between good and great steakhouses, especially when you're charging $95 for your best steak. But overall very high quality eats pushes the rating to a 3.4. Sad to say that this place has gone downhill. We hadn't been since COVID shut it down for a while, but used to enjoy it as a quiet place to go for steaks, and had been at least a half dozen times, if not more. Here's what's changed: 1) The menu has shrunk considerably. There are barely any items on it anymore. Fewer appetizers, fewer steak options (only 3) even fewer sauces/accompaniments for steaks (only 3), fewer sides options. It's a SUPER limited menu now. 2) They used to do this delicious sourdough bread with a salted butter. Now they've replaced it with an absolutely inedible (seriously, it's disgusting) feta something-or-other and a honey butter. Neither are good. 3) Wines are smaller sizes. Most places give you a choice between a 6 and 9 oz pour, they give you a 5 or 8 oz pour. C'mon... The "Spencer's Salad" was especially inedible. It tasted like wet lettucce. It was meant to have some kind of vinaigrette on it but, nuthin. The steaks themselves were fine (not awesome, not terrible) and the sides were okay, but the menu is now so limited we'll just go somewhere else for steaks from now on. read more

We came here with little expectations and it turned out to be great. We had reservations for 6:00 on a Saturday and it wasn't busy. I'm surprised I've never heard about this place. We had a Groupon deal so we gave this place a try. We had French onion soup, braised bacon, creamed spinach, scallops and shrimp, tomahawk steak, filet mignon, cheesecake, and creme brûlée. Everything was delicious except the tomahawk was a bit dry and tough. The food came out quite fast and service was good. The lighting wasn't too dim so it wasn't putting us to sleep. What a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Only in town to catch a plane the following morning and checking into the Doubletree and saw Spencers as we checked in. On this Thursday night, there was no waiting and the three of us we quickly seated. The meals were very good and the service was terrific. Stopped in here by happenstance when we missed our reservations for another restaurant. Upscale and modern with a decent bar but as with most $$$$ restaurants at this level, my taste buds were expecting a much more elevated experience. I had the opportunity to take a bite out of the crab and lobster cake, prawn cocktail special and the octopus. Out of the 3, the clear winner was definitely the crab and lobster cake. Decent portion with chunks of lobster dressed with a creamy aioli sauce. Octopus was too overcooked and slightly chewy while the prawns looked more like baby shrimp. For my entree, I ordered the scallops with orzo. Surely not bad but I definitely wouldn't call it innovative. It was very much 3 jumbo sized pan seared scallops lying on a bed of orzo. We added a few sides for the heck of it and quickly realized our Brussels sprouts were only half cooked. The French fries were a nice guilty treat though. There you have it. Been here a few times and the steak is pretty solid, the seafood is not really the best but I mean they are a steakhouse right? The service is pretty good, can be a bit slow at times but overall not bad. I've gotten the ribeye every time that I've been here and it's cooked very well, lacks a bit flavor at times but the overall steak temperature is pretty much spot on! One thing that this place always does (and that I forget about) is that it's one of those restaurants that ask you "still or sparkling water?" when you first sit down and both those options cost $$$, you need to say TAP WATER to get the free water, first time I came I said still because well... The bread with the salted butter was yummy. The ribeye was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was so savory that it just melts in your mouth. I got the wedge salad which wasn't super impressive but the bacon on it was absolutely amazing! So crispy. For sides we got the Spencer's hash browns, brussel sprouts and mushrooms. The parking lots were all paid parking or valet (they supposedly validate) but we weren't sure and parked across the street in some big mostly empty business lot. No issues. I had a good experience at a Spencer's Steakhouse years back in Salt Lake City and decided to go the one in San Jose. It is located in the Doubletree Hotel near the San Jose Airport. Nice open high ceiling circular room. The table were nicely spced, not to close. The service was old school with all of the waiters wearing white jackets. 22 oz. Spencer's medium rare was excellent. I can't say enough good things about Spencer's. I've been here a few times over the last five years and it has been perfect every time. I made a reservation and put a note that it was our anniversary and that a more secluded table would be great. The hostess led us through the filled tables to the empty back room, and told us we could sit wherever we would like and that we would be dining alone. Perfect! The waitress was great and very helpful, not snooty at all, as we have encountered at other fine restaurants. On to the food... My husband and I got New York strips cooked medium, hash brown potatoes, carrots in brandy and brown sugar, and mushrooms and onions. The steak was outstanding, cooked beautifully and skillfully with a gorgeous crust on the outside and juicy pink deliciousness on the inside. The sides were pretty amazing too. Waitress was nice and thoughtful, and she packed my Mom's french onion soup togo, even though we weren't expecting her to (my mom didnt finish it and wasn't trying to take it home). My only gripe about the place is that they offered us sparkling water and some fancy bottled water without telling us it was $10/bottle. We assumed it was free, but when they gave us the check, it was $20 total for the water we drank! The Porterhouse was served table side and was juicy and well seasoned, the crab mac and cheese was hot and crab filled, Spencer's signature hash browns were incredibly tasty and the fresh roasted asparagus rounded out a extremely pleasant dinner. For the price the food is horrible...No matter how you order your steak it all comes medium, probable not the fault of the cooks (I don't think they have a chef) being that they dont get to choose the thickness cuts of the meat. $69 gets you an 18oz piece of well done flavorless steak you could have gotten at a Dennys. I decided to have my belated birthday dinner with my husband and older son at the restaurant last Saturday (4/21). We got to the restaurant for a 6pm reservation and was quickly seated. Then again, the place wasn't busy just yet. Our waitress took our order in a timely manner but the service went downhill from there. For appetizer, we ordered the braised bacon appetizer with figs and herbs, which was cooked well and juicy. My son really liked it. For dinner, I ordered the lamb chop and my husband got the prime rib. For our sides, we had potatoes, glazed carrots and brussel sprouts. My son got mac and cheese. We started noticing that the service was lacking during our dinner. It seemed like it was taking some time to get our food. Also, our server didn't check with us if everything was good when our food did arrive. By then, it started getting busy around 7pm by then. Maybe they were short staffed since I didn't see that many waiters. There were times that we were sitting around after we were done before our server came back. We did order the neapolitan cheesecake for dessert. Again, it took some time before we got the dessert. After finishing the dessert, we were left waiting for the server so we can get the check. Get this, we had the card out and ready while each of us took turns to go to the bathroom. Both times, the server didn't come with the check. When we were finally done, we left the restaurant past 8pm. It took us about 2 hours for dinner but most of that was waiting around. I'm not really sure how to rate this place. I brought 7 members of my senior staff here today for a holiday lunch. The atmosphere was great and the food was quite good. But imagine my surprise when I received the bill and had a $48 charge for the water. Are you KIDDING me? At the very least the server should notify the table that the bottles of water (yes water) are $7 apiece. There was not an option to get just "water". You had to have "flat" or "sparkling" water from Italy". Um, really, "flat water" from San Jose is just fine. If I knew that drinking a clear liquid was going to cost $50 then I would have ordered vodka and gotten something out of it! The only issue with the food: First of all, the Prime Rib melt sandwich (the sandwich itself) may be one of the best "dip" sandwiches i have ever eaten. The meat was perfect, the bun was excellent. But the menu says served with "au jus". Um, sorry, that wasn't au jus. That was French onion soup. Which, I have to say, was a little gross with the high end prime rib sandwich. Where is the au jus???? Not sure if I'll be back just because of these issues. Update: Well, it doesn't sound like the restaurant really cares that they served water (and charged a 20% tip) and charged me a total of close to $60. The water alone was a full 20% of my bill. The servers do NOT tell you that the water is outrageously priced! (Not to mention I just saw this water at Costco for $13 a case). Oh well. When I visited Spencer's, located inside the Doubletree Hotel, it was because my half-functioning, post-conference production self just wanted food. My colleagues and I found a table immediately, and we were greeted with smiling and warm hospitality. The restaurant felt cozy with its red tones, dim lighting, and plush furniture. Our meal was filling and satisfying. My favorites were the crab cakes and white prawns. So flavorful and texture-ful... If that could be a word. The crab cakes were accompanied by kale salad and yogurt to balance out the flavor. The prawns had olives, parsley, scallion, and garlic confit. Perfecto! On the other hand, I wasn't a fan of the Brussel sprouts or Caesar salad. Neither had much flavor in comparison. Lastly, we shared the salmon crudo, which had an awesome side salad. Lots of great items on this menu. Kinda pricey, which is expected for a hotel restaurant. Not somewhere I'd go out of the way to visit, but I do appreciate that it's open relatively late for those attendees and even planners who still need to eat after a long day of learning and working. Why in a hotel, a relatively LARGE and prominent hotel like Hilton-owned Doubletree, is there only one restaurant open at 1pm?! It's still a prime time for lunch, I'd say, especially if you're in a hotel. There were other eateries/restaurants in the hotel that were unfortunately not available. That's just weird to me since you're now pretty much forced to eat at a Steak house even if you weren't planning on it. With that said, my dad and I strolled in with just an hour to spare as we had other commitments for that afternoon. We were seated right away by the friendly host and greeted shortly after by our just as friendly server. They had an awesome shrimp roll special but my Father and I veered towards their fried options. LOL. Had their calamari, which looked like a calamari salad as it had olives, feta and other veggies adorned with the dish, fish and chips - the fries were crispy thin, yum! - and onion soup. Since the restaurant name accentuated the "steaks and chops", I was naturally gravitated toward this "eye of rib eye steak" on the menu which emphasized it being a Wagyu-style American rib eye. My first thought was that even if they trim away the fat around the edges (which I love), the meat should still have a nice fat marbling and be tender but I couldn't be more wrong with my expectations. I asked for med-rare and the steak came out looking really lovely seared from the outside but was really tough. The steak was also a bit hard to cut even using my serrated knife. Definitely not as tender as I had expected. Although it seemed to have cooked med-rare, it was really lean and dry. I would definitely not be ordering that again! Throughout the meal, I just couldn't believe that was the quality of the American-style wagyu! It tasted more like regular filet mignon. All of the other dishes seemed okay. The flat iron steak was better than the eye of rib eye. Actually the french onion soup and the "slightly dirty" martini were also pretty good. I had an interesting experience trying to exit the parking lot. The validated ticket wouldn't register on the system and there weren't anyone manning the gate so I had to push the emergency button which magically lifted the barrier gate without a person in sight. Came here for a business lunch without any expectations and fairly hungry. Still can't give it more than 3 stars. They do all of the standard issue things -- able to cook at high temperatures (higher than most of us can do at home) to sear the, dry aged, USDA Prime beef. Spencer's is one of the better steak houses in the area, but I wish it were not tucked away in the Doubletree Hotel. Parking was good (validated), but being in a hotel just didn't give me the gourmet feeling. Steaks should be nicely seared on the outside, and cooked to your liking on the inside. My 14 oz Spencer's Steak (a 14 oz boneless ribeye; $20 at lunch) was just that. The searing left crunchy meat bits on the outside, and the right doneness for medium rare. I substituted the potatoes for a serving of broccoli, which was steamed, green, and complimented my meal. My caesar salad was nothing to write about (did I just write that?). If you're going to dine here, go for lunch as prices are about 40% cheaper than dinner, or go on an expense account. Bar only: Good wine by the glass list. Prices no better or worse than the same kind of place elsewhere. Spencer's is more upscale than the hotel it's in so you have to get beyond that. I'm glad I can now finally review the last eatery in the Doubletree, and do so with a five star rating. Opentable is a godsend. We were running a bit late, so flipping open my new smartphone, officially making me a cyborg, I changed the reservation quick as a shot and bought us an extra 30 minutes to head down. The service was spectacular if not a bit more than needed. In the midst of a heavy discussion we already knew what we wanted and munched on the fabulous bread and butter (with seat salt crystals) until our filet and lobster tail were brought out. Cooked perfectly. Medium as we were sharing and he likes his scared with fire and I like mine toasted black. Our eyes were a bit bigger than our stomachs as we also ordered the lobster mac and cheese (delicious and sooo rich) as well as the candied carrots which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was the perfect way to end the night and the food was to die for. And though it's a little pricier than I would usually go for, the next time I stay at the Doubletree I will be dropping into Spencers. And ordering their fantastic lobster tail. read more
