The service was friendly and prompt but the sushi was nothing special. We ordered about 9 different rolls between the three of us but none of them stood out. We noticed some of the rolls didn't come out the way they were described on the menu (missing the lemon or the ponzu, for example), which would've been more excusable if they were busy but it wasn't crowded (just us and one or two other tables). read more

If there was ever a name that was a red flag... Spicy Tuna is a sushi spot that has quietly sat near Trader Joe's on Eastern for a number of years now. I cannot recall hearing anything about it except when Geselle R. recently posted that they'd added an all-you-can-eat menu. I was in the area today and decided to give the AYCE a try. Although I was eligible for lunch pricing ($29, Mon-Fri 11:30-4:00), I went for the all-day/holiday option ($35) since I like to try the limited / premium items. Perhaps that wasn't the way to go here, as the Salmon Belly nigiri was completely out, and they subbed in a Yellowtail Belly that was on the bland side. The Fatty Tuna (maybe borderline chutoro) had a gristly strand/membrane, the uni was brown, and the Amaebi got a little too slimy as I chewed on it. That unexpected mouthfeel was also part of the Halibut (oddly limited to all-day) and Squid. The riceless fish items (Ono Sashimi, Screaming Orgasm, Sashimi Salad, Jalapeno Sashimi) were all fine but tended to rely on sauce for flavor. Frankly, the fish all tended to be bland aside from the regular yellowtail. Cooked apps were also a mixed bag. The mussels were a bit too chewy and did not have enough sweetness to balance out the tangy cream cheese on top. The Pork Belly Chashu wasn't as fatty as I would have liked. The Galbi Tacos were not bad although the meat didn't really have the sweet and charred characteristics to the extent that I'd like. The Jay Special should be good since it's their namesake spicy tuna atop a crispy rice, but the rice wasn't as crispy outside as I would have liked. Actually, the rice in general veered a little dry as it took too long to chew in general. I would say that they were vinegared properly, but that's not the only requisite feature of good sushi rice. I tend to focus on apps and nigiri when I do AYCE. I didn't do any rolls, and I even ended up skipping dessert, which does seem promising as there isn't a blanket 1-dessert-per-person limit printed on the menu. The atmosphere is standard, although I was distracted by handprints on the bottom half of the front door. The music is a roughly 55-minute loop of softer/slower EDM covers of a variety of pop sounds, but you can tell that it repeats. Maybe it's a tool to help them decide when I might be getting to toward the 90-minute time limit, which felt kinda soft-enforced? Mainly on the basis of a suboptimal eating experience, I can't really recommend Spicy Tuna unless you're in the neighborhood and don't want to drive elsewhere for an AYCE sushi fix. Maybe they'll get better with time, but I consider them to be a bottom 3 spot for now. read more

Nobody in Vegas touches their menu selection. Easily the most diverse AYCE sushi spot in town and somehow the quality still delivers. We had so much fun at Spicy Tuna! I went with a group of four. Three of us enjoyed the $35 all-you-can-eat menu. Two of us took advantage of buy one, get one free beer and sake--it's hard to beat an $8 house hot sake, especially when a second one is coming. I started with the miso mushroom soup, which was adequate, and the seaweed salad, which I thought has just the right amount of sweetness and sesame oil. The Tijuana Express roll was a fun hot mess, and the other rolls were likewise what I call "tourist rolls." At AYCE sushi, they were perfect. The nigiri was where I settled in to enjoy my meal: salmon, yellowtail, albacore, shrimp, fatty tuna, and octopus. Everything was fresh and delicious. I had the green tea tempura ice cream for dessert, which was the only misstep; I thought it would be like fried ice cream, but the tempura breading was cold and soggy. I came here with two very hangry females on a Thursday evening, so I kept my mouth shut, ordered last and fast! Disclaimer: "Sushi snob" alert! Feel free to stop reading if you're the type that only orders a Philly Roll or any blasphemous roll with cream cheese in it. = Dining & Atmosphere = They've got bar seating, and there were plenty of tables and booths that appeared fairly clean. We were seated and I noticed Korean items on the menu. I don't generally mind , as it tells me this place is more of a fusion. Japanese decor everywhere as well, which made me think "generic." This is where I become a sushi snob; I become judgemental when it comes to little things like this. I tend to highly judge authenticity versus presentation. Anyways, dining in was OK as the place was pretty roomy. = Appetizers & Sushi = - Yellowtail Kama ($11), this was good, only I wondered if this was deep fried or flash fried, versus grilled. I didn't see any char on the edges. - Korean Fried Chicken ($10) were little boneless chicken nuggets with a sweet-spicy sauce. It was decent, we ate it, but was nothing special. - Okonomiyaki ($9), we never received it. See details below. - Takoyaki ($8), these tako balls were enjoyable. We didn't order these as the server got our order wrong, We complained, but still kept the dish because it was already placed on our table. - Alligator Roll ($11.99), loved this roll and the crunchy tempura unagi on top. A tasty roll I would get again. - Danny Hand Roll ($10), this was definitely a handful! And I liked it! The combination of that tempura shrimp and soft-shell crab made worth it! = Staff = It seemed we had a new kid serving us, because when I ordered and said "hamachi kama", he looked at me with a blank stare like that's not on the menu. I didn't wanna sound like a jerk, so I replied with its 'yellowtail collar', and yes it's on the menu as 'yellowtail kama'. We were then served our okonomiyaki and my hangry girl friends were like; "Dude that ain't a pancake. Those are brown balls with bonito flakes, wtf!" I hate to call out our server again, but he didn't even know what the difference was between takoyaki and okonomiyaki (smh). The manager had to pay a visit to make sure our order was right. Wish that kid some good luck. And I hate to mention this too, but we heard a disruption in the back of someone yelling and screaming. It sounded like a pissed off cook mad about something. The dining patrons looking at each other, shocked in silence! = Overall / TL:DR = Rarely do I give that Yelpie review statement of, "I don't understand how this place gets five stars," but I'm gonna have to use that statement in this case. The place is located in a busy parking lot crammed between Trader Joe's and a Home store. Expect to see some Korean items like the KFC nuggets, bulgogi tacos, a galbi roll, and soju. For the most part I enjoyed their rolls, but not their apps! Prices were average, while some items were above average. My verdict stands at 3.5 stars, and just not enough to earn a 4th or 5th due primarily because of service. Service unfortunately was a killer for me. But it's worth a try for yourself! read more
