The Stake Chophouse is located on the second floor of a building that follows the curves of Orange Avenue as it approaches the Hotel Del Coronado. Access to the restaurant is gained either via a steep and straight concrete staircase from the public sidewalk directly to the door, or by way of a small elevator with brushed steel interior that has seen better days [I understand the restaurant has no control over that factor]. Upon entering, you are greeted by a couple of gentlemen, who seem to be sufficiently efficient. There is perhaps a bit of casualness to the staff that is not reflected in the very high prices of the menu. For example, I overhead one of the hosts state to my waiter "You got Table 17?", before the waiter approached my table (#17). The waiter and I recognized each other from a motel he used to work at in Kearny Mesa, where I would occasionally visit for fried chicken in their dining room. The dining room is coolly and sleekly beautiful, minimal in design. The modern lighting fixtures added a grand and welcome flourish to the sleek décor. Some of the raucous noise of the Happy Hour crowd in the adjacent bar bleeds into the dining room to disrupt the Zen serenity. The wine list at Stake is spectacular and comprehensive. However, at the time of my visit, a bound copy was not offered, so I had to review a huge wine book on the tiny screen of my cell phone, which was not ideal. The dinner menu consists of the usual steaks. Not surprisingly, as at many steak houses, the accompaniments are a la cate, so be ready for that factor to further inflate the final bill. An absolute pleasure. Every bite was delectable. I had the Cesar salad and the skirt steak that was recommended by our waiter Ziggy. His way of explaining the steak and the knives they offer, was like listening to a storybook description and he was on target with his recommendations for the 6 of us. He made it an experience to remember...I can't mention enough adjectives to describe the service he gave us. And Sebastian! Came in on a Saturday for happy hour at 4PM. We were lucky to get the last patio seating outside. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful with our questions about the happy hour drinks and food options. The restaurant location is very nice as well. We got the mussels, oysters, and steak frites on happy hour and tried a bite of the lobster potato a friend ordered. Mussels were a tad bit under cooked but the sauce was delicious with bread. The oysters were good but they are on the bigger side. I tend to like my oysters small for less of the chewy texture. The complimentary pallet cleanser and bread were great. Unfortunately, for a steakhouse, the steak frites came out well done when we ordered medium rare. We asked for the right cook of steak so we sent back the dish. When the dish returned, we got a skirt steak instead of the petit filet that was on the description. It was bizarre that a steakhouse would serve us a cheaper cut hoping we won't pay attention. We ended up sending the second dish back and asked for them to remove the plate off of the bill. The waiter agreed that it was a skirt steak and the supervisor apologized during our meal as well. We were in Coronado for a work conference and it happened to be our 20th wedding anniversary as well. I took the wife to Stake for a nice meal and we were not disappointed!! Jeremy was our server and he was an excellent server! He was attentive but not overbearing, and even added a nice champagne surprise to end dinner. Jeremy did talk us into the Eye of the Rib cut of meat, which btw, I had never heard of, and it was amazing!! It was a great experience and is one of the 'big deal" places - meaning great ambience, great food and great service - with prices to match. At times the service was uneven, but management stepped in before we even complained and made things right. The caviar service was fun, with high quality caviar and yummy creme fraiche - but instead of blini or crackers, potato chips were served. Potato chips? They were a bit too salty for the caviar. I love homemade blue cheese dressing so I got the wedge salad. It was great - there was almost too much bacon...is that really a complaint? The beet salad was a surprising hit - the combo of beets, whipped cheese and nuts was refreshing. The bone marrow app was a luscious umami-filled dish. The accompanying toast was overseasoned. The diver scallop entree was as good as any seafood place and the wagyu cap was deeply flavorful - each bite screaming "beef!" in my mouth. It had the flavor depth of a ribeye with the texture of filet mignon. Oddly, the steak tartare was just meh - a bit overseasoned and the meat wasn't evenly chopped. Finally, the blueberry muffin bread pudding was to die for. We all immediately wondered why no one had made it before! The millionaire bar was fun but the chocolate cake was a bit dry. Super friendly staff who would explain everything very clearly. The cost is a bit high but that's to be expected with the high quality of food that you will be getting. I got the stakechop house experience and wine paring which was amazing. Again it does seem like a lot of money but with the amount of good you get it validates itself. It is a 5 course meal plus some extra goodies. We got Champaign, little taster to get the appetite going, then a massive starter to share with the table, your own second and third course, sharing a massive fourth course and sharing a fifth course (note: this was for 3 people and we were celebrating a birthday which explains why there is 2 desserts. If I was to add a down side it would be the wine pours were not even through the meals. The service is amazing from start to finish, the hostess was so pleasant and our server was attentive without being overbearing. I would take off a star because I mentioned it was a birthday dinner so I was expecting a special dessert surprise or a mention. We ordered the seafood platter as an appetizer it was so fresh and a wonderful variety. We ordered the lamb chops, the eye of rib, carrots (so tasty), ducheese potatoes, and mixed mushrooms. The knife box is worth a mention, it's brought out with knives that are made from different parts of the world and you get to choose which knife to use. Such a cool touch. The bar area was a little bit of a tight squeeze between the bar and the tables, wasn't comfortable hanging by the bar area so I just waited until we were seated in the main dinning area which was elegant. One of THE BEST dining experiences we've ever had. Their steaks are next level, and the knowledge they have about their meat is impressive. You must try the wagyu skirt steak, it melts in your mouth and is super flavorful. The bone in rib eye is a close second. Though the restaurant is upscale, it does not exude a pretentious vibe and the team is warm and welcoming. We rolled up with sweat pants and completely underdressed, no one batted an eyelid or treated us less than. I return 4 years later for another birthday, but this time a very special 50th birthday in the private room behind the wine wall. It was as good as I had hoped it to be. Special shout out to sommelier Patrick! He really made sure that everything was awesome. Real down to earth yet 100% friendly and professional. We did the ultimate feaat menu with some upgrades because the room has an f & b minimum and we were not sorry. It was one of the top 5 best meals of my life...it might actua3l be once of the best. Probably one of the best upscale stake houses in SD (up there with Born & Raised, Ruth Chris; been to both). The place: definitely has an upscale/fine dining vibe to it but you can come in casual clothing. Some of the guests sitting near us were wearing shorts lol. Service: Our server was amazing. He was let down as he had called like a month ahead to make sure they knew he was going to do that and had expected them to do something special. A Prosecco toast or free dessert... at the very least a "congratulations!" However our server did not say a thing. He actually was not the best server I've had and it wasn't a great experience. Martini came out wrong, he didn't really remember our order and had to come back and check it was right, no spoon to serve our sides... This is just for their happy hour. Happy hour is at the bar or at the outdoor patio/balcony. Heaters everywhere in the patio, very cozy. It was really good service, all the servers were super nice and smiley. We got a cocktail called spa water and the ginger beer, both really good. And I liked that the ginger beer came with a piece of really good candied ginger. For food, we basically ordered the entire happy hour menu. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The fries were really good. The sliders were as well. The glazed short rib was amazing. The meat is falls off the bone tender and the flavors were great. The sliders were okay. Came here for happy hour as my husband and I were just walking around Coronado. The restaurant is upstairs and has a nice view of city. For happy hour it's walk in and you sit at the bar which also has some outdoor seating. The weather was so nice so we sat outside. I think to actually eat in the restaurant you have to have a reservation which you can make online. I've heard about the Wagyu sampler so I wanted to try out something. We just got a couple drinks and apps for happy hour which were cheaper than regularly priced. The Wagyu popcorn was good but I didn't get a taste of Wagyu too much in it. Mostly just paprika. The sliders were pretty good but had a lot of bleu cheese. My husband and I both removed some of the cheese and it was much better. It came with chopped mushrooms as well. The filet mignon skewers were really good. The meat was tender and the sauce on the side was so fresh and added to the meat flavor. The cocktails were good too and very discounted for happy hour at $8. Service was not amazing but not terrible either. There is a 4% surcharge already but I have no complaints about the service. I would come back for the Wagyu during dinner hours as the filet was already so good, I'm sure the Wagyu is good too. read more

Oysters Rockefeller were the right mix of salty/crunchy and perfectly broiled. Sublime. The halibut was a fresh and healthy portion, accentuated by a slightly crispy?? crust -- so tasty!!! Unfortunately, Stake Chophouse missed ALL the marks. I was so ready to be impressed by everything, cause per Yelp, it's one of the best steakhouses in San Diego. We went there to celebrate our anniversary, but no one acknowledged it or even asked if we were celebrating something. The service was lacking. We only saw our waitress a total of ~4 times throughout our almost 3 hour stay which says a lot. The food came out rather slower than usual and when it did, the steak wasn't cooked right for both entrees. At that point we were already hungrier than when we arrived and no one checked on us so we went on eating, until my gf couldn't eat her steak anymore since it was tooo rare (about 1/4 in). Also, I think the lady who delivered our food got it mixed up. My gf always orders a filet mignon [Petite Filet $52] so she knows the texture and commented that this steak's texture was tougher than most filets. I commented that my rib eye [American Wagyu Eye of Rib $65] was a lot smaller than the filet she got (yes, I am aware that it was a smaller portion than a common rib eye since I asked how many ounces it was). We came to the conclusion that our dishes were mixed up. We ended up sending her steak back, which didn't really do much since it came back just "heated," it was still not to our desired temperature. Such a disappointment. Aside from the negatives listed, everything else was pretty good! We ordered the Alaskan King Crab Cake [$25] which was definitely shareable. Fresh crab was used and fresh ingredients. Also got the Gratin Potatoes [$14] for a side along with Baby Carrots [$14]. Both sides were delicious, but we liked the baby carrots more. The highlight of the meal was probably dessert. We opted for the "Taste of Strawberry' [$14] since we both love strawberries. While the actual sliced strawberries were sour, the mousse and cream were yummy. App, sides & dessert is what earned this place a total of 2 stars. Location - Located on Coronado Island, Upper deck area of the building though, so look up when you drive by! No problems with GPS navigation. Can't speak to parking, as we took a ride there, but just keep in mind traffic when you go and give yourself time to find parking if you don't want to pay. Ambiance - Inside was nice. Typical sort of upscale beach vibes. Outdoor patio area looked really pretty, and had a great view. I think it would be equally nice to host a reception, business dinner or just date night. Inside and out were both great and the restrooms were very clean and nice. Service - Our server was knowledgeable and friendly, as well as the "bus people" and additional service personnel who refilled our waters, took away plates, etc. Everyone was very professional and nice. Drinks - They have a very extensive alcohol/wine selection (full bar from what I could tell), plus a robust cocktail menu. Less on the side of beers, so if you're a craft beer type, this might not be the spot. The Sommelier came directly to the table and helped us choose the wines for the evening, which was nice since the wine book was VERY thick and almost overwhelming in how many there were. I appreciate a good selection, but it was a long, long list. They did have a quick reference page of bottles under $100 which would have proved helpful, if the sommelier wasn't there, I think. Food & Price - We were a party of 4 and did the Chef's Experience, 5-course menu. It was well paced, well prepared and overall a good value ($165 per person). I don't think it's a "fault" in a way, but just note, the entree (steaks) and sides served with it, as well as the dessert course were HUGE. We didn't finish them. Be sure to bring at least 4-6 people if you are going to go with the Chef's choice menu. I honestly didn't really look much at the menu, so I can't speak to the ala carte options, unfortunately. Overall, this is a really pretty place and I would go again if invited, but I don't know that it would make my top 10 list to show a person who didn't live in SD. I think it's good, but wasn't great in some ways that I might have expected. We saw our server once to take our order and never again. We ordered mashed potatoes and they came after we finished our entire meal. The stake we ordered was filet mignon, it tasted more like a tri-tip it was so poorly seasoned and cooked. We would never go back here, even if someone paid us to. We spent 500$ here.
