My friends and I, about 4 people went to State Line after a referral from a friend. We were seated right away, and our order was taken by a grumpy waitress. The food came out pretty quickly, and it was all pretty good. If we needed anything, such as more napkins, creamer, or syrup, it qas very difficult to get a hold of our waitress. I'm honestly surprised this place only has an average of 3 stars. Me and my gf loved it here. This was my second time being here, my first time was a few years ago with a friend. And I'm in the area this weekend so I decided to try this spot again because I remember enjoying it last time. We got here a little bit before 1PM on Saturday and we were seated immediately. We got a nice booth by the front door, a bus boy served us water right away and we didn't have to wait long before our drink orders, and then our food orders were taken by our attentive waiter - and this was despite them being pretty busy. Tables were sufficiently spaced out so customers weren't too close, and all the staff were wearing masks properly, which is always comforting during these times. For drinks, we were both still a bit tired (we had a late start to the day) so we both got caffeinated drinks. I got an affogato (hot espresso with a scoop or two of ice cream) and my gf got a cafe mocha. Both were delicious, and a little bit sweet but not overly so, and the presentation on the cafe mocha was nice. It comes with rock candy which is great if you want to dissolve it in the drink to up the sweetness, or just eat straight up! For an appetizer we got the thai chili wings. For our main meals, my gf got the broccoli omelet with home fries. I got my go to at diners - a chicken cordon bleu panini with fries (normally french fries, but this time, waffle fries). The thai chili wings exceeded both our expectations. I really wanted them, but to be perfectly honest I expected them to be underwhelmingly average. These were anything but. These were some of the best wings I've had in a while. The kin outside of each wing was perfectly crispy and crunchy; the meat inside was perfectly moist and the meat just fell off the bone; and this was consistent across every single wing. I also really enjoyed that the wings were not just smothered in the thai chili sauce. The sauce was poured on after these were cooked. One or two pieces didn't have the sauce poured on them in fact so I got the chance to taste the wings without sauce and they were just as delicious. The wings were also sizable, which definitely made me feel like I was getting a good deal with these. I can't speak too much on the broccoli omelet as my gf ordered that and I didn't try it, but it didn't look bad at all, and she said it was good. The chicken cordon bleu panini was delicious as well. I guess you could say I'm kind of picky about my chicken cordon bleu paninis because the one I always get at my local diner is fantastic, so the bar is high on that for me. A lot of places don't do it well, but this place certainly does! The bread was toasted just right, the chicken and the ham were juicy, not dried out, and the cheese was nice and melted. It was packed with flavor. The only thing small thing is that it could have been a little hotter. I thought the price of the wings were a little high when I first saw it, but when you consider their size and deliciousness, I wasn't too bothered by the price ($9.95 I believe). The rest of what we ordered were average priced for diner food. Despite being so busy and right on rt. 17, the place has ample parking, which is accessible from the highway and the street that runs parallel to rt. 17. While I like the food mostly the place is dirty . I go here a lot . I like the people, staff and the food is ok (mostly breakfast ) but ... they are dirty . The salt And pepper shakers are filthy I mean people have scratched in the dirt on the glass bottles . The ketchup bottles are filthy too ! The floor is constantly dirty even at slow times which lets me know if the items out in the open are dirty I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like . Although this is a diner and probably there breakfast is way better than the dinner foods. I feel like they should only stick to breakfast foods. My friends and I only order apps. We saw on the menu how tasty, and crispy the calamari looked and all of us got different items. One of my friends asked to have her chicken tenders and fries really crispy. I ordered buffalo shrimp only, and my other friend ordered the fried calamari. Once our food came out. The calamari did not look as the same on the menu. My buffalo shrimp wasn't crispy. My other friend chicken and fries wasn't crispy. All of our foods taste like it wasn't fresh. It was more like it came out the microwave because our food arrived 7 minutes to our table at the same time. We were very upset how the texture was off, and concern why all of our food arrived fast. We told the guy how the chicken tenders wasn't good he offer to make another, we declined. We rather wanted it to be taking off the bill. So our server was nice enough to remove it off the bill. The service here is horrendous. I came here around 9:45pm on a Sunday. We walk in and we were looking for a hostess to get seated but you can't really tell who works here or not. We stood around for a few minutes and wasn't able to get anyones attention. So then a young lady walks in and stands behind us. A man who's name I didn't get walks right past us and goes to greet her. I walk out really upset and my niece stays behind to find out why we were ignored. This man says he saw us standing there and didn't know why. He wasn't sure if we were paying or picking up. Which doesn't make sense because you weren't sure why the young lady behind us was there but you moved fast to find out. Also the line to pay was going in the opposite direction. This is your typical jersey diner but it's open 24/7 and has a full bar! Conveniently located on State RT. 17. Came here on a Saturday afternoon, it was pretty busy but there wasn't a wait. I like the interior of the diner. It looks more like a restaurant. Very modern decor and the booths are really comfortable. The menu is huge, just like every other diner in NJ... You could spend days reading through the entire thing. Coffee was eh. For an appetizer we got the pulled pork BBQ sliders- GET THESE! They're delicious. I had the apple salad. Basically spinach with walnuts, radish, crumbled blue cheese, and apples. It came with an apple vinaigrette dressing which was different- I liked it but the salad wasn't anything special. Not very many ingredients in it either. They should have added dried cranberries to it. It woulda been better. My boyfriend got a patty melt which is a cheeseburger with sautéed onions on rye bread. For a side he got zucchini sticks. He was happy. The zucchini sticks were really good. I was disappointed in the small selection of soups they offer. They had Greek lemon, minestrone, and some other random soup. They didn't even have French onion daily- which most diners do offer every day of the week. I have eaten in this diner more times than I can count over the years. It used to be pretty decent food but has recently gone down hill. I've been going every Saturday for the past few weeks but today will be my last time. We waited for quite a bit for someone to take our order but they sure got the food to us fast. So fast, in fact, that they they didn't even have time to cook it. I specifically asked for well done French fries and they were brought out raw. Didn't bother to cook the grilled cheese either. i understand that they need to turn over tables quickly but if they think I'm going to pay a premium for whatever slop they feel like throwing at me they are sadly mistaken. Today I ordered a body builder omelet, I rarely put salt on my food when I dine out, but the omelet was so bland I had no choose but to. I am allergic to tomatoes and I mentioned this and asked to have no tomatoes near the burger..... not only were the tomatoes disgustingly cut, they were on my food so I had to throw it out. Was shocked that I could order for delivery from this diner. It's always been top notch when eating there. I took a chance and did online order for delivery. I have never received an order so fast. It's was drop and go delivery. Came in less than 20 minutes. I ordered scrambled eggs over corn beef hash, side of home fries. Now eggs are tricky. They cool down so fast. Haven't been to this place in a long time. When we did it was usually just for breakfast, food was okay. Well we were out and it was late we were hungry. Nothing was good. Have lived in the area over 30 years and have watched this place steadily decline. Service is generally below average and the staff seems very unhappy. Last time we were there several tables had complaints about food, service etc. And please don't use the COVID excuse--needs new management. The older gentlemen who seems to be the manager is surly and gruff. Last time we went was 530pm-is that really the night shift?! Find that hard to believe. Issues are not only related to shortage-- place has a much different feel compared to when the manager was a very nice woman in her 40s/50s who was there for years. So disappointed. This has been our go-to diner for years. Always try and give the place the benefit of the doubt but this last visit sealed the deal - my family of 5 (husband and 3 children) won't be going back. My food was inedible - I would have sent it back but once the plate was placed in front of me - I never saw our waitress again. Also my son's order was incorrect (he had ordered his buffalo chicken dish without blue cheese (but instead ranch) and he wouldn't eat it - tried to get someone's attention to get our waitress but no one would pay me any mind. We only saw our server a couple of times, once to take our order and the last time when he bought the bill, and we had to hunt him down to get his attention. My wife had what was supposed to be a meatball Parmigiana over linguini..Horrible! Pasta was dry over even with what they call marinara sauce. They must have heated it in the microwave the way the cheese melted. My daughter had the broiled salmon with crab meat. The salmon was bland, and the crab meat definitely came out of a can. I had the open sliced steak with garlic bread with sauted spinach, and it tasted great. It had to be that they cooked it when I ordered it. Everything else on my plate was trash. Onion rings had no flavor, and the fries were ok. My biggest problem besides the service is that they do not serve any bottled soft drinks. Fountain drinks only, unless you want liquor. I'm sorry, but I grew up in NYC, and the water is drinkable. If the water tastes like it is pumped straight from the Hudson River. I can't enjoy it. There Fountain Drinks and lemonade are made with this water. It's not filtered at all. Hence, give customers the option to order a canned or bottled drink.
