Ooof... Had a Saturday afternoon to myself at home so decided to take a walk down to Alamitos Beach to see the ocean. Was craving sushi this day and decided to stop into Sushi Beluga for the first time. Great reviews on the quality of their fish. A bit expensive, but wanted to try what the chef would recommend, hoping that it wasn't too busy, so could strike up a conversation and learn some things. I stopped in about 5 minutes after their posted start time (12:15), and there were already two tables seated at the outdoor patio, so a good sign. The single server was busy servicing one of the tables. So I walked by her, going inside. It was empty inside, except for the sushi chef who was busy working. Asked him, if I could sit at the bar and he said sure: "Anywhere you like". So I sat at the bar spot closest to the wall, not wanting to hog up too much space. All the place settings had been set for each spot, and there were paper take-out pamphlets that doubled as menus, so studied that for a bit. Soon the efficient waitress came back, noticed where I was sitting and promptly brought ice water without a word and left. I kept studying the menu. She came from behind with an 'excuse me', and proceeded to stuff more paper menus into the slot to my left (filling it up), making me move. OK, so I must have sat in a bad spot (no reason to fill up a slot that already had menus, especially when she seemed busy). So I moved one spot over. The waitress had come back from outside passing by, and I let her know I had a question. Without missing a beat, she gave a quick 'Just a minute', and right back into the kitchen. She came out a bit later with drinks for the table outside, right by me without a word. At this point, I addressed the chef right in front of me, to ask him what he recommended (just to see if he spoke

). He was straight to the point, saying the king salmon, spanish mackerel, Yellowtail, and seabream. So I knew I wasn't going to get any detailed conversation, but told him I've never had seabream before (to be honest, I didn't even...

know it was a fish). He said it was mild fish, similar to amberjack. So that helped. He then asked/told me "You don't like salmon". Thinking back, maybe he wasn't asking a question, but I took it as an opportunity to discuss, so told him I much prefer tuna, and asked him. He mentioned he had toro and bluefin, so I asked him the market price for the toro, which he knew (too high for me). Then I waited for the waitress. She came back and asked if I had made up my mind, never acknowledging that I had asked a question before. So I placed my order and she left. As she passed again, I said 'Hi' with a raised hand , but she didn't hear it. I was irritated and said loudly, "Hello!' as she went to the kitchen. This time, she came back out. I asked to add a bowl of white rice, and her response was 'You want it, NOW?'. "No, with my food, please". It was clear the chef was just ignoring what was going on. So I stewed and thought about just standing up and leaving (glad I didn't). Instead, I moved myself to a table inside facing a window, so I could at least have something to look out at while waiting. Nobody said anything. Each of them had a job to do, and woe to the customer if not understanding who does what. The waitress was efficient, keeping my water filled, and bringing out each dish immediately as the chef finished, telling me what it was. And I have to admit, the dishes were marvelous. It came in this order. Amberjack Crudo ($22) - loved this. It was 6 pieces of buttery hamachi, dressed in a ponzu sauce, with crunchy flakes on top. Would have loved to know more about this, but as the menu didn't describe, who else would I have asked? Octopus Karaage ($9.99) - so much better for me than takoyaki, mostly tenacle with a light batter, well deep-fried. Really enjoyed it. Bluefin Tuna ($9.99) - didn't look as pretty as others and looked a bit old, but it tasted fine, with no sinew. The two nigiri pieces had a very generous amount. Steam Rice ($2.50) - wish it had come at the beginning, before the crudo. Spanish Mackerel ($10) - two nigiri pieces and it was a revelation. Neatly made and dressed, it still had the distinct flavor of mackerel but was a lot more buttery than any other version I've ever had. Don't think I can go back to the cheaper cuts often served for sushi specials at other places. Seabream ($10) - two nigiri, first time and won't be last. It's a great sushi fish, mild and smooth. Was the one time when the waitress advised, "don't dip in soy sauce, it's already dressed". I kept my interaction minimal at this point, no acknowledgement unless directly asked a question, moving my empty plate to the end when done, and presenting my credit card when I wanted to pay. I don't mind minimalistic service when the food is this good, but the service (of both) was really, really poor.

which melts in your mouth with umami flavors. They also carry uni, giant clam and ankimo but sell out fast. Everything I've tasted has been incredibly fresh and satisfying. From the kitchen, I really like the al dente edamame with added spicy garlic crunch, their take on Agedashi tofu with spicy red radish and fried onion, baked green mussels and seafood tempura. The agedashi tofu and tempura were executed well, crispy and love the added shiso leaf and umeboshi paste to add flavor to the fish tempura. The sushi chef, Kay, and staff are so attentive and nice. Everything came out quickly and empty plates were cleared promptly too. The sushi bar seats about 8 people (my preference) while there are about 6 small tables. Metered street parking can be tough in this area. Kay said the original Manhattan Beach location is better in terms of space and recognition. I will try to keep Sushi Beluga here with my support!

three items for a great price. This is a great option for non-sushi eaters and sushi eaters alike because the options include chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, tempura, and several roll options. Service is usually pretty good. They have some outdoor seating available in front of the restaurant, which is lovely during good weather. A great place for a solo dinner, date, or a friend/family dinner.

had more room in my stomach I would have ordered more!! Ambiance: I came in around 3pm (Thursday) and it was pretty quiet in there. Granted I was the only one in! I got to enjoy sitting at the bar which made it easier to order with the chef. Highly recommend this place! Parking is tough, but its definitely worth finding it where you can and taking a nice stroll to grab food here and then go to the beach.

Agedashi Tofu - unique with fried onion, chili radish and light dashi

Sushi Beluga is easily my favorite sushi bar in DTLB. Named after beluga caviar, they carry a variety of fresh fish that you won't find at basic sushi spots. Their shipments usually come in on Wednesdays and Saturdays so you'll get the best pickings on those days. I typically come in on Sunday evenings and have been lucky to get some live amaebi (sweet shrimp), fresh sea bream, halibut with truffle and caviar, yellowtail belly, shima Aji (striped jack) and toro (really fatty tuna). They're also known for their seared Aburi Miso Cod, which melts in your mouth with umami flavors. They also carry uni, giant clam and ankimo but sell out fast. Everything I've tasted has been incredibly fresh and satisfying. From the kitchen, I really like the al dente edamame with added spicy garlic crunch, their take on Agedashi tofu with spicy red radish and fried onion, baked green mussels and seafood tempura. The agedashi tofu and tempura were executed well, crispy and love the added shiso leaf and umeboshi paste to add flavor to the fish tempura. The sushi chef, Kay, and staff are so attentive and nice. Everything came out quickly and empty plates were cleared promptly too. The sushi bar seats about 8 people (my preference) while there are about 6 small tables. Still one of my top favorite sushispots. I drive down from Koreatown just to eat here! It's THAT good! Every roll just has their unique flavor and you can taste the quality in each bite~ Today I ordered the Cajun Tuna Aburi Roll. 10/10. I ate that roll so fast! I had to stop myself after the fourth piece to remind myself to slow down, enjoy and savor it! The sauce is almost like a spicy mayo, lighter and flavorful, not too spicy at all. I also ordered the Sauteed Snow Crab Basil Garlic Roll. Personally 10/10, if you love snow crab. The gobo adds a refreshing crunch in each bite. Last but not least, the Aburi Engawa and Aburi Miso Salmon. The engawa today was a little on the tougher side than I remember, but it was still delicious! Might have needed some extra searing to soften it more. Regardless still a 10/10 ! And you guessed it, 10/10 for aburi miso salmon. Sushi Beluga really has THE best miso sauce. No place compares! The service was swift & attentive. The server and chef checked to make sure I was doing alright. If I had more room in my stomach I would have ordered more!! Super yummy option near the beach! Food Ordered Baked Green Mussels: delicious and creamy. I loved the flavor profile. This was recommended by the staff. I would order again. Salmon Lemon Roll: The salmon was fresh and the roll well balanced. The ginger sauce was enjoyable and not too heavy. Shima Aji and Seabream: These were recommended by the sushi chef and they were very good cuts of fish. Both were fresh and had a good firm texture. Service: Staff was very friendly and made great suggestions based on my preferences! Ambiance: Cute little small spot with plenty of daylight from the windows: There's a sushi bar section in addition to the tables. Overall: I would eat here again!

What an under rated sushi spot. It was sooo good. The service was fast and the server was super nice and attentive. The restroom were clean. The nigiri rolls were like buttery they were so good and fresh ! The baked mussels were out of this world so different than I've ever tried in any location. Usually every baked mussels taste the same, but this one had avocados in it I believe. Just so different and so delicious. Overall, a great place ! I went here twice in a span of three days. So I'm definitely a fan !

Food: A-. I think this food is the best sushi spot I've been in in the LBC over the place that requires reservations or the Sushi Mafia (which we do like for quick sushi). Here you have really good sushi without the "do you have reservation?" Service: C. Short-staffed in my fiancé's opinion however I beg to differ. There's only three other parties in here so no need for a ton of staff. The sushi maker is attentive, more so the problem is they don't have two of the items on the menu we ask for which makes you wonder how many other items they don't have: black cod and Sapporo on tap - Nadda. Ambiance: B. Right in the center of the city so location-location-location. Inside, you can walk right in to the sushi bar which we like. The place is lit beautifully with plenty of artificial botanicals which still gives you that healthy feel. Music is popular pop - really nice for a Wednesday night.

Sushi Beluga is is a very cozy spot in Downtown Long Beach and one of the best in the area. They really focus first on the quality and freshness of the fish, and the preparation shows it. They have two sushi chefs, Kay and Jeff who are both great and kind. If you have kids be sure to ask for any roll with a "Kids Cut"; which is cut in half width-wise for smaller bites, while maintaining the same ingredient ratios, plus they get more pieces! Kay knows us so well that he will have a California Roll with Soy Paper kids cut for my son right after we walk in. My favorite item is the live scallop which is usually only available on weekends. An order comes with both a scallop sashimi and a dynamite (mayo sauce) style. They have a large selection of different tempuras that you can order two pieces at a time and are made fresh to order. The tempura batter is light, delicate, and always crispy, and the tempura sauce is a flavorful clear broth that's served hot, something I've never seen anywhere else. They also have a rotating daily selection which features their freshest catches of the day like Sea Bream, Uni, and other higher end stuff. They also have many appetizers and the usual cooked items like teriyaki chicken and steak. I would recommend this place to anyone who really appreciates fresh fish that's artfully prepared. Parking is a little difficult as they don't have their own lot and you have to find street parking. If you see Kay, be sure to tell him Paul sent you!

Best sushi in Long Beach from their miso soup to their crispy tuna, aburi miso cod, yuzu roll I mean literally anything I've had here has been exquisite one of the freshest fish I've had in any sushi restaurant don't forget to order their black snapper whether it be sashimi or sushi you can't go wrong and if you're looking for a great deal go for their assorted sushi or assorted sashimi plates which come with a nice and filling combo as well as ordering "choose 2 or 3 items option". Staff is the best in the business very friendly always with a smile on their face and always open for a nice little chat. Love this place !

I was suprised that this sushi place was right next to the new condos on the corner of Ocean and Alamitos. I am glad I found it. You will need to find street parking, mostly off Ocean. They have nice vibrant decor inside and is very clean place. I do feel a Japanese atmosphere in here, and I always like to be transported somewhere during my meals. The waiters greet you promptly and you can pick where you want to sit. They have an extensive menu. The have different kinds of tempura like shrimp, vegetables, and my favorite is white fish with basil tempura. the white fish is a very delicate flavor, and I never had it before until this place. They also have miso soups. The sushi is diverse and there is something there to satisfy your cravings. Always with a side of wasabi and pickled ginger. The platings are always well decorated with sauces. They also serve Sapporo and hot sake which I love to have with my sushi. I usually ask for waters and they bring with ice and a smile. The prices are really good for the excellent quality of food. The service is great. The sushi and the environment really makes me happy when I visit. Worth checking out and putting on your list of places to visit.

I've been saying that there is no great quality sushi in DT Long Beach for years now and I can finally no longer claim it. Sushi Beluga's produce quality and sushi cuts are what one would expect when eating in Japan. They have an extensive menu selection -- I've tried variety of their appetizers, rolls, hand rolls, sashimi, all great!. Many items come the traditional miso soup and ginger dressing salad. I'm partial to their nigiri, and my favorite is the Omakase option, entrusting the Chef to create the selection. The staff is exceptional, always very welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The place is very cozy, with corner-shaped sushi bar and tables both inside and outside. It's just far enough from Ocean Blvd that you don't get all the street noise when seated outside and the patio is dog friendly. This is the most underrated restaurant in DTLBC, highly recommend!!!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Good sushi and service in a casual, comfortable environment. A friend suggested this place for dinner since it was within walking distance from her hotel. I hadn't been here since it changed over from Poke Cat, but it looked nice enough. It was surprisingly not too crowded on a Saturday evening, and our party of three was able to get seated right away. We decided to share the #802, which is a party platter for 3 people--$145, as of this writing. You get nigiri tuna, salmon, white fish, albacore, aburi salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, Uni, spicy tuna, salmon roe, rainbow roll, and SPA roll. It's a great deal--turned out to be a lot of food. The fish was nice and fresh, even the Uni, but the rice was a bit too cool and hard. We also got a large beer and hot tea. Service was friendly and prompt, and we had a very nice time. Probably the nicest sushi place I've been to in the downtown area.

I will be dreaming about this place for the foreseeable future. Came in on a rainy Friday during Lent. The staff immediately greeted us with a friendly smile, and we were seated right away. We ordered a platter for 3 and some hot sake. The fish was fresh, and the sake was warm and delicious. The sea bream with yuzu blew us away. Would absolutely recommend. Had a birthday celebration at Sushi Beluga & I've been back ever since. It's hands down one of the BEST sushi places I've been to so far. The quality of fish is absolutely delicious and every bite is perfectly flavored & it leaves you craving for more. This place is definitely a GEM & my bf loves it too! Some of my favorite dishes include... - Miso salmon aburi sushi - Salmon lemon roll - Yuzu roll - Baked scallop roll - Lobster roll - Baked crab hand roll - Baked mussels The salmon sampler is also a DELICIOUS option to sample different flavors. Spicy edamame was also good & a great starting appetizer. I'm hungry as I'm talking about it now... The service was fast and we were seated immediately on a weekend night. The restaurant provided an intimate ambiance with calm lighting. There are minimalistic nature inspired designs/decor which is very soothing & nice to be in. I really liked the nature inspired wall. Can't wait to come back here again to get my sushi fix! read more

I have found a secret hidden spot which has phenomenal sushi. This tiny restaurant is tucked between to buildings off the Main Street, you would pass by it and not know of it's existence, in which case you would be sorely disappointed. One of the few sushi restaurants to stay open past 9 pm and also one of the few in that time frame that isn't a fusion spot serving all things Asian. This place is specific, authentic, and delicious. The wife and I came here and tried a bit of everything. We sat at the sushi bar and watched the master at work. The staff was impeccable and personalized things to help accommodate everyone with super friendly and excellent service. They are still in the 3 month soft opening stages. However, after coming here at 8:30 pm on a Sunday they got slammed around 9:15 it was difficult for people to have seats. So get here and get here early! read more

What a hidden gem! Sushi Beluga is if not,the most underrated sushi spot around. Sushi rolls were pretty good but what differentiates it from others is the freshness & quality of the sashimi. Reminds me of the quality in Japan/ Asia. Service was great and ambiance was very comfortable, with unique decorations. Will definitely be back, moving them up to the top of my sushi list in the area read more

We've been looking for a quality sushi spot and are so happy that Sushi Beluga opened! We started off with the miso soup & hot green tea (not on the menu but they do have it). This food is incredible, the service was extremely attentive as well as extensive, and the ambience/environment made for a great evening out. The salmon lemon roll had a perfect addition of citrus that created a taste in sushi that my girlfriend and I haven't had before. The cucumber boat was incredibly refreshing as well as savory with a nice kick. This place is seriously so yummy!!! I've been twice now. The first I was solo and came in during their soft opening. One roll with the crunchy shrimp and tuna and a soy paper was absolutely one of the best rolls I've had in a long time! It hit the spot. I also ordered shrimp, onion, and broccoli tempura. They are separately ordered but believe me you want to try them! So good!!! Not over salty like some I've had in the past. The broccoli was also cooked perfectly for the tempura. It was crispy but not too much tempura batter. It was perfectly crisped. I have to also mention I ordered tuna nigiri. Literally melted in my mouth. I had to order a second order of everything I had just to take home to my boyfriend who had just gotten home from work and couldn't join me. He loved it so that he came with me to my second visit. It was so delicious! I believe the catch of the day was either scallop or white fish which was in the tiger milk and ahi Amarillo sauce which was a sour like sauce which pairs well with the fish. It was also a great dipping sauce for the other sushi we got. If I could, I would have slurped the whole thing (the sauce) lol. Blue Fin Sashimi: with kizami wasabi and special soy sauce. If you have tried blue fin you are missing out. The sashimi just melts in your mouth and has such an easy chew to it. Sushi Nikkei Tasting (8 pc sushi): consists of 2 pcs of sweet salmon (parrillera sauce), tuna power (parrillera sauce, aji Amarillo, and chalaquita), Parmesan scallops, and Asian shiromi (white fish, Asian sauce, quinoa pop, and lemon). My boyfriend and I had 1 pc each. The salmon and Parmesan scallops were my favorite. My boyfriend's favorite was the Asian shiromi and tuna power. All the toppings complimented each other so well. Acebichado: which was a specialty roll with crispy shrimp, avocado topped with tuna, acebicado sauce, togarashi, and green onion Dusty roll: which was another specialty roll with crispy shrimp, avocado topped with octopus in ninja sauce, Parmesan, and tare OBA roll: which was another specialty roll that had crispy salmon, avocado topped with salmon , parrillera, jalapeno sauce, and chalaquita All the rolls were good and the different sauces complimented each other and the fish. My aunt politely asked him to give us a minute, and thankfully he walked away. Maybe when you see a family actively calculating a bill, that's your cue to...actually give them a minute. We had been sitting on the outdoor patio talking for a bit after paying, which is pretty normal for my family. Before leaving, I went inside to ask where the restroom was. The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. It's unfortunate because the food had some highlights, and the restaurant itself has a cute atmosphere. But the service made it feel like customers are viewed more as transactions than guests. Between hovering over us during payment and questioning whether I even belonged there after spending money, I left feeling more unwelcomed than satisfied. I'll happily support a restaurant that appreciates my business instead of making me feel like I have to prove I earned the right to use the restroom after paying for dinner.

Sushi Beluga in Long Beach is a gem that has quickly become my go-to for sushi, reminding me of my unforgettable visit to Japan. The Aburi Trio is a standout--delicious, vibrant, and a unique experience that's unlike anything I've tried before. While the prices are on the higher side, the exceptional quality and stellar customer service make it worth every penny. Every visit to Sushi Beluga is a treat, and I've enjoyed sampling different items from the menu each time. I'm consistently amazed at how everything is top-notch and delicious. I rotate usually around the same few fish and the quality of the fish is good every time. I think the only sushi I didn't like was unagi. Tasted microwaved and old, just not good. The pacing of the meal was honestly one of the best parts. Dishes came out steadily without crowding the table, and everything felt very natural and relaxed. The tuna crispy rice was fantastic and a little different from the usual presentation. Perfect crisp on the outside, almost caramelized, with really airy spicy tuna on top that reminded me more of a tartare texture than the heavier versions you sometimes get elsewhere. We also had bluefin tuna, toro, salmon sashimi, a spicy scallop roll, and the Extreme Crunch Roll with light eel sauce, which ended up being surprisingly balanced and not over-the-top despite the name. Even the iced green tea stood out. Bright green, almost cloudy, super refreshing, and honestly exactly what I wanted with sushi. Service was excellent both visits. It felt very team-oriented behind the sushi bar and on the floor, which kept everything moving smoothly without feeling rushed. A couple practical notes: parking is easy overall, but the lot is shared with the motel, so just be mindful where you park and try to stay closer toward the restaurant side of the lot. Also, this feels much better suited for couples or small groups than large parties. Four people would be ideal. Six is probably pushing it unless the restaurant is unusually quiet. Really happy we gave this place another shot because it ended up being one of the more satisfying sushi dinners we've had in a while.

The sides didn't look especially appealing at first glance, but I went with the japchae and ended up enjoying it. However, when I arrived, the staff mentioned they were out of several menu items and only had a limited selection available (katsu, a spicy option, beef rib, and bulgogi). Considering it was around 1 PM on a Friday--and with the Grand Prix in town and the location being right across from the courthouse--I was surprised the place was completely empty. It feels like a missed opportunity not to offer specials or even a simple happy hour to bring people in. Overall, the food carries this place, and I hope they continue to build on that while improving the ambiance and menu availability. Hope this helps!

You can really tell they don't cut corners when it comes to quality. From the first dish to the last, everything was just so good. It's the kind of food that makes you pause for a second and just appreciate how amazing it tastes. Definitely one of those spots you keep thinking about long after you leave. If you haven't tried Seulicious yet, you're seriously missing out. I can't wait to go back!
