Ate here for the first time with my husband and two boys. We live in waking distance to Japantown so that's where we usually head when we want Japanese. Probably ok for ordering or take out but would not go again for dine in unless it's busy everywhere. With a sudden craving for sushi, I found Sushi Kan and called to see if their open, coronavirus times. They were but closing in 20 mins. It was suggested I place my order over the phone so they could begin preparing it. I was right around the corner, the girl who answered the phone said she'd wait for me if I was unable to get there before they closed. Nowadays, how kool is that!! Ordered salmon nigiri and a salmon roll. It came w/a salad and was fantastic. Most definitely satisfied my sushi "Jones." If you are anywhere near this establishment, I am jealous. We came here during the week for Happy Hour. They have a great deal where rolls are 20% off and $1 hot sake! Yes!! The place is clean and service was friendly and attentive. We tried several rolls over the course of the evening. Many had very cheeky names like orgasm, Victoria's Secret, and Hiroshima Fry (what??). We really enjoyed all of them! I love their food here. I love sushi. I always order here almost everyday. It close to my house and I always order here for my lunch. I love their philly roll it's one of my favorite!! I order bento box sometimes for my kids they loved it too!! The staff are so nice and really helpful I always order there everyday and I know they work too hard!! I was disappointed with my experience at this sushi place, both in terms of the quality of the food and the concern for customers. I ordered the Gesso Fry (deep fried breaded octopus) for appetizer and Nigiri delux for the entree. The Nigiri platter came out first, which I guess wasn't too big a deal, so I started with that. In not only one, but TWO cuts of the nigiri, I had huge fish bones. You can imagine my shock eating it in one bite, then having to spit the whole thing out so I could locate the thing. I put the chewed Nigiri cuts with the extracted fish bones on a side plate and gave them to the waitress to please alert the chef. She didn't apologize but just walked away with it. I finished the rest of the Nigiri, but ate it in very small bites (not the way it's supposed to be enjoyed) and thankfully there were no more bones. After I had finished, the plate was cleared but still no appetizer. A while later it came out, freshly fried, so I'm not sure why it didn't get made until after the meal- that's not what an appetizer is. After I finished, and the waitress cleared the appetizer plate, I asked if anything was done about the two regurgitated nigiri pieces. (Like, was I going to get a new cut that I could actually eat?) She just said "Yea, I showed the chef" and handed me the bill. No apology, no remake, and I was charged the full bill. I'm really not sure what I could have done differently. It is my understanding that traditional sushi chef's would not permit such an experience, especially since we are trusting their skills to consume a Nigiri cut with proper one bite etiquette. Second time here yesterday for my friend and I's double-birthday. So you'd assume my first time was pretty great if I chose this for our birthdays.. well the one roll we drove 40 mins for (their Veggie Dragon...it's FaNtASTiC) couldn't be made "because of economic reasons..." for whatever that means. Personally, if cost of ingredients goes up, I could charge more? Or at least modify the roll for us..take it off your menu? This was super disappointing and the way our server handled it was poor. I've come here for a few years now and the sushi is pretty good but the service has gone downhill. We came in around 7pm on a Friday night and it wasn't busy at all but we felt extremely rushed the whole time. We sat down right away and within a minute, the server (older asian lady) asked us if we were ready. We asked for a few more minutes and then ordered. I asked for straws after we ordered and then some spicy mayo, and each time she walked away as I was talking. When we were almost done eating, as we were taking our last bite she was hovering over us waiting to take the plates away right away. The last straw was when the check came, she had already check marked the 18 percent tip option herself which I found so rude. We were only a party of 2, and would have tipped the 18 percent anyway but the fact that she had checked that off with the pen herself is not okay. Despite being shown as a highly rated restaurant, the experience that I had here taught me that choosing a restaurant solely based on good ratings can be a huge mistake. The reason is that the restaurant found a way to rig the system by offering a FREE Green Tea ice cream in exchange for a 5-star rating. When we visited the restaurant at 7 p.m., I noticed there was only 1 customer inside, and 0 to-go order. Even though it often was not a good sign, I still had no apprehension because of the high rating. However, things suddenly went South when I asked the server for the restaurant's Wifi password. None of the staff knew until a middle aged Asian lady showed up and asked for my reason of asking for Wifi!? I had to give my phone to her so she would write the password herself. And to top if off, she said as I quote "I only give you this time. I won't give it to you next time." I thanked her, and asked her about the review for free ice cream promotion. No matter how I expressed my eagerness to learn, she replied "I don't understand your English." It was hard for me to understand why she did not care to pursue a career in education or being English teacher, instead of staying in the service industry. But afterwards, she confirmed that I could get a free ice cream on the same visit if I used her Wifi to write a good review. I should have recommended her add a service charge to any customers who used restaurant's Wifi as an effective way to boost the business. About the food, it was another disappointment. We ordered 3 rolls: Sushi on the Beach, Hiroshima Fry, and Volcano Island. The rice ratio was alright, but lacked of vinegar punch and the rice was even colder than my ex's heart, and the fish was just bland as I barely tasted anything is of good quality. Furthermore, the crunch that was put on top of the Sushi on the Beach roll tasted rancid like days aged using the oil that was older than me. Volcano Island had a weird combination of Korean-inspired kimchi marinated fishes which left me questioning the authenticity and the origin of the sushi. All in all, this was not a pleasant visit, and even though I truly loved Green Tea ice cream, I would rather buy a pint of Haagen-Dazs Green Tea from Walmart for $5 than lying to other sushi craving fellows who just wanted a good sushi and/or free Wifi. read more

This is a small restaurant that packs a punch with fresh fish and Uni! The service was good, but the freshness of the fish & uni is what will keep me returning! They get their their uni from Santa Barbara and yes, it literally tastes like the ocean. The Scallops are sweet, and the Toro melts in your mouth! I can't wait to return. read more

There was not anyone when we came in and it was empty, that speaks to their popularity and quality. They checked off the gratuity bonus on the check when we paid. I was helping someone move so I ordered food from here as it's nearby. However, I realized I couldn't eat while waiting to coordinate with others in my car since it's parked in a garage without reception. I asked if I could quickly sit down in the restaurant, but the hostess wasn't welcoming. It made me feel uncomfortable. I told her I won't make a mess, and would clean everything up myself if that's the concern. I just really needed a place to sit temporarily. She hesitantly let me sit down. I was also super thirsty from the move, and wanted to ask for a cup of water, but didn't because she made me feel like it wasn't acceptable for me to do so. Food and service is awful. Food: You can tell how good any restaurant is by the clientele in relation to the ethnic food. The baked mussels we're extremely chewy as if it were frozen and refrozen vs fresh. The eggs on top didn't burst, instead it felt like you're eating sand. Even the sauce didn't mesh while chewing, the quality was awful and should've been thrown in the trash. The sushi (pink bikini = smothered with sauce and couldn't even taste fish, sushi on the beach = lacked flavor, also saucy) Service: Honestly, it was so bad...we waited 15 minutes for the 1st appetizer (fried tofu), another 20 minutes (baked mussels), then at the 45-50 minute mark, I asked the younger girl (the one that worked on 3/26/21 at 8pm) if she could check on our order - immediately she gave me the "stop" hand gesture and said "hold on, I'll get to you"...that wasn't cool as the staff never gave us updates prior to me reaching out. She checked and said they were "working on it and it would be another 5 minutes" 10 minutes pass and I asked the adult lady in the 50's if our food was on the way as it's been over an hour now. She says "sorry, the chef is very busy and I don't want to disturb him". I ask again 5-7 minutes later to her and she says "sorry, he's the only chef, we should hire another person"....they gave no accommodations for wasting our time. It's the lady's job to check on the food or finesse the priority of our food. That's your job unless you want the customer to walk up to a chef and figure it out. That's why you get tips, it's for service. This place is trash. The food is disgusting. The staff themselves are trash. Literally, go find another job - there are plenty that you could be better at.
