All of their fish is really fresh and delicious, melt in your mouth quality and not chewy at all. They also go easy on the amount of rice they use. Some places are all rice and barely any fish. Sushi UYE 2009 #3 Party of 14? Separate checks? NO PROBLEM! AWESOME!!!!! Very accurate order-taking and fantastic service. They don't take reservations so when I called a week in advance, they said to call back the morning of with an exact head count. EXACT?! Are you kidding me?! Have you MET a Yelper? Geez. haha. They were great about it though. I told them 11. 14 showed. The staff handled it with grace and composure. The chef was gracious and very generous with his omakase and his creations were phenomenal (see photos). We drank, we chatted, we ate a whole lot and in the end, Sushi Kinoya did not fail to deliver. Sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. Some of the dishes were quite unorthodox (peppered tuna, seared yellow tail with jalapeno and sauteed onions, etc.) but were tasty all the same. Drink service was fast and the waitress even took the time to chat with us a bit and make some jokes while doing a great job keeping her cool. 14 Yelpers ain't no walk in the park. Menu has a decent variety of items and it seems that their specialty (much like most Korean-owned sushi restaurants) are their rolls. Not to undercut the sashimi, mind you. It was top shelf quality. Establishment is clean and service is definitely with a smile! Compliments of the chef included: Monk Fish Liver - Cooked and marinated in ponzu and garnished with burdock root. Sashimi Mosaic - Tuna, Salmon, Yellow Tail, and two other types of fish I couldn't identify, soaked in ponzu sauce and garnished with sliced tomato, red onion, lemon, and cilantro (which was very refreshing). With this raging review, why only 4/5??? Well, as I've said before, they were great but I've had better. The prices were a bit high for what I got though it's not to say they were exorbitant. I am a fan of sushi and this place was pretty good. We had the white tuna sashimi and the Popcorn Lobster Roll. I was expecting creamy sauce mixed with lobster smothering the california roll but it was popcorn lobster with light sauce drizzled over the california roll. However prepared it was tasty! There were a good selection to choose from on the sushi and sachimi side. The service was awesome and the atmosphere was quaint, facility is very clean and the staff do take good care of you! I was looking to get my sushi fix since I missed Yuki's last sushi UYE, and since I also missed the month they came to Sushi Kinoya, I thought I would give it a try. We came for dinner on a Monday night, wasn't so crowded. I loved the decor and most of all I loved that they were Korean owned. I dunno why, but I tend to lean toward the Korean sushi places. We ordered two rolls, one with some sort of tempura on top and another with spicy tuna and for the life of me I can't remember what they were called. Also I ordered the salmon and the albacore. The salmon was decent but the seared albacore was so good that even my friend who doesn't eat raw fish tried it, and liked it. We even ordered another albacore roll that was yummy. At the end I was stuffed and had my sushi fix! I did take away 1 star for the price being a tad high and no happy hours. But other than that...I would definitely come back to Sushi Kinoya. read more

The last time I was here, was probably December 2009. I moved back to the Bay Area, and have been in search for an awesome sushi joint to replace "Kinoya". -- I have not succeeded. I can still remember the day it had "Grand Opening" above the entrance. My boyfriend of the time and I decided to check it out, since it was new. And that place had become our favorite sushi restaurant. It's a small, cute, clean restaurant, with friendly servers. I think it may be family owned. From what I remember the menu isn't that big, but has enough variety to choose from. My favorite roll is the Baked Salmon Roll. Up in the Bay, it's known as "The Lion King Roll" -- I have no idea why... but out of all the 132132 sushi places I've been to, none make the Baked Salmon Roll amazing like Kinoya. What I love about the BSR is that one bite, and you're literally in heaven. It's greatness just melts in your mouth, and once you're done with the first piece, you have to grab another just to make sure, "Did that really happen, or did I just imagine that??" And yes, it did happen. It was literally an orgasm in your mouth. My boyfriend of the time loved Albacore, and so he'd always get the Albacore Roll. I've been in love with the Albacore sashimi, and recently I've fallen in love with Sake Sashimi, and I long to try it at Kinoya. The prices are a little bit on the pricey side, but doable. You can dress up fancy if you want; We went here for our Valentine's Day lunch, and dressed up. For groups, people usually bring their families and babies; With babies it kind of gets loud with their crying, but most of the time it's a decent level of sound. I wouldn't recommend groups, since it is a small venue, But I do highly recommend you come try the place out. And now looking at the Yelp page, makes me really sad, because now I know I won't find a great sushi place to replace Kinoya, knowing that I gave it 5 stars, and overall it has 4.5 out of 5 stars. *This was my first review, and I had to use it on my favorite restaurant I miss so much. I'm a bit surprised at how many people have wrote reviews here and offered such positive reviews. When looking at the sushi roll selection, the descriptions were all pretty much the same: CA roll filling or tempura something... Since there was a lot of tempura and baked this and that, I can't comment on the quality of it since I didn't order any of that. Boyfriend and I chose maki, cut rolls. We like yellow tail, tuna, and salmon. So naturally we order cut rolls of those fishies. Tuna and salmon cut rolls were on the thinner side. Barely a layer of sushi rice. A relatively smaller piece of fish in the middle. I do like that the nori smelled of seaweed. (As a kid, I loved the smell of nori before snacking on each sheet. Haha not the healthiest, but something I definitely did.) Yellow tail cut roll was so weird... Yellow tail was mashed with a considerable amount of green onion. Again a thin layer of sushi encompassed the yellow tail mash and lastly nori held it together. ... YELLOW TAIL MASH. Which actually translated to green onion mush since the green onion was overwhelming the fish. The manager came over and asked how we enjoyed our food. We honestly, and ever so diplomatically, explained the confusion and how we wanted a simple yellow tail cut roll... She obliged and offered a substitute on the house. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! If it wasn't for her concern and her willingness to make her patrons happy, I would've given this place 1 star. So there you go. I found my new favorite sushi restaurant! Tucked away in a little strip mall down the street from the college. We were looking into a new sushi spot because our other one was getting a bit expensive. And thanks to yelp I found this one. It had the highest rating in the area. Walking in your greeted by pretty much the whole restaurant. Which I love. The waitresses are super friendly and are always smiling. The food is remarkable. Check the sign out front to see the daily specials. I tried the special of the day, it was called the stewie roll. It had baby lobster, cashews, asparigus, all on top of a california roll. It was delicious. The other rolls we ordered were fresh and tastey. Even the spicey tuna roll. And I'm not a fan of spicey tuna. So like I said earlier I found my new favorite sushi spot. And hope to see you there. read more

TM suggested Awesome Sushi in Long Beach for dinner, but since it only got 3 1/2 stars AND we missed Awesome Hour, there was no way I was going to go there and get high-priced mediocre sushi, when I could get better sushi for regular price. Then came Sushi Kinoya, which was easy since it was one review right above Awesome in my Yelp search under "sushi" near "long beach." It's in a nondescript plaza next to Chaotic Tacos or something like that near the corner of Bellflower and Stearns, south of the 405. They don't take reservations, even though in the Yelp business description, it says "yes." But at 8:30 on a Thursday night, even though it was full, there were still a couple of tables available. I can't see more than 30 or 40 people fitting in that room, which included a sushi counter. The place is decorated in some sustainable decor with twigs/branches and just some simple-looking furniture. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of nigiri: salmon, hamachi, pepper-seared baby tuna, albacore, salmon roe, tamago. Everything was really, really tasty, except maybe just a very small tad too much ponzu on the albacore. Then we also got a couple of rolls, the Albacore Delight (seared albacore over California roll) and the Dynamite roll (baked seafood over spicy tuna). Both were tasty and reasonably priced. The check came out to $78 dollars and that included a beer, and I only had that because the ex told me I needed to "get on it" and start dating because I was old. Yes. Thanks. What I didn't like was the fact that they charged for hot green tea. It was only $1, but still, really? Service was good though and the sushi all came out pretty fast. Portions were a good size and I wish I found this place sooner when I used to drive past there all the time on my way to dragonboating. A real sanctuary from the busy shopping mall and crowded parking lot outside. Our favorite orders here include: * Shrimp Killer Roll: tempura shrimp on the inside and sweet shrimp on the outside! Yum! * Las Vegas Roll: 4 different kinds of fish, crab, avocado, and cream cheese in a tempura roll. All the best things! * Crazy Crab Roll: crabmeat salad and avocado in a roll that is deep fried! Most sushi restaurants are usually the same to me, either I like it or I don't; If I like it, that means I was satisfied and the sushi + rolls tasted good, but if I don't like it, it means that it tastes like cr*p and it isn't fresh. My favorite would have to be the Snow Crab Hand Roll and the Salmon Mango Roll, since the creation and ingredients in these two items are unique in itself since it's something they made up here. First of all, the pictures that my fellow Yelpers posted were my decision making factor!! Everything tasted as great as it looked!!! It is located in an unsuspecting strip mall, and yes, parking could be a bummer, who cares!! It is worth any hassle!! As soon as you open the door and barely have one foot in the door, you receive pleasant greetings from every direction. There is nothing intimidating here! The menu was super easy if that makes sense, they had a lot of options, but not so many that you were in a tail spin of what you wanted. They had their chalk board of Kinoya Specials, I asked the waitress what she recommended her only question to me was "Do you like spicy" Yes I do, "No really spicy" sure so we tried the Spicy Tuna with Jalapeno sauce. I love when it is so spicy my nose runs!!! The Sashimi.... ooohhh the Sashimi. PERFECT! I could eat only that, but it is fun to taste the other flavors as well, so we also went with the safety of California Rolls and Shrimp Tempura Rolls. Once again, Sushi Kinoya, you made my day very joyous =). I sat at the sushi bar, perused the menu, & after 3x of flipping the pages, I couldn't find the $6.95 Los Altos Hand Roll in fine print. So I shyly asked Martin, the sushi chef, if they happened to have it, & he excitingly said yes & quickly created one their signature dishes (which btw the name was posted in its neon inscription on their "blackboard"). How should I explain this...absolutely everything I bit into this Los Altos Hand Roll was at the very tip to perfection: the minced, melty spicy tuna; crisp crab pieces; the delicately delicious blend and chops of the red onions & scallions; wow...even the nori wrap was utmost easy to chomp! The funny part for me is that it's one of the very few sushis that I don't need to use soy sauce--just a bit of wasabi for that spicy kick, so that's telling something ;). For the very friendly, hospitable service, worthy value, & for the welcoming & relaxing decor--despite that pretty high pricing--I'm officially becoming a loyal customer to Sushi Kinoya. read more

Of course their selection is not as much if you just do the special rather than select rolls. I would advise to sushi lovers not to get the fried options. I don't know if it's just me but fried sushi rolls just ruin the quality of the good fresh sushi taste in my opinion. Next time I come back I'll make sure to be more wary of that. This place is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! From the outside, you think it looks like some fast food Japanese restaurant. But once you step inside, it's really nicely decorated. Normally the only raw fish I eat is Tuna, but today I ordered a lunch special which came with 5 pieces of sushi (Tuna, white fish, albacore, salmon, shrimp) and chicken teriyaki roll for $9.95. The sushi arrived first, nicely presented on the plate. The first piece I ate was salmon. It literally just melted in my mouth! The rest of the sushi were just as fresh. This is by far the BEST sushi I've ever had in a very long time! The chicken teriyaki roll was part roll with the extra chicken teriyaki placed next to the roll on a piece of green leaf. I'm a sucker for mango on sushi, and they have a great Mango Salmon roll. If sushi isn't your thing, they offer other menu items too, including udon. The Yummy Crunchy is a standout: diced tomato, onions, and tuna in house dressing on a fried wonton skin. It's simple but delicious. Keep an eye out for daily specials. We had ankimo wrapped in shiso leaf and salmon sashimi, which was great. The ankimo paired well with the the buttery salmon, and the verdant shiso flavor cut through the richness to balance it all out. When in doubt, Sushi Kinoya is always a great option. read more

First off, this is probably the most romantic of all sushi places. You've got dark yet decent lighting, soft music and the overall noise level is not loud. The servers are very attentive and the menu is filled with unique and creative items. My favorite was the Spare Rib Steak Roll. I believe it came with 8 pieces and even had spare ribs on the side! Totally worth the $12 (it may have been $14, can't seem to remember). I could have eaten this as an actual entree. The flavor was amazing... Tender pieces of sweet spare rib meat paired with crunchy cucumber slices, all rolled into sushi rice drizzled with sweet sauce. TO DIE FOR! I can't even really remember what else I ordered there because this was so yummy. I think I just got the teriyaki chicken which wasn't anything too special, but wasn't bad either. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because while this is a great date place, the seating space between tables is a little too close for my comfort. I mean, if I really wanted to, I could hear the conversation at the table next me. Probably uncomfortable for first dates... Luckily I was here with my boyfriend and we're way past that. Wow, wow, wow! Talk about a Yelp APP paying off! We had no idea where we were going or what we would find. What we found was a small, super friendly sushi joint with superior service and amazing food. The place was full, but there were a few seats at the sushi bar. We must have stuck out like a sore thumb because the sushi chefs seem to know every customer by name. Upon finding out we were just in for the weekend, the sushi chef whipped up a couple extra plates just as a welcome gift. Loooved the hamachi w/jalapeno! The miso soup to start was perfect and the pan fried dumplings were a nice break between rolls. I could have kept going on a couple more rolls, but my partner was too full. It's a small place so I can see how it can get really crowded and busy at night. However, I really liked the cute paper crane decorations they had hanging from the ceiling! For my main roll I ordered the lobster popcorn roll! It was basically a California roll with fried popcorn lobster pieces on top. It was a really unique combination and something I wouldn't have thought of before. My date ordered a lunch special, which included a spicy tuna roll. I really liked it as it was more seasoned than most other sushi places I tried! The serving sizes were a bit small so we ended up ordering the baked lobster roll with the white fish to fill us up! I'm a huge fan of this place! My mom's also a huge fan of this place and that's saying something! Small place in a very busy plaza. The interior is nice, calming. Think: Traditional Japanese w/ a thousand paper cranes floating overhead. Also, they do not play loud music like other restaurants do. A very peaceful place to go on a date or enjoy a meal. The service IS ON POINT. Check up on you at appropriate times, wait is never long, the food comes out quickly, waters are refilled. Probably the best service I have ever received in general. The sushi here is amazing! I have had the baked salmon roll, salmon special (Salmon on salmon!), mango salmon, the white tuna nigiri and the unagi nigiri + more that I cannot remember from previous meals. The nigiri is worth every penny! Nice cuts of fish, perfect amount of rice, melt in your mouth fish. The salmon special is perfect for anyone that loves salmon as much as I do. Although it is pricey for a normal meal, I would definitely recommend this location for a nice meal, a treat, or a special occasion. read more

I got a case of the Monday's along with a huge craving for Hamachi Kama (Yellowtail Collar). Although I had never dined here before, I relied solely on my fellow yelpers to guide me.... to lead me.....to the light. And, they did not disappoint. Thank you to all those who dared to go before me and make trail. Thank you. I called in to find out if it was on the menu first. I placed my to-go order and got a call back a few minutes later telling me that they are all out of Hamachi Kama. So, I chose a few sushi: the $8.95 two roll special - spicy tuna roll and a salmon roll. I also ordered nigiri sushi: ikura and hamachi along with an order of beef teriyaki bowl for my co-worker. All together amounting to less than $29. Turns out the hamachi nigiri - thick buttery, smooth and fresh. Those two pieces were a rich heavenly blanket of the oily fish. I could not get enough of it. The ikura nigiri (although shaped more round and shallow than I am used to) was still fresh and had that little snap when biting into the salty ikura. Delicious. Then, the rolls were still fresh and tasty. When I go back, I will dine in and stick with the nigiri sushi. They have fresh, tasty food and they didnt skimp on the hamachi. This is our regular go to sushi place in LB now, and I feel like I know the menu too well. -The chef said he would make us a chefs choice roll, and it was amazing melt in your mouth goodness as well as creative. Dear hubby and I were impressed. We don't know what it was called, but anyway it was delightful! It's more expensive, but SO creamy and worth it. Flavors were perfect. -The yellow collar has a surprisingly good amount of meat on it and is also delicious. I normally don't go for cooked fish at sushi restaurants, but this was worth it. -Salmon scallop roll was okay, a little bland. -My husband loves the blue crab sushi. I'm so so not a huge crab fan. -The crunchy albacore, as someone else mentioned, was delicious! The crunchy onions are delicate, and the albacore is melt in your mouth good. Awesome pairing. This sushi spot is amazing. Ordered for dinner and only took 30 minutes, they sent me a text saying my order was ready for pick up. It was hot still upon arrival.
