My favorite was the Crispy onion albacore, that was hands down delicious! So, why am i giving Kinoya 4 stars? The Uni, Uni (Sea Urchin) is my VERY favorite thing to eat in a sushi bar. But, theirs wasn't fresh... i could tell because it was WAY too soft and it didn't taste like the sea. I could tell because i absolutely LOVE Uni. Small and hip restaurant in an unassuming shopping plaza. After a failed attempt at Sushi Studio, we made our way a few miles down and found Sushi Kinoya. I was really glad we stumbled upon this place because it didn't look as chaotic as Sushi Studio and the ambiance just seemed a lot more mellow and modern. So how was the sushi, you ask? It was great! We ordered the scallop roll, baby lobster and white fish roll and the famous crunch spicy tuna roll. The scallop roll was definitely one of the better scallop rolls I've tasted. DON'T order chicken teriyaki. Dry baked chicken breast smothered with sauce just before serving. Chicken color was stark white, looked and tasted like freezer burned meat. My Sushi Kinoya experience was very pleasant. It doesn't have a big sign or a big space for that matter. It's part of a strip mall and parking is limited. But when I walked in this place, I was greeted with smiles. I guess we were lucky it wasn't crowded. The place is clean and cozy. We sat at the bar and befriended the chef (Martin). Considering it was our first time there, we asked a lot of questions and Martin explained them all well. He even told us which ones are popularly ordered. While we were deciding, he gave us Monk fish liver roll (which I would've never thought of ordering). It was surprisingly good! We ordered Dragon Roll, Albacore (nice and smooth), and Popcorn Lobster. Loved them all! And since it was my birthday, for our final order we asked the chef to make something for us (his choice). He made the Salmon Special, and let me tell ya... I would go back just for that. I think their food was reasonably priced and made just right (not too big, not too small). Found this place on Yelp, small cute place in Long Beach. I had a roll with jalapenos in it, it was a bit spicy with a spicy sauce. It was good. The crispy rice was recommended by our waitress and it was spicy tuna on top of crispy rice and a slice of jalapeno. It was good. The yellowtail collar was good as well. Incredible sushi. Fresh and large pieces with minimal but deliciously tasty rice portions. Came for my Sister's birthday and I was very impressed. We arrived around 5:30 and beat the rush, the rolls came out very quick. Highly recommend the rock n roll and any eel rolls. also must get the scallops if you're even slightly interested in shellfish. Most places don't do scallops well but this place had it figured out. Also the owner was very good about checking in on our table and thanked us for coming, but she is very good to her regulars as I noticed her greeting and welcoming them in by name. Because they Albacore is so good - I definitely recommend the Crunchy Onion Albacore. It's seared albacore sashimi covered in ponzu sauce then topped with this thin fried onions. Pure heaven on a plate. Also recommend the Hot Night - and if they are in a good mood, they'll make the Hot Night with Calamari instead of tempura shrimp. Then you're good to go. The Giant Clam is great - and I always like to finish with tempura ice cream. The sushi chef, Martin, goes to the fish market every day, and when I asked him if he ever saw Abalone before there, he offered to buy some for me! What a guy! Now I've got fresh Abalone from the fish market at wholesale prices. I could go on and on and on. Everybody who loves sushi and lives in Long Beach should give it a go. The decor -- there isn't much decor -- it looks boring. Period. They need to spruce it up a bit, maybe add some Japanese music? The sushi chefs seemed like they were doing their job--making sushi-- however, they didn't seem to be chatting it up or doing sake bombs with customers or anything like that. It almost seemed like a library. When it comes to ambience, I prefer Aki (on 7th Street) or Kinokowa or Mahe's, with the highest points to Mahe's. Always a great crowd at Mahe's. I am going to be the down reviewer for the day. This was not the place to try on my birthday. I wanted to try some place new, and Sushi Kinoya got such glowing YELP reviews that I just had to check it out. BLAH BLAH BLAH So we arrive, and the place is busy. This is the only reason I did not give it one star. I am trying to excuse everything on the fact that they had a lot of customers to deal with. We waited by the door for awhile before we were asked if we wanted to sit at the bar. My friend and I were both hungry and didn't care, so we agreed. We walked to the bar area, and there is a waitress standing in front of one of the chairs waiting and fiddling with some to-go containers. We stand there for a couple of minutes. When she realizes that we wanted to sit, she apologizes and moves out of the way. However, our particular spot ended up being the departure point for everyone's orders -- to-go and otherwise. This wasn't the biggest deal, but we constantly had people reaching over our heads to pass along containers. We sat there for what had to be over five minutes with quizzical looks on our faces, trying to figure out how to order. Did we just ask for what we wanted? Did we order specials? Did we not get a menu, because ordering is different at the bar??? We're looking around, trying to find someone to help us. The sushi chef in front of us is busy working and not paying any heed. My friend says, "maybe we just wait until he's finished with what he's doing and then he'll help us..." WHATEVER!!! I ended up asking a passing waitress about menus, and we finally got those. We ordered sushi, sashimi, a seafood salad, edamame, and a dragon roll. IT TOOK US FORTY MINUTES TO GET FOOD!!!! Ok, so we got the edamame pretty quickly, but everything else? ???? I have never waited so long for sushi ever. And we were sitting at the bar. Okay, I understand that they were busy, but that was ridiculous. They couldn't even get us a seafood salad within forty minutes. A seafood salad!!! On that topic, to our chagrin, it was on a bed of iceburg lettuce, and not at all what we were expected, although the flavor itself wasn't bad. The dragon roll was next. That was good, but it was a standard roll like you would get anywhere. There was, like other reviewers have stated, less rice, but I didn't find anything particularly fantastic about it. I ordered the yellowtail with jalapeno. I found the fish to be mediocre and the flavor lacking. Maybe I'm used to the one at I Luv Sushi (although their sushi overall isn't always the best, I love this particular dish). Furthermore, the jalapenos had NO SEEDS on them. SO, they had NO HEAT or flavor. What was the point of having peppers on the fish if they're not even hot??? Total disappointment. The rest of the sushi was alright, but nothing to write home about. Overall, this was a sad experience, and I don't see myself ever returning if another choice is available. read more

Its refreshing and light. Salmon wrapped ankimo_ the salmon was fresh and the combo of the two fish complimented each other very well. Baked eel roll_eel was cooked and marinated just right. Sauce was not overwhelming. Green tea fried ice cream_ great way to end the dinner. On Mondays and Tuesdays, it's half off beer and sake. The place is quite small with about eleven tables and a sushi bar with about seven or eight seats, but it was very busy. It looks like a hole on the wall from the outside... but aren't those usually the best places, anyway? They advertise their special rolls everywhere. The fresh fish slices on my sushi were quite thin which is understandable based on what they charge. Bento box was filled with fresh spinach salad, rice, fruit and 4 pieces of California rolls.
