Update Review after 4 YEARS! Quick 'n Easy, Fast 'n Breezy Review! Arigatou gozaimasu :) Mother wanted to grab Japanese lunch nearby and she took me to...*drum roll* Sushi Masa. I begrudgingly agreed mainly cause she drove haha. We arrived around 1:30PM and was seated quickly. There seemed to be one, maybe two waitress on duty at the time? We looked at the Lunch Menu and Happy Hour Menu, which is applicable during lunch and 5-630PM M-Th. We ordered the: Crunchy California Roll (8pcs $6), Beef Teriyaki & Cali roll combo (~$9), and Nabekyaki Udon ($10). The Bento Combos came with miso soup, salad, and rice. The Udon was accompanied by salad only. The Crunchy California roll-- BEST entree, surprisingly! The roll was piping hot and super crunchy. The avocado and imitation crab were definitely fresh and melted inside your mouth. The bento combo and udon were mediocre average (just as I remembered so...). Salted heavily, the beef left more to be desired, but the udon shrimp came in a mega giant size, score! The hot tea is still divine, and our waitress was hard to flag down but very friendly. She was a younger-aged Japanese female and definitely not the old tyrannical witches that served us before. Interior decor was the same-- kawaii, old-time Japanese Edo vibe. A big thanks go to sushi guru Ken K. for his recommendation of Sushi Masa. I truly enjoyed my dinner today at Sushi Masa. Located in a strip mall like so many South Bay sushi establishments, Sushi Masa had several characteristics that made it stand out for me. First, I was delighted with the quality of the nigiri here. In total, I had 7 orders (or 14 pieces) and I found every one to be fresh, tasty, and several to be eye-openingly good (hirame, hotate, and buttery hamachi). Second, the vibe is casual. As I sat solo at the sushi bar, the chef politely asked me what I felt like, asked me a few questions, and made suggestions. Never once did I feel intimidated or overwhelmed. I simply asked him what was fresh today and since I liked everything he mentioned, I had one order of each. Though he was busy preparing many dishes for the table clientele, I never felt neglected. To be honest, when you go to many sushi places where chefs have developed relationships with older clients, you feel like the new kid on the block. It's hard to break in. I didn't feel that way here. Sushi Masa and fellow South Bay Sushi on the Run (in Los Gatos) are probably close in quality, but the sushi chef here was much more approachable and friendlier. As someone that barely knows the names of all the nigiri types, (but still likes high quality selection), the casual atmosphere and open nature is a good match. I can see myself returning, learning more, and becoming even more comfortable....I've been told that's what the goal should be when you interact with a sushi chef. Third, despite what I considered to be my generous order, the prices were very reasonable. I never asked about price and simply agreed to suggestions the chef had that I thought I might like. The fact I wasn't merely given the priciest cuts or the one in bulk garnered my trust. I will feel more comfortable letting him choose my sushi in the future because I had no complaints about any of the choices today. Finally, the location is perfect. Minutes from work, on late nights, I think Sushi Masa will be the place I turn to. Their selection is quite good (though they did run out of toro as I arrived) and I loved how generous the slices were. Of note, sitting at the bar, I was offered tea, but no miso soup or other appetizers. Many clientele like to order the Masa special, which is a very popular combination of a sushi boat, teriyaki, and more. The chef admitted people liked it cause it was a bargain. BTW Sushi Masa accepts American Express and I can't really express how happy that makes me. As the end of the year approaches, I have some spending benchmarks to reach (to reach Amex Elite). With Sushi Masa, I now have a top notch sushi place where I can still fulfill that goal (unlike Sushi Tomi, Sushi Sam's or Sushi on the Run). Thumbs up! Thanks to Alice Y for this find! 22 year old restaurant Sushi Masa is in one of those typical "non descript suburban strip malls" just a few minutes off the 85 on Camden Ave. The restaurant name lettering design may be a visual turnoff especially if you are not a fan of the Hong Kong Phooey Chop Suey Kung Fu Fortune Cookie style fonts that you see at Chinese restaurants from the 50s in the USA and what might invoke thoughts of Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywizzle Southern Cal. The inside and the food, however is a different story. The restaurant is dimly lit, and decorated to look like a mix of an old Japanese temple, dive bar, log cabin, and a bit old style Benihana-esque. What was amusing was that the sushi counter section that seats 10, was exactly adjacent to the restaurant's alcohol bar, and adjoined! Owner and sushi chef Masa-san hails from Kobe, Japan (Nobu K please take note!) and looks more like an older rock and roll fellow. But make no mistake, this guy is serious about his food and very down to earth. While it seems he was not classically trained in Japan (reflected also in his nigiri crafting, which isn't bad, but it isn't the gourmet authentic style some might be looking for), he comes from a family line of chefs. Masa-san asked me what I wanted, so I took a chance, and said to him "omakase, shimasu". To which he nodded, and then he asked me "Nihonjin desu-ka?" and I immediately replied "No, but I eat like one" in English ;-) I suppose only a few of you will find this amusing. So what followed was a series of 1 piece nigiri's, and some cooked mini dishes at the end. Appetizer: small sunomono of a little pickled cabbage with a small piece of shimesaba. Hit the spot, nice freebie. chu toro - A nice meaty and smooth piece. Surprisingly decent for this part of town. ebi - Uh, cooked prawn? But wow this was freshly cooked or boiled but it was not cold or hot. Could this be what true Japanese kurama ebi freshness tastes like? Very impressive...it wasn't overcooked either. ika - Masa-san made several cross cuts. It had the exact texture like aori ika. I inquired further and he told me it was...."Kenzaki" ika (or something like that. uni - I checked out the container in his case. Santa Barbara uni for sure but the lobes were solid and clean. It must have been high grade stuff. But instead of serving it as gunkan sushi, he put it on a piece of shari, and the whole thing on a wrapper like a freakin SEE'S CANDY! I wasn't sure what to do with it, so I ate the thing like a See's Candy and left the wrapper behind. Masa-san then said "oh you can eat that!" I asked "so it's made of nori??" and he said "yeah". Holy cow! I overheard the sous chef talk to the waitress in Japanese, with the word "see's candy" in English. Obviously talking about my odd maneouver... Well the wrapper didn't taste like paper, thank gawd. See picture. tako - normally not a fan, but I'm so amazed at the taste and texture. The way he cut it (thin). It actually tasted REALLY good! As good as Ino Sushi's. A light brush of the sweet sauce (not very heavy) made this memorable scallops - Hokkaido Hotate. No wonder everyone moans with pleasure. unagi - thick meaty piece. Better than the cheap supermarket stuff I've had at home. ikura temaki - Masa san goes to the back where his little refrigerator was. Takes out a container and I see the ikura in a dark sauce. I smiled so big you wouldn't believe. Ikura no shoyu zuke! Marinated in soy sauce and sake. This man was a genius and knew to give me the hidden stuff. Marination was decent, a great effort. I really appreciated that. Hamachi - fatty belly cut. Farmed kind, above average. mirugai - It was a cut off the tip or the top, couldn't tell. Very soft and fresh piece. I got another piece later, but it was simliar to torigai in texture but unicolored. Didn't ask though. himo-kyu uramaki - OMG. Masa-san made me a Jiveanese Ass Fusion roll! A nice long piece of mirugai himo, cucumber, those small Japanese wild carrot thingy's, shiso, and made an INSIDE OUT (uramaki) roll, a few squeezes of Sriracha (Rocket Sauce), and a little of the sweet unagi sauce. Holy cow.... whacky, creative, it was actually good! saba - as one yelper mentioned, like oizisushi. HUGE piece of saba, rectangularish cut, molded to look like a roof over the rectangular shari. Piece of kelp on top. Pseudo Battera, but it was nice (not the best construction). tako sunomono - very artfully plated in a square white bowl. The tako was marinated, could not tell in what but it was soft. There were other greens in it. ni-gyu suji - for lack of better description. Virtually identical to Sushi Sam's version of Wagyu Suji (beef sinews with meat and tendons, stewed to perfection). Amazing stuff, especially the tendons that tasted like fat. I hate to give one star because the food is so good, but one of the waitresses was super rude. My wife and went there for dinner, and my wife asked for two waters. The waitress (her name was yani) came back with one water. My wife asked very politely if she could bring another water. The waitress rolled her eyes, came back with the water and just threw it down on the table. I then told another waiter what happened and that I want a new waitress. The new waitress was very polite and did a great job. On the way out we got vibes from the staff. I asked one of the waiters who was staring at me "what are looking at"? He just looked down and said nothings. We'll probably wont be going back there for awhile as it was so awkward the entire dinner. read more

Really excellent sushi every time. Here is a true artist behind the sushi bar. The rice is correct and the fish flavorful, excellent and fresh. True respect is paid to the sushi. Heaven in your mouth. Go here for sushi, and only if you need to, order from the menu. The other selections of menu items are more of a 2.5 star. Nothing special, nothing awful. Service is average. Good for kids. Going to upgrade my rating because I went for lunch and the service was excellent, and I found a couple of menu items that were superb. But tonight was disappointing and i am still so (insert cuss words here) pissed off. My friend and I came in to eat at this place tonight. When we got in, two of the ladies that worked there walked passed us and didn't even acknowledge us. After standing there for at least 10 minutes, my friend jokingly even asked me..SHOULD WE SEAT OURSELVES??? we've never been treated so rudely. The workers could have just said HELLO and PLEASE WAIT a moment. instead..I had to hunt one down who accidentally made eye contact with me, and she said 'please wait' and rushed off clearing dishes. FIRST OF ALL, those dishes will always be there, its always more important to seat a customer first, 2nd of all, I believe we were treated so poorly because we look young (recent college grads). and 3rd of all, they didnt even smile at us. We're paying customers! SO we finally get seated. (I FIND OUT LATER theres a whole separate paper menu with all the special sushis that we weren't even offered) we only got the main menu. They don't have much selection in rolls. And we rushed to pick our rolls in case they came over for a second, we knew we would never get them over here again to take our orders if we weren't ready. We waited and we waited, a old couple was seated behind us, and right when a waitress came to our section, she was going towards THEM and not us. We had our menus closed, we were waiting patiently, but no. NO SERVICE. we finally got so mad we walked out and changed sushi restaurants. I feel so discriminated against tonight. Apparently they only give good service to families or Middle age Caucasians. If i could give this place NO STARS, I would. I've never been so insulted in my life. I think I have found my new go-to sushi restaurant in South Bay. I was happy with their nigiri. The sushi rice was well prepared and perfectly seasoned. Judging by table service alone, I would rank Sushi Masa in the same tier as Akane in Los Altos, Yuzu in San Mateo and the former Kitsho in Cupertino before the chef retried. The selection and quality of fish even for a quiet Sunday lunch was decent. This is a restaurant I have bookmarked to return for a sushi bar omakase meal. Our waitress was very helpful and gave good recommendations. Make sure you ask for their white board special. They have hon maguro (blue fin tuna) in stock that day. I was offered a cut between akame (lean) and chutoro. It was rich in flavors yet has a subtle buttery texture. The chef made a pair of perfectly shaped amaebi nigiri. The sweet shrimp blanked the bite size sushi rice at an almost exact 90 degree angle. It was beautiful to look at and wonderful in taste. Their chirashi is probably the best in the area for a less than $20 bowl. Those who fancy varieties will be happy to find over 10 different kinds of fish and a few pickled things. Service was great. Food was great. The only thing I could complain about is the wait. There were only a handful of patrons there but still waited over an hour for food. The chef really took his time to prepare the sushi and the quality shown. However, I suspect some less patient hungry customers might not be too happy. read more

Disclaimer: I am not much of a sushi or seafood eater. Still, though, I was excited to visit Sushi Masa because I'd heard it was one of the few places around that serves Okonomiyaki. It's served for lunch as a main course and for dinner as an appetizer. The Okonomiyaki did not disappoint. It was enough to satisfy an Okonomiyaki craving, but I prefer the Okonomiyaki from Genki Ramen in the city by far. Sushi Masa's could have used more egg, in my opinion. It fell apart a little too easily. We all had tasty little salads and bowls of miso soup before our entrees arrived. I tried the Shrimp Sushi and thought it was good. Just good, not great. A little too sour for me (there's vinegar in the rice in sushi - who knew?). The size of the rolls resulted in the one-giant-bite-or-two-small-bites dilemma. I tried both and wasn't happy with either. One bite was good for mixing all the flavors properly, but I could barely breathe while chewing such a huge portion and two bites unevenly distributed the ingredients. Sad times. My three dinner-mates all seemed to really enjoy their meals. At my insistence, our table of four tried the tempura ice cream, which was basically a hard chunk of green tea ice cream coated in a thin layer of sponge cake, fried, and then cut into four pieces (see my photo). It, too, was just okay. I think I would've preferred just a scoop of green tea ice cream, but it was worth a try. Anyway, Sushi Masa fulfilled a craving and I would go back for the Okonomiyaki if I couldn't make it all the way up to the city. Would have never noticed this place if my friend didn't point it out. I have been going to the gym across the street for years but only recently discovered this place. Thank god I did because this place is pretty solid. Had sashimi, shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki and pickle appetizer. Typical run of the mill order, right? But there's still so many ways to mess up the basics. I recommend this place though. One, the food is good. Second, the people here are nice (which counts for a lot). I loved how they served lobster tails with their dinners, my only complaint that the lobster tails were too small. This was a teenage favorite for the following reasons: 1) Fried Green Tea Ice Cream (where I first learned about fried ice cream) 2) Obento lunch sets 3) Japanese Themed Decor Admittedly, I haven't been back for several years, since I disappeared for college, so I didn't hesitate to take the chance to stop by when I saw the opportunity mostly for the nostalgia. I came here on a weekday for lunch and sushi masa and the atmosphere was casual without being too packed. There appears to be some additional special seating arrangements (kneeling or faux-kneeling) in the back, but I've always just sat in the regular tables. To the food: 1) Green tea. Complimentary. I really prefer japanese green tea to chinese red tea. 2) I ordered the obento set that contained: chicken, sashimi (3 raw tuna slices), and tempura, and salad. I was surprised that the salad dressing didn't taste it was sesame based. Went for the sashimi since I didn't feel like going for california rolls and felt like cutting carbs. I liked how the slices of sashimi had sliced-in ridges on the meat. It was pretty cool to see the meat slightly fan out when I picked up the meet with my chopsticks. For tempura, I mostly care about the shrimp and onion, and dutifully satisfied. Chicken Teriyaki. Not dry at all. 3) Fried Green Tea Ice Cream: They brought the ice cream sliced already. The temperature of the breading/cake (pound cake) around the ice cream wasn't terribly hot as I expected. I'm presuming the ice cream just cooled down the breading very quickly. I think the anticipation of eating this dish was more exciting than actually eating this dish. Maybe I just prefer ice cream over a baked item (pizooki, breaded pudding with icecream). I think with fried items (think anything fried you would buy at a carnival), the novelty factor comes from breaking apart the skin and eating the filling instead of having the fried good sliced already. Summary: I think the food is a win if you're going for a bento lunch for ~$13. Location: This is located in in a shopping center. It wasn't terribly active crowded when I came in on a weekday, so parking shouldn't be a worry. read more

My neighbors were all raving about Sushi Masa during a zoom happy hour so we decided to give it a try even though it was a bit of a drive from our normal take out during the pandemic. So glad we did and will definitely do so again. There was something for the whole family, even those who are not traditionally sushi fans, and everything was packed with care and traveled very well (which has not always been our experience with other sushi restaurants). All of the sushi and sashimi we ordered was fresh and bright. The rolls were creative, tasty and well assembled. Grandma loved the chicken teriyaki dinner (and she is very picky about her chicken) and my daughter enjoyed the baked lobster appetizer and pork katsu which is perfect for kids who have less adventurous tastes. When we did our take out order, they were running a special on cold sake. We weren't sure what to get, but they helped my husband pick something out after asking about our tastes and preferences and we really enjoyed it. read more

I'm a bit surprised by the 4-star overall rating here. First, the servers are really nice - that's definitely a plus. But I usually find Japanese restaurants to have great service. More importantly, the sashimi quality is pretty sub-par. Did not taste fresh, some of the sashimi seemed discolored and tasted bland like it was frozen. I don't live in the area so maybe this place is among the better local options. But I have definitely had better sushi/sashimi in SF. It is also really quiet inside which is nice, but almost too quiet. You can hear everyone's conversation around you. Never ever again. Second time here - the first with my ex and our kids. Service was slow then, but it was busy and the sushi was decent. This time I was by myself and it was at least 5 minutes before anyone said 'hello' at the check-in podium (it wasn't that crowded). I should have left. I suck. I waited over 45 minutes for a simple collection of nigiri sushi. The family of five near me, seated at the same time, had all their entrees well before I did. I didn't know who was to blame...my server was very apologetic on the few times she appeared. She said they were very busy, but there we no other occupied tables on my side of the restaurant. Do they deserve only 2 stars? Probably not, but I'm still shocked. The breadth of the menu is great, there is an extensive saki menu, the decor and the mood are great, the service is very friendly (if it happens!), and the sushi is above average for a pricey place with attention ambiance. The fresh salmon nigiri was really great and generous, the hamachi was small and average. The spicy tuna roll was average, and the hotate nigiri was fantastic, though I got mine a little too spicy to enjoy the hotate. read more

We entered Sushi Masa with two sweaty kids after an afternoon at The Jungle next door. (Sweaty because it's a kids' play place, not because it's an actual jungle.) We sat at a traditional tatami mat table where you sit with your legs suspended over a large hole in the floor. With concern in her voice my daughter asked, "Does the hole ever end?" Clearly when you're five and your legs don't touch the bottom it's an endless abyss. The kids shared miso soup and pork gyoza, both fine. The husband had a combo with beef teriyaki that was stew-like. He said it was not great. My California Roll and Mango Tango sushi rolls were serviceable as was the tempura. Nothing to write home about but what I expected. We couldn't resist treating the kids - the kids, not us, the kids! - to the interesting-sounding tempura ice-cream. Unfortunately we had to wait 20 minutes for it. The green tea ice-cream itself was bland with no noticeable tea flavor. I wish there were other ice-cream flavors offered. The tempura part was more bready than fried-tasting and quite unique. The kids ate their ice-cream first and then ate the leftover tempura that had fallen off. Overall the food was fine but the meal took 1 ¾ hours which was unexpected since we were the first diners there at about 5:15. There were just a lot of long waits between courses. read more

Ordered stir fried udon which came with a ton of soup at the bottom, which isn't what I consider stir fry. Its almost like boiled udon soup with soy source added. Eel roll is very basic, a little eel wrapped in seaweed and rice. Safeway deli sushi quality. I give 2 stars for the good service only. read more

I really like the rolls in this place. They always have special rolls written on the chalkboard menu when you walk in that are super creative. I had a sake (salmon) and tuna spicy roll (Warrior roll) - it was perfectly spicy and they did not skimp on the salmon and tuna. Next time i want to try the Ninja Roll, which the flambe with a torch before serving...looked interesting. They have all the other basic Japanese fare and the cool Japanese soda with the ball that drops in it. My friend order the grilled swordfish and it wasn't anything special. Seemed a bit pricey for the meal which came with fish, rice, miso soup and salad at $21.95 but it was cooked well and was super fresh. While the food is good, the service is always slow and it is pricey. However, I will continue to go back because they have good rolls, the kids are happy there and its close to the house. read more

It is a white resturant that looks like a small castle. =) The ambiance inside is definitely very nice. I felt like I was in Japan even though I have never been there..lol. There was a lot of nice Japanese pots, and artwork hanging on the walls. I noticed Sushi Masa has the traditional kneeling tables. I wanted to sit there, but someone in my party mentioned we would be uncomfortable. We decided to sit at the regular tables. After looking at the menu, I decided to get the Chicken Katsu dish ($11.50), which came with soup, salad, and rice. The salad was very good, the dressing is not the typical miso dressing. The soup came in a unique bowl with a black lid. When my main dish came out, I noticed the portion is very huge. I was excited to try my Chicken Katsu, but unfortunately I was a bit disappointed with my dish. My Chicken Katsu still had the chicken skin on it, so it was pretty fatty to me. I don't like to eat chicken skin, so I had to cut out half the breaded portion just to remove the fatty part...lol. My party decided to share the Japanese pizza, which was really good. It was an appetizer dish that cost $12. The pizza came out at the same time as our regular dishes. There was fish, crab, onions, and other ingredients. =) The service here is definitely really slow. Expect to spend at least 2 hours if you come here. The servers don't really come to your table unless they need to giveyou something. read more

I was craving for a hot bowl of beef udon and we were in the area on that chilly day during fall, so we went to this restaurant located next to CVS and pizza hut on Camden. Husband ordered their specials, he said that their sushi was an OK, he experienced better. I ordered beef udon, and I gotta say that I wish I didn't order that. First the broth tasted more like a combination between water and miso instant pack, then they were so stingy about the beef portion, (for the price that we paid, we expected to have some more beef). Then, it was just downhill from that on. We ordered chicken karage, and they didn't cook them well, so most of the chicken still had some blood inside (blech). We reported to our server, and thank God we didn't need to pay for that. Not going back. read more

We love Sushi Masa all the time. Writing this today because of an extra special event. We ordered takeout dinner for my daughter's birthday for 10 people -- all family - socially distanced - outdoors at our home. The food was perfect! All fresh. All well prepared and very tasty. The warm foods were warm and the cold were cold. We gave them a list with names and they actually marked the names on the boxes so we had an extremely easy time handing out the dinners and sushi and appetizers. Very clean restaurant with generous servings/plates. Had the combination box C (chicken tempura, CA roll, and lobster & veggie tempura)-$20. Also tried the salmon skin roll ($7) and lobster tempura roll ($15). The tempura was cooked perfect. The salmon skin roll was a bit dry for me, and made as a nori roll instead of a temaki roll...so that's also part of why it was a touch dry. The lobster tempura (and roll) were tasty. The wait staff was quick and attentive, so overall a very good experience and I would absolutely repeat it. read more
