This is one of my go to sushi places. I love everything about that place the sushi is definitely high quality the atmosphere is gorgeous and dimly lit and they also do take out! They have a specials list with at least one new thing about every week which I love! Now to talk about the service I would give them 6 stars if I could for service. The servers are always so sweet and amazing and we always leave feeling satisfied and full without feeling like we broke our bank too much. I came back this time with a friend of mine for a birthday celebration dinner Saturday night on the 27th of February and again, was surprised by the friendliness of the staff (which is rare these days), service and the quality of food. We came in and had to wait due to the dinnertime crowd so my friend and I just decided to wait and it worked out because that gave us time to look around the restaurant and appreciate how beautifully decorated this place was and to figure out what to order after looking at both the special and regular menus. We ordered the monkey brain, sweet potato fries, squid karaage, couple of dragon ( Mango and the flaming dragon(?) rolls, Love boat sashimi and fried green tea ice cream which was recommended by many yelpers. That was a LOT of food for the party of two, and had a lot of leftovers, but it was really tasty. We had a great time, the sashimi was fresh and the friendly server was really busy, and yet he and she made sure all of our orders were taken care of and that all food came in order, one after another. My friend wanted to share that it was one of the best overall sushi restaurant experience she'd ever had in the Bay area and I agreed; we will be back. read more

Dear Masa, For future reference, I had high hopes for you. In fact, the only reason why you are receiving 3 instead of 2 stars is because your sushi is pretty good. Not good enough for your overpriced non-recession, non-regular, non-FANTASTIC sushi prices, just good so you get an extra star. Otherwise you are overpriced (hello who charges $19 for a bowl of chirashi with unagi in it. Who even PUTS unagi in chirashi), very rude, and very inattentive. When I walk into a restaurant for whatever reason, I expect that there will be someone at the hostess desk, maybe not immediately, perhaps not even within 5 minutes. HOWEVER, if I stand there and wait for 10 minutes while the chefs at the sushi bar stare and say hi to me and you still don't show up, then there's something wrong. Perhaps you're not doing your job, eh? After waiting for over 10 minutes, a very disgruntled and rude hostess came out and immediately asked me what I wanted. What the heck do you think I want? I either want to be seated or I want to get to go. Finally, she asked me if I was Mark. I was confused; I repeated a few times that I wanted to get to-go, she still kept asking if I was Mark. After an agonizing 5 minutes, she finally realized that I was not Mark, I didn't order in advance and I wanted to order. She hastily threw me a menu and said here. She was about to walk away when I told her I already knew what I wanted to order. She started taking my order, and I asked if they served Spicy Tuna Maki or Negihama maki. Both are extremely simple, very traditional sushi rolls that are available at every sushi place I've been to EVER for around $4.50 - $5.00 a roll. She started typing into the computer, then told me that a Negihama was $7.99 there (it's just yellowtail and scallions) and when I told her that I didn't want it since she didn't even ask if I wanted it or not and i was not about to pay $7.99 for a simple roll when their normal rolls are $10.00 with a lot more 'stuff' in them ... she was annoyed that apparently I "made" her put it in the system when I didn't even want it. Attitude aside, I finally made my order. One chirashi and two rolls for a hefty $38.00+. Really? This is more like meal for one person. That's QUITE pricey. When she finished giving me the bill, she said "25-30 minutes." What? It's sashimi over rice and two simple rolls. 25 minutes? I've ordered $65 of sushi and it came in 10 minutes when the restaurant was half full. This restaurant was barely squeaking at 7:00 PM. After 25 long, and again agonizing minutes where most sushi places offer their patrons a drink or tea without asking (but most of the time always ask) they offered me nothing. I asked about my food and it wasn't ready yet. A few more minutes it was packed and ready for me. They gave me salad and miso soup which is unusual to go and I admit the miso was good, the salad dressing was WEIRD and the sushi was delicious. The futomaki was probably one of the best I've ever had (okay for $12 it better be ... but it was pretty big) and their sashimi was fresh. But still. Wow. To make a bad impression upon a to-go order, you have to be fantastic at it, and they were for sure. read more

Not only has the food diminished in quality but they never have anything on their menus anymore (especially hamachi kama)! However, the main reason for the one star is due to my horrible experience with a waitress (wish I got her name). My mom ordered salmon. They forgot to make it so it came out when everyone else was done with their meal. When it came out, we all began to ate it and upon first taste, we HAD to spit it out. The fish wasn't fresh with an overwhelming fishy taste. My father told the waitress and she asked us if she could taste it! She took her fingers, broke into the fish, and ate it right in front of us. Everyones copying everyone else and lets face it we are spoiled in the bay area with fresh fish so you could probably have a good experience playing eeny meeny miney mo. If this were Nebraska it would be an entirely different story. So what makes Sushi Masa stand out? Friendly sushi chefs, old lady waitresses that will flirt with you (okay...that I flirt with), and portion sizes. Totally fresh fish at a pretty good value. I also base my sushi restaurant ratings on how the Uni tastes. If the Uni sucks then the entire experience is ruined. Masa has fresh Uni so I know the rest of the ingredients are fresh. So here I am, continuing my search for the greatest sushi ever, and I found myself at Sushi Masa a couple days ago. I have to be honest this was my least favorite so far. Everything was better everywhere else. The only saving grace was the miso soup which was very good. The sashimi was ok, not very fresh, and overall the quality was better everywhere else, the tempura was slightly soggy, and the dragon roll lacked flavor. I ate dinner here last night with some friends, and while I enjoyed my food once it actually arrived, the service was abysmal. 2 stars for service Why? Because our server didn't give us an a la carte sushi menu when we sat down -- we had to ask for it (and it took another 5-10 min. for her to bring it). Because the server took FOREVER to take our order after we readjusted our order after seeing the sushi menu. Because my friend's hot entree arrived a good 25-30 min. before the sushi. (We could have caught, gutted, and sliced our own fish in the time it took to get our food!) Because we had to hope that our server would return to fill our water. 4 stars for food Why? I ordered hamachi nigiri and a Boston Roll (tuna, avocado, cucumber) and traded for one piece of my friend's Rocken Roll (eel, avocado, cucumber). All of the fish tasted fresh to me -- it was easy to bite into the hamachi. The rolls were a decent size -- not humongous, not teeny tiny. The prices for my dishes seemed fairly similar to what I've paid at other sushi restaurants in the area. While I appreciate the server's explanation that the sushi bar was backed up (she explained when we asked her after 25 min. where our food was), it is unacceptable that we received such slow service for a party of 3. With the economy tanking the way it is, restaurants must make themselves stand out by offering exceptional customer service. I didn't find that here. And in response, I'll be taking my hard-earned dollars to other restaurants in the future. P.S. If you do choose to eat here, bring a flashlight, as it's really dark! read more

This is probably your best bet in South San Jose for fresh slices of fish and seafood. They serve almost the exact same things at lunch and dinner but dinner comes at a heftier price. As for lunch, make sure you budget enough time as service here tends to be slow. But they are very nice people so it makes it hard to complain. I always go for the chirashi. If I'm feeling adventurous, I'll upgrade to the special chirashi. This is a bowl of rice topped with fresh slices of fish. The special comes with more expensive items like uni. The best part about their chirashi that you don't find in most places is the pickled vegetables that comes with it. I love Japanese pickled vegetables ever since my first encounter with them in Kyoto. This place has a very unique ambiance. It is decorated like an indoor garden. There is one section with No masks hanging on the wall, which can be scary to some. I found it to be cool. I like the booth area where they hang two katanas and a golf club?! Good for a date or a long enjoyable lunch. If you want faster food, sit at the bar. read more

Surprise birthday parties consist of two things: 1) surprise, 2) party people. With surprise being the appetizer of the evening, three of the eight of us who were present at Masa's wanted to get our table early. Because we weren't all there, they were very apprehensive at giving us our reserved table. Haven't they heard of a surprise party before? What's the point of making reservations? After getting through the anal hostess we found our older waitress to be very hospitable and charmingly funny. Enough so that we gave her a piece of the birthday cake. But let's first talk about getting to Masa's. If you plan on using GoogleMaps BEWARE. Coming from San Jose, it directs you to head down Meril Drive. This leads you into a dimly lim residential street totally absent of any commercial buildings in its proximity. Do not go down Meril Drive, just stay on Camden. Once you find the outdoor plaza that Masa's inhabits, you'll still have to do some searching. Masa's is the only one without a lit restaurant sign. For Saturday night parking was full even though neighboring businesses appear sluggish. Inside Masa's is a kind of Japanese recreation, a la Disney; although not as terribly overwrought. It kinda feels like you're inside an old Japanese house, but without floor seating and you get to keep your shoes on. A mysterious source supplies background muffled pop music. Of course getting a four star rating is due to the food. I had the chef's sashimi combination -- $23.50, wowza. Although sushi is never cheap I didn't expect the price range considering the location, ambiance, and interior. That being said the food rocked. My sashimi was almost straight off the boat fresh. The rest of the party ordered huge dishes that came in either huge suitcase-sized bento boxes or a variety of stacked dishes. Masa's has a pretty good variety of combination meals. Even though I felt underwhelmed with my average sized sashimi plate, the quality of my fatty-omega seafood left me feeling like a content walrus. Masa's also serves up cold or warm sake. I don't know a thing about sake but it was good. One major complaint would be the time between dishes. It took forever to get our salads. I didn't understand why it took so long to get salad that only had dressing and lettuce. The standard soup also took a while too. I would have given them some slack for the tardiness if these two starters were good. Luckily the main course made up for it. ___ My experience would have been 5-star if only the hostess were more understanding and our food had been delivered in a timely matter. I want to this give place 3.5 stars for their service, Japanese pizza and dessert :) The servers here were very polite and attentive. I was parched this day and they kept refilling my glass very quickly. The Japanese pizza was DELICIOUS. I had never had anything like it. It was flavorful and interesting. Would definitely have it again. And, probably the best part was the fried tempura green tea ice cream. This dish was comprised of a warm outside made of tempura and pound cake and then the inside was a subtley cold and sweet green tea ice cream. The flavoring of the green tea was just right, too. Some places overdo it with very strong flavors but this dish was great. The only thing I was meh about was the spider roll. Normally, I'm a huge fan of spider rolls but this one was a little dry so I didn't fully enjoy it. read more

I'm not a huge fan of this place since I think it's overpriced, but my uncle loves it and of course we had to come for his birthday. Had a large party so we ordered a lot. We ordered agedashi tofu, hamachi kama, combination E (california roll, beef teriyaki, lobster & vegetable tempura), chef's omakase sashimi, chef's omakase nigiri sushi, chocolate mochi ice cream, and green tea ice cream. Overall everything was decent. Nothing stood out for me and I probably won't go here myself, but for a family event.. why not! Also, service was pretty good. Come here for the decor and good service - you will not be disappointed! Unlike every other sushi restaurant in town, Sushi Masa has a unique dining room layout, with tasteful decor and furniture reminiscent of a different time and place. They dare to be different from the standard "sushi boat" choices around town, and give you something that could almost feel like you are in Japan, if you have been there. The tatami room and other low seating options, with a quiet, homey atmosphere, really reminded me of my 3 weeks of travel in Japan. It's a wonderful country to visit, but I digress... they get points for that. Service was above and beyond. The fish was great quality. My sushi combo was presented in a linear plate, which prompted me to eat them in a specific order, which felt like the sushi chef (Masa?) had custom tailored the experience just for me. I'm a little indecisive about my rating for this place... Reason being:service was HORRIBLE, and my hubby's food was gross. Well, maybe not as indecisive as I thought.... Had dinner here with my hubby, and my friend Wendy. When we arrived there was a short wait, but since the people ahead of us left, we were seated more quickly than expected. Little did I know that that would be the only thing that happened more quickly than expected.... Now is where the problem began... It took awhile to get menus, and when we did get the menus, they forgot to give us the sushi menu. The only way we even found out that they had one, was because we were asking some questions and the server mentioned it. Seriously, if you're primarily a sushi joint, why would you not automatically give people the sushi menu... Since we had to rethink our choices upon seeing the sushi menu, we had to ask the server to give us a few more minutes..which she did...and then some... We FINALLY got our orders in, and so began our wait. My hubby's gyoza came quickly, so we were thinking the rest of the food would too...BIG MISTAKE! My guy's food came WAY ahead of ours. Every time we asked out server where our food was (when she actually stopped by our table) she kept saying, "just a few minutes more." So we waited..and waited..did I mention we waited? Just as I was about to gnaw on Wendy's arm, our food arrived. There was no explanation or apology for why we had such an extensive wait. They weren't that busy, and even if they were, my husband's food shouldn't have been served half an hour before ours. I realize at a lot of Japanese restaurants there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as to what comes out when, but this was beyond ridiculous. The food was actually pretty good, and not horribly over priced. Although, my husband hated his, and he's not nearly as picky as my friend or I. They didn't even keep our tea and waters refilled. My tonkatsu was overly fatty and chewy. Our server was metaphorically out to lunch. There was no rhyme or reason for when dishes came out, or if there was the server couldn't explain it. I'm not a big seafood person, and I'm the type that would order the chicken teriyaki with california rolls at Japanese restaurants to be on the safe side. After eating at Sushi Masa with a bunch of co-workers (lunch was on the company, so I had to eat what they got to get my fill), I haven't ordered my 'usual' meal since. The sashimi is very fresh - I had hamachi and another kind of tuna (sorry, I forget which kind). It didn't have a fishy taste which is what turns me off from seafood. For those of you who don't like raw fish, I think this place will make you change your mind. The sushi bar chefs were awesome. Buy them all drinks and they'll really take care of you :) Be sure to save room for desert. The fried ice cream is a perfect way to top everything off! read more

This use to be my number one go to place for sushi but since I moved out of South San Jose it was an inconvenience to come all the way over here for sushi. This year we've moved back to the area and thought I'd visit my favorite spot but boy was I disappointed. As always the food is good however the service was extra slow that Saturday. I came with my fiance and two kids but for whatever reason everyone's food came out first except mine. I ordered a sashimi dinner which is all raw fish so I couldn't understand why my dinner came out 45 minutes after the cooked foods. When everyone finished eating my raw fish came out and here I was hurrying to finish my dinner so we can leave because the kids were getting antsy. We ordered the Sushi and Sashimi combination Love Boat which came with tuna, snapper, shrimp, halibut, and salmon sushi, spicy tuna rolls, avocado rolls, tuna sashimi, salad, soup, grapes and a few other things all for about about $35 for 2. The sushi here is very fresh and tasty. I'd have to say that the fish from this place was some of the freshest I've had. The texture and serving temperature was perfect. The fish seemed to melt in my mouth as I ate it. The ambiance is very good with the restaurant divided up into several intimate sections with only a handful of tables in each section. The lighting is dim. The are some stylish decorations along the walls. It's a good place to bring a date. When you walk in you really feel like you are entering someplace special. The service we had was average. The waitress asked us to pay the check before we were done eating. But this is the norm for me since I and my date are regularly the last ones to remain in the restaurant before they close. 5 stars for fantastic food and good ambiance.
